Under construction: Traders’concern over seafront worksTraders on Brightonseafront have spoken of theirfrustration and concern overthe two-year works aroundShelter Hall.

The building under thearches at the bottom of WestStreet was deemed unsafein October 2013, promptingemergency measures, andan £11 million governmentfund, to keep the A259 fromcompletely collapsing.

Works began in Octoberlast year and are set tocontinue in stages overthe next two years, butwith summer around thecorner, some businesses areconcerned.

John Butcher, co-owner ofJJ’s Café, said: “I have seen adrop in trade because peopledon’t want to sit next to abuilding site, with dust intheir noses.”

His view to the sea is cut offby fencing and equipment, and the sounds of drills, sawing, and diggers fill theair.

Steve Poole, owner ofCafé de la Mer, said: “I thinkthings have been done sortof piece-meal, it doesn’t seemthat well thought out, butyou’re dealing with a funnyenvironment with businesseshere in the middle of it all.

“In the end we’ll all bebetter off, as the councilaren’t only thinking of rightnow, they’re thinking 10 to20 years in the future. It’s adifficult balance.”

A council spokespersonsaid: “We want to stressfirst that we appreciate thatdoing work over a summeris far from ideal. Howeverwe have no choice. Theproject is essential to stopthe seafront road collapsing. If that happened the impacton seafront businesses andthe city’s economy would be

much more severe and for amuch longer period.”

Guardino Rospigliosi-Pallavicini, assistant managerat the Fortune of War, wherestructural issues were firstidentified, said: “It’s not quitethe same, looking out thereand not seeing people on the

The charismatic economistwarns of tough times aheadIt wasn’t the toughest crowdhe’ll ever have – a theatre fullof Guardian-reading Brightonand Hovians. But he was verypersuasive all the same.

Yanis Varoufakis, theformer finance minister forGreece, cleverly ingratiatedhimself to the sell-out crowdat the Brighton Dome bysaying he was pleased to bein the People’s Republic ofBrighton and Hove – and inthe constituency of his goodfriend Caroline Lucas.

The outspoken socialistwas joined on stage by theequally erudite GuardianeconomicseditorPaulMason. The pair were recentlycompared to ‘Chairman Mao’and ‘Mickey Mouse’ by Torychancellor George Osborne.

The poster-boy of theGreek left gave his side of thestory on the economic crisisin his homeland, had somealarming anecdotes about hisexperience of the European

Union, and talked aboutBrexit – he wants Britain toremain in the EU. His reasonfor the latter, was his warningthat the fragmentation ofEurope could see historyrepeat itself (in the lead up tothe Second World War) – buthe wants a root-and-branchreorganisation of the EU, withtransparency at its core.

He spoke about the ‘rulingelite’, and warned that wecan look forward to a futureof a tsunami of capitalbased on Ponzi growth andunsustainable debt.

He concluded that thiswould lead to a crisis incapitalism.

The former Syrizapolitician promoted his newpolitical movement – DiEM,to democratise Europe, aswell as his new book AndThe Weak Suffer What TheyMust?: Europe, Austerity andthe Threat to Global Stability.

The first weekend of theBrighton Fringe markedthe debut of a beer festivalwith a twist; beer brewedexclusively by female MasterBrewers.

The ‘FemAle festival’ beganin Norwich three years ago, andfounditswaytoBrighton, and the Marlborough Puband Theatre, this year.

Along with a variety offemale-led musical actsduring Saturday’s streetparty, brewing lessons, stallsand DJs, the festival served 18different ales.

Everything from saisons, stouts, pilsners and pales

were available with namesincluding Rock Lobster, 05Hop Angeles, Little Sharpieand Beerdo.

Erica Horton, founder anddirector of FemAle festival, said: “It was a bit difficult tofind female Brew Mastersfrom Norwich when wefirst started, so we had to gofarther afield, but now wehave a wonderful selectionfrom all over.

“There are so few female-brewed ales available that it’sbecome all about bringingthem together in one place, and being inclusive.”

Inclusivity was an

underlying theme to thefestival, demonstrated by thechoice of a queer pub whichalso hosts the Pink Fringe.

Co-founded by theMarlborough’s dedicatedmember of staff and co-artistic director DavidSheppeard, Pink Fringe isa space dedicated to givingqueer and LGBT artistsa space to showcase, andchallenge perceptions.

Ms Horton said: “As awoman, you want to createthat safe space, you know it’simportant, but sometimesit’s about moving over andleaving that space to others.”

Patcham ‘undersiege’ from newhousing projectsA meeting to discussproposals for 44 assisted-living flats at Old LondonRoad attracted more than150 concerned residents lastweek.

Members of ProtectPatcham were joined byward councillor GeoffreyTheobald, at the meetingin All Saints Church lastWednesday.

The proposal bydevelopers McCarthy andStone was displayed at apublic exhibition on April 27.It has not yet been submittedto the council but that hasn’tstopped residents fromvoicing their opposition.

Cllr Theobald said: “We’veall been here before, Patchamis constantly under siege, andhere is another illustration.”

Five homes at the OldLondon Road site would bereplaced with a block of 44flats for people aged 70 andover, selling for between£320,000 and £400,000.

Increased congestion, alack of parking and the riskof flooding were amongresidents’ chief concerns.

Cllr Theobald, referringto floods in 2000 and 2014,said: “We’ve got enormousdrainage problems. Wherewill all the sewage go? Wehave seen what’s happenedtwice now.”

The statement wassupported by drainageexpert and resident David

Harris, who warned Patchamresidents of the flood in 2014.

He said: “I knocked on thedoors of those who wouldbe affected to say ‘get yourstuff out of the cellar’. Somelooked at me like I was mad.”

One resident pointed outthat Patcham features morethan eight retirement homesalready, which could makethe area unwelcoming toyounger generations.

A spokesperson fordevelopers McCarthy andStone said: “Our consultationwith the community is an on-going process and we havealready made amendmentsto these proposals followinginitial meetings byreconfiguring the buildingslightly, resulting in the lossof two apartments.”

One day when walking into work I stumbledacross a lovely little road in Hove. RichardsonRoad has nearly everything you would ever

need on it including a butcher, fish monger, offlicence and baker.

This was a great discovery and something that I havealways loved about working and living in Brightonand Hove; there is always another hidden gem rounda corner somewhere.

One resident of Richardson Road is Drury’s coffeehouse, where I spent a surprisingly sunny lunch timerecently.

Drury’s coffee originated in London in 1936 and wasstarted by three Italian brothers. The branch situatedin Hove is also a family affair, having been owned bymembers of the Davids and Lewis family for the last14 years.

The current owners, Elaine and Stephen, took overthe premises eight years ago running both the café,wholesale distribution and a machine showroomfrom the one building.

When you initially step through the door there isa distinctly traditional feel to the interior with thewholesale counter and wall of Drury’s produceimmediately in front of you. The rest of the café isspacious and a traditional coffee house feel remains.

On the day I visited the customers represented adecent cross-section of the local community withpeople from all walks of life in attendance.

