• Bristol is a city situated between Gloucestershire and Somerset with the River Avon running through it.

• There are nearly half a million people living in Bristol.

• Some sights of interest include Brunel’s Suspension Bridge, @Bristol (a hands-on science museum), Bristol zoo and the Arlfofini.

History of Bristol- The Slave Trade

Because of its place on the River, Bristol was involved in the Slave Trade between 1730 and 1745 as the main port.

The ships that carried the slaves arrived in Bristol, and then, the slaves were sent of to different parts of Britain.

Edward Colston was born on 2nd November 1636 and was one of 15 children.

Edward built a big business in 1672, trading with Spain, Portugal, Italy and Africa.

He is viewed as an inspirational figure due to his donations of money to schools and other causes. His name is used in landmarks such as Colston Hall and Colston Girl’s School.

Isambard Kingdom BrunelIsambard Kingdom Brunel was born on 9th

April 1806 and was an English mechanical and civil engineer.

He built bridges, dockyards, steam-ships and tunnels.

His designs revolutionised public transport and modern engineering.

Some of his most well- known inventions are the Suspension Bridge , the Great Western Railway and the SS. Great Britain.

Bristol- at presentBristol is a very busy place with many things to do and

see.The hippodrome is a big theatre in the centre of Bristol. It puts on amazing shows from the West End and Broadway. The theatre was designed by Frank Matcham and opened on 16th December 1912

Bristol Cathedral is a Cathedral located on College Green. It was founded in 1140 by Robert Fitzharding. The Cathedral has many unique architecture and a historic organ.

Bristol- at presentThere is a variety of shopping centres in Bristol where you can buy everything you need!

The mall in Cribbs Causeway is a huge shopping centre with different kinds of shops inside. It was designed and built in the 20th Century.

Cabot Circus is another big shopping centre in the centre of Bristol. There is always some sort of event/ activity going on in the main area. It was built in 2008.

Bristol Damien Hirst is an English artist. He was born in 1965 in Bristol. He is

Britain’s richest living artist, with his wealth valued at £215m.

Lee Evans is an English stand-up comedian, writer and actor. He was born in 1964 in Avonmouth.
