BRITAIN AT WAR - OUR FINEST HOURS DISC ONE - D-DAY - ASSAULT ON FORTRESS EUROPE

Early in the morning of 6th June 1944, a vast and bizarre armada ploughed steadily against stiff head-winds through the rough waters of the English Channel, heading for the Normandy coast. Amongst the 5,000 vessels were many of the best British and American warships of stupendous collective firepower, as well as ancient battleships and tankers on their last voyage, destined to be sunk to provide breakwaters. Thousands of the craft had been built to make one short journey only; to ferry the invading allied forces, together with

their immense diversity of equipment on the last difficult, dangerous stretch from the transports to the shore of enemy-occupied France. It was D-Day.

DISC TWO - BATTLE OF BRITAIN - THE FIGHT FOR THE SKY With the surrender of France on 22nd of June 1940, Britain and her Commonwealth stood alone against the might of the German armed forces. In that dark summer of 1940, the threat of invasion hung heavily over Britain and children were once more evacuated

to the countryside. The army was still recovering from its defeats in France and could offer no real defence against invasion. Britain had a strategy to meet the German threat, which was due to one man, Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding. Against enormous internal pressure, Dowding had resisted committing the majority of his Spitfire and Hurricane squadrons to the battle on the Continent, knowing that the major battle was yet to come - the battle for Britain itself.

DISC THREE - DUNKIRK - BATTLE FOR FRANCE “So long as the English tongue survives, the word ‘Dunkerque’ will be spoken with reverence”... The glowing language with which the New York Times greeted the extraordinary rescue of the beleaguered British Expeditionary Force from otherwise certain defeat and captivity on the continent, was in many ways typical of the time. In Britain, despite Churchill’s stern reminder that “wars are not won by evacuations”, a tangle of myths quickly sprung up around Dunkirk, which came to be regarded almost as a major victory. A major victory it certainly was not. Dunkirk was a brilliantly executed withdrawal of land forces - minus all their equipment - across the Channel, following a series of unparalleled military disasters. Indeed, to the Germans, Dunkirk was virtually a sideshow. Intent on completing

the conquest of France, they no longer regarded the small British army as posing any significant threat.

mands, the overseas Theatre Of War and Reconnaissance and Transport.

BRITAIN AT WAR - DEFENDING THE EMPIRE

DISC ONE - THE BOER WAR When Britain went to war against the Boers in October 1899, the British public expected the fighting to be over by Christmas. As it turned out, The Boer War, in Kipling’s famous phrase, gave the British “no end of a lesson”. Using accounts of the soldiers

who fought in this bitter and bloody clash of arms and remarkable contemporary photographs, this programme tells the story of Britain’s last great Imperial war.

DISC TWO - THE GREAT WAR - THE STORY OF WW1 1914-1918 These new and updated visual accounts of the first world war combine a rivetting story line with much newly gathered information and truly devastating pictures of the eerie landscape of war on the grandest scale. It is a compelling exploration of warfare at

its most horrific.

DISC THREE - THE HISTORY OF WORLD WAR TWO Britain’s response to Germany’s Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland, in 1939, was the British Expeditionary Force, sent to Europe to prevent the Germans following their successful airborne invasion of the Low Countries, with an armoured assault against France.

The BEF’s enforced, heroic withdrawal at Dunkirk left the RAF, under Sir Hugh Dowding, to win the Battle Of Britain and postpone invasion plans indefinitely. As World War Two entered its second, decisive phase, the British Army showed its teeth at El Alamein where Montgomery’s victory halted Rommel’s armoured sweep through North Africa. Further East, Hitler’s attack on the Soviet Union proved suicidal: German surrender at Stalingrad left Russia poised to punch into the heart of the Reich. In the Far East, Japan followed their pre-emptive strike at Pearl Harbour with rapid territorial gains before being pushed back from Midway by American naval might. In Europe, RAF Bomber Command blitzed German cities as the D-Day invasion of Normandy was taking

shape. By April 1945, American and Russian forces had Berlin surrounded - the liberation of Europe was complete. These momentous events are portrayed through front-line film footage and carefully researched contemporary accounts.

of Britain and the savage Blitz... the duels in the Desert and the Atlantic... the invasion of Russia, the assault on Pearl Harbour... the battles of Stalingrad, Kursk, Monte Cassino... the 1,000 bomber raids on Germany, the battles for the

Pacific... the D-Day landings and the push to the Rhine, the reversals at Arnhem and the Ardennes... the fall of Berlin, the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps... and the awesome finale of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

BRITISH FIGHTER AIRCRAFT OF WORLD WAR II DISC ONE - THE STORY OF THE SPITFIRE

With the courage and skill of fighter aces like Johnnie Johnson, ‘Sailor’ Malan and Bobby Tuck, the Supermarine Spitfire helped change the course of the war in favour of the Allies. The only match for the Luftwaffe’s Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Spitfire played a major role in the success of the Battle of Britain. The classic combination of airframe, Rolls Royce Merlin engine and dual cannon/machine gun armament struck terror into the hearts of the enemy’s most fearless flyers and won the

aircraft a place in history as a timeless thoroughbred fighter. The Spitfire fought in the front line throughout the war, and rightly remains an aviation legend today. Combining dramatic wartime film with colour footage of surviving Spitfires in flight, this is the definitive documentary of the Supermarine Spitfire.

