PADUA - Ann Vogt and Chris Lima had about200 guests attend their September wedding. Butthat didnt include the cows. Ann and Chris decided there was no betterplace for a destination wedding than Anns familyfarm located near the tiny town of Padua. Many people dont think of Minnesota, orespecially a dairy farm, as a destination, but wewanted to show people it is, Ann said. Chris grew up on the outskirts of Los Angelesand both he and Ann are well-traveled (she is adoctor and he is a biologist), meaning they hadfriends and colleagues from all over the country. When Ann mentioned the farm as a possibility fortheir wedding, Chris was all for it. He loves the farm and was excited abouthaving our wedding there, Ann said. He is acountry boy at heart. Even though he grew up onthe outskirts of L.A. he has loved wide open spaces, animals, plants and all of nature since his youth.

With Chris on board, and Anns parents, Kenand Sally, and two brothers, Ethan and Aaron (allwho work on the farm) committed to helping out,it was time to plan. Sally, a master gardener, grew most of theflowers for the wedding. Both Ken and Sally linedup vendors to help decorate and cater the event, and even Ethan and Aaron were excited aboutpeople coming to see their family farm. Many of the signs were made out of pallets thatwere torn apart by Ann and Chris. One sign was apost with many directional points, showing not justwhere the wedding events were taking place, but

History Behind Proposing ona Bended Knee

There is no clear historical origin of the ideaof proposing on a bent knee, but the gesturebears striking resemblance to many other

    ceremonial situations, including:

Religion: Kneeling is appropriate duringprayers and other religious ceremonies, including

wedding vows for some faiths. Kneeling is alsodone to genuflect when entering a church or

temple. When proposing, kneeling can have thesame spiritual connotation and can be

seen as a sign of respect. Royalty: Knights kneel while being awarded

honors from kings and queens. This can hold truefor a proposal of marriage and can be seen

as an honor. Surrender: Bowing in supplication before a

victorious enemy is typically seen as a gesture ofsurrender. When proposing, a couple commits toone another and surrenders themselves to being

    part of a couple.

Regardless of the origin, the idea of askingfor a loved ones hand in marriage while

partially kneeling is a highly-symbolic gestureembodying the very essence of committing

ones life to another. The idea of goodwill, honor, and trust in that one person is

opening themselves completely toanother without shame or any

    physical defenses.

    Something old itemsmake weddings special

I went into momsgarage one day in earlyAugust in search of mydad, Romie Moormans, tackle box. I had hopesof using that tacklebox as the base for aflower arrangementfor niece-to-be KieshiaTriskos bridal shower. That idea fell throughwhen opening the boxI discovered there werepullout layered traysstill filled with ages-oldfishing gear. I picked outa few of these itemslures and fishing lineswith hooksdad usedwith hopes they couldbe used within Kieshiasarrangement.

Michelle Meyer fromCentre Floral in SaukCentre did a great jobof incorporating theold items in a new floralarrangement.

Much to my surprise,Kieshia saved a few ofthose fishing trinketsand used them in theirwedding dcor at theFreeport CommunityCenter on Sept. 13. Onthe bridal table was dadsice fishing jiggle stickwith one of his red and

2006 and may not havebeen there in person, buthe was there in spirit onthat special day when mynephew, Chris Negen,

was in me, but I was sointerested in the arts anddidnt know such a careerexisted where I couldhave it all, she said.

Through makeup, hairstyling, wig styling,camera-ready makeup, tattoo and scar cover andmore, Dorrians team oftrained artists brings eliteand professional services

to brides, grooms andbridal parties in themetro, across Minnesotaand beyond.

We go to ourclients, Dorrian said.Whether that be attheir home, a hotel orwherever the bridal partyis gathering to get ready,we are there. We are therefor them at the start oftheir special day and ourwork stays with them theentire time, so we have todo our best every time.We care for them. It is all

about the client. Its a motto Dorrian

again attributes to herupbringing in small-towncentral Minnesota, wherehelping others and treatingpeople well was simplythe right thing to do.

When I trained onthe east and west coast, itjust solidied the fact thatMinnesota is really whereI belong. I wanted to beable to bring the glamourof New York and LosAngeles to brides in theMidwest.

Along with bringingthe glamour to Minnesotabrides, Dorrian has also

embraced the opportunityto bring her experienceback to inspire otherartists and take on the

roles of mentor, teacherand employer to otheraspiring individuals. The dream ispossible to achieve herein the Midwest, Dorrianexplained. You donthave to leave to do this. Idont want to be anywhereelse. No one is nicer thatpeople in Minnesota.

