Low-voltage Less power for the same light

The secret of the innovative IRC halogen lamp lies in the principle of thermal recovery. A special infra-red coating on the inside of the bulb reflects the heat back to the filament. This means that less energy has to be supplied from outside to keep the filament at its operating temperature. The result is greater luminous efficacy. DECOSTAR® IRC lamps offer much higher luminous efficacy than conventional dichroic reflector lamps. A 20 W DECOSTAR® IRC, for example replaces a 35 W standard dichroic reflector lamp. In other words, they save energy by using less power to produce the same amount of light.

An all-round talent with a bright future

MINISTAR® follows the trendtowards miniaturisation in lu-minaires and opens up com-pletely new and revolutionaryluminaire designs. For the firsttime on a halogen reflectorlamp, the reflector is integra-ted in the pin-base lamp itself. The secret is a silver high-techcoating that not only looksbrilliant but also, among otherthings, greatly reduces thethermal load in the luminaire.MINISTAR® Axial Reflectorfinally brings much needed directional light to existing pin-base luminaires.

MINISTAR® Axial Reflectorperforms all the functions ofmodern spot lighting in a formthat is more compact thanever before. Recessed ceilingluminaires and flexible lightingsystems are just two examplesin which the benefits of theseproducts really shine through.

Refreshingly brilliant halogen light

DECOSTAR® COOL BLUE®

is a new brilliant lamp that is ideal for jewellers, glass andceramic shops and art galler-ies – and wherever cold lightcolours are preferred, such ascommercial or domestic set-tings where the accent is on“cool” design or a “metallic”environment.

This innovative dichroic reflec-tor lamp has a refreshinglyhigh colour temperature of4,500 K, extra long average lifeof 4,000 hours and a frostedrear surface on the reflectorfor soft glare-free scatteredlight at the back.

The secret of the specialcoolness of DECOSTAR®

COOL BLUE® compared witha conventional DECOSTAR® issimple but brilliant. A newhigh-tech coating on the covershield filters out the “warm”red component from the lightemerging from the front of thelamp. This results in a muchcooler halogen light with acolour temperature of 4,500 K,which is much closer to that ofnatural daylight.

Bright light for bright people

A constant good impression

The DECOSTAR® TITAN 35/51dichroic reflector lamp is idealfor professional applications. On average, it will last about4,000 hours, which is twice aslong as standard products. And because of its special re-flector coating its luminous in-tensity and colour impressionremain constant throughout itslife.

The answer to heat build-up

The “classic” dichroic reflectorlamp is patently unsuitable ina recessed ceiling luminairebecause 2/3 of the heat it ra-diates is directed backwards.High temperatures in the lumi-naire can reduce the life of the lamps and jeopardise the reliability of the entire lightingsystem. The answer to thesetemperature problems isDECOSTAR® ALU. Its reflec-tor has an aluminium coatingso no heat is emitted at theback due to direct infrared ra-diation. Low-pressure technol-ogy offers a further advantagein that the luminaire does notneed a separate shield. Heatcan therefore escape forwardswith no restrictions at all; theluminaire, base and lamphold-er systems stay cooler.

For cool ideas

Dichroic reflector lamps areideal if heat-sensitive objectshave to be well lit. Most of theheat produced by the lamp isemitted through the rear of thereflector.

This reduces the amount ofheat in the light beam by 66 %.So you can place sensitive objects in high-intensity light-ing without worrying aboutthem. For such applicationswe recommend DECOSTAR®

STANDARD 35/51.

Thanks to its bulb pinch technology, HALOPIN® meets the strict safety requirements of IEC 60432-3 because it safely and reliably shuts down at the end of its life.

The bulb pinch technology developed by OSRAM makes a considerable contribution to the safety of the HALOPIN®

OSRAM lamp and halogen technologies under the spotlight

Inno v a tions that light the way forward

Halogen lamps have conquered the world in only a short time. There are good reasons for this. They include the quality of light, the directability of the light and the “freedom of expression” that this offers. The innovative products developed and used by OSRAM have helped to guide developments in halogen light along the right lines. The technologies we use are explained on the next few pages.

Note: • Halogen lamps for

outdoor applications and damp locations may only be operated in luminaires approved for the purpose.

• Mains voltage halogen lamps are available on request with country-specific base types and/or voltages.

Conventional quartz allows UV radiation and visible light to pass through unchecked

Doped quartz filters out UV radiation. Visible light is virtually the only radiation to leave the lamp

UV protection as standard

OSRAM is the first lamp manufacturer to commit fully to UV-FILTER technology. Almost the entire halogen lamp range has been converted to versions with UV-FILTER quartz. The “doped” quartz (in other words, enriched with UV-absorbent materials) used for the bulb prevents unwanted UV components from being emitted in the light. This applies in particular to harmful high-energy UV-C and UV-B radiation. Low-energy and therefore less harmful UV-A radiation is reduced by half.

Benefits: • Easily complies with the

strictest UV protection thresholds

• Reduced UV-related bleaching effect

The halogen c y cle

The bulb on a halogen lamp always remains clear. This is thanks to the halogen in the filler gas which prevents the vaporized tungsten from being deposited on the bulb by combining with it and flowing back to the hot filament. The tungsten is then deposited back on the filament and the halogen released in the process returns to the cycle.

