To Whom It May Concern,

It has come to my attention that a friend of mine has been accused of something she is incapable of committing.

Animal abuse, hoarding, and other completely untrue allegations!

Jane Smith has a heart the size of Texas and just loves animals. She runs a no kill dog shelter and placed 137 dogs in good forever homes last year.

She makes sure the animals are all cared for, are fed, watered and takes care of their medical needs. They are spayed or neutered before placing them in deserving homes. She will get their teeth cleaned, heartworm treated or anything else that they need to make them whole and happy. She has a groomer that she continually goes to, and spares no expense in their care. Jane spends time with basic training and even some agility work. She takes scared, timid, fearful animals and teaches them to trust humans again.

Page 3: Bright futures letters no addresses

I feel the humane shelter of Wayne County sees her as competition and this is all about money! Not really about the well being of animals!

They have also taken $ 17,400 a month from her after confiscating heranimals in a very questionable (raid) of her private property. They have taken approximately $35,000 over the last 2 months. This is without her being found guilty of anything!

My feeling is they are trying to bankrupt her and their hope is she will just give up. Let me tell you that is not the case!!! Would someone put up $35,000 if she didn't love her animals?? Let's be real, this is politicaland it's about money!!! Not the welfare of the dogs! The shelter wants the dogs for free so they can place them in homes and (yes) collect the money for them!!

Her rights have definitely been violated and she is a very kind individual that wouldn't hurt anyone or anything. Not one of the dogs were ever malnourished, neglected or mistreated in anyway. Jane always went above and beyond in her care and treatment. They have a 44 acre farm to live on, run and play! It is a wonderful place where they were happy. Now they are languishing sadly back in a shelter. I am sad and concerned for them! They must be scared and confused!

Page 4: Bright futures letters no addresses

Jane Smith is a very loving and kind person incapable of these accusations. I have known her for over 10 years. I have accompanied her to shelters as she sees all of the dogs hoping to live and be rescued! I have seen her make the heart wrenching decisions on which ones she can help and pass the others by. She networks others hoping that another rescue will help the ones that she couldn’t.

In closing this is about money and it's a very unfair (witch hunt) that is hard to believe that it could even take place in a (free) country!

Please take my letter to heart because everything I have said is true! She is a persecuted, innocent, individual, that has been targeted for all the wrong reasons. There are many homeless animals. When you target a good rescue, how many animals have YOU condemned to death?

I will say that they want her money and the dogs for free and they want to put her out of business. They see her as competition.

I personally have 2 dogs that Jane placed with me and they are happy healthy dogs. Yes, she removed 2 dogs from high kill shelters and found them a home with me!

Page 5: Bright futures letters no addresses

She is an angel and the homeless animals need her. Her animals need her! Adopters need her!

She makes sure the dogs are happy, the adopters are happy, but unfortunately you can’t do what she does, so you want to hurt her and all the animals that she has and those that could be saved.

Shame on you Wayne County!

This is all about greed, money and politics!

Suzy - posted 09/19/2011

from Debbie of Delaware, OH

Let me begin by letting you know what Suzy's Petfinder ad stated: "Rescues often get animals who have been neglected and abused. We cry at the site of many of them, as we did with Suzy. We rejoice when they are healed inside and out and when a new family opens their home and their hearts and are willing to give them a wonderful life. We as rescues, are only the bridge to their new life ahead. This is sweet Suzy. She was sad, sad Suzi. The pictures graphically depict the pain and neglect that Suzi endured. Someone tried to cut Suzi's extremely matted, dirty coat with a straight edge before the rescue came. Her legs and paws were encapsulated in matted hair. She had many, many cuts over 42, all over her body. We negotiated payment on a street corner with "the person who found her" to get her into rescue and get the TLC she deserves.

Page 8: Bright futures letters no addresses

Suzy immediately went to the groomer and was noted to be one of the best behaved clients she ever had. She trustingly allowed the groomer to clean her up and groom all of the remaining mats. We were astounded that she was not afraid after sustaining the painful slices to her skin. Suzy is also getting her medical care, vaccines, spay and an overall check-up. She is a beautiful girl and very, very sweet. Some of Suzy's teeth are broken probably from being kicked, but she eats just fine. Her cuts have healed and she is happy and playing here in rescue waiting for her new home. Sweet Suzy is very special.." Her ad was not the ideal image of your typical dog, and when my daughter showed her ad to me, my heart broke! I have a rescue yorkie and I have been wanting a playmate for her, so we scheduled a visit with Suzy. My daughter picked me up and we drove a couple counties over to Bright Futures Rescue. Suzy turned out to be this sweet, spunky, happy girl and I felt bonded to her instantly! Needless to say, I filed the paperwork, my vet and references checked out, and two and a half hours later we were home with our new family member! Her adoption day fell on my birhday, so what a gift for both she and I!!! She hasn't been in our home very long, but we all adore her and my yorkie likes her 'sister'. I can't imagine why anyone would harm that sweet girl, but I'm glad that my daughter has a heart for the 'less-than-desirable' pets, because Suzy is an absolute joy!

Thank you Bright Rescues Future for giving her a chance! (Her photo is her 'Before' shot to give you an idea of the severe need of a good home she was in. So sad.)