DISC TWO - THE STORY OF THE HURRICANE Its eight wing-mounted Colt-Brownings spitting flame, the Hawker Hurricane swooped to dispatch over two-thirds of all enemy aircraft destroyed in the Battle of Britain. Courageous Squadron Commander Douglas Bader, 14 - kill hero ‘Cobber Kain’,

Ginger Lacey - the top Battle of Britain ace with 18 victims - and many other RAF pilots owed their reputations and their lives to this toughest mount of all. The Hurricane was outnumbered but never outclassed, designed to hit the enemy hard, absorb tremendous punishment yet live to fight another day. Featuring colour footage of the last surviving aircraft, alongside original combat film, this is an exceptional programme of a fighter plane that truly changed the course of history.

DISC THREE - DE HAVILLAND MOSQUITO In 1941 the RAF was being pressed to fill new and ever more demanding roles in the war against Hitler. Although first-class modern fighters - Hurricanes and Spitfires - were in abundant supply, the Air Chiefs had a serious problem with the bomber

force. This uncomfortable gap was filled by a revolutionary fighter bomber, one of the most original and versatile designs of the entire war - the De Havilland Mosquito.

AIR SHOW GREATS - MASTERS OF THE AIR

DISC ONE - THE RED ARROWS - 5 SPECTACULAR YEARS Here is a true celebration of 25 years spectacular achievement. The whole world knows the Royal Air Force’s amazing aerobatic team, the Red Arrows. Now you are in the cockpit, hearing the leader’s every command and sharing in every

exciting manoeuvre. The cameras of veteran aerial photographer Arthur Gibson are your guide, first sky-high with the “Gnats”, the Red Arrows’ saucy little jet, and then in the powerful new generation “Hawks” flying today. Raymond Baxter introduces you to the team leaders, aviator legends themselves, from Lee Jones in 1965 to modern pilots such as Tom Miller. Now you have a lasting memento of the more than 2,000 daring intricate displays the team has performed

before millions in 42 countries, and of the consummate skill of its pilots.

DISC TWO - FARNBOROUGH - THE GOLDEN YEARS 1949-1959 From the archives of the famous Imperial War Museum comes a treasured look at history in the making - Farnborough, Britain’s greatest air show. Witness the show from 1949 through to 1959 recorded on newsreels shown in the cinemas of the day. What an exciting decade it was, with the accomplishment of technological genius giving birth to innovation we now take for granted. Observe the dangers - the daring test pilots, ever willing to overcome the seemingly impossible

and the bravery which cost the life of famed John Derry at Farnborough ’52. Enjoy the Black Arrows (the forerunners of the Red Arrows) as they demonstrate the very meaning of precision during their giant aerobatics display.

DISC THREE - THE CONCORDE STORY This programme chronicles the remarkable history of Concorde’s development. The years of painstaking research at the frontiers of technology and design and the aircraft itself, one of the most elegant and graceful ever to sail the skies, is

assessed in detail illustrating “the Concorde Experience” which for thousands of travellers remains the ultimate in air travel.

WORLD WAR TWO - HORRORS OF WAR DISC ONE - KAMIKAZE

Named after the “divine wind” which had twice intervened to prevent invasion by the armies of Kublai Kahn in the 13th Century, the Kamikaze pilots symbolised the extreme lengths the Japanese Imperial forces were prepared to go to when faced with defeat. Opposed by the might of the American fleet, rebuilt after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbour, the Imperial seal of approval was given to suicide air attacks on the enemy stalking them in the Pacific. Honoured for its purity, suicide was shrouded in ceremony and mysticism, capturing the

Samurai spirit. It took several military forms when Japan withdrew from the League of Nations after occupying Manchuria in 1931. Ramming techniques were perfected alongside the development of human bombs, bullets and torpedoes, as the suicide tactics struck terror into the hearts of men trying to survive - by men wishing to die.

DISC TWO - GESTAPO - HITLER’S SECRET POLICE The very name of Hitler’s secret police has become synonymous with the rule of terror that, under Heinrich Himmler, first maintained and then extended the Fuhrer’s iron grip on Germany and its people. Waging relentless war on political dissidents, disaffected citizens and

religious minorities alike, the Gestapo’s tactics of torture, interrogation and summary execution bolstered Hitler’s crumbling regime to the last and established a reputation for brutality and oppression that would endure long after the last Gestapo commandant met his fate at the gallows.

DISC THREE - HITLER’S SECRET WEAPONS As the Second World War progressed, the race for scientific intelligence, secrecy and detection brought a new dimension to warfare. The pilot-less flying bomb, or V1, emerged as the first of Hitler’s new weapons, and for a brief but terrifying period rained death and destruction

on the south of England until the RAF and anti-aircraft gunners learnt to counter the terrible “Doodlebug”. With Allies closing in from the West and the Eastern Front crumbling, Hitler realised Germany was losing the war and his response was to give top priority to the V2. Pioneered by Werner Von Braun, it was one of the greatest advances in the technology of warfare. Capable of being launched from anywhere, Hitler pinned his hopes on this early rocket, but the V2 had come too late, draining Germany’s resources and ultimately failing to

alter the course of Hitler’s war. Against the background of the famous campaigns which led to his eventual defeat, this DVD shows spectacular archive footage of Hitler’s secret armoury as it was being developed, tested and finally used in anger.