I order an Americano at the counter from the wideselection of teas and coffees and go for a New York-style bagel for my lunch. There is a wide selection ofsandwich fillings all of which can be presented as asandwich, baguette or bagel. There is also a varietyof cakes and bakes should you be after something alittle sweeter.

Given the unusually bright weather I take my placeat one of the many outside tables and join the goodpeople in Hove in watching the world go by. After abrief wait my coffee and then my bagel arrive.

Both are of a good standard; the bagel has a welcomeamount of pastrami and pickles with the all importantmustard kick; the coffee is smooth without beingoverly strong, which is good for me as I am only an

occasional coffee drinker. I enjoy my time sitting inthe sunshine contemplating some things I have to dolater and making some notes in my to do list.

I chat with Elaine for a while about their business andhow it came about; she clearly enjoys her work andbeing a part of the local community. It is a great spotto be in and Elaine is proud of what they are doing;even if there are challenges in being a small businessin the age of the multi-nationals. Before I took myleave Elaine offered me a piece of cake.

I had originally planned to skip dessert as had a bigdinner planned that evening; my gluttonous self feltotherwise, and I was glad that it did.

I opted for a home made chocolate brownie and wasgiven a moreish and moist slice of deliciousness.Few things in life are as satisfying on such a baselevel as a well-made brownie and this is what I got.I was so busy having a “moment” with my cake thatI completely forgot why I was there and did not geta picture.

If you are not already familiar with this little spot inHove I would recommend taking a trip to Richardson

Road and Drury’s. In the space of one road you canpick up everything you need for a weekend mealand then stop off for some light refreshments beforeheading home. Surely that is one of life’s most simplepleasures.

You can find the same fresh produce and products atDrury Coffee’s second shop located at 197 ChurchRoad, Hove. This location is easily accessible andperfect for business meetings.

Toxic pollution levels down, but there’s more work to do

Greener buses andsustainable travel choicesare the reasons air qualityappears to be improving insome of Brighton and Hove’smost polluted areas.

New council figures showthat toxic nitrogen dioxiderates are decreasing in placeslike North Street (a 21 percent reduction since 2012),and Terminus Road (20 percent decrease).

But while nitrogen dioxidelevels have improved acrossthe area, the council saidroadside pollution in theworst offending areas stillbreaches UK and EU legallimits. These include NorthStreet, Western Road,LondonRoad,ValleyGardens,Queen’s Road, TerminusRoad. New England Road.Lewes Road, and other citycentre spots.

The reduction in emissionsfrom cars and buses

have made a substantialcontribution towardsreducing nitrogen oxidelevels; local bus companieshave been investing ingreener vehicles with helpfrom government grants.

But although there hasbeen an improvement,Cllr Gill Mitchell, chair ofthe council’s environment, transport and sustainabilitycommittee, said there’s morework to be done.

She said: “We’re heading

in the right direction butthe journey is by no meanscomplete.

“We need to make furtherimprovements by using less-polluting travel modes andless-polluting vehicles. Thebus companies continuing tomake improvements to theirfleets will bring much betterair. The council has wongrants totalling about £1.5min recent years to help themdo this and we’ll keep doingall we can to deliver cleaner

air for the city.”Chris Todd, of Brighton

Friends of the Earth, said:“It’s obviously good news thatpollution levels are reducing, but we should have met thetargets years ago. Progress isstill too slow. It’s estimatedthat there are around 150premature deaths due to airpollution in the city. This isa shocking statistic: if therewere that many people beingrun over and killed everyyear, there would be a publicoutcry. The problem is thatair pollution is invisibleand so, by and large, are thedeaths.

“The council could domore and faster, particularlyaround the worst pollutedarea by The Clock Tower. Itshould ban private cars fromthis area which would speedup buses and give pedestriansmore time to cross.

“It’s not enough to waitfor cleaner engines to comealong, the council needs tobe taking pro-active actionnow.”

Scheme to help older people settleback at home after hospital stintMore than 1,000 people inBrighton and Hove havebenefitted from an initiativethat helps older people returnhome after a hospital stay.

The ‘Assisted Discharge’scheme is a joint ventureby the British Red Crossand the Royal SussexCounty Hospital, and aftera successful first year, it islooking for more volunteers.

One Brighton residentwho has benefited fromthe scheme is 80-year-oldRaymond Attrell.

Raymond had lived mostof his adult life as a lodgerin Kemptown with a couplenamed Eileen and LawrenceLaforgue. Lawrence died inthe late 90s, and Raymondand Eileen continued to livetogether.

Eileen died last year – whenRaymond was in hospital –and he was suddenly alone. He said: “The evenings werethe worst, when I would sit

alone with no-one to talk to.”With the help of carers,

Raymond began to adaptto life on his own. Then, inMarch this year, he sufferedan accident at home, burninghis leg with a flask of coffee.

“It was very, very painfuland I had to go in to A&E,” said

Raymond. “By the time I hadbeen treated it was gettinglate at night and the hospitaldidn’t have the resources totake me home. I felt quiteupset as I really wanted tobe able to get home. Thenthe Red Cross people cameto meet me, and said they

could take me, which waswonderful. My house wasvery cold, so they put the fireon for me, made me tea, andgot me ready for bed. It waslovely to be cared for like that.

“After that, the Red Crosscame to visit me at homeseveral times to make sure I

was managing OK.“I do get lonely, I do. And

having someone to talkto when I was unwell andworried made me feel a lotbetter.”

Anna Holecz, the Red CrosssupportworkerwhocollectedRaymond from hospital, said:“I visited Raymond at homea few days after we’d pickedhim up from hospital. On thesurface he seemed cheerful, but when I dug a little deeperI started to realise he was stilldealing with the bereavementof losing his friend.

“Our team continued tovisit Raymond for six weeks. One thing we did was to puthim in touch with ‘Timeto Talk’ in Brighton – abefriending service that willbe able to continue visitinghim. I’m glad we were ableto help him settle back in athome, where he wanted tobe, and clear a hospital bedwhich would have been takenup unnecessarily.”

Gentlemen’s DayWin a day at the racesFancy a flutter? Enjoy a great

day with friends at the races

It’s that time of the year againwhen Brighton Racecoursethrows open the stable doorsfor a summer season ofracing and events.

And the Brighton & HoveIndependent team took atrip to Kemptown this weekto find out what all the fuss isabout.

Suited and booted, andwith tickets to the PremierEnclosure, we grabbed aprogramme and got settled atthe bar to pick our winners.

There were seven racesthroughout the day, with thefirst kicking off at 1.50pm,and the last at 4.50pm.

Knowing nothing abouthorse racing, the programmeincluded a comprehensiveguide on each race, with tipson how to place your bets.

Despite that, I chose mywinners by the best name(Let There Be Light, Lyfkaand Wordismybond), or the

colour of the jockey’s silks –a tactic that worked well, as Iwon five races in a row!

The races whereadrenaline-fuelled andexhilarating – with puntersclutching their betting slipsas they cheered on theirwinner. It’s a great day out forthe office – or indeed for a dayout with friends.

We also signed up to athree-course meal at Silks, the racecourse restaurant atthe Premier Enclosure.