Adopted from Bright Futures Rescue, Creston, OH.

On Saturday, January 5 Mark and I adopted a rescue dog named "Trapper". He was at a high kill shelter in West VA. That person called Jane who runs a rescue in Creston Valley, OH. She put an ad on Pet Finder and Mark forwarded me the link. He is a combination of my favorite breeds: Miniature Schnauzer and Airedale. Now Trapper has his forever home!

Hi Jane,I know it's been awhile since we were in contact but I've been thinking about you and wanting to let you know how happy we are to have Jax and how well he's doing. It took a few months for Jax to find his comfort zone here in our home. It has taken some time for him to feel total trust with is but we've crossed that bridge and can now approach or pet Jax when he has a bone, toy or food without issue. He has found his place in our home and more importantly in our hearts. He's doing well, seems very happy and is a healthy fun loving pup. I'm attaching a few recent pics of him - thank you again for caring enough to find him his forever home. We hope all is well with you.

To Whom it May Concern,

I adopted Bogi from Bright Futures Rescue in May of 2014. I was told before the adoption could occur, I was required to fill out an application with two referrals with name address and phone numbers where each could be reached and the name and phone of my veterinarian. My veterinarian was contacted to ensure that I was a good pet owner. After the application was approved we set up a meeting point where I could bring my other dog to meet Bogi.

We met at a park close to Jane's house. Bogi was well nourished and had a sweet disposition. The two dogs seemed to get along good. We took Bogi home with us that day. Jane had told me that if for some reason things did not work well the rescue would be willing to take Bogi back.

We have had Bogi for over a month now and things are going well. He is house broken and very well behaved dog. He is welcome addition to the family.

I am glad that Bright Futures Rescue rescued Bogi and many like him from certain death.

Sincerely,

Linda Davis

To Whom It May Concern:

In November of 2012, a friend of mine, Kathy Taylor, contacted Jane Smith of Bright Futures Rescue about meeting two dogs, Dora and Goober. Kathy was interested in Dora and had previously adopted a dog from Jane. I was interested in Goober and had been watching his page for some time on PetFinder.com.

After numerous emails, we arranged to meet at a convenient location for all of us: Kathy lives in Cleveland, Jane lives in Creston and I live in Columbus. In December, my husband, two other dogs, and I traveled to the Creston Community Park to meet Jane and Goober. After watching Goober with us and observing the behavior of our other two dogs, Jane agreed to allow us to adopt him. He was in great health, a good weight, and obviously very well cared for.

Page 14: Bright futures letters no addresses

A photo taken from that day is at the end of this letter. Goober is on the left. We took him home later that day.

Goober was vet checked by my veterinarian and given a clean bill of health. He has been an important part of lives ever since. I would not hesitate to recommend Jane and Bright Futures Rescue to any family looking to adopt an animal.

Sincerely,

Mary Anne Fraser

Dear Jane,

I can’t believe it’s been over four months since our trip to Ohio to pick up Whisper (now called Evie!) I wanted to write to you and let you know how things are going. Also, to let you know how pleased I was with the adoption process.

After my husband passed away in December, I decided to adopt a dog. I wanted a rescue dog, I wanted a cocker spaniel, I wanted a female and I didn’t want a puppy. A friend helped me in my search and we scoured the internet. Oh how many sites there are regarding adoption. I was overwhelmed, but finally selected three possible dogs. Evie was one of the three!

Of the three inquiries I made, only you responded (and responded immediately). After that, everything seemed to work like clockwork. I filled out the adoption application, we then talked by phone, you checked my references and within a short period of time, agreed to allow me to become Evie’s mother. I remember you telling me that you had quite a few people interested in her, but the fact that

Page 16: Bright futures letters no addresses

I had owned two cocker spaniels in the past and that I was willing to drive from NC to OH to pick her up were deciding factors. (I did ask if you would put her on a plane, but you wanted to meet me in person so that was not an option. I admire your concern in that regard.)

Our whirlwind trip to Ohio, avoiding snow storms all around, was something to remember! But, one of the most poignant moments was when you had to say good-bye to a dog you loved and cared for. The dedication you have to saving rescued dogs showed all over your face. Evie was sad to leave you, but I know how satisfying it must be for you to find the perfect home for each of your dogs. And, Evie has found a perfect home! She is happy, healthy, making new friends every day and making me so happy I cannot even find the words.

And, so I say, THANK YOU (and so does my friend Cathy) and keep up the good work. May the Lord bless you in this endeavor that you have devoted your life to.

PS … Evie says hi and thank you!

To Whom It May Concern:

I have adopted two dogs from Bright Futures Rescue in Creston, and in every aspect of the adoptions I have found Jane Smith to be caring and professional. It was obvious that her first concern was the placement of the dogs in the right home.

My first experience with Jane was in 2012 when I saw a Petfinder posting about a young little terrier that I would name Maisie. Maisie had been a stray and unfortunately, was also heartworm positive. Thank goodness for Jane, who discovered Maisie at animal control. If she wouldn't have taken Maisie into rescue, the poor dog, although she was otherwise healthy, would not have been treated but euthanized instead. Although I am an experienced dog owner, none of my dogs had ever had heartworm. Jane patiently explained all to me and at her own expense, had Maisie treated before the adoption was final.