IN THE LINE OF FIRE - FAMOUS BATTLES OF WW1 DISC ONE - GALLIPOLI 1915

The story of the ill-fated Allied campaign in the Dardanelles that was supposed to knock Turkey out of World War One. It was the brain-child of Winston Churchill, who convinced Allied High Command that an attack at Gallipoli would also open up vital supply lines to Russia and establish a third front against Austria-Hungary. Gallipoli has become a by-word for the bravery and sacrifice of the ANZACS - the Australian and New Zealand troops who fought and died during the ten month campaign that saw an estimated 36,000 Commonwealth troops

lose their lives before the ignominious Allied withdrawal in January 1916. It was not only Turkish shot and shell at infamous places such as Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay that claimed so many lives, but also those other traditional hidden enemies of the soldier - sickness and disease. “Line Of Fire” harnesses state-of-the-art computer technology to explore and explain the factors which have shaped years of human conflict. This is history with a difference: for the first time we are able to see the great battlefields of the world in a unique “virtual”

environment, providing new insights into military history’s most compelling events. Each powerful episode combines unrivalled graphics with atmospheric recreations to analyse and explore every facet of famous battles.

DISC TWO - THE SOMME 1916 July 1st 1916 was the blackest day in the history of the British Army when a combination of bad planning and German bullets sent Kitchener’s Army to their doom. An army that had taken two years to make took only a day to destroy. Taken from the hugely-popular televi-

sion series ‘Line Of Fire’, this programme harnesses state-of-the-art computer technology to explore, explain and bring new perspectives to the battle which symbolises the suffering of the Great War. Featuring archive footage and specially treated recreations, ‘The Somme’ also includes authoritative comment and analysis by leading military historians from the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

DISC THREE - CAMBRAI 1917 At Cambrai in November 1917, a tank force of over three hundred tanks punched a hole four miles deep into the German lines in the space of a single morning, an advance comparable in size to that made at Passchendale in four months. But the Germans counter-attacked and the result of the battle was a virtual draw, with the front lines shifting slightly. However the battle of Cambrai marked a major turning point in the course of the war - and military history as a whole. The era of trench warfare was coming to an end and technology was

beginning to reign supreme on the battlefields of Europe.

WOMEN AT WAR

DISC ONE - ON THE BATTLEFIELD “On The Battlefield” tells the story of those women who have experienced battle at first hand. Occasionally forced to masquerade as men, they fought in the conflicts which have shaped our world, from the American and English Civil wars, the Napoleonic battles and the two World Wars to Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East. Whether a celebrated historical figure, such as Boudicca, or one of the many unsung fighters on the front line, each

of their sacrifices made them worthy heroines.

DISC TWO - SPIES AND ANGELS The ultimately tragic spy, Mata Hari, was the archetypal “femme fatale”, and the nun-like Florence Nightingale, the selfless field nurse. In “Spies And Angels” we look at both of these iconic women, in addition to such

formidable pioneers as medic Mabel Stobart and nurse Edith Cavell, famously executed during the Second World War for espionage. As technology began to change the world around us, so women’s roles adapted in both medicine and counter-intelligence.

DISC THREE - WORKERS UNITE Since the horrors of tribal assault and massacre, women have carved out an important wartime role, often having to fight their own male establishment as well as the enemy to do so. More recently they have led protests

against war. How successful have women been in destroying the “no job for a woman” labels and how successful have they been in holding onto these roles when the guns fall silent?

FISHING WITH THE EXPERTS DISC ONE - FISHING WITH THE EXPERTS FOR CARP

For many anglers the ultimate fish in British waters is the carp. In only twenty or so years we’ve seen this species capture the imagination of at least a million anglers and the carp have responded to a mass influx of food by just getting bigger and bigger. In 2001 the British Carp Record was over 59lbs… the same fish has been caught again recently and now weighs a staggering 61lbs. How long can this retain the British title? The goal of most fanatical carp anglers is the capture of a 30lbs specimen in British waters, in this programme we will see that other extraordinary species Des Taylor do just that… twice! Des is one of the most entertaining and informative presenters in

today’s angling world and certainly is one of the better journalists. He demonstrates excellently the beauty of simplicity… landing all his fish on the simplest of rigs. Des really knows his stuff and after watching him… hopefully you’ll know his stuff too! In this DVD, Des imparts an abundance of essential information; which if put into practise on the right fishery, will definitely help you to achieve…or even exceed your angling goals. Whether you’re an expert or a novice, there’s something here for everyone. Firstly though, to whet your appetite; see the founding father of modern carping Kevin Maddocks in action at Ringstead Fisheries with a 46lbs fish and his good mate Rob Hales

tackling one of over 30lbs. (Incidentally, keep your eyes peeled for a couple of cracking catfish, caught by fellow anglers during the same session). Enjoy the programme and tight lines!

