The fi rst pupils from Hong Kong and China joined Brighton College in the early 1970s.

Forty years on, we now teach nearly 100 pupils from Eastern Asia, and our Chinese community has contributed to the College’s recent success story. We are now the leading co-educational school in England.

The purpose of this evening is two-fold: fi rstly, a coming together of the Brighton College Family in Hong Kong and China. My colleagues and I are very pleased to be able to see so many former pupils and indeed current pupils, as well as parents. It is an honour and a privilege. Secondly, we want to share our development plans with you.

Ever since the school’s foundation in 1845, philanthropy has always been at the very core of Brighton College’s existence. Today, the generosity of our parents and alumni has allowed us to begin to signifi cantly improve the school, helping to realise our ambitious vision for the campus. We want to create a school which provides inspiring, state-of-the-art facilities which our increasingly brilliant teachers and pupils deserve.

Over the last fi ve years, Hong Kong and Chinese parents have contributed over £1million to the school’s development, and tonight is our fi rst big chance to say thank you.

Our future success is largely reliant on you, and there is still more to do. Just as you or your children have benefi ted from the philanthropy of those parents and alumni before you, your generosity will provide for generations of pupils to come. Making a gift to Brighton College is an excellent way to celebrate your family’s association with one of the world’s leading educational institutions, and there are number of naming opportunities available in our new developments, which will enable you to leave your mark at the school for generations to come.

I am very pleased to share further details about our exciting plans for the school, including a new Teaching Building and a Centre for Sports and Science. 2016 will see the establishment of the Brighton College Hong Kong Trust, a Chinese charity which I hope will promote and celebrate further giving among our parents and alumni, and also allow for tax effi cient giving.

Thank you for all that you do for Brighton College, and indeed all that you are able to do for us in the future. We are very lucky to have such a supportive community here in Hong Kong, and I am delighted that we can come together to celebrate this tonight.

Kind regards,

Richard J. CairnsHead Master