The restaurant’s terracehad spectacular views over

the racecourse, the sea andthe South Downs.

It was fine dining in arelaxed environment. Insidethe restaurant, you don’thave to miss a race – thereare TV screens and a bookieon hand so you can continueto place your bets over yourmeal.

I went for a duck starter,a delicious beef main, anda cheesecake for dessert. Itwas the perfect break in theday – and left us refreshedand ready to return to thetrackside for the final race.

A day at the races is a greatexcuse to get your friendstogether or treat your staff toa day out.

With more than 20 eventsrunning throughout thesummer, highlights includeGentlemen’s Day on May27, the three-day Festivalof Racing on August 3 to 5– including Ladies’ Day onAugust 4 - and the Family FunDay on August 21.

Sir Ian McKellen, a long-time supporter of Stonewall

Proud to speak upfor LGBT people

in Brighton

I am extremely proud torepresent a constituency witha substantial LGBT populationand was both saddened andangered to hear about the recenthomophobic attack that took

place on Brighton seafront on BankHoliday Monday.

Brighton is a diverse, vibrant city andit is this diversity that makes it such aspecial place to live in.

In January 2014, following commentsby a UKIP councillor that theintroduction of equal marriage was toblame for flooding in parts of England,I spoke of my pride in representingsuch a large LGBT community in PrimeMinister’s Question Time, publiclyasking David Cameron if he was inagreement that “contrary to the beliefsof some, it is always very sunny inBrighton?”

The Prime Minister joined me inpraising Brighton and paid tributeto my “vigour” in standing up for myconstituents.

I am a long-standing supporter ofequal marriage and played a key rolein the passage of the Marriage (SameSex Couples) Bill through the House ofCommons in 2013.

The passage of the Marriage (SameSex Couples) Act was a tremendousachievement that has brought joy toso many couples. I was delighted to beinvited to attend one of the very firstceremonies in the country which tookplace in Brighton’s Royal Pavilion andwas able to present this first same sexcouple a copy of the Act that the PrimeMinister had signed for them.

I am a strong supporter of theStonewall charity and have taken part intheir annual Brighton Equality Walks formany years. Stonewall does so much forthe rights of the LGBT community and Iam always pleased to lend my support.

During the last Parliament, I becamethe first MP to take a public HIV test inthe Palace of Westminster to encouragemore local people to test for the virus, raise awareness of the issue and reducethe stigma associated with having thetest.

I have also raised the importantmatter of PrEP with Ministers at theDepartment of Health.

I am proud to be a strong voice for themany LGBT people in Brighton, and I willcontinue to stand up for their rights, andcontinue to press for equality in the UKand across the world.”

AN EXPERIENCE TOCHANGE THEIR LIFE

L ast Thursday the city votedin citywide elections, and theresults were good for Labourin Brighton and Hove, with usincreasing our share of the voteand widening the gap over the

Conservatives and Greens on last year.At the same time, in cities around thecountry, from Liverpool to London toBristol, Labour took office or strengthenedits position, with mayors and councillorswinning power on the back of innovative, pragmatic policies with broad appeal.Labour now controls almost every majorcity in England and Wales, and it is from thecities that the Labour revival will come aswe show we are competent and trusted togovern.

A year ago Labour won the largestnumber of seats on Brighton and Hove CityCouncil for the first time since 2003, andtook office bringing to an end four years ofGreen Party leadership in the city.

We immediately set about restoring faithin the council, focusing on delivering thebasics and tackling the big challenges thecity faces: housing and jobs, poverty andinequality, growth and infrastructure.

Within a hundred days I was pleased to

report some excellent progress. This has continued at a pace.New council homes are under construction, our Employment and Skills Taskforcehas issued its recommendations, and ourFairness Commission is about to do thesame, bringing together everything wehave at our disposal to tackle poverty andinequality. We have delivered new strategies fordealing with rough sleeping and refusecollection, and we’ve pledged to do more onmental health and ethical social care.

As I have written in this column over thepast two weeks, we are bringing in a billionpounds worth of investment into our city’sseafront, we have put in place our CityPlan to manage growth over the next twodecades. We are working on major projects and newschemes which will deliver thousands ofnew homes, including truly affordable‘Living Wage’ flats for rent, to make someprogress towards putting a home withinreach of those who currently cannot affordone.

We have set out an ambitious program ofwork for our second year, building on thefoundations of the past twelve months. The

challenges remain immense. As the government cuts £168 million

from our Budget, as it threatens us withfurther measures that mean we may haveto sell £28 million worth of our local homeseach year, and our schools remain underthreat from an ideological academisationproject that the government has not fullywithdrawn from, we cannot simply retreatinto empty protest as the Greens wouldhave us do. We have to act to support ourresidents and deliver the jobs, homes andservices they need in whatever way wecan. Innovation and co-operation basedon Labour values will continue to be at theheart of what we do.

Like many, I am impatient for progressand change. However, unlike Sadiq Khanin London or Marvin Rees in Bristol, Idon’t have the power of a mayor. UnlikeBirmingham and Manchester, we here inBrighton and Hove have no majority, and noleader and cabinet system to drive throughour policy agenda. That makes it harder butalso fuels our determination to succeed, not just to secure that majority for Labourin three years’ time but to deliver the betterlives our residents need and the future ourcity deserves.

The Carnegie Building

GeoffreyTheobald

A new home forHove Library

must be perfect

Leader of theConservative

Group onBrighton and

Hove CityCouncil

T he Labour administration’sproposal to relocate HoveLibrary from its currentlocation in the historicCarnegie building onChurch Road to a purpose-

built extension to Hove Museum toform a new ‘cultural centre’ has dividedopinion.

The Conservative group has kept anopen mind on the plans from the start.

Unlike the Green Party, we are notopposed in principle to the librarymoving, provided that the alternativeresults in an equally good (or better)service for local residents.

Despite numerous briefings fromofficers and requests for furtherinformation, I am still far from clearwhether this is the case or not.

We had still not been reassuredsufficiently just days before a decisionwas due to be made last month by thePolicy & Resources Committee and notbeing able to count on support from theGreens at this committee, the Labouradministration decided to defer thedecision, rather than raving it voted outaltogether.

We supported this decision to givethe Labour administration even moretime to address some of our remainingconcerns about the move.

We set these out in a letter toCouncillor Morgan to which we are stillawaiting a reply.

Essentially, we don’t believe that afull and proper business case has beencarried out for the project.

This is vital if the public are tobe reassured that all options havebeen properly and fairly explored –including retaining the library in theCarnegie building – and that all relevantinformation is in the public domain.

In particular we have asked for:1. Sight of the detailed cost estimates

for the repair of the Carnegie Buildingand for any repairs required for HoveMuseum should a merger of the twofacilities not go ahead.

2. A full breakdown of the anticipatedrevenue cost savings of the move.Apparently a significant proportion ofthese savings arise from a reduction inthe book fund, so why is this contingenton relocation?

3. Reassurance over the legitimatepublic concern regarding the disposaland use of the Carnegie Building – ifpossible the building should have acommunity use.