DISC TWO - FISHING WITH THE EXPERTS FOR PIKE For many years, fishing for pike was considered only as a seasonal option. Not now! When carp and coarse fishermen are waiting anxiously for the arrival of spring, the intrepid angler in need of winter action has a serious predator to consider. In this programme we’re going to join Mick Brown, considered one of the best pike anglers in the UK. Mick explains the tackle he’ll be using and shows us some of his massive array of artificial lures. Firstly he’ll demonstrate his skills in the comparative comfort of the early summer months, landing pike from a secluded estate lake. Deadbaits and exciting lure fishing are the order of the day. With the passing of the seasons, we join Mick on the snow covered banks of a gravel pit in the depths of East Anglia, where we learn the tactics needed to entice pike in pristine condition to take float fished or ledgered deadbaits. Then we’ll move on to the river and during a blizzard...learn from Mick how to catch pike from an anchored boat using the livebait method. To finish off we briefly meet

up with that other extraordinary species Des Taylor, as he successfully hunts for the elusive twenty pounder! Mick Brown and then Des Taylor in the same keep net? What a catch!

DISC THREE - FISHING WITH THE EXPERTS FOR BARBEL Pound for pound the barbel has to be the strongest fighting fish in UK freshwater. It is always a surprise and a pleasure to see the size that this particular species of river fish can grow to and to get a barbel on your line is compelling angling indeed. What better way to learn the necessary skills, than from top all-round angler Des Taylor and his contemporary; none other than the four times World Coarse Angling Champion, Bob Nudd MBE. In this programme we start our barbel fishing education, under the guidance of Des Taylor in the heart of the Worcestershire countryside on the River Teme. Des explains where to look for your quarry, what tackle to use and which baits give you the

best chance of catching the much sought after barbel. We’ll then move on to watch our old friend Bob Nudd MBE as he does battle on the River Wye with not only the fish but also the good old English weather. Never one to be beaten, Bob enthusiastically explains methods and demonstrates that inclement weather conditions can sometimes be the best for successful angling. And for the final stint we’ll return to Des Taylor catching a tremendous scrapper on the magnificent River Severn. BATTLESHIPS OF WORLD WAR TWO DISC ONE - BATTLESHIPS AT WAR

The battleship reigned supreme in naval warfare from the start of this century to 1945 and, though only the Dardanelles and Jutland provided action in World War I, German rearmament ensured the heavily armed queen of the seas would play a major part in the second conflict. The Royal Navy won early successes: the mighty Graf Spee was scuttled off South America, while half of Raeder’s fleet was destroyed at Narvik. U-Boats and air power posed a real threat to battleship superiority, as proved by British torpedo bombers at Taranto. Admiral Cunningham’s fleet, led by HMS Warspite, ensured the Royal Navy’s mastery of the Mediterranean, crushing Italy at Cape Matapan. Battleships later played a leading role in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and the D-Day landings as floating weapons platforms pounding shore-based enemy positions. The US Navy proved all-powerful in the Pacific, Leyte Gulf leaving the Japanese with only one surviving battleship. Fittingly, the final act of the war took place on USS Missouri as Japan signed the surrender. The Allies had secured ultimate

victory - a triumph in which the battleship had played its part.

DISC TWO - GREAT GERMAN BATTLESHIPS OF WORLD WAR TWO This fascinating DVD, using archive footage, stills and interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seamen, concentrates on the exploits of the famous Bismarck. This is followed by an in-depth portrait of the mightiest and most famous German warships of World War

Two, including the big sea battles they encountered.

DISC THREE - KRIEGSMARINE Adolf Hitler had promised his naval commanders that there would be no war in Europe before 1942. Accordingly, plans were laid for the best naval force in the world, but when Hitler precipitated the Second World War in 1939, only a fraction of the necessary ships and submarines were ready. At the outbreak of war Germany did not even possess a single aircraft carrier. The battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz fought famous actions at sea, but the Kriegsmarine was always on the back foot, crippled by superior opponents and strangled by bureaucratic neglect at home. This DVD features rare footage from the British and German archives of the men and ships of the Kriegsmarine in its brief heyday plus innovative maps and graphics, and new footage of the last resting place of the Tirpitz. It also includes

computer animation and military analysis from Dr. Simon Trew and Tim Bean of The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

NARROWBOATS - LIFE ON THE WATERWAYS DISC ONE - WORKING ON THE CANALS

For a brief spell in history “canal mania” swept the land, but when the railways came steaming over the horizon, the canals were abandoned in favour of speed. Yet the canals survived on a reduced scale, and necessity proved to be the mother of invention. With reduced wages the boatmen were forced to take their families with them to live aboard the narrowboats, and a community of working canal folk took to the water. Follow this fascinating journey to discover what it was really like to work on the waterways of Britain. From the men who dug the canals and the great engineers responsible for their construction, through to the strong and resourceful boatmen, find out how they all played their part in keeping the wheels of the Industrial Revolution turning. In more recent years the canals have regained their popularity, but this time with holidays afloat. An entire leisure and tourism industry has developed that has ensured the restoration and conservation of the waterways for

everyone to enjoy, bringing a whole new meaning to the term “Working on the Canals”.