Page 18: Bright futures letters no addresses

The adoption process was very thorough. I filled out an application, then Jane brought Maisie to meet me. A second visit to check out my home also occurred. Jane traveled for an hour to bring Maisie to my home in Cleveland and make sureall would be ok. Jane provided me with all of the appropriate vet check documentation: Maisie had been spayed and made up to date on all her shots. Maisie was so well cared for during her time at Bright Futures and arrived at my home clean and happy.

Jane both called and emailed me to check in on Maisie and to see how everything was going. She also made it clear that if things didn't work out, she would take Maisie back. She also gave me some great advice several times about helping Maisie through the transition to my home--Maisie had obviously become very attached to Jane, and Jane was obviously attached to Maisie too. It was a tearful parting, but Jane knew Maisie was in a good home.

Page 19: Bright futures letters no addresses

I was so pleased with the adoption through Bright Futures that about a year later I visited Jane at her home in Creston several times to get the right match for Maisie. Jane carefully introduced me and Maisie to about 5 different dogs during these visits. It was clear that Jane did not want to rush anything; rather, her primary concern was getting a good fit for me, Maisie and for the new dog. Every single dog she introduced me to was clearly well taken care of. I feel fortunate that Jane matched me and Maisie with Molly, who has become a great addition to my home. Molly, too, had all her shots and vet documentation, and was obviously well cared for at Bright Futures.

I had such a great experience both times at Bright Futures that I recommended that a friend in Columbus meet a little Jack Russell Jane had available for adoption. Jane took the same great care with this dog and his new family, and he's been a great addition to my friend's family too.

Page 20: Bright futures letters no addresses

I'm so glad I met Jane and had such a positive experience at Bright Futures! She is doing such important work and helping dogs who have been abandoned, abused or who might be euthanized. I'm forever grateful that she has made my life so much fuller by helping me find my two precious little girls.

Sincerely,

Kathy Taylor

To Whom It May Concern:

I was asked to document my experience with Jane Smith, of Bright Futures Rescue, this being my first and only experience with adopting a rescue pet. I came across ‘Bright Futures Rescue’ on the internet in 08.13 while searching to find the ‘right’ dog to adopt for our family. Upon seeing and reading the description of a young male multi-poo named ‘Tiny Tom,‘ I began emailing ‘Bright Futures Rescue’ using the contact information provided on the website. I was contacted by Jane Smith, Bright Futures Rescue, who explained through email that Tiny Tom was in her temporary care until a permanent home could be found. I expressed immediate interest in wanting Tiny Tom, however was told of the screening process and was directed to complete the very lengthy and detailed application.

Once the application was completed and forwarded to Jane for review, I followed up with multiple phone calls and emails expressing how badly we wanted this dog

Page 22: Bright futures letters no addresses

to be part of our family. After a few weeks we were invited to visit with Tiny Tom at Jane’s home, which solidified our desire to adopt this dog. Jane was very thorough in giving us Tiny Tom’s history- how long he had been under her care, his daily routine along with medical documentation of recent vaccinations and neutering. I was amazed at all the animals Jane looked after; furthermore I was more impressed that Jane was able to rattle off each animal’s name, their date of arrival, their history, and where they were in the adoption process. The animals were amazingly passive when Jane would speak to them…hence I dubbed her the ‘animal whisperer.’ I believe the animals knew that Jane was on their side, she was their voice. I was ready to bring Tiny Tom home that day but Jane explained that the next step in the adoption process was a house visit, keeping Tiny Tom’s best interest foremost.

A week later Jane visited our home with Tiny Tom while watching his reaction to us, his new surroundings and new sister, a bichon puppy named Lilly. Jane stayed a while that Friday afternoon, coaching us on what we could expect with a rescue dog and the actions we could take to ensure a smoother transition. When she

Page 23: Bright futures letters no addresses

felt comfortable leaving Tiny Tom with us, a look of both sadness and joy came across her face; it was quite obvious the compassion and love she had for her ‘temporary’ family member. Over the weeks that followed Jane followed up on Tiny Tom’s status; just another example of her commitment to ensure the rescues have found the ‘right’ home. I am proud to say that Tiny Tom is no longer ‘tiny;’ we refer to him now as just ‘Tom.’ Tom has adjusted wonderfully and is a very important member of our family.

I highly recommend Bright Future Rescue – Jane Smith -to anyone who is looking for a rescue or even wants to discuss the rescue process. The level of commitment, time, and love displayed by Jane to these helpless and abandoned animals is truly amazing; she is a precious gift.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or needed additional information.

Sincerely,

Leslie Coleman

About three years ago my wife and I decided that our young Golden Retriever needed to have a canine companion to help round out our family. She started looking online (on Petfinder) for a location near Ashland, Ohio,  and found a small mixed breed female that my wife had a special feeling about. The young dog had been rescued by the Bright Futures Rescue located in Creston, Ohio.