4. Reassurance over the council’scapital valuation of the Carnegie buildingand more details about the financialconsequence for the Council of anyshortfall in the actual sum obtained.

5. An assessment of whether theLibraries Extra programme couldhave delivered savings at the CarnegieBuilding.

During the debate we had on this issueat Full Council, it was regrettable thatonly one Labour councillor expresseda positive vision for this new combinedfacility, the remaining members of theLabour Group threatening that failureto co-locate the Hove Library and theMuseum would result in a significantnumber of other branch libraryclosures across the city. This riled alot of members of the ConservativeGroup as it is a matter for the councilhow the Council’s budget is spent. TheConservative Group is fully supportive ofthe remaining elements of the LibrariesPlan for the city; indeed we wereinstrumental in the development of theparts of the plan affecting Hollingbury

Library. However, our concernsregarding the relocation of the libraryin Hove will need to be addressed if weare to consider giving it our support andas such we await a response from Cllr.Morgan.

The Case of theChocolate CreamKillerby Kaye Jones

The BookDoctorwith Laura Lockington @bookloversupper

You know that expressionthat we all use – ‘onlyin Brighton’. Well, thiscertainly applies to thisbook: The true story ofChristiana Edmunds andher thwarted pash on her doctor. So thwartedin fact that she tries to poison his wife and child. When that doesn’t work, and he gets suspicious shecomes up with what she thinks is a simply marvyidea, and that it is to randomly poison the wholetown to get the blame off her. Hmm, what couldpossibly go wrong?

This is a staggering account of just how easy it was(stop a child in the street, bung them a copper, andforge a note saying you’re a chemist in North Streetand have run out of arsenic or strychnine and Bob’syour uncle.) She then buys some chocolate creamsfrom Maynards in the centre of town, randomlyplaces her (poisoned) chocolates back in the bag, grabs another urchin and gets them to returnthem to the shop. The shop then places them backin stock and the whole of Brighton plays Russianroulette with bon bons.

The book is full of horrendous yet fascinatingfacts about Victorian food safety, the ‘cure’ forhysterical women, the treatment of the insane, andgeneral views of women at the time. A true accountthat makes for great reading. But maybe not over abox of chocolates.

Novelist Georgette Heyer lived in Kemp Townand Adelaide Crescent

Women’sHistoryRegency romance

queen in Hove

by Louise Peskett

T his is my last columnfor a few weeks as I’ll bebusy doing my ‘NotoriousWomen of Brighton’ and‘Notorious Women ofHove’ tours during May.

How better to end with a woman whowas a phenomenally successful writerwhile spending a short time living bothon the Kemp Town seafront and thenAdelaide Crescent during the SecondWorld War?

It’s fitting that Georgette Heyer – theso-called ‘queen of Regency romance’ -has connections with Brighton and Hove. It’s the home, after all, of that jewel ofRegency buildings, the Royal Pavilion.

The Prince Regent and many of thepeople who surrounded him pop up ascharacters in her swashbuckling andescapist stories, such as ‘Regency Buck’,‘Faro’s Daughter’ and ‘Arabella’. In fact,it’s not unusual, while guiding in theRoyal Pavilion, to come across a visitorwhose interest in Brighton and thebuilding started with a Heyer novel.

There were plenty of other strings toher bow. Born in Wimbledon in 1902,Heyer also penned a great number ofdetective novels and thrillers. From1932 she was publishing on averagea staggering one romance and onethriller per year. When she died in1974, despite having always avoidedinterviews and shunning publicity, which she considered ‘nauseating andquite unnecessary,’ 51 of her novels werein print.

Her career started early with herfirst novel, ‘The Black Moth’ originallywritten as a story to amuse her youngerbrother when she was only 17. From thatday on she must rarely have been seenwithout a pen in her hand. Even when,in 1926, her mining engineer husband, was transferred to Tanganyika – in what’snow Tanzania – and they lived in a grasshut without modern amenities. Duringthe Second World War – around thetime she was living in Adelaide Crescent– Heyer’s brand of historical escapismwith dashing Mr Darcy-type heroes, feisty heroines, sumptuous castles andaristocratic misadventures, spiced withhumorous dialogue and clever twists, was particularly popular. She saidherself ‘I think I should rather like it ifI were sitting in an air-raid shelter, orrecovering from the flu.’

I’m sure Heyer would be the first toadmit that her Regency romances, whichtook her about six months to write, werenever going to be to everybody’s taste.

Like many authors who writecommercial women’s fiction today, Heyerwas victim to snobbery with ‘serious’readers criticising her for churning hernovels out so quickly and putting fast-paced plots and racy characters before

literary technique. Incredibly, not one ofher best-selling books was ever given areview.

Her millions of fans around the worldwould beg to differ and point out thather meticulous research and knownfaithfulness to historical fact are just oneof the things that make her books intosmall masterpieces. At the end of herlife she’d amassed over 1,000 referenceworks and cupboards full of detailednotes on all aspects of Regency life.

For her novel ‘An Infamous Army’which features the Duke of Wellingtonas a character, she studied his speechesto ensure that every word uttered in thenovel had been spoken or written byhim in real life. Her description of theBattle of Waterloo in her 1937 novel ‘AnInfamous Army’ was once commendedto recruits at Sandhurst for its vividaccount of the battle.

However much she divides modernreaders, Georgette Heyer’s successrumbles on. 59 editions of her books arecurrently in print, and in the last fiveyears alone over half a million copies ofher works have been sold.

Historical fiction is enjoying anotherhey-day and her queen of the RegencyRomance crown isn’t in danger of beingdislodged any time soon.

Last year, while unveiling a blueplaque on the house in Wimbledonwhere Georgette Heyer spent her firstfour years, fan Stephen Fry, said ‘I firstdiscovered Georgette Heyer at schooland was completely hooked. She is afabulous, witty writer who captured thelife and language of Regency Englandsuperbly.’

I doubt whether Maurice Ravel, when he began to compose hiscelebrated Boléro in 1928, idlypicking out the tune with onefinger on the piano (dressed, weare told, “in a yellow dressing-

gown and a scarlet bathing cap”), had inmind to provide a nest egg for his brother’swife’s masseuse’s husband’s second wife’sdaughter. But that is how it has turned out.

This drum-tapping, foot-tapping,repetitive, mistitled, 17-minute orchestralballet score became an instant hit, much toRavel’s surprise. He himself called it “devoidof music” and even “rubbish”. AlthoughRavel is one of my favourite composers, Itend to agree. I don’t know what ÉvelynePen de Castel Sogny thinks of it, she whocurrently receives an estimated £2 million ayear in royalties for it, plus more for Ravel’sother works. Though the French copyrighthas just expired, American copyright lastsuntil 2032. The geyser will continue to gush.

Copyright formerly did not exist. Allcreative works were there to be reused.Shakespeare lifted what he fancied fromwherever he found it – Holinshed, Plutarch,Montaigne. Handel “took other men’spebbles and polished them into diamonds”.

The opening motif of Beethoven’s FifthSymphony is said to be “a straight lift”from a work by Claude-Joseph Rouget deLisle. And so on. Nowadays, all three wouldbe up to their necks in lawyers’ fees and

plagiarism claims. Or King Lear and theFifth would never get written.

