2012 ANNUAL REPORTJanuary 1, 2012–December 31, 2012

GREETINGS:

It gives me pleasure to present the annual report ofthe USS Hornet Museum for CalendarYear 2012.We highlight here our success in meeting the challengesof 2012. As a non-profit educational facility that is notfunded by any governmental or public agency, thechallenges are many. Thanks to our dedicated staff, selfless volunteers, supportive members, and manydonors,we remain on course to achieve our mission.

Through the management of both revenue and expensestreams, the Museum remains in a position of relativefinancial strength. This allows us to continue operatingas a premiere venue for educational activities andcommunity events.

The USS Hornet Museum has proven to be a travel-worthy destination. The highly decoratedWorldWar IIaircraft carrier is our primary artifact. We continue torestore and open additional spaces, while maintainingtheir authenticity, for public touring; therefore, recurringvisits are encouraged and visitorship has increased. Sinceits opening 14 years ago, the Museum has had visitorsfrom every state in our union and 67 foreign countries.

The USS Hornet (CVS-12) spent almost three decadestraveling the world’s oceans in service to our nation. Our museum ship maintains its Legacy of Excellence forAmerica, the U.S.Navy, and her crewmen, to all citizensof the world. With deep appreciation for the countlesssacrifices and contributions of many, the crew of theUSS Hornet Museum and I are grateful and proud toserve, and preserve, this true historic national treasure.

Sincerely,

Randall RamianChief Executive Officer

A MESSAGE FROMTHE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

On behalf of the Aircraft Carrier HornetFoundation Board of Trustees, I amagain pleased to endorse this latestannual report on the operations of theUSS Hornet Museum. All the many menand women who contribute their timeand support to providing a meaningfuland enjoyable experience aboard theship—volunteers, suppliers, consultants, donors, museum members, trustees, andstaff—can take great pride in anotherproductive year.

As we enter the 15th year of museumoperations in 2013,we are reminded, too, of the commissioning of theUSS Hornet 70 years ago in November,1943—the seventh Essex-class carrier tobe commissioned. Part of our Museum’smotto “Honoring the past…” hasnever meant more than now as welook back on our ship’s legacy ofservice in the U.S. Navy. And, ourmotto’s conclusion “…Serving thePresent, Inspiring the Future” hasbeen well-served, too, these past 14years, as Hornet assumed her next roleas a museum.

We, the trustees, hope that we’ll seeyou aboard in 2013, particularly aswe celebrate these two milestones—15 years as a museum and 70 yearssince commissioning.

Thank you, as always, for your generousand continued support.

“Still on Station”…

Jon StanleyChairman,ACHF

MISSIONAircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation preservesand honors the legacy of the USS Hornetand its role in naval aviation, the defenseof our country, the Apollo Program and theexploration of space. The USS Hornet Museumconnects the greatest generation of Americanswith future generations, educating andinspiring them to meet their challenges.

Our Guiding Principles: The Museum is dedicated first and foremost tothose men and women who made the greatestsacrifice in the service of their nation.

We will be responsive to the community andwill maintain the USS Hornet Museum complexas a community asset, a community resource, and an integral part of the community.

We will preserve the historic fabric of the ship.

We will create an exciting, stimulating, state-of-the-art museum environment and an attractiveand comfortable setting, which will encourageits use for family recreation.

We will create a stimulating, creative, innovativework/study/research environment, and workas a staff/volunteer team in support of thesecommon goals.

The USS Hornet Museum, a State and NationalHistoric Landmark, is berthed at Pier 3 on the formernaval air station in Alameda. The ship’s active dutyyears spanned the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s. The historicaircraft carrier was a key participant inWorldWar II,the VietnamWar, the ColdWar, and the recovery ofthe first two lunar landing space missions. She wasstored in a naval mothball fleet from 1970–1995.

When opened in 1998, the Hornet was the onlysea, air and space museum on theWest Coast. The Museum is a great resource for local andinternational visitors and is open seven days aweek—closed only for Thanksgiving, Christmasand NewYear’s days.

More than 82,000 people visited the Hornet duringthe 2012 calendar year, a 33% increase over 2011.This number includes all general admission visitors, members, and guests for public and private events.