The more we talked about it the more we knew we had to try to give this cute, fuzzy little dog a permanent home. We contacted Jane Smith at Bright Futures to set up a meeting. Later that same day we got to meet our Jezebel for the first time at the PetCo store in Wooster. She was absolutely adorable. Perky, tail wagging and we thought just perfect for our family. We filled out an application to adopt her on the site and Jane agreed to bring her to our house in Ashland that same day so she could make sure we were a suitable fit for Jezebel. Although Jane was trying to

Page 27: Bright futures letters no addresses

find a permanent placement for her, she just wasn't going to turn her over without checking us out first. Thankfully, Jezebel and our Golden Retriever, Rawley, hit it off immediately and have become inseparable. We cannot imagine what our lives would be like without Jezebel. She is such a loving, easy-going dog. Thanks to you, Jane, for rescuing her so that she was available to enhance all of our lives. She is a great companion and I couldn't imagine coming through our door without being greeted by her happy face and that ever-wagging tail.

It is also incredible to us that we still get contacted by Jane periodically to check and see how Jezebel is doing. Please keep up your good work. Thanks for being so kind and caring. These animals really need you.

Hi Jane, Remember us?  Karen and the little guy you called Mickey. Coming up on his third birthday, I just wanted to thank you so much for placing Rylee with us.  I was really frustrated with adoption agencies looking over me because I didn't have a fenced in yard.  I have a German Shorthaired Pointer (Sophie) that I am sure you remember and although we lived in town I walked her almost everyday and she and I have been best buddies for eight years.  Obviously you took one look at her and could tell that I was the type of person that loves dogs and treats them very well.  Others couldn't get past the fence to get to know us.

Page 29: Bright futures letters no addresses

Now thanks to you we expanded our family and Rylee and Sophie are great friends.  I think Sophie was lonely since I work and Rylee has been great company and visa versa.  They play so well together and go everywhere with me that allows them through the door.  They might be a little spoiled but that is okay. I appreciate the time you took to meet us all first and let the dogs feel each other out and then coming to my house just to make sure that Rylee felt comfortable in that atmosphere.  We moved into the country in October and although I still don't quite trust him to not run off they have long tie chains and zip lines and can be outside with me all of the time and they love it.  I hope to try to get together with you soon so you can see how great he looks.  I think you would be pretty happy.  In the meantime I will continue to send pictures to you.

Page 30: Bright futures letters no addresses

I can't thank you enough for making the perfect match!!!!!  Keep up the great job that you do.  It is very obvious to me that you care very deeply.  I remember you crying when you had to leave him as I probably would have too but he is having a great life. Sincerely, Scott, Karen, Sophie and Rylee

If jane rescues a sick animal she works hard to bring it back to a healthy status. Takes it to vet takes care of it gets the medicine it needs. She does everything humanly possible to make that animal well. She has done this countless times and succeeded. Shame on the people who broke into her house and did this. She should be given an award not persicuted . It is not anyone's business if she is not the perfect housekeeper as long as her animals are clean and we'll taken care of.Diane Bramley

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to you in reference to Jane Smith of Bright Futures Pet Adoption and Rescue. Ms. Smith has been most helpful and professional. Her thorough explanation on the adoption process was exceptionally noteworthy. Her guidance in helping me in choose a most suitable dog and the subsequent long-term care of a (my) rescue-dog are the reasons I believe she is exceptional and an extremely qualified individual at what she does. During my initial contacts with her, I had the pleasure of experiencing how deeply and thoroughly dedicated she is in making sure that a potential adopter is fit to take on the responsibility of adopting one of her charges. A few years ago, I had gone through an adoption agency in Cleveland, Ohio. They did not, in the least bit, display the meticulous hands-on screening process that I had experienced than I did with Ms. Smith and Bright Futures Pet Adoption and Rescue. Today, I am blessed

Page 34: Bright futures letters no addresses

with the companionship and incredible bond of one of the healthiest and loving dogs I have ever come in contact with. If you wish to contact me regarding my commendation of Ms. Smith, you may call me if you please.

 To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing in support of Jane Smith of Bright Future Rescue.  As a volunteer with Animal Companion Rescue Foundation, I work to get the abandoned dogs in our local animal control to rescues so that they will not be euthanized.  Over the past year, we have worked hand in hand with Jane, who has rescued several of our dogs.  There is not a rescue anywhere in which I have more confidence than Bright Future Rescue because of Jane and the way in which she cares for and about the dogs.  She dearly loves each one, completely vets them including spaying or neutering, and even treats them for heartworms, which many rescues won’t do.  One dog we sent was extremely timid and shy, while another could be aggressive with other dogs.  She worked diligently with each of these to help them overcome their issues while searching for the perfect home to match their personality.  During this period she continually communicated with us as she kept us informed on their progress.  Many rescues want to adopt their dogs out as quickly as possible to collect the adoption fee, but Jane will keep a dog for months until she finds the perfect home that fits them.  She carefully screens the families, and puts the dogs, their care and their well-being first.  After a dog is adopted, she sends us a picture of the happy dog with its family, and she checks on the family periodically to make sure that things are as they should be with

Page 37: Bright futures letters no addresses

their dog. We greatly appreciate Jane and the excellent way in which she loves and cares for her dogs.  She is undoubtably one of the best rescuers with whom we work, and we work with rescues all over the Midwest, the East Coast, and Florida.  Jane is level headed, caring, conscientious, and diligent in her rescue work, unlike some of the rescuers we deal with who are fanatical and crazy.  She doesn’t cut corners, and she has always been forthright and honest in our dealings with her. People in your area should be very proud and thankful to have such an excellent rescue run by an incredible, amazing lady like Jane Smith, who demonstrates the utmost integrity in the operation of the rescue and care of the dogs.  She is certainly a wonderful ambassador for your county, area, and state, and we love working with her.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely,Janie Jones, Volunteer with Animal Companion Rescue Foundation, Atlanta, GA5 Wayne St. SW Rome, GA 30165