The original copyright act of 1842 was initself no bad thing, providing authors withmuch-needed protection from piraticalpublishers and other parasites. It fixedthe term at a modest seven years from anauthor’s death, or 42 (why 42?) from thedate of first publication. Later this wasincreased to 50 years after death. Thenin 1995 the EU fixed the term at 70 yearsafter death, while in 1998 the US extendedits own already excessive 75-year term to95 years. Where will this end? Europe willpresumably eventually match America. Then 95 will be rounded up to 100 years.

None of this benefits the authors, ofcourse. They’re dead. It’s those who havesomehow inherited the copyright whobenefit from this largesse, and these maywell be people unrelated to the author, evenpeople the author detested or would havedetested.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s copyrights oncebelonged to a bank, who sold them to anunrelated family, and have been the subjectof decades of bitterness and litigation. Until2012, a company called Chorion – “a brandcreation and management business whose

strategy is to create longlasting and durableinternational brands from well-known butpreviously underperforming internationalproperties” – owned Georges Simenon,Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler,Enid Blyton, Dennis Wheatley and others.(Christie is now owned by Acorn MediaGroup, Blyton by Hachette.) There wascontroversy in 2000 when it transpiredthat copyright in the works of John Clare, the 19th-century poet who died in povertyin an asylum, belonged to a professor whohad purchased it for £1. A few months ago,the Anne Frank Fonds, a Swiss company, claimed that copyright in Anne Frank’sdiaries should extend until 2050, 70 yearsafter her father’s death. Even the jingle“Happy Birthday to You”, composed in 1893,was earning Warner Communications $2million a year until a ruling last year.

By contrast, I like the note WoodyGuthrie appended to “This Land is YourLand”, back in 1940. “This song is copyrightin US, under seal of copyright #154085,for 28 years, and anybody caught singin’ itwithout our permission will be mighty goodfriends of ourn, cause we don’t give a dern.Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodelit. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do.”

Reasons to look after your thyroidNatural health tips from CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine).

The thyroid gland oversees the functioning of every cell in our body. It is critical for optimal health and governs the entire hormonal system. Ourhormones all work together like a symphony orchestra with our thyroid gland being the conductor. When our thyroid is functioning at suboptimal levels,we can experience a range of unwanted symptoms including: weight gain, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, low libido, depression and insomnia, to namejust a few.

Iodine is the most important nutrient involved in thyroid health. Iodine along with tyrosine, selenium, zinc and B vitamins, synergistically nourish andsupport our thyroid gland. For this reason it is imperative we have an adequate intake of iodine in our diet or consult an accredited naturopathicnutritionist for advice on supplementation and suitable iodine dosing. Iodine-rich food sources include seaweed, seafood and salt. It is important tonote that not all salts are created equal. Chemically produced table salt added to refined and processed foods is not an adequate source of iodine, or ahealthy option for that matter. Himalayan crystal salt or Celtic salt are the best forms, containing naturally occurring iodine and other essential minerals.

Our thyroid requires adequate sources of fat and protein. Good quality protein sources include sustainable fish, organic grass-fed cuts of meat, andlegumes. Healthy fats from wholefood sources, such as avocado and nuts, can be added to meals to support thyroid function.

There is a growing body of evidence supporting a gluten-free diet for those with autoimmune thyroid problems, such as Hashimoto’s and Grave’sdisease. Gluten molecules can pass through the lining of the small intestine and into the bloodstream before they are fully broken down, particularlyfor those who have compromised digestion or a weak gut lining. The immune system detects gluten molecules as intruders and attacks them. Becausethe molecular structure of gluten closely resembles that of the thyroid, the immune system will also mistakenly attack the thyroid, too. Eliminatinggluten from the diet can prevent this autoimmune response.

In the case of an imbalanced thyroid gland, it is important to take a holistic approach and address the root cause of the problem. Nutritional, herbaland lifestyle modifications as advised by a trained naturopathic nutritionist can go a long way in supporting your thyroid and balancing your hormonalhealth naturally.

Nutritional Therapist Tegan Philip has written this article for CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine), which trains students for careersin natural therapies. Join CNM Brighton’s talk on Thyroid Health on Thursday 23rd June at 6.30pm. www.naturopathy-uk.com

Digging for theBard turns up ahost of surprises

Digging for Shakespeare

ReviewLaura CartledgeContributor@LSCartledge

Digging for Shakespeare,Roedale AllotmentsWith Google putting theanswer to everything at ourfingertips, intrigue is now arare and wonderful thing.

However, Brighton Festivalfavourite Marc Rees servessurprises up by the spadefulin Digging for Shakespeare.

Audiences, or should thatbe participants, do knowin advance that it will be ‘atrail and a quest’ throughallotments to meet knittedcharacters.

They also know the pieceis inspired by James OrchardHalliwell-Phillipps – a 19thcentury renowned scholar, shed dweller and hoarder

of Shakespearean raritiesthat reportedly used to livenearby.

But it turns out this isn’teverything, and that theremarkable piece is far morethan a sum of its parts.

As such it is brilliantlyhard to put into words, as it is– completely – an experience.

Which means I also don’twant to give too much away.

Roedale Allotments, located near HollingburyGolf Course, is an enchantingsetting – more than apt for aMidsummer adventure.

There is enough to pleasea traditionalist, as you learna lot about the eccentricand the Bard, but literarylightweights will also not bedisappointed.

From the ticket, whichstates ‘tweed is appreciated’,to the closing cup of tea and

seed swap, the whole thingfeels like a celebration.

Of what, I suppose, is up tothe spectator.

For me it was acombination of things;nature, wordplay andobsessive hobbies.

It managed to make meboth sad that I hadn’t heardof Halliwell-Phillipps before, but extremely glad I had now.

Marc has not just managedto put on a show, he’s createda tribute.

And in doing so he hasdemonstrated, beyondquestion, the power oftheatre without even somuch as a stage.

Digging for Shakespeareis on twice daily, May 14, 15,21 and 22, starting at the OldSteine bus stop.

Visit brightonfestival.orgfor tickets and details.

Vic Godard and SubwaySect with The BitterSprings, The Green DoorStore, Brighton, April 30

It all started onNovember 8, 1978, whenI’d paid my £2 entrance feeto my first ever gig. It wasbeing held at The Top RankSuite at the bottom of WestStreet.

The headline band wasThe Buzzcocks, but theirsupport was none otherthan Subway Sect. Little didI know that my very first gigwas going to be legendary!

Remember, it was thehey-day of punk and thecrowd still then showedtheir ‘appreciation’ byspitting at the bands. TheBuzzcocks were gettingvery tired of this so theydecided not to play anencore. The punters wereangry and when it wasapparent that the bandweren’t coming back, thecrowd rioted. God knows

what Vic Godard and hispals thought at the time.

Well, here we are nearly38 years later and goodold Vic is still on the case.Music is in his veins and heeven did a couple of trackswith his support band TheBitter Springs. Those whohonour The Fall will likethem and singer SimonRivers certainly likes a bitof banter with the crowd.