DISC TWO - LIVING ON THE CANALS When it comes to the old traditional ways of life, there are few examples that are compatible with the day-to-day living of the 21st Century. However, there is an exception, where ancient practices go hand-in-hand with all the advantages of modern technology and for the thousands of people in Britain today who live aboard

narrowboats on the nation’s inland waterways, there is nothing to compare with the delights of a life afloat. Join this journey of discovery on the canals and rivers of Great Britain to enter an almost secret world that despite being so firmly rooted in the past is definitely set fair for the future. Packed with information for would-be “Liveaboards”, covering everything from costs and legal requirements through to the type of craft available, there’s also plenty of opportunity to take to the water and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the British countryside. Whether you dream of living

on a narrowboat or have simply wondered what it would be like to continuously cruise the waterways, this programme has something for everyone, offering an up-close and personal view of a very different way of life.

DISC THREE - HOLIDAYING ON THE CANALS When James Brindley designed and built his first canal in the 1760s to transport coal to Manchester, had someone told him that in the 21st Century people from all over the world would be taking their holidays on his “Stinking Ditches” as his critics dubbed the canals, it’s fair to say the brilliant young engineer would have laughed out loud! But this is precisely what has happened and today the British inland waterways are becoming an ever more popular holiday destination, as narrowboats transport visitors back in time, to experience a slower pace of life, while travelling through an unspoiled country landscape. Travel into the heart of Britain’s waterways and see for yourself why narrowboat holidays have enjoyed such a revival, as the stressed and strained from every walk of life search for peace and tranquillity, relaxation and escapism. Follow the course of a narrowboat holiday from planning through to confident navigation and lock operation. See the sights, walk the towpaths

and take a peek into the secret treasures of the canals and rivers of Britain. If you’re planning a narrowboat holiday, you’ll be inspired, but should you prefer to enjoy the experience from the comfort of your armchair, sit back and relax, welcome aboard.

BOMBERS OF WORLD WAR TWO DISC ONE - THE STORY OF THE LANCASTER

As RAF Bomber Command took the war to the enemy under Air Chief Marshall Arthur Harris, the four-engined Avro Lancaster reigned supreme, replacing the rugged, reliable Wellington in laying waste to German cities by night. This most successful of all World War II ‘heavies’ could carry more than its own weight in bomb load, including the 22,000 pound Grand Slam Earthquake bomb - the biggest conventional weapon ever made. And when fearless Guy Gibson led 617 Squadron to fame on the low-level Dambuster raid - one of the war’s most daring operations - the Lancaster was confirmed as an aviation legend. With recent colour film of ‘City of Lincoln’, the RAF’s last airworthy Lancaster, among the wartime footage, this is the

Lancaster’s dramatic story.

DISC TWO - VICKERS WELLINGTON When it entered service in 1938, the twin-engined Vickers Wellington began an operational career that spanned the whole of the Second World War. Rugged and reliable, it was operated by Bomber Command, Coastal Command and Transport

Command, possessing a level of versatility second to none, serving in almost every theatre of war. By the autumn of 1945 nearly 11,500 had been built. As the last one rolled off the Vickers production line, the “Wimpy” as it was affectionately known, had secured its place in history, as one of the truly great aircraft of the Second World War.

DISC THREE - RAF BOMBER COMMAND RAF Bomber Command was responsible for carrying the war to Hitler’s Germany, when Britain stood alone during the early years of the war. By 1942 losses had grown so heavy that the RAF adopted a policy of night bombing only. The staggeringly high casualties were borne with unwavering resolve by the men who knew they had a job which must be done. This is the story of the air war over Germany from the British viewpoint. It features rare archive material from both British and German

sources, new footage of surviving RAF bombers, illustrative maps and graphics, and military analysis by Dr. Robin Clifton of Warwick University.

NAVAL BATTLES OF WORLD WAR TWO DISC ONE - GREAT SEA BATTLES OF WORLD WAR TWO

The mid 1930s saw Germany rebuilding her fleets, defying the Versailles Treaty as Hitler planned to encircle Britain with his Kriegsmarine. Within hours of war’s declaration, a U-boat had claimed its first victim in an underwater reign of terror that struck merchantman and warship alike. By April 1940, Germany had sunk one million tons of Allied shipping. The entrance of Mussolini’s Italy shifted the balance of power in the Mediterranean. However the course of Naval warfare was changed in 1941 when torpedo bombers from HMS Illustrious

decimated the Italian fleet at anchor in Taranto. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbour on 7th December 1941 dwarfed Taranto, with 19 warships and 190 aircraft lost and 22,500 dead. Sea power proved crucial in the Pacific. The Battle of the Coral Sea was decisive in denying Japan a gateway to Australia and was a naval first - opposing forces, launching air attacks 120 miles apart, were never in sight of each other. After the US strike on Midway, there was no doubting the tide had turned. The era of the battleship had long gone: the

aircraft carrier was now the undisputed master of Naval warfare.

DISC TWO - THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY A ferocious battle fought between the Japanese and United States Carrier Fleets, which proved to be one of the most decisive victories and a major turning point for American the war in the Pacific. The Japanese lost four of their powerful carriers and from that point on, no

longer able to risk a major fleet versus fleet action, went on the defensive. By the time they had recovered enough to rebuild their fleet, American power had mobilised into the unstoppable force that Japan had so feared.