To Whom it May Concern,Over a year ago a sweet dog caught my eye on facebook. Her name was Bubbles and she was near death on the euthanization list at Pikeville, Kentucky shelter. Another woman from a city in far North Quebec offered to adopt him if he could get transport to her. I live in North Bay, Canada which is 12 hours from the lady in Quebec and about 13 hours from Pikeville. I could only make arrangements to be gone for one night as I am the caretaker for my 80 year old father so I asked the volunteer lady at the Pikeville shelter to recommend me to someone who may be able to get Bubbles from the shelter and closer to me so I could drive down to get her and be back the next day and the lady immediately said Jane at Bright Futures Rescue. Jane and I would talk long distance for days to make arrangements to make this rescue work and she did absolutely everything in her power to assist me and even worked until very late at night to make connections to get Bubbles to her rescue in Ohio from Kentucky for us. I was able to save Bubbles because of Jane. She even drove her to my hotel the night I got in after a 9 hour drive. She is one of the kindest and

dedicated people I have had the pleasure to meet in my many years of rescuing dogs in Canada. This was my first rescue from the USA and thanks to Jane I was able to get Bubbles to her new family in Quebec the following week.Attached are photos of Bubbles (now named Belle) before (in Pikeville shelter) and after (in her home in Rimouski, Quebec)Please feel free to contact me regarding my dealings with Jane.Sincerely,Susan Dunnemail-

To Whom It May Concern:

Jane Smith called my house on June 22nd, 2014 and asked if I would be willing to write a letter describing the adoption of my dog from her Rescue. I informed her that I would gladly write a letter as I have been exceedingly happy with the adoption.

I adopted my dog (Sinder) from Jane approximately 2 years ago. The process was very positive. She was polite on the phone and asked appropriate questions, which to me suggested a reputable and caring Rescue Service. We then arranged a face-to-face contact to meet Sinder. This visit went very well on all counts. My reaction to this encounter was that Sinder was well taken care of. He demonstrated positive affection for Jane and was welcoming to me as a new person as we were being introduced. She encouraged me to walk around and interact with Sinder. As we were doing so, there were other animals (cats, dogs and a horse) all within my scope of vision. All looked well-kept and were friendly

Page 42: Bright futures letters no addresses

and relaxed in this farm environment. We further discussed my adoption of Sinder. Jane encouraged, and we arranged, to have my other dog (Kurt) come and visit. Therefore, a 2nd visit was set up. This too went very well and we proceeded with the adoption.

Jane was very caring throughout the entire process. She offered her future support, if needed, even after the adoption and qualified that if the adoption did not work out I should feel free to return Sinder back to her farm. Jane also called about a month after the adoption to ‘check-in’.

Sinder’s transition into my home went well – indicative of the positive situation he had enjoyed at Jane’s. Kurt had been adopted from the Pawsibilities in Twinsburg and while they too did very well by him; he had had more transition issues possibly due to being in a caged setting with only the minimal attention that even the most attentive staff could provide. I am happy to say, that for both of my adopted dogs, we are all very thankful for those who saved them from being euthanized and allowed them to find their ‘forever homes’.

Page 43: Bright futures letters no addresses

If I was in the process of wanting to adopt another dog into my home, I would not hesitate to utilize Jane’s rescue. She has a big heart and obviously loves her rescues, has appropriate care and concerns about where she adopts her dogs to, has good follow-thru, and provides a valuable service.

Respectfully,

Beth Tady, PCC-S

Just a quick note to all your volunteers to say that it's been over a year and we still can't believe our good good luck and utter joy in bringing Sadie into our family. I am actually quite negligent in my communication to you since adoption day was May 4th but we are busy busy busy being retirees, selling our houses and seeing the country!  We travel in our motor home as well with just the car for short trips, take long hikes and walks, and simply live day to day and could not have a better companion along the way than we have in our Sadie girl:). Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for all the time and effort you tirelessly give on a daily basis to enrich families like ours with a worthy rescue dog.

It's a funny story. I did not want this dog. I did not want a dog. No, not because I don't like dogs. Just because I knew about the responsibility that comes from having a pet and I could envision how having a dog would change our lifestyle as we both approached retirement. Less spontaneity to travel. Less spontaneity, less travel. More worry. More attentiveness to something, some being, that I was not dialed into having to provide attention to and was willfully not currently doing.

But ... since Joanne really, really wanted a dog and since Joanne was really, really determined to have a pet -- and, I was sure, would go forward with plans to have one no matter what excuses I came up with or what reasons I provided against doing so -- I came to understand that mine was a losing battle and it would be smart to find a way to learn to accept what was otherwise going to occur whether I liked it or not.

So I tried to maneuver. I told Joanne to wait until she was retired so that the dog would have the benefit of her attention during the day as well as ours in the evening. Thankfully, she agreed.