Vic Godard formedSubway Sect back in 1976at Sex Pistols managerMalcolm McLaren’s,request as he neededanother band for the 100Club Punk Festival. Victhen toured with The Clashin 1977 on their White RiotTour and Subway Sectreleased their debut recordNobody’s Scared in 1978.

Vic has punk ethicsingrained into his DNA andthat’s why he is a grounded-with-the-fans sort offellow. The crowd certainlywarmed to him and hisSubway Sect tonight.

Opinion

There were plenty of street food stalls at the Hove Lawns event

Steven Edwards was promoting Etch at the Foodies Festival

Food and DrinkSharing a love of food and

drink at Hove festival

T he early May bank holidayweekend saw the latest‘Foodies Festival’ hit HoveLawns as it works itsway around the country. This is the seventh year

that the festival has been in town andit was back with three days of cookingdemonstrations, food stalls, drinktastings and music. I decided to headdown on Sunday to get a feel for whatthe festival is all about.

Unlike the Brighton and Hove FoodFestival this is a national event thatcharges for entry into the festival site.Once you are in you can then register forfree to attend the onsite demonstrationsand events.

There are also plenty of placesoffering free samples – although mostwith the hope of selling you something. As such there is a distinctly corporateundertone to the event that comes withthe territory.

I was lucky enough to pick the bestday for sun and spent a good few hoursstrolling around the site soaking up theatmosphere.

There was a really nice mix offamilies, friends and couples loungingoutside the bars and food stalls gettingtheir fill of food and drink. Music wasprovided by a Brighton unsigned actsstage and despite the steadily growingcrowds everyone appeared jovial and ingood spirits.

My first port of call was to catch acooking demonstration from Sussexbased duo Steven Edwards and JoshStanzl who were there to promote Etch.

The guys did a quick demonstrationto an appreciative crowd giving somecooking tips and advice along the way.I managed to grab a taste of the burntbutter hollandaise at the end and it isdefinitely something I will be giving a goat home.

Over the course of the weekend theyhad a number of demonstrations fromlocal chefs such as Doug McMaster ofSilo, Michael Bremner from 64 degrees,Jai Johnson of Market and IsaacBartlett-Copeland of Isaac At, whichgave the event a bit of local interest.

This was not something that I feltwas carried on throughout the festivalwith many of the food stalls and vendorscoming from far and wide.

The BBQ stands grabbed the attentionof most with their impressive displaysof charred meats and classic side dishessuch as coleslaw and corn. There werealso healthy queues for the sausage, pulled pork and fried chicken stalls asyou would expect.

Not wanting to queue for long Idecided to try some fresh ravioli fromthe Ravi-Ollie stand opting for the pea, mint, ricotta and bacon. The pasta wascooked from frozen which made themslightly more firm than I would haveexpected but the flavour was lovely andfresh. I went for the small which wasokay although felt that for the pricesome garlic bread or something shouldhave been thrown in.

The food prices on the day did seem a

little steep, and my friends were a littleunderwhelmed with a £10 mixed grillbox from one of the barbecue stalls.

After sampling some Germansparkling Riesling and a few visits to thebeer tent my second food stop was a visitto Etch. They had burger, pork belly andprawns to choose from and Brighton Ginor Ridgeview wine to wash it down with.I tucked into my rather tasty burger andtop quality sparkling wine and soakedup the fading afternoon sun.

I spoke to Steven Edwards aboutthe Etch event at Small Batch coffee(which took place on Thursday), andtheir future plans for a very interestingsounding permanent premises for Etchin the coming year.

To keep up to date with developmentsand check out the pop up events both inand around Sussex, visit: www.etchfood.co.uk.

The Foodies Festival has become amainstay on the food calendar in thecity and has its place within the widerfood landscape.

The event was very well attended andfrom what I saw it brought lots of peopletogether to share in a love of food anddrink.

Where it differs from Brighton’sown food festival is that it is clearly acommercial enterprise, and there isnothing wrong with that per se, and sofestival goers should be prepared forthis. As someone who is interested insupporting and experiencing the localfood scene there wasn’t quite enoughthere to keep my interest.

It would have been nice to see a fewmore local businesses representedalongside the chef demonstrations.Luckily we have got the Brighton andHove Food Festival coming up at the endof the month where you can get your fillof local produce and enjoy all the outsideactivities for free.

Y oplait, Muller, and mmmDanone are among thedelights given unto us bythe Ottoman Empire. Well, they brought us yoghurt,so whether it’s a Muller

Corner or an Alpro plant-based yoghurtalternative with wild strawberries anda hint of coconut, it originated in theOttoman Empire. So too did kebabs, moussaka, rice pilaf, kofta, and baklava.

Baklava sounds like balaclava, andwhereas that does appeal greatly to ourinfantile sense of humour, the two aren’teven slightly connected. In the CrimeanWar, there was a battle at the port ofBalaclava in the Crimea. The soldierswore face-coverings which then becameknown as balaclavas. We’d be moreinterested in how they referred to thembefore deciding upon balaclava. “Intothe valley of death rode the six hundred, faces covered up so that only their eyeswere visible, you know, like a sock foryour head”. Yes, Tennyson’s Charge Of TheLight Brigade was about Balaclava. Whoneeds an English Literature degree whenyou’ve got Bakery Bulletin?

Soldiers didn’t cover their faces withbaklava. If they did, not recording thisfact is regrettable, as the paintings wouldhave been awesome. Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry filled with chopped nutsand sweetened with honey. The pastryis layers of phyllo dough (that’s filo to us).Phyllo is Greek for leaf. Not to be confusedwith Philo, who was a Hellenistic Jewishphilosopher. Or Philippa. That’s me.Philippa is Greek for “lover of horses”.Whatever - it’s all Greek to me.

There are three theories of the origin ofbaklava - Central Asian Turkic flatbreads,Roman Placenta Cake (no, obviously not- it’s from the Greek plakountos whichmeans flatbreads), and Persian Lauzinaq(no idea but our money’s on flatbreads).Rumour has it that in the TopkapiPalace in Istanbul (which would havebeen Constantinople), Ottoman sultansserved trays of baklava to Janissaries(elite infantry, like the SAS but withoutRoss Kemp) every 15th of the month ofRamadan (you should know what that is,and if you don’t, you should pretend youdo).

Every nation has its own method ofpreparation. There’s a Persian version, and an Azerbaijan adaptation. It’s beenredefined in Palestine, and there’s aGreek technique. The Romans, however, wrote a recipe. Cato the Elder was aRoman Senator and historian. In 160BC,he documented his recipe for baklava. He was also the first person to writehistory in Latin. As Mark Twain oncesaid, “history does not repeat itself, butit does rhyme”. Cato might have inventedbaklava, but finding proof has become apalaver.

IN BRIEFPablo’s proud despite moreHawks play-off heartbreakWhitehawk Football Clubboss Pablo Asensio wasproud of his players despitesuffering National South play-off semi-final heartbreak atEbbsfleet United on Sunday.

