Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Information for Parents and Carers
2
Overview
Students attending North Lakes State College will bring their own portable computing device to the College as a tool to enhance curriculum delivery; for online research, work production, creation and submission. Connection to the internet will be provided via the College Wi-Fi network.
The College has negotiated with a number of computer vendors to provide online access to secure ordering portals where pre-approved devices that meet the minimum specifications can be purchased. We are aware however that families may already have a number of devices at home which may be suitable as long as they meet or exceed the minimum required specifications outlined in this document.
Note: Students already enrolled in the current BYOD program will be able to seamlessly join next year’s BYOD program with their current device. No changes to their setting will be required.
Portals
The portals have been set up with devices and accessories that meet the BYOD minimum specifications, and will help to take the uncertainty out of purchasing a device for use at school. Also available through these portals are warranties and Accidental Damage Protection plans where in most cases, the College can act as a service site (i.e. the devices can be logged with the vendors and dropped off at the College IT department for the vendors to repair on-site). Note: While the College has been able to negotiate with the vendors to set up the portals, North Lakes State College is not involved in any transactions, all transactions (including accidental damage and warranties) are between the parent and the vendor.
Several of our portal vendors also offer financing or instalment payment options that may be of interest to parents considering this option.
General Information
Further to the specifications outlined below for each year level, there are some further specifications to note that apply to any device entering the College.
1. Ensure the battery holds sufficient charge to operate throughout the school day (6 hours).
2. If this device is shared with others in the family, you will need to ensure that any existing content is school appropriate and will not compromise the educational use of the device.
3. Devices that meet the minimum specifications below should connect with no troubles to the College network. However there are other systems and online resources used by the College the device may need to work with including the online resources such as The Learning Place. There is no need to purchase software for this purpose as any required software is freely available online. For a full list of what software may be required, see the curriculum handbooks for the year level / subject.
4. Protective equipment such as bags or cases must be considered to keep these devices safe whilst at school. It is the responsibility of students to look after their devices while at school and to keep them in bags when not in use.
5. Please note that Smart phones are not considered an appropriate device for use with the BYOD, as the smaller screen does not meet the minimum specifications and also as a potential distraction from learning in the classroom. Likewise, ChromeBooks will not be supported due to incompatibility issues.
Minimum, Medium and Recommended\High Specifications
This year the College has implemented several changes to the specifications for devices suitable for use as part of our BYOD Program. These changes will assist you when purchasing a device outside the Portals available through the College website, or when deciding if a device you already own will be suitable.
These include the addition of non-iPad devices in the tablet category and adding a Medium and High category to the laptop specifications for years 4 to 7 and 7 to 12. While a laptop that may meet the minimum specifications will be suitable for the majority of year levels and subjects in years 4 to 12, some subjects (such as ICT, CADD and some Arts subjects) do require higher spec devices. These specifications can be found in the ‘High’ section and are based on the required specifications of the products used in these classes (i.e. AutoDesk, Adobe Creative Cloud).
Fees associated to BYOD
The annual fee for the BYOD is $25.00 per year and is payable once a signed copy of the ‘Responsible Use agreement’ is returned to the school. Students can access the BYOD on up to 3 devices (Excludes Smart phones).
Students can also purchase a license for Adobe Creative Cloud Suite – Master Collection (Design, Web & Video) – for courses that require this for a yearly fee of $25.00, for use whilst enrolled at the college.