Page 47: Bright futures letters no addresses

Then something I didn't count on happening happened -- she retired! The school district determined that it had to retire as many of the longest employed personnel as they could to cut costs and Joanne, having worked in the school district since the day she graduated from college, was in that category. They made her the kind of offer they talked about in "The Godfather" -- one that can't be refused. So she said okay and retired.

There went my ace in the hole.

So it was that on that fateful Saturday just over a year ago, after Joanne (and I to some much more limited extent) were made sad by Joanne losing three or four what otherwise appeared to be good, well mannered, full of promise rescue dogs, we set out for a trip into Ohio in the farm country somewhere near the Akron area. I really, honestly had no real idea why we were going. Was it to look at a dog? Was it to get me used to the idea of a dog? Was it to bring a dog home? Was it something that Joanne had cooked up on her own regardless of my wishes and I was being tricked into without knowing what was in store? I had no clue. I did know that the trip had to do with a dog and a rescue person about 145 miles away and that was all I knew -- and cared to know. I was, decidedly, not a happy camper. So much so that on the way, Joanne and I exchanged not more than a dozen words if I remember correctly. Then to top it all off, we could not find the place we were

Page 48: Bright futures letters no addresses

meant to go to on the GPS and when we finally did manage to find the place despite the inadequate GPS directions, the rescue person was nowhere to be found -- only barking dogs, horses, cats and a large farm. Joanne told me to calm down that the rescue person would be there shortly. But I was anything but calm, that's for sure.

Then, finally, up came the rescue person. Into the car I stayed. Dogs, horses, cats, noise, disconnect. I was not having a fuzzy feeling about anything. It then became clear to me that there actually had been plenty of discussion about this day between Joanne and the rescue lady and it became equally clear that that discussion was something I knew absolutely nothing about. Yes, a recipe for divorce on such an otherwise beautiful sunny May morning.

Then something interesting happened. The rescue lady, lovely, warm, dedicated and very attractive woman, came to the side of the car where I was sitting with the window down and, in spite of my attitude, completely disarmed me. All on her own. She looked me squarely in the eye and welcomed me to her farm. I looked back at her and told her that her barn had a date plaque on it that coincided with the start of the Civil War. Oh yes, she told me, the Civil War featured prominently in life in her area and she proceeded to tell me about all the Civil War history from her area, including reciting the numbers of boys from the area who fought in the war for the Union and the many Civil War mementos

Page 49: Bright futures letters no addresses

she had collected over the years since she had moved to Ohio from Wisconsin (where, on her own, she raised two lovely and talented daughters in the process and managed to stay employed enough to feed her girls and run the farm while still doing all of the animal rescue work).

Well ... I fell in love with this woman on the spot and my entire disposition was changed immediately for the better.

She asked Joanne if she wanted her to bring out the dog, which Joanne did, and Joanne asked if she could take the dog for a walk while I continued to talk to the rescue lady, which the rescue lady said was fine. Out came the rescue lady with the dog, away went Joanne with the dog and the rescue lady and I continued to talk Civil War stuff and history and family and destiny and how she got into this line of work and ... I began without any further ado to feel at home.

Joanne came back shortly with the dog in tow and it was clear -- crystal clear -- that the two of them had already formed a strong and respectful bond together. In a matter of a few minutes later, papers were delivered, a check was given, pictures and hugs were exchanged and off we went with the dog in the back seat of the car home to Erie, Pennsylvania.

Page 50: Bright futures letters no addresses

On the way home, the dog, true to billing, was perfect as a traveler. She lay down in the back seat of the car and made not a peep all the way home. No barking, no whimpering, no nothing. Almost as if she was waiting for this long lost ride and was finally settled in and on her way to the place she was meant to finally get to. How did she know that? How did we know that? I don't know but somehow, some way, we all just did.

Halfway home, I was able to avoid Joanne's normal admonitions and sent a brief text to family members telling them that we got a dog, the dog is in the back seat of the car, the dog is lovely and quiet and happy and everything seemed to be looking up for all of us.

The dog, of course, is our wonderful Sadie and the rescue lady, of course, is our wonderful, memorable, terrific Jane.

So often in this life I have looked back in my rear view mirror and came to see that what was meant to happen in my life did in fact happen and what was meant to happen in my life never once passed me by. This little rescue dog, whose story, whose breed mix, whose history we know only the dimmest details about, is the very little dog I would have written the description of if I had been asked to write out the characteristics of the perfect dog I would be able to find myself settled with if a dog were to be

a part of our little family.

Page 51: Bright futures letters no addresses

Sadie is that dog and Sadie is now a huge part of our family.

Smart, obedient, not at all aggressive, cute as a button, not whiny, young and healthy (she can run like the wind and never seems to get tired), energetic, responsive, affectionate. And much, much more. She doesn't beg when we eat -- in fact she doesn't make a peep at all when we eat. She simply lays at our feet quietly, contented to be next to us. Unless called to jump into our laps, she sits or lays on the carpet next to us, happy to be in our immediate vicinity, always waiting for permission and an invite to cuddle in our laps. She hops up on the bed when it's time to go to bed, snuggles for a while and then when we tell her it's "sleepy time", she hops down and goes into her crate and onto her blanket where we hear nothing further from her until we call her up onto the bed in the morning (but she doesn't come up until we call her).

