Message From Leadership

Dennis Haas, President/CEO Steve Pattison, Board Chair

Dear Friends,

On behalf of everyone at ARC Broward, we would like to thank you for your support. What started out in 1956 as two small classrooms for children with special needs now serves more than 1,200 adults and children with autism, intellectual disabilities and various other disadvantages; employs over 400 health care, educational and other professionals; and operates three mission-based enterprises. We hope you will take a close look at the following pages, which provide highlights of our accomplishments during 2011 and the impact that funds we have received made in the lives of so many. They are just a few examples of the meaningful impact we are having on the lives of so many people in need in our community.

As we reflect on 2011, we rejoice in the success of our programs and the increase we have experienced in individual and corporate support. But we also must face the reality of the challenges arising daily by continuous decline in government funding for a segment of our community in great need yet amazing potential. We are confident that with your continued support and the growth of our mission-based enterprises, ARC Broward will continue to rise to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

Sincerely,

Barbara Hunt, an ARC Broward Teacher’s Assistant, shares a laughing moment with Angelo, as they play on the preschool playground.

Kamp Krayola is a weekday summer camp for children and young adults ages 3-21 who have a developmental disability and moderate to severe behavioral challenges.

Developmental Preschool is a full-time, weekday educational program that supports children ages 18 months through 5 years old with classroom teams headed by Florida State Certified Teachers as well as licensed Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech/Language Therapists.

Services are primarily provided in the family home and are based on a national best practice model.

ARC Broward offers a broad range of quality services to meet the needs of children and adults with disabilities as well as for those with various other life challenges. Our programs achieved impressive outcomes and stellar reports from those served as well as from other stakeholders.

Since 2006, the ARC Broward Culinary Institute has provided job training and life skills training to disadvantaged men and women in our local community. The Culinary Institute’s post secondary, entry level culinary arts program combines intensive, hands-on food service training with classroom instruction and life skills classes to prepare students for employment and self-sufficiency. ARC Broward staff work with students individually, moving them towards a successful transition into the local workforce, enabling them to create a new life for themselves and their families.

Beyond the 16-week program, ARC Broward provides graduate support services for the better part of a year and sometimes longer, helping graduates navigate their workplace, upgrade their housing, and move toward financial stability and a sustainable future.

Kyle entered the Entry Level Culinary Arts Certificate Program in August of 2011. Kyle’s speed and accuracy in the kitchen improved dramatically in two months. As a result, he was selected on several occasions to be one of our go-to students for catering events.

CULINARY INSTITUTE BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS FY 2011

In addition to being the touchstone of our operation, the Culinary Institute prepares nutritious and healthy meals which serve as a valuable hands-on training opportunity for our students. During 2011, the ARC Broward Culinary Institute prepared 65,840 meals to contracted schools, residential programs and adult day care programs.

The ARC Broward Culinary Institute operates a catering business which allows students the experience preparing elegant, gourmet, and personalized cuisine, diversifying their training and skills, and widening the scope of their job possibilities. In February 2011, the ARC Broward Culinary Institute was designated the official banquet and catering team of the beautiful Sunrise Civic Center Grand Ballroom facilities. The new Sunrise Civic Center partnership provides an exclusive setting to match the Culinary Institute’s skilled banquet experience, enabling us to host events in a venue that rivals any other.

ARC Broward administers the statewide marketing of the Florida “Support Autism Programs” specialty license plate. ARC Broward also receives a portion of the extra $25 specialty license plate fee for each plate sold. Remaining funds are distributed through a grant process to programs around the State.

The Florida Autism License Plates generate awareness about autism. They also generate funds for much needed services throughout Florida. Every plate is a rolling billboard opportunity. Community awareness is a critical component of the challenge!

As of the close of 2011, 4,070 plates had been sold.