Dorrians desire tostay in her home state hasbeen met and though sheand her husband, Chris, who she married in 2007,have made St. Paul their

place of residence, Dorriannotes that coming homeis always a joy.

My mom lives in St.Martin and when we cometo visit, it just feels so

good to be back where myfoundation was built, shesaid. I have come backhome to do weddings forfriends and family andthey always say they feellucky to be working withme, but I am the lucky oneto come back and do that. You cannot forget whereyou came from. Success has beenproven over the rst yearsof Dorrians businessownership, marked notonly by elated bridesand their many positive

reviews and referrals, but also by the long listof awards earned by her

and the team she hasbuilt and mentored. BrettDorrian Artistry Studios

is the 2014 MinnesotaBride Magazine Best Ofwinner for bridal hair andmakeup and was a nalistfor the honor four years ina row prior to the win. Thestudio was also honoredwith the Peoples ChoiceAward for weddinghair and makeup fromMpls. St. Paul WeddingsMagazineand is a nalistin the 2014 DiamondAwards; results will berevealed in early 2015.The studio has also beenseen in such publications

as Lavender Magazineand the Star Tribune andhas made an appearance

    on Twin Cities Live.Through her

    experiences with the

ever-developing weddingscene, Dorrian haslearned a lot and narrowsher suggestions down forfuture couples as theymake their plans.

Your wedding dayis likely going to be thebiggest planned eventof your life. Its a daythat has really become ahuge part of society andits important to embracethat, she said.

Dorrian suggests thatcouples decide on a fewitems of importance for

their wedding. Whetherthat be hair and makeup, photography, the venue,

food or honeymoon. Oncethose items are agreedupon, she says those arethe places to indulge andget the very best.

The other detailsof the wedding can bebudgeted a little tighter, but if there is somethingyou really envision forthat day, make it happen.

Dorrian, who typicallybooks her services 12-18

months in advance, alsorecommends planningwell ahead of the weddingdate, noting that many ofthe top vendors are owner-operators, which meansthey are less exible withscheduling because theycan usually only committo one wedding each day.

We cannot be in twoplaces at once, she says.Plan ahead and you aremore likely to get whatyou want.

Giving her clientswhat they want is

something Dorrian iscommitted to, and whileher services and her brandare high-end, she pointsout that she is not outof reach for brides on abudget.

I stay conscious ofpricing in order to stayaccessible to everyone, she said.

With another weddingseason looming, Dorrianis excited to continuecombining her hometownvalues with big-citytraining to make dreams

come to life for herclients; after all, it is whatshe really loves to do.

Bride Lauren Carlson and her bridal party gather for a toast after their hair andmakeup was done by Brett Dorrian and her team of artists. Dorrian insists onmaking every client feel special, particularly the bride.

Bride Beth Keating gotthe look she was lookingfor on her special day

On a crisp fall morning in 2006, withthe Colorado Rockies as a backdrop,

Tim and I piled into a hot air balloon andbegan an ascent above the tree line.We had been dating a couple years

after having known each other since wewere kids. I had just graduated fromcollege, and as a gift, Tim planned avacation. All I knew was where we weregoing and when he took care of thedetails.

Tim woke me very early onemorning during the trip, insisting that wewatch the sun rise. I was tired, but pulledmyself out of bed and we hopped in our

rental car.Tim said he had forgotten something

and had to go back to our room and Idozed off while waiting for him. I hadbeen asleep for a couple of minuteswhen my door suddenly opened, lettingthe chilly air rush past my face. Myeyes bulged open with fright and myadrenaline kicked in.

It was Tim, but standing next to himwas an older man a stranger. Liz, Timsaid, This Frank, our hot air balloonpilot.

I was bafed. Apparently, Tim hadbeen planning the surprise ride for sixmonths.

We rode with Frank to a vacant eld.I just kept looking at Tim as if to say, what on earth are we doing? What ifthis guy isnt even a pilot? As it turned out, Frank really was ahot air balloon pilot and after the balloon

was lled and ready to oat, Frank invitedus into the basket, which was barely bigenough for the three of us. I was startingto really wake up at this point and nallyrealized what an awesome surprise thiswas.

We rose above the trees and thecity, gazing at the horizon where themountains stood tall and the sunshinekissed the peaks. Below us, cars bustled

along and crisp, fall leaves twitched inthe breeze.I knew I would never forget this

moment but we needed to take pictures.Tim leaned down, getting his camera outof his bag. He handed me the camera. Take mypicture, he said. It was an odd requestsince he was just kneeling on the insideof a giant basket in the air. But soon, Ifound out that wasnt all he was doing.

Just after I snapped his photo, Timlifted something shiny up toward me.