She has been a fabulous traveler. Loves to go in the car and sits or lays in the back seat quietly just as she did when we left Ohio to bring her back to Pennsylvania. Loves, too, to go in the motor home. She lays on the couch or on the floor while we travel, never getting in the way and is always, always excited to go. She loves her crate and we take it everywhere with us as it is such a welcoming security thing to her.

Page 52: Bright futures letters no addresses

Most of all, she loves to take walks and run when we let her. She comes when called and stays right with us. I am a steadfast advocate of allowing her off the leash and letting her run and explore. We are at a point with her now that when we walk and bikes or runners come our way, she knows that it is time to draw near to us and she then stays next to us patiently until the biker or runner passes, never barking at or interfering with the biker or runner. She is sociable to people just like she is to dogs and other animals. She is, in fact, friendly to everyone.

How does it get any better than this, I ask.

She has been, from the beginning, just a delight to have with us, a being that has made nothing less than a huge and positive addition to our life. I thank my lucky stars for the moment I met Jane and told her about her 1860 plus barn date and for her looking me in the eye in a way that I was able to realize was a clear and unambiguous message that all going to be okay. Was it meant to be that Joanne struck out on the three or four dogs whose rescuers either did not get back to her or did not update their website to reflect that the pet she was asking about had already been adopted out? Was it meant to be that I was able in my own stubborn way to set aside my reservations and distress enough to get in the car and take a 145 mile road trip into Ohio to meet Jane and my destiny with this wonderful little dog?

Page 53: Bright futures letters no addresses

There are things in life, I am persuaded, that are just meant to be and this, for me, is one of them.

So at the end of the day, Joanne and I are both filled -- truly filled -- with absolute joy over this fabulous little dog. We have all bonded as a family (I was even allowed to name Sadie when we wanted to change the temporary name the shelter gave her in Kentucky when they did not know her given name). Yes, Joanne bosses Sadie like she tries to boss me, but both Sadie and I know what we need to do to keep Joanne under control so that she thinks she has us bossed successfully when the two of us know otherwise. But overall, what we know without question is that we have all been given a one-of-a-kind Gift, a surprise that was somehow meant to come to us despite all the questions, all the unsettledness, all the reservations we had -- a Gift that settled all those things in us, and a lot more.

There will never come a time that I will not remember this funny story. It is a story that allows me to know that I, as an older dog myself, can still learn new tricks.

I thank my lucky stars for this wonderful Gift -- our wonderful and one-of-a-kind Sadie -- and I am so very happy that there are great people like Jane in this world who have cared enough to become the instruments of love they are in order to place good dogs with needy humans so that all of us become as blessed as we deserve.

Thanks, Jane. Thanks, Joanne. Thanks, Sadie. Cheers.Denis

To whom it may concern:My husband and I had a positive experience when we adopted a rescue Toy Fox Terrier from Bright Futures Rescue, Creston, OH. Jane and her staff were courteous, helpful, and informative. After seeing a rescue Toy Fox Terrier (Lexus) on Petfinders.com, I contacted the rescue place by phone and followed up with an email in October, 2011. After filling out an application sent by Bright Futures Rescue, we were informed that we were selected to adopt “Lexus”, contingent on how our two other dogs would react to Lexus. An appointment was set up to meet Lexus at the rescue and to introduce our two dogs on neutral territory. Everything went well, so we set up an appointment to bring home Lexus. Lexus arrived in the evening on 11/04/2011 and we talked for a while with Jane and her staff member. Jane handed over Lexus’ dry food and her special stuffed toy. The transition went well. Tara (Lexus) has been in our home for over two and a half years. She has developed into a confident and happy dog. We were fortunate to be selected as her adoptive family. Agnes Tyna

To Whom It May Concern:

This message is to share with you a little bit about myself, as well as my experience with meeting Jane and going through the adoption process of a rescue dog.

My name is Shawn Kunkle. I am 27 years old and I recently relocated to the greater Cleveland area for work. About 3 months ago, I made the decision to adopt a rescue dog. I came across Frankie online and instantly fell in love with him. It was Frankie's online photos and profile that eventually allowed me to meet Jane.

Before I adopted Frankie, I asked Jane dozens of questions about Frankie's history, tendencies, and personality. Whenever I had a question, Jane responded in a timely fashion with whatever information I asked of her. At times, the response was almost instantaneous. I was very pleased with her accelerated style of communication.

Page 56: Bright futures letters no addresses

On the day that I eventually adopted Frankie, I met Jane in Wooster, Ohio. She provided me with all the paperwork and information I needed, and she even accompanied me to the local Tractor Supply store there to lend her advice on dog food, chew toys, collars, bowls, and doggy treats. I was very thankful for her willingness to do this, especially since this was my first dog adoption and I was relatively clueless about many of the brands out there.

Even 3 months after I've had Frankie, I still contact Jane to let her know how Frankie is doing. She has shown a genuine concern for him, as well as a passion for his continued growth and happiness in my home.It is my sincere belief that Jane provides this type of treatment to anyone looking to adopt a dog from her rescue. I believe she has a burning desire to help animals that have been neglected or wronged by selfish or careless human beings. People like Jane really make a difference for animals looking for loving, lasting, caring homes.