DISC THREE - ATLANTIC CONVOYS During World War Two, Britain was absolutely reliant on maritime trade for its survival. The protection of its merchant fleet, therefore became an issue of paramount importance. After June 1940 however, German U-Boats began to operate in the Atlantic and appalling losses

were inflicted on Allied merchant shipping. Arctic convoys were twice suspended in 1942 as German aircraft and submarines wrought havoc on the waves. The trip to the Russian port of Murmansk soon became known as the “death trip” because so few ships returned. Featur-ing powerful filmed memories of veterans from both sides of the conflict, this is an account of one of World War Two’s most pitiless theatres of operations, where men lived in constant fear of the unseen dangers of the deep. This DVD features 3-D graphics and animation to

show the realities of a submarine attack and the mechanics of a ship’s defences, with in-depth analysis from Dr Tim Bean of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

HITLER’S WAR DISC ONE - HITLER’S WAR 199-1945

By June 23rd 1940 Hitler’s dream of mastery in Europe had come true, as he triumphantly took Paris after only 10 months at war and then launched his ultimate plan for an Eastern Front. With over 100 minutes of footage, this DVD depicts Hitler’s war using rare colour archive footage, including material shot by Eva Braun at the Berghof, much of which has been unavailable in the west since World War Two.

DISC TWO - UNSOLVED MYSTERIES - THE ENIGMA OF THE SWASTIKA What are the origins of this dreaded symbol of National Socialism? How did the Swastika evolve from a Buddhist sign of good fortune to the Nazi emblem which would strike terror into the hearts of millions? Research traces the history of the Swastika through a network of shadowy occultist groups to the secretive Thule Society

and Hitler’s infant Nazi Party.

THE EAGLE AND THE SWASTIKA Four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, Adolf Hitler declared war on America. This was the only declaration of war he ever issued and one which rescued an American President, privately intent on war with Germany, but hamstrung by popular clamour for a war of retribution with Japan. Why Hitler unilaterally declared

war on the most powerful neutral nation on earth is a mystery that has never really been resolved, a mystery later compounded by Hitler’s own observation, “This war with America is a tragedy, illogical and devoid of fundamental reality”.

DISC THREE - UNSOLVED MYSTERIES - KILL HITLER Throughout Hitler’s reign only one group of men remained immune to his infamous charm. Ironically, these were the same men most necessary for Hitler’s dreams of conquest. They were the High Command of the German Army, and repeatedly during the war Hitler’s own generals would plot to remove and later kill their Fuhrer. Despite years of conspiracy and meticulous planning, this most secret aim of Germany’s bravest generals would not be achieved. Why was Hitler never able to command the unswerving loyalty of his own senior military staff? Why, despite all of their efforts, were these generals continually thwarted in their attempts to kill Hitler?

HITLER’S SECRET WEAPONS

During the Second World War, German scientists invented a range of remarkable weapons, the most awe-inspiring of which was undoubtedly the long-range rocket known to history as the V-2. Accorded the highest priority by Hitler, the V-2 was nevertheless an expensive white elephant. Why did the Germans spend so much time and effort developing a space age weapon only to arm it with less than a ton of conventional explosives? Did Hitler have plans to arm the rocket with a more expensive and deadly warhead?

enlightening manner shows you how easily this can be achieved. Watch, listen and learn from a master and perhaps this DVD will help you to improve your bags when fishing for the resilient roach.

SPECIAL FORCES DISC ONE - SPECIAL FORCES

“There is a heroism beyond all, for which no Victoria Cross is ever given because there is no official enemy nor any sort of fire, except one volley in the early morning at some spot where the noise does not echo into the newspapers”- Rudyard Kipling. It is an old military tradition that the uniform is to be worn with pride, yet some of the most highly regarded service badges are rarely, if ever, seen in public. Their wearers, if they wear this uniform at all, are unlikely to be found in any grand victory parade, even when they have played a crucial role in securing victory. Such men belong to what are usually called ‘Special Forces’, shadowy, highly select units whose very existence is scarcely acknowledged by their own governments. The right to wear the insignia of formations such as the Green Berets is not easily won... Using rare and fascinating footage, we bring you the story of

these men.

DISC TWO - SNIPERS The story of the sniping war as it developed during World War II, throughout the various theatres of war. At the outset of war sniping was not considered relevant to modern warfare, but its importance was gradually realised by all the major combatants. This programme covers the development of different weapons and techniques adopted by the German, Russian, British, US and Japanese armies. Furthermore it covers the psychology of the sniper and his association with regular soldiers. The sniper was and remains until this day, a contradictory figure, respected as a skilled professional,

hated as an assassin.