Cool Beam technolog y

Dichroic reflector lamps are ideal if heat-sensitive objects have to be well lit. Most of the heat produced by the lamp is emitted through the rear of the reflector. This reduces the amount of heat in the light beam by up to 66 %. So you can place sensitive objects in high-intensity lighting without worrying about them. In addition, decorative light for special lighting accents is emitted at the back.

The IRC principle in detail

The secret of the innovative IRC halogen lamp from OSRAM lies in the principle of thermal recovery. The special infra-red coating (IRC) on the inside of the bulb reflects the heat back to the filament, so the heat remains inside the lamp. This means that less energy has to be supplied from outside to bring the filament up to its operating temperature. Luminous efficacy is increased as a result, and further improved by the xenon gas filling.

Advantage: • Cost savings of up to 65 %

are possible1)

Low-pressure technolog y

In the bulb of a conventional tungsten-halogen lamp the operating pressure may be as high as 25 bar. The operating pressure of a low-pressure tungsten-halogen lamp on the other hand is no more than 2.5 bar. For this reason the low-pressure lamps are approved for use in unshielded luminaires in accordance with IEC 60598. Because of the different pressures there are differ-rent gas flow conditions in the bulbs of the tungsten-halogen lamps. Whereas there are strong convection currents in a high-pressure lamp, heat and gases in the low-pressure lamp are moved by uniform and calm diffusion.

Convection flow in a high-pressure lamp, made visible by streak formation

Diffusion in a low-pressure lamp: no eddies visible, less heat is removed

There are further benefits as a result: • The luminous flux is more

constant throughout the life of the lamp

• The premature failure rate is greatly reduced

• Power losses through the filler gas are reduced

Pinch technolog y

Pinch technology is a completely new process for manufacturing mains voltage halogen lamps. A thin and extremely sensitive filament wire is fixed directly in the bulb by “glass knobs”. The lamp construction is more robust as a result. The lamp has a higher life expectancy – even if exposed to vibrations or jolts.

A patented fuse system ensures that the lamp is instantly switched off in critical situations. The lamp can therefore also be used in unshielded luminaires (according to IEC 60598-1).

Dimming, environment protection and standards

Dimming with convenience and efficienc y

Dimmers for individual brightness control have a number of advantages. For example, they reduce energy costs since the lamps are supplied only with the power that is actually needed. Conventional transformers have to be operated with leading-edge phase dimmers for inductive loads. Electronic transformers however mostly need trailing-edge phase dimmers. The electronic HALOTRONIC MOUSE® transformer is an exception; it can also be dimmed with a leading-edge phase dimmer for inductive loads.

Suitable for trailing-edge phase dimmers for inductive loads

Suitable for leading-edge phase dimmers

a) Leading-edge phase control: a freely definable portion of the ac voltage reaches the ECG

b) Trailing-edge phase control: a freely definable portion of the ac voltage reaches the ECG after passing through the zero crossing point

Leading-edge and trailing-edge phase control

Depending on the type of control, an appropriate electronic dimmer circuit is included in the power circuit.

a) In the case of leading-edge phase control, a freely determined portion of the sinusoidal ac voltage reaches the load.

b) The trailing-edge phase control circuit on the other hand switches at the zero crossing point of the sine half-wave and then simply cuts off the rest of the ac voltage curve.

Both circuits have advantages and disadvantages but if adequately dimensioned and appropriately used they can meet all relevant requirements. As a general rule, leading-edge phase dimmers for inductive loads are the more cost-effective solution. The higher-quality trailing-edge phase dimmers are quieter in operation even in critical situations.

Perfection and high qualitystandards

Quality is the prime considera-tion at OSRAM – the key con-cept is Total Quality Manage-ment. OSRAM has been certi-fied to DIN ISO 9001 since1994. To ensure that OSRAMproducts meet consistentlyhigh quality standards in series production, the qualityassurance systems and themachines used to manufactu-re the lamps have been deve-loped and produced by OSRAM itself. This enables us to ensure the reliability ofour technical data.

Our environmental objec-tives are clearly defined

You cannot know where youare going unless you have aclear destination in mind. Thisalso applies in environmentalmanagement. OSRAM has setitself a number of objectivesfor the next few years. For ex-ample, every factory is com-mitted to reducing its produc-tion-related environmental im-pact still further. OSRAM hasachieved one of its objectivesat its Bruntal site within the ti-me-scale envisaged. There, aninstallation that produces virtually no waste water hasbeen developed for manufac-turing filaments. All the acidsand wash water used is keptfully within the process cycle. The first waste-water-free in-stallation is a great plus for theenvironment. And OSRAM hasundertaken to keep the publicinformed of the measures ta-ken and the results achieved –for example in its Environ-mental Report.

Disposing of tungsten-halogen lamps

Tungsten-halogen lamps con-tain only very small quantitiesof halogens and halogen hy-drogen compounds. Thesesubstances are classified asharmful but because of thereextremely small quantities (justa few millionths of a gram perlamp) there present no dangerwhatsoever to man or the environment even if severallamps break.

No special precautions areneeded for their disposal.
