Open daily 10am – 5pm for the main season from Sunday 10 March (Mother’s Day). Located in the village of Cannington, the Walled Gardens lie within the grounds of a medieval priory and many of its fine buildings, including the walls of the garden, remain.

Having undergone extensive redevelopment, the gardens were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward in 2009 and have also been accredited as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction’ by VisitEngland and are a Royal Horticultural Society recommended garden providing a superb facility for students at Bridgwater College Cannington Centre.

The gardens have classic and contemporary features such as; the ‘hot’ herbaceous border; the blue garden; a sub-tropical walk; and a Victorian style fernery, amongst others. There is also a botanical glasshouse where arid, sub-tropical and tropical plants can be seen and two smaller gardens within the walls (The Bishop’s and Australasian Gardens) are areas of real tranquillity.

There are also tea rooms, plant sales and a garden gift shop - which you don’t need access to the gardens to visit - so there’s plenty to see and do for all the family!

A wood-burning stove is a heating appliance capable of burning wood fuel and wood-derived biomass fuel, such as wood pellets. Generally the appliance consists of a solid metal (usually cast iron or steel) closed fire chamber, a fire brick base and an adjustable air control.

The appliance will be connected by ventilating stove pipes to a suitable chimney or flue,

which will fill with hot combustion gases once the fuel is ignited. The chimney or flue gases must be hotter than the outside temperature to ensure combustion gases are drawn out of the fire chamber and up the chimney.

Many wood-burning stoves are engineered such that they can be converted to multi-fuel stoves with the addition of a grate.

celebrating 200 YearsThis year marks the 200th anniversary of a hospital in Bridgwater, which opened as the Bridgwater Institution in 1813 in Back Street – now Clare Street. It moved to Salmon Parade in 1820, being further improved and added to over the years.

If you have memorabilia or photographs relating to the hospital which you think deserve a wider audience, then please take them to the Blake Museum. The museum is currently shut until Easter for refurbishment, but volunteer staff are available on Mondays and Thursdays to receive items of interest, and will be inviting people in to talk about their experiences and anecdotes of working in the hospital. The museum telephone number is 01278 456127 and it is situated at 5 Blake Street.

It’s hard to imagine anything more uplifting than the arrival of spring. Our mood brightens, and we can literally lighten our homes by letting the sunshine flood in from the outdoors to lift a room out of this winter gloom.

So if you want to update your home’s appearance but don’t

have the time or budget to redecorate completely, consider starting with your window treatments.

Every window should make a statement and Hillarys, the UK’s largest supplier of made to measure blinds and shutters, has really got its finger on the fashion pulse when it comes to what the nation’s best dressed windows should be wearing this season! From bold and bright to cool and contemporary, Hillarys has got it covered.

Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, is responsible for the introduction of all new collections in line with the latest interior trends and colours. She also researches innovative new window treatment ideas. Her in-depth knowledge

and experience means she can recommend a solution for almost any window problem.

coLour BLindSpring is the perfect time to introduce a fun upbeat pop of colour into your home. Use a vibrant splash to wake yourself up in the morning when you put a bright blind in the bathroom, bedroom or kitchen. Stimulating and energizing, orange is said to help promote creativity and many a good idea is said to start life as a shower moment!

sheerBlinds or ‘half-up’ blinds in a sheer fabric are the perfect contemporary alternative to nets. They offer good levels of privacy during the day whilst still allowing in plenty of light.

nature traiLNothing shouts the onset of good weather better than the introduction of flora and fauna into your home. Botanical prints are blooming marvellous and give a lovely upbeat feel.

To find out more about the Hillarys in-home service or to arrange a free appointment with your local Advisor call 0800 916 1014.

Spring has almost arrived, and for a large percentage of new year’s resolution exercise recruits, the desire for lifestyle change is diminishing. In nearly 20 years of the fitness world, I have noted a pattern of participation drop off; by Easter, fifty per cent will have given up.

Lifestyle change requires behaviour change; it takes time, months in fact for a habit to form, but a bout of seasonal illness, and the frustration of slow physique change can be enough for even the most determined and passionate new participant to abandon the exercise ship.

I am often asked about personal training; so let me tell you a bit about choosing a trainer.

A good PT is passionate, experienced and has a developed area of expertise to

help you to set goals, understand your motivators and weaknesses, will work one-to-one with you, and set you routines to do without them. Most of all, they will want your behaviour to change you into an independent exercise participant, with evolving micro and macro goals.

Personal training is a business model for many, and like many professions has fast routes of certification; in the industry money can buy you a whole stream of fitness credentials without you ever needing to have worked with real clients.

Anyone can guarantee results and a host of testimonials in their marketing, but do they have experience and a specialist area such as rehabilitation, weight loss, or sports specific training? A trainer is an employee, therefore research is required before

parting with your money; get to know them, observe them at work, Google them, check their Facebook page. This is standard practice for most organisations prior to job offers, so why should this be any different for hiring a PT?

Working with a personal trainer can be a wise investment, but find one that suits you. Some people like to be yelled at, some want crazy challenges; be clear about what you want to achieve, and find a PT who ticks all the boxes for your needs. Remember - without challenge, there will never be change, and a good trainer can help you become your inner athlete.