DISC THREE - ELITE FORCES The paratroops have long been firmly established as the best-known of all “elite forces”.The idea of “parachute troops” was originally put forward in 1918, but it was not really until the Second World War that the modern paratrooper emerged. The first units were almost entirely the creation of General Kurt Student, Commander of the German Airborne Forces, whose men carried out some of the most spectacular exploits of the war. They played a key role in the lightning conquest of Normandy. The supposedly impregnable Belgium fortress of Eban-Emael, designed to stop an army, was eliminated by a handful of determined attackers in gliders. The capture of Crete in 1941 by a purely airborne assault remains the great classic of its kind. The brilliant early successes of the German paratroops rapidly led to the creation of similar elite forces by both the British and the Americans. Three Allied airborne divisions took part in the Normandy landings of June 1944 and although many of the drops went widely astray, the paratroops went on to achieve nearly all their objectives. But it is not merely on the dazzling airborne actions that the paratroops’ claim to fame is founded.

Deployed as elite infantry, their record is no less impressive, especially in defence - as was demonstrated so notably by the Germans at Cassino, the British at Arnhem and the Americans at Bastogne. The paratroops provided some of the war’s greatest heroes.

HITLER’S SPECIAL FORCES DISC ONE - STORMTROOPERS

One of the most potent weapons used by the German Army during the first two years of the Second World War was the use of the infamous ‘Stormtroopers’. These were sent in advance of the main thrust of the attack - taking their targets by complete surprise - in a quick, but immensely effective, short outburst of heavy force. These raids were carried out by top units of trained marines, paratroopers and infantry and proved to be highly successful time after time. Includes archive footage showing various attacks plus interviews with stormtroopers.

DISC TWO - WAFFEN-SS The SS had its beginnings in the turbulent street politics of the Weimar Republic. It became Heinrich Himmler’s personal power-base and under him the SS grew into a vast private army and state-within-the-state. It was a chaotic, corrupt and often grossly inefficient organisation but one part of it - the “Waffen” or “Armed” SS, formed initially as a fighting force - achieved worldwide fame and notoriety. The Waffen-SS won a unique reputation for daring elan and unfailing professionalism in combat. Yet if their courage was unquestioned, so too was the fear and loathing which they elicited - even, eventually, amongst their own people, and in the regular soldiers alongside whom they fought. The SS played a conspicuous role in most of the important German triumphs, one far disproportionate to their numbers. In the long period of

decline and retreat, as the Germans were steadily pushed back from east and west, despite repeatedly sustaining horrendous casualties, their discipline remained unbroken, their fighting ardour unimpaired, almost to the very end. After the war, the Waffen-SS were burdened with the near-exclusive blame for the most hideous crimes of the Nazi regime. It was only unfair insofar as many others were involved as well; and for all their matchless undoubted bravery, the Waffen-SS bears a reputation which will remain forever stained with infamy.

DISC THREE - PARATROOPERS With the use of archive footage, follow this documented account of Germany’s elite parachute troops. Restricted after World War One, Germany looked on as Russia and America experimented with an airborne army. Convinced of its strategic and tactical potential, German leaders such as Goering and Student championed the creation of an elite parachute corp. When Hitler declared war on the civilised world, the new paratrooper divisions were to prove instrumental as the tidal wave of the Third Reich poured across Europe. From the opening

day’s hostilities in Poland, through France, Italy, Greece and North Africa, Hitler’s elite parachute troops were to prove their worth.

THE HOLOCAUST - THE UNTOLD STORY DISC ONE - GHETTO THERESIENSTADT

Between 1941 and 1945 the small fortress town of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia became a transit point to the death camps in the east for thousands of Czech, German, Austrian and Dutch Jews. All those deported to Theresienstadt were led to believe it was an “end camp” from which they would travel no further. They were promised a comfortable and peaceful life in the “Reich home for the aged” and were hoodwinked into signing over to the S.S. all of their properties and assets. In reality, many would be sent on to death camps such as Auschwitz. From

1943, following international concern, the Nazis developed Theresienstadt into a “show camp” a propaganda exercise designed to conceal from the outside world what was really happening to Europe’s Jews. A large scale “beautification” programme swung into action, giving the camp a pleasant and respectable facade, a deception that succeeded in shielding the terrible truth.

DISC TWO - THE YELLOW STAR - THE PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS IN EUROPE “One hundred dead are a catastrophe; millions of dead are a statistic” The horrendous observations of Adolf Eichmann. This Oscar™ nominated documentary serves not only as a remembrance but a lesson and a warning for the future. It follows the plight of Europe’s Jews during the

terrifying period from 1933 until the final defeat of the Third Reich in 1945. Never before had the world seen such contempt for human life on such a grand scale, the murder of an estimated 6 million Jews, with countless others persecuted. During the 1930s a wave of national fervour swept through a tumultuous Germany; people look for answers, and the politicians were all too willing to point the finger of blame towards the Jewish population. Few, if any, could have foreseen how the views of one man would unfold…that man was Adolf Hitler.

DISC THREE - MAJDANEK Discovered by Russian troops in July 1944 the Majdanek Nazi concentration and extermination camp near Lubin was the scene of some of Hitler’s most disturbing handy work. Apart from using carbon monoxide, Majdanek was one of only two camps to use the deadly Zyklon B to

poison victims in its gas chambers. In the hands of the Nazis, the efficient use of these chemicals would result in the extermination of amassive number of inmates. Majdanek was also unique among the death camps, in that Jewish prisoners did not form the overwhelming majority of its intake. Of the total inmates only 40% were Jewish, 35% Polish and the balance predominantly Belarusians, Ukrainians, Austrians, French, Russians, Italians and Dutch. This rare and stark documentary graphically portrays the methodical murder, starvation and torture of an estimated

2 million innocent victims and demonstrates the frightening efficiency of the German death camps. Also captured here on film are rare scenes from a Russian post-war tribunal, where survivors are seen giving evidence against captured SS officers and camp officials, this evidence was often to result in the conviction and execution of those standing accused.