Hawks, who were trailing2-1 following the home leg, produced a fine display andstrikes from Nathan Arnoldand Danny Mills ensuredthey won the second-leg 2-1 tosend the tie to extra-time.

After no more goals in theadditional 30 minutes, thegame went to penalties andEbbsfleet keeper NathanAshmore’s heroics helped hisside book their place in thefinal with a 3-2 win on spot-kicks.

Ebbsfleet will now hostMaidstone in the NationalSouth play-off final onSaturday, with a 3pm kick-offat Stonebridge Park.

It was the secondsuccessive year Hawks hadsuffered play-off pain afterthey lost in last year’s final.

Despite the defeat,Whitehawk manager Asensiofelt his side were more thana match for a much moreexperienced Ebbsfleetside.

He said: “It’s never nice tolose on penalties but over thetwo legs there was not muchin it.

“We went into the game 2-1down, then managed to sendit to extra-time and penalties.

“That showed how close

and evenly matched theteams were but it’s a shame tolose out. We so nearly edgedit in normal time with SergioTorres hitting the bar but itwasn’t to be.”

Asensio admitted the losshurt but he still wants to bethe man to lead Hawks intothe National League.

He is set to meet withthe Whitehawk directorsthis week and hopes he canmount a promotion push.

He said: “Losing onpenalties always hurts but Ibelieved in this team all theway through.

“When I took over it was amess, the changing room wasa tough place to be. Peoplewere talking about relegationbut I didn’t see that and wassaying we could make theplay-offs.

“We achieved that in theend and were a little unluckynot to reach the final.

“Hopefully,I’llhavepositivetalks with the directors thenbe the man to lead this teamnext season.

“Promotion would be theaim but going well in the FACup again is important, as Ibelieve that is the best cupcompetition in the world.”

England trainingcamp in BrightonEngland’s rugby union squadwill take part in a three-daytraining camp at BrightonCollege next week.

Head coach Eddie Joneshas named a 26-man squadwho will train in Brightonfrom Tuesday to Thursday.

He said: “The Brightontraining camp is a goodopportunity for England toget together and train hardahead of the Wales game andsummer tour.

“While we will be withoutthose players involved inthe Premiership semi-finalsit’s crucial that we spendas much time together aspossible.

“We have an importantgame at Twickenham at theend of the month and then achallenging tour to Australia. It’s a challenge that reallyexcites us and we’re lookingforward to starting ourpreparation.

“Tour places are still up forgrabs and I expect the playersin this camp, as well as thoseinvolved in the play-offs, tocontinue to make their casefor selection.”

Mark Davis believes Sussexare heading in the rightdirection despite twofrustrating rain-hit days atDerby this week.

After Ed Joyce’s career-best 250 – an innings thehead coach described as“unbelievable” – and a firstcentury of the season fromLuke Wells following hispromotion to No.3, Sussexwere well placed to claim theirfirst Championship win of theseason.

But just 26.3 overs werepossible on the last twodays leaving the seconddivision title favourites stillwaiting for their first winin the Specsavers CountyChampionship, ahead of

this weekend’s meeting withthe other relegated county,Worcestershire, at New Road.

As well as the form ofJoyce and Wells, Davis wasimpressed with his bowlers, with Stuart Whittinghamtaking three wickets on debutand bowling aggressivelywhile Lewis Hatchett, whoappears to have put an injury-plagued 12 months behindhim, returned with 5 for 58.

“There have been lotsof positives despite theweather,” said Davis. “Edbatted unbelievably andovershadowed Luke’s inningsa little bit, but Luke playedjust as well because therewas always something in thewicket for the bowlers.”

Davis reiterated in pre-season that consistentperformances in the seconds

were the only route into thefirst team for young playersat Hove and Whittinghamand all-rounder Harry Finchresponded with early-seasonwickets and runs.

“Stuart has always beenquick but physically he’s filledout and is a lot stronger,” saidDavis. “He took six wickets inone game and four in anotherfor the seconds and got hischance as a result. WithGeorge Garton too, it’s excitingto see good young Sussex fastbowlers coming through. Thesenior pros are great with theyoungsters as well. They givethem advice but they don’t puttoo much stress on them.”

Captain marvel Greer doesn’t fearpromotion through play-off routeAlbion captain Gordon Greerbelieves the squad’s teamspirit will stand them in goodstead as they head into theplay-offs.

There was disappointmentfor Brighton on Saturdaywhen they missed out on

automatic promotion aftera 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, which saw the Teesside clubpromoted into the PremierLeague as Albion needed towin the promotion shoot-out.

The Seagulls now meetSheffield Wednesday in theChampionship play-offs, withthe first leg at Hillsboroughtonight, before the second legtakes place at the Amex onMonday.

Greer said: “We’ve got afantastic team spirit hereand we really do believe thatwe can achieve it. Obviouslythere was disappointmentafter Saturday’s game againstMiddlesbrough but we gottogether on Saturday evening, got it out of our system, had achat about the game and wemoved on.

“After that, we’ve just beenfocused on Sheffield.

“We’ve got a greatopportunity now in front ofus. We’re in the play-offs andwe’ve got an opportunity toget to the Premier League, soit’s exciting times.

“There’s loads of confidenceand belief within the squad,it’s taking the things we’vedone this season into the nextcouple of games and hopefullywe can do the business.”

Greer feels Albion are ready

for the Premier League andon what leading the club intothe top flight would mean, hesaid: “It would be my proudestmoment in a Brighton & HoveAlbion shirt. It’s the aim ofthe club to get to the PremierLeague, the infrastructure

here is fantastic, with thetraining ground, the stadium, all the staff and the players. It’s just about us trying toget it right on the park andhopefully we can do it.”

Looking ahead to the tieswith the Owls, Greer said:“I’m sure both games will bereally enjoyable and hopefullywe can put on some goodperformances and, if we dothat, I’m sure we’ll get theright result.

“We’ve showed all seasonwhat we’ve got quality-wise,we’ve been tight at the backand have some real goodattacking players. It’s up to usover the course of the two legsto keep it tight and hopefullythe boys in the attacking thirdwill do their jobs and score afew goals.”

Unbeaten run continuesStephens heads leveller at Boro

We’ve still got a greatopportunity – HughtonAlbion boss Chris Hughtonbelieves his squad will usethe disappointment ofmissing out on promotionat Middlesbrough to theirbenefit in their play-off tieswith Sheffield Wednesday.

The Seagulls travel toHillsborough for the first legof the Championship play-offs tonight, before they hostthe Owls in the return leg onMonday.

A 1-1 draw on Saturdaysaw Boro clinch the secondautomatic promotion spotbehind Burnley, when Albionneeded all three points toleapfrog the Teeside club.

Hughton said: “They area very spirited group of ladsand the disappointment thatthey showed after the gameon Saturday shows how closewe’ve come, how motivatedthey are and, probably, it’s agood thing.

“We came very closeand the players were fairlydistraught after the game butthat’s something they will use

to their benefit.” Hughtondoes not feel any team hasan advantage going into theplay-offs and said: “When yougo into the play-offs, I almostdon’t think there are anyfavourites. It’s a very toughcall between all four teams.