    The question in the sky

    By LIZ VOSStaff Writer

I leaned down toward him, my jawdropped; it was a ring.

He had gone to an extreme lengthto ask me to marry him. He could haveasked me anywhere and I still would havesaid yes, but Tim wanted extraordinary.

Our hot air balloon story has beenfollowed by a thousand other stories andI love them all. Marriage is hard but itseasy to love someone who goes above

and beyond for me, even to ask a simpleyet profound question.Seven years of marriage pales in

comparison to the 40, 50, and 60-yearcelebrations others celebrate each day. However, where it lacks in time, it makesup in content. Our ride was on Sept. 28,2006, and exactly one year later we weremarried.

I look back often on Tims questionin the sky and I smile. It was a beautifulmoment, sparking what we hope to be alifetime of adventure.

    The dream is real

    By LIZ VOSStaff Writer

Donabauer revamps salon, creates stylish space ftfor wedding day preparations

    AVON MissyDonabauer still has

surreal moments as shebustles through her workat MD Salon & Spa alongAvons Main Street.Though it will be a year inFebruary since the dreamof owning her own salonbecame a reality, somedays it just doesnt feelreal.

I still cant believeit sometimes, Donabauersaid as she sat in thenewly-renovated guestand waiting space at thesalon. This year ew by

and it has really cometogether. Donabauer hasworked hard over the pastyear, managing throughthe renovations thattransformed two separatespaces of a salon and alaundromat into one wide-open space, completewith an expanded guestseating area, stations formanicures and pedicuresand two private massagerooms that can also beopened and connected for

    couples massages.The original salon

space has not changeda whole lot, but it wasgiven some new touches

to match the renovationson the other side of thebuilding, Donabauerexplained. Now itsreally a lot more open andthere is plenty of room forlarge groups to be heretogether.

Part of Donabauersmission when she beganrenovations was to be ableto accommodate the largergroups that often comewhen wedding seasonarrives. Groups of up to15 people have come in on

the morning of a weddingand the expanded spaceallows them to relaxand enjoy the start to theexciting day ahead ofthem.

We have counterspace near the seating areafor bridal parties to use ifthey bring snacks or if theywant to enjoy mimosaswhile they get their hairdone, Donabauer said.It can get a little chaoticat times, but we make itfun for them. Having this

    extra room to relax ishelpful.

Donabauer andher team look forwardto wedding days. The

emotions and anticipationof the group paired withseeing the transitionright before their eyesbrings a huge sense ofaccomplishment to thestylists.

Its so fun for usto see them make thetransition from when theywalk in the door to whenthey leave, Donabauersaid. We have even hadbridal parties get dressedhere, which is even morefun because then we get to

see the nal product. In her experience,

Donabauer offers twopieces of advice to brides:dont forget the veil andstart hair appointmentsas early in the morning aspossible. One of the mostcommon things thathappens is that a bridewill forget her veil on themorning of the wedding, said Donabauer. She hasa lot to think about thatday and the veil is not at

the top of the list. In regard to time, rushing is not ideal forsuch an important detailof the day. The earlier thebetter, she says.

All in all, the addedspace has created anatmosphere of style, relaxation and fun, whichis just what Donabauer hadin mind when she beganmaking the big transition. The nal product is alsoa physical reminder ofthe accomplishment ofreaching her goal.

I started out bydoing my friends hair fortheir weddings and reallyenjoyed it. Now I havecome this far, she said. Its been ying by but itis so exciting to actuallysee it happening, even ifit doesnt always seemreal.

A spacious and welcoming seating area was a priority in the renovation plansfor the salon. PHOTOS BY LIZ VOS

Sam Gertken prepares for a pedicure appointment inthe newly-renovated spa space at MD Salon & Spa.

renovations over the course of the past year, Donabauer replaced alaundromat with an open seating area; manicure and pedicure stations andtwo massage rooms.

    Farm continued from page 18

A common question was what we did with the cows in the winter, saidAnn. There were also a lot of questions about the machinery, the crops, feeding, milking and the big piles covered in plastic and tires. For the guests it was an educational experience of sorts, but for Ann it wasa homecoming.

The farm has always been central to our family, she said. I value havinggrown up on the farm, and I cant think of a better way to develop a strongwork ethic than working your butt off every day. Ann, who now lives in California with Chris, said she misses the wide-openspaces, the beautiful starry skies and the miles of dirt roads she ran down andexplored as a kid. It is is why the most important day of her life was held at the

place that has held her heart for so many years. It meant the world to me to have it here, she said. We are proud to callthis place home and share it with our family and friends. No matter where inthe world I am living, the farm is still my home, and I really couldnt imaginegetting married anywhere else.