Some of our most popular youth activities includethe educational “STEM to Stern” tour, the overnightLive-Aboard program for organized youth groups, and our history-themed Living Ship Days. Otherfamily-friendly events include all the major patrioticholidays such the Fourth of July celebration, andspecial events like our Halloween Monster Bash, and big band dances.

Neil Armstrong was mourned and remembered

As a National Historic Landmark,we face thesame financial challenges as many other shipmuseums. Since we receive no support fromthe Navy nor any other governmental funding,we must constantly deal with limited fundingand staffing resources.

Yet, in spite of this, we continued to balanceour budget in CY2012.We maintained a positivecash flow, secured other sources of income, andimportantly, developed a contingency plan forunanticipated financial requirements.

Our revenues were generated primarily from foursources: 22% from General Admissions, 70% fromMuseum Operations, 6% from Donations, Grants& Corporate Sponsors, and 2% from Memberships.

These revenues were used to fund basic andnew Museum Operations such as developingyouth educational programs, or enhancing ourLive-Aboard experience, in addition to the normalmaintenance and restoration activities requiredby a national treasure of Hornet’s size and legacy.

This year the USS Hornet Museum continuedto improve its financial stability. Our cost contain-ment plans were successful thanks to the effortsby all of our departments.

MUSEUMShip RestorationThe guiding vision for our restorationactivity is to preserve the aircraft carrierin the same condition as when she wasdecommissioned in 1970.We want ourvisitors to understand the living andworking conditions experienced by thesailors while aboard ship.

Following a methodical plan, space byspace, compartment by compartment, volunteer crews tirelessly restore theship back to her in-service condition. From the Bridge, to the Officers’Wardroom, to Sick Bay, to the Engine Room,Ready Rooms, Hangar Bay, Galley and Mess Deck,Berthing Spaces, the aircraft carrier welcomes guestsaboard daily to share in a bit of history from a past era.

Each project starts by researching hundreds ofphotos provided in cruise books and by formercrew members. After establishing exactly how aparticular space should look, the physical processof restoration begins. This includes chipping the oldpaint; cleaning and prepping the space;matching thecorrect paint color from the bulkheads to deck tiles;stenciling of the piping and duct work; and electricalcabling. Then it’s locating and installing the variousitems and machinery that make the space comealive. Nothing can be overlooked.

In 2012,we proudly opened to the public thefollowing new and/or expanded spaces:

• No. 2 Boiler Room• 07 Level Gun Director Control Room• Enlisted Mess Deck and Scullery• Geedunk (Ship’s Soda Fountain)• Various Passageways to new exhibit areas• Apollo Room Exhibit

Most of the restored spaces reflect elementsfrom a combination of all three decades that theUSS Hornet served America. Detail and historicalaccuracy are the essence of all restoration work.

The biggest compliment our volunteers can receiveis from a former crew members coming aboard withtheir families and seeing the looks on their faces—for a brief instant, each is back home on his ship, justas he left her.

Ship’s scullery almost looks ready for use Painting is only one step in the restoration process

Aircraft RestorationOf course, an aircraft carrier is not completewithout aircraft aboard. The Museum’s Air Groupexhibits are comprised of 15 aircraft and two aircraftnose cockpits mounted on trailers, including:

TBM-3 Avenger SH-3 Sea KingFM-2Wildcat HUP-1 RetrieverFJ-2 Fury T-28 TrojanH-34D Seahorse US-2B TrackerF8U-1 Crusader SH-2H Sea SpriteTA-4J Skyhawk F-4S PhantomS-3B Viking F-14ATomcatAH-1F Cobra

The two trailer-mounted cockpits are the F8UCrusader known as “Clementine” and the F-11 Tigeraffectionately called “FiFi,” both of which seeplenty of action in parades and community eventsthroughout the year.