“We have a greatopportunity now, as do theother three teams. The onlyway you can guarantee gettingto a final is to make sure youget the correct results in thenext two games.”

Hughton admitted hisdisappointment that theclub’s appeal against DaleStephens’ red card at Borowas not upheld and said:“We’re very disappointed– everybody I have spokento saw a competitive playergoing for the ball, winningthe ball in full control ofhis actions and perfectlybalanced.

“I find it astonishing thatwe have a system in placethat sees somebody in thatposition receive a three-game ban, the exact same assomebody would have got ifwe saw a reckless red card,a two-footed challenge withboth feet off the floor.”

S o, it’s the play-offs for the third timein four seasons. It’s been a struggle forsome Albion fans to lift themselves forthem after the disappointment andcontroversy of Saturday.

The worst thing since the 1-1 drawhas been the what ifs and maybes. As I’ve said tonumerous people since, it would have been easier totake had Middlesbrough scored a last-minute goal todeny Brighton promotion.

The controversy of Dale Stephens’ red card justleaves you wondering what might have been. TheSeagulls were in the ascendancy and, arguably,Stephens was the best player on the pitch.

Albion might still have drawn if Stephens hadremained on the pitch, they might have even lost thegame but they also could have won and now be inthe Premier League.

In my opinion, Stephens clearly wins the ball andGaston Ramirez is slow to the tackle, which resultsin his leg catching the Albion midfielder’s studs, rather than the other way round. The fact Albionalso lost the appeal to the FA against the red cardmakes it an even more bitter pill to swallow.

However, this is still a great chance for Albion toget into the Premier League. Sheffield Wednesdaylie in wait in the semi-finals, before a potential play-off final at Wembley against Derby or Hull. Whatbetter way to win promotion than in front of 40,000Seagulls fans on May 28?

The what ifsand maybes arehardest to take

After the disappointmentof missing out on automaticpromotion, Brighton willneed to pick themselves upfor what is set to be a toughdouble-header with SheffieldWednesday in the play-offsemi-finals.

Albion take on CarlosCarvalhal’s side atHillsborough this eveningand play the return leg atthe Amex on Monday. Thewinner will head to Wembleyto take on Hull or Derby forthe right to join Burnleyand Middlesbrough in thePremier League next season.

Albion aiming for Wembleyas they head into play-offsWednesday v Albion preview While they now have to

move on from last weekend’s1-1 draw with Boro, Seagullsfans will no doubt feelaggrieved that they will haveto take on the Owls withoutDale Stephens. The 26-yearold has only missed one gameall season, and will not play apart in Albion’s play-off runafter his three-match ban– for what many think wasa harsh straight red card atthe Riverside Stadium – wasupheld by the FA.

Stephens will be a bigmiss in the middle of thepark for their trip to SouthYorkshire in what will be atight encounter. Both games

between the sides ended in0-0 draws and Brighton havenever won in league or cupcompetitions at Hillsborough.

The Owls will go in asunderdogs, however haveproven their ability tofrustrate the top sides in theChampionship throughoutthe season. Striker FernandoForestieri is likely to providetheir greatest threat with 15goals to his name, and tonightgoes up against an Albiondefence without Lewis Dunk, however the 24-year old couldreturn from his two-matchsuspension on Monday.

W as anyone reallyexpecting anythingfrom Saturday? Imean really...?

Put it this way...For all the

collective down-ness there is on thisresult (as if one result determines aseason), I had no expectation of us doingthe business at Middlesbrough. I hadhope, of course I did, and I believedthe team had enough about it to havesneaked a result. We couldn’t, but it wasclose.

Additionally, I am intensely andimmensely proud of what the club andthe team have achieved this season.I was utterly over the moon that we’ddone well enough to go into the lastgame of the season with a chance– and a really good one at that – ofautomatic promotion. OF AUTOMATICPROMOTION.

Stop and consider that for a second. We have not had such a sustained

and exciting challenge to get to the topdivision for 37 years. There have beenseveral club records broken en route(including fewest defeats in a seasonever, fewest away defeats ever, plusmost goals scored, most points won, andmost matches won in the second tier). It has been for the most part absolutelybrilliant. The contention that we’vearguably over-achieved is beside thepoint.

All I would say is I’d have beendisappointed if we’d not got over the linehaving got this far and fallen against alower team. But we still had a pig of afixture to fulfil. Too bad, that’s the waythe cookie crumbles.

So how down was I? For an houror so, though mostly about Stephens’dismissal, and then again after the FAdecided on Tuesday that winning theball cleanly and being kicked for yourtroubles is a red card offence. After that, there’s no value in wallowing in misery– it’s only destructive and hinders ourcause.

For crying out loud, it’s only SheffieldWednesday we’re playing; a team not

capable of getting closer than 15 pointsto us. History – the fact we’ve not wonat Hillsborough before – counts fornothing. This is about now. Therefore, Iwait in quiet contemplation, for Fridayand for Monday, knowing the playersand management of Brighton & HoveAlbion are professional and willingenough to do it all again. It’s within ourhands. Everything else is merely whitenoise.

So for anyone to grumble about thisso-called failure is a bit self-indulgent.We have to earn the right to bepromoted, and we haven’t done so yet.And we – the fans – have our obligationto do our bit. We’ve done our best(sometimes), but now we have to do itagain. So... we go again.

I t has certainly been a toughweek or so for those involvedin and those who supportBrighton & Hove Albion.

The disappointmentof Saturday’s draw at

Middlesbrough was compounded bythe news that Dale Stephens will misswhat his manager has described as thebiggest two and possibly three games ofhis career.

Stephens will no doubt be a loss butChris Hughton will hope his squadcan cope, with the experienced SteveSidwell available to replace him.

The pressure is on for all clubsinvolved in the play-offs but with therelegated sides from the PremierLeague now confirmed, it will be aneven harder task next year for thosewho miss out.

Another potential problem for clubsthat remain in the Championship is apossible raid on their players. Albion’ssuccess this season and their third-placed finish will no doubt have beenpicked up on the radar by others.

Some of the Seagulls squad arealready tracked by top-flight outfits.Inevitably players come and go fromany club but Stephens has been key thisseason. I was mildly surprised he didn’tfeature in the top three nominationsfor player of the year but that maybe because he quietly goes about

his business.Lewis Dunk has had admirers for

some time. Beram Kayal and AnthonyKnockaert have also caught the eye thisseason.

The management and owners atthe Albion won’t be able to sit downand talk contracts or extensions to thecurrent deals until their fate is decided,be it May 16 or 28.

Of course, the club know whothey want to keep but the bids frompredators are as yet unknown. However, would the individuals want to go? Theclub is in a good position and many ofthe squad appear happy on and alsoimportantly off the pitch.

Changes will happen no matterwhat division the Seagulls are playingin next season. The battle to build andrestructure is a constant one.

Tough decisions will have to be madebut Chris Hughton has the experienceto cope. He, and the recruitment team, have constructed this squad so there’sno reason why they can’t do it againfor the Championship if required, orstrengthen for the Premier League.