Page 57: Bright futures letters no addresses

The help and support Jane has provided me cannot all fit into one e-mail message. Hopefully this brief summary of my experience has been evidence of her help to me, but more importantly, to animals like Frankie.

If you'd like to talk with me directly about my experience, I can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you so much and have a great day.

It is amazing how one person can come into your life and leave such a positive impression that you feel personally connected to that person for the rest of your life.  Jane Smith is that person to me.  Because of Jane's love and commitment to helping homeless dogs, our family has been blessed with the perfect pet of a lifetime, our wonderful Dexter.

When our previous beloved dog passed away unexpectedly, I was devastated.  After some time my daughter, Katie, and son, Cory, knew my heart needed a new dog to love and care for.  They started searching for a  dog for our family on PetFinder. They found several dogs on Jane's site, Bright Futures Rescue.

I called Jane and immediately connected with her...sharing her love and compassion for all dogs.  I soon learned that Jane knows dogs.  She is knowledgeable of breed personalities, health issues, and behavioral/emotional problems  She loves and respects each and every dog, and researches and analyzes particular behavioral issues.  Every effort is made to make sure she matches the right pet to its perfect family. After our initial phone conversation we narrowed our choices down to just a couple compatible dogs.

Page 59: Bright futures letters no addresses

Together our family filled out an online application for more preliminary information about our family lifestyle and environment. Dexter, a wire-haired terrier mix seemed to be our perfect fit.  Jane arranged a meeting of our family with Dexter at a local PetSmart.  During that meeting Jane took note of how we interacted with Dexter, and his response to us.

Jane then brought Dexter to our home to ensure a safe and clean environment, to observe Dexter's interaction with our two in-house cats, and to make sure all members of our family were "smitten" with Dexter and totally committed to giving him a safe and loving home.

Jane ensured us that all of her dogs are doctored and provided healthcare to the best of her ability. Dexter was neutered, de-wormed, shots were updated, and then he was groomed, with flea/tick preventative applied.  Jane also called our Vet to gather facts and pertinent information about the history of care provided for our previous pets.

Page 60: Bright futures letters no addresses

Finally the day arrived for our "Dexter Homecoming". I'll never forget looking out at Jane's car in the driveway just in time to catch a glimpse of Dexter poking his head from the back seat to give Jane a kiss. Jane stayed for a while that day, I'm sure very reluctant to have to say good-bye to Dexter.  She had so much love in her heart for him, and said (with tears in her eyes) as she left that day, "This is what I do. It breaks my heart to say good-bye to my dogs, but my goal is find them all a loving home.  I've done that here for Dexter.  I'll keep in touch."  Jane had made it clear to us that if for any reason we were unable to care for Dexter, she wanted him back.

Katie and Cory also felt closely connected with Jane and have periodically sent pictures to her of Dexter's life with the Hartzell clan.  In a few weeks we hope to once again get together...Jane is anxious to see how well Dexter has grown and thrived. During our many phone conversations Jane once shared with me a personal conviction, a pact she made with God, to help find loving and safe homes for his homeless creatures.  I was so incredibly touched.  I'm sure God is so proud of her amazing work, and is smiling down on her each and every day.  For the Hartzell family, she has been an angel for all of us! Respectfully Respectfully submitted,    Gail Hartzell

Hi Jane! I've been meaning to update you, so please accept my apology for not getting that done.

Neeko is now Mina - short for Wilhelmina, and we love, love LOVE her!!! She is such a good, good girl! The pictures are of her running in the backyard, sleeping on my lap, laying by the Christmas tree, and sitting on the couch with Brian.

She loves her toys, her blankie and burning rubber around the back yard, especially in the snow. She MAKES you play fetch with her if you're sitting on the couch by bringing you a toy. She sleeps with me every night and has only had one accident in the house and that was on her first night with us.

My boys fell in love with her too and can't believe how good she is! She loves to chase the cats, and they handle her with a paw to the snout that only stops her til next time! She has made us all very, very happy, and has helped us immensely with grieving for our beagle Chelsea. I feel like we hit the lottery with this girl.

Page 62: Bright futures letters no addresses

So, kudos to you, Jane, you did a great job fostering her and preparing her for her forever home and we are very grateful.

Have a great holiday and thank you for all you do, you're an angel.

Love, Pam, Brian, Jeffery, Jarrad and Mina : )

I just wanted to let you know that I do not believe a word of any of this Jane...I would, and have, highly recommend any animal be sent to you!  You are so good with the animals and truely understand how to get into their "psyche" to go about training them the right way!  You even work with Guardians of Rescue and have given that presentation on training dogs to be PTSD service dogs and how can a person be such a bad rescue when...you called the vet down here and ordered and paid for that worm pill yourself to be given to Viper in our shelter...he probably would've died if it hadn't been for you!

Jane, I heard what has been happening. After working with your rescue over the years I know that this must not be true. I have seen how you who adopted take care of all your animals. You have sent me many pictures of the dog and their new families. I have also contacted a few of them and they said you a great person who cares for these dogs that no one wanted.

I am hopeful that the truth will come out. Please know I will help in any way and take all my Pulaski dogs back and adopt them out. with the same love and caring that you do.