The continued restoration and upkeep of aircraftremains an ongoing challenge for the Museum.Specific parts and materials are extremely hardto find and expensive. However, the skills andcraftsmanship displayed by our crews are phenome-nal. These crews are comprised of retired and activemilitary, private and commercial aviation profession-als and enthusiasts that have the interest and desireto learn and experience working on these rare andhistorical aircraft.Visitors will see the Air Group’sbanner in the restoration area stating their goal:“That these aircraft be restored in such a way thateven the craftsmen that built them, the pilots thatflew them, the mechanics that maintained them andthe crews that worked with them see no flaws, noth-ing out of line otherwise. Just as they left them. It ispurely respect and a tribute to them.” Apollo Room Re-Opening

Cobra arrives to join other aircraft in restoration

EDUCATIONPrograms, School Groups & ToursThe year 2012 was very successful for the Museum’sEducation Department. Reservation numbers forour specialized tours and overnights were on anupswing as interest in these events increasedMuseum attendance and interest in American historywithin the community. Our Living Ship Days also sawa rise in attendance, and we welcomed aboard a newseason of historical speakers, including former OSSWWII operative Andrew Mousalimas and HornetWWII Pilot and author Billy Bush. This program alsodrew national media attention for the ship.

This year, the Museum hosted a special fundraiserfor the Education Department. The event, calledThe Grey Ghost: Paranormal Conference, was ascholarship money fundraiser to enable the Museumto assist in providing transportation for local schoolsto take part in its STEM (Science,Technology,Engineering,Mathematics) educational programs.

Paracon was the first time the USS Hornet Museumworked with Alameda Paranormal Researchers tohost a paranormal conference. The event featuredsome of the most well-respected names in theparanormal field, including several television person-alities. Paracon helped raise over $8,000 for theEducation Department!

Our education programs offer unique chances forstudents to experience science and history firsthand.Whether it is by taking students on a basic docent-led tour or participating in one of the educationallabs, our programs enhance a student’s appreciation

of U.S. history and STEM (science, technology, engi-neering, and math). They offer what no text bookcan—a tactile experience which captures the valueof American history and early naval technology.

The “STEM to Stern Jr.” program, a new scienceprogram geared towards elementary schools, isdesigned to explore the relationship between theship’s operation and Earth science. Our labs arebased on California 4th and 5th grade standardsand explore the wonders of electricity, magnetism, weather, and aviation. By exploring the operationalfunctions of aWWII aircraft carrier, the realms ofelectricity and weather come alive! This year, for thefirst time, the Museum welcomed onboard morethan 30 new schools who participated in our “STEMto Stern Jr.” program. The Education Department alsoenhanced several student “Live-Aboard” overnightsby introducing STEM into the Live-Aboard program.

Currently, the Museum offers six different programsserving all age and grade levels to local educators. The name of each program, the audience it serves, and a brief content description are listed below:

“Field Trip at Sea” Grades K-12Basic docent-led day tour highlights Hornet’shistory and Apollo missions.

“Step into History” Grades 8-12Learn 20th Century U.S. history while visiting fivedifferent stations onboard during this day tour.

“STEM to Stern” Grades 8-12Apply math and science to the daily operations ofan aircraft carrier during this day tour.

“STEM to Stern Jr.” Grades 2-5Field trips are enhanced with a one-hour hands-on earth science lab during this day program.

“Passport to History” Youth Overnight Grades K-5Students have a rare and unique opportunity tofollow in the “footsteps of Hornet’s sailors.”

Live-Aboard ProgramThe overnight Live-Aboard program provides anexciting opportunity for guests to “step into history”and envision a day in the life of the crewmen whoserved our nation so gallantly. Guests enjoy bothdinner and breakfast in the original crew’s mess deckand partake in various optional tours throughoutthe ship. They also participate in the telling of ghost

stories in the Fo’c’sle, sleep overnight on bunksin the crew berthing compartments, and take a ridein the flight simulator.

Additionally, scouts can earn merit badges inaviation, radio or space exploation during their stay. All guests are encouraged to participate in normalMuseum daytime activities as well. This highlypopular program is run by a core of dedicatedindividuals, some of whom served aboard the aircraftcarrier while she was in service. Their experienceand enthusiasm bring the ship to life for each guest.

Since its inception, the Live-Aboard program hashosted over 100,000 overnight visitors, with roughly9,000 guests in 2012.Many organized youth groups, such as YMCAs and churches, take advantage of thisunique learning opportunity, and Boy and Girl Scoutsorganizations have made our overnight experiencea perennial favorite for more than a decade.

For many years, hundreds of California Sea Scoutsand their families have descended on the Museumover the Memorial Day weekend. During theirthree-day Ancient Mariner Regatta, these youngstersdemonstrate a knowledge of various sea-faring skills.

The Live-Aboard program is an educational experiencelike no other. Its popularity can be summed up bythe huge number of repeat visitors who returnwith friends and family to experience the fun allover again.

EVENTSFor many years, the USS Hornet Museum has reliedon special events for a source of revenue. Theseinclude Hornet dances, patriotic events, our annualFourth of July celebration, private/corporate parties, meetings, filming, and trade shows. Many of ourguests have become regular attendees and marktheir calendars each year for their favorite events.

Hornet Community EventsIn 2012, as part of its community outreach program, the Museum hosted many fun and patriotic publicevents. Since these are primarily fundraising activitiesfor the Museum,we greatly appreciate the significanttime, effort, and services generously donated by ournumerous volunteers and vendors.

In early May, to observe the 70th Anniversary ofthe Doolittle Raid,we partnered with the JimmyDoolittle Air and Space Museum at Travis to host“A Tribute to Jimmy Doolittle, Honoring the Leaderof the Doolittle Raid.” Special guests included hisgranddaughter, Jonna Doolittle Hoppes, and threeof the surviving Raiders—Thomas Griffin, DavidThatcher, and Edward Saylor.

The summer season then kicked off with a big banddance featuring “The Harry James Orchestra” andfollowed by our popular Fourth of July celebration.More than 2,000 guests toured the historic ship, listened or danced to one of the many bands, andplayed interactive games. The day was capped withviews of several fireworks shows throughout theBay Area from the flight deck.

In July 1969, after his Apollo 11 crewsuccessfully completed the first moon landingmission, the USS Hornet recovered astronautsArmstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins whenthey returned to earth. Special guests at this tributeincluded NASA flight surgeon Dr.William Carpentier, who accompanied the astronauts in the mobilequarantine facility (MQF) while aboard Hornet.

Our NewYear’s Eve gala is legendary throughoutthe Bay Area and the 2012 edition was no exception.Once again, 3 O’Clock Jump performed favoriteswing classics while roughly 1,100 attendees dancedthe night away amongst our vintage aircraft on thehangar deck.At midnight, guests went up to theflight deck to view the San Francisco skyline lit upwith fireworks. The Silent Auction was also a hugesuccess and continues to grow in popularity.

Private Event SalesThe year 2012 saw many well-known companiesavail themselves of the unique experience forwhich the Museum is famous. International companyUnilever—owner of Ben and Jerry’s as well as amultitude of household products—bought out theShip for a group of VIPs from Brazil. We had a changeof pace when the “Slaughter by theWater” concert

exposed the USS Hornet Museum to a new, youngerdemographic of those that truly honor our militaryheritage, creating new fans among them.

Facebook, one of the world’s best-known companies, rented the entire ship and pier for a day. The 4,500employees and their families, including the founderMark Zuckerberg, thoroughly enjoyed their annualcompany picnic aboard the Museum. This eventintroduced our historic aircraft carrier to yet anothergeneration, delighting a younger age group.

Other highlights included the Lazarex CancerFoundation withWWII hero Louis Zamberini asguest speaker for their annual gala.

Marketing and networking efforts with local andinternational destination management companies, event management services, and caterers resultedin valuable connections and numerous holidayparties of all sizes during the last quarter.

Two of our annual private event clients,The NationalRifle Association and Non-Commissioned OfficersAssociation, were joined by the Naval Academy andVeterans Administration in hosting patriotic-inspiredevents this year. New contracts were establishedwith PG&E, Palantir, Linear Tech, Genentech,Access, and others. A sponsorship/trade with the PetalumaAir Show brought us a dozen vintage aircraft flyingover our ship celebrating Veterans Day in exchangefor a small gathering in our Officers’Wardroom.

Although we did not have any major television ormovie productions onboard in 2012,we did serve asa location for NHK Japan, PBS’s CultureWorks, andthe Travel Channel’s BaggageWars.