THE HOLOCAUST - SHAME OF A NATION DISC ONE - THE LIBERATION OF AUSCHWITZ

Etched deeply into the pages of history, Auschwitz conjures up images of death, torture and unimaginable human suffering. At the time of release only 18 minutes of the footage contained within this DVD had been seen in the west; despite it being used as damning prosecution evidence at the Nuremburg Trials. Recorded from January - February 1945 by a Soviet film crew attached to the 1st Ukrainian Front, the programme tells the story of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp. Captain Alexander Vorontsov, a member of the camera

crew, describes the emotions that he and his comrades felt as they were confronted by the appalling scenes at Hitler’s infamous death camp. In the interest of preserving the original character of the material, the footage has been left unedited, emphasising the truly shocking nature of the crimes recorded.

DISC TWO - DACHAU & SACHSENHAUSEN Whilst Hitler sought the answers to his “Jewish problem” more and more centres of containment sprung up throughout Nazi occupied Europe. Two such camps were Dachau and Sachsenhausen, and although perhaps not such recognisable names as Auschwitz, they were

no less crucial in the persecution and extermination of the European Jews. Under the watchful eye of Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and Hitler’s right hand man, a series of containment, transit and death camps were built within Europe, to systematically cleanse all those people considered inferior by the Third Reich. With the liberation of these two camps in April 1945, the true extent of man’s cruelty to his fellow man would be revealed; the untold dead, inhumane treatment and squalid conditions would be laid bare for the entire

world to see.

DISC THREE - RAVENSBRUCK & BUCHENWALD Ravensbruck: Women from more than 20 countries were incarcerated between 1939 and 1945 in the Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany. They were subjected to gross maltreatment, humiliation and some were tortured to death all in the name of the Third Reich. The purpose of this documentary is to keep alive the memory of the fate suffered by these women and the inhumane treatment inflicted by their captors. Buchenwald: After being established in the German town of Weimar in the summer of 1937, Buchenwald

was to develop into one of the largest concentration camps in Germany, with approximately 250,000 inmates from some 35 different countries. More than 50,000 were to die during the reign of terror, by torture, deliberate starvation and systematic culling. Buchenwald was eventually to be liberated by US troops in April 1945.

CLAY SHOOTING FOR THE BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED SHOT DISC ONE - CLAY SHOOTING FOR THE BEGINNER

When it comes to taking up the sport of clay pigeon shooting it can be a daunting proposition. How do you start? Where do you go? What gun should you use? Not to mention safety, gun-fit, cartridges and chokes… it can be a very confusing time! Our advice… get expert tuition, with the help of Rod Brammer; top coach from the Shalden Shooting School in Devon, we have created here an insight into how you too can get started in the sport and to answer many of the questions that will arise along the way. Whether it’s your intention to just shoot a few clays at the local club for fun or to go on to more serious competition this DVD will be a helpful reference. You will enjoy Rod’s laid back approach to the way he instructs his pupil Liam Dale and how he instills the basic knowledge and confidence in the novice shot. You will learn the techniques involved in tackling a variety of the easier targets and also get an insight into how to conduct yourself on the shooting ground. You may also like to know that this is the first in a trilogy of clay shooting DVDs. If you’ve enjoyed this one and hope to progress

in the sport, look out for the others; Clay Shooting for the Intermediate and Clay Shooting for the Advanced Shot.

DISC TWO - CLAY SHOOTING FOR THE INTERMEDIATE So, Liam Dale has put into practice the things he learnt in our first programme and is now hitting a respectable percentage of the targets he shoots at. He now understands the importance of safety and a lot of the more technical aspects of the sport. It’s time to return to the Shalden Shooting School in Devon and to get top coach Rod Brammer to take him onto the next level. Rod will be explaining to Liam how to master some of the more tricky targets; one of which proves to be a real tester for our improving shot. Whilst Liam regroups from a difficult target, we catch sight of his wheelchair-bound friend Andy Beadsley, expertly performing on the driven pheasant stand. To introduce his pupil to a little competitive pressure, Rod suggests

that Liam should shoot a “head to head” with Jacky Coote on the driven grouse stand. Boys against girls… just shows this sport can be enjoyed by everyone. (For those of you who’ve participated in sporting shooting for a while, you will no doubt recognise the voice of that great character Chris Craddock who adds his expert comment to their performances but who has sadly passed away since this programme was filmed). In preparation for the real thing, we end the programme with Liam putting down his over and under, picking up a side by side and shooting at simulated coveys of driven partridge. For good measure, there’s even a demonstration from Rod on how to clean your gun properly when you’ve finished shooting. This being the second programme in a trilogy of clay shooting DVDs we hope you will now have gained enough knowledge and are ready to step up to the last in the series; Clay Shooting for the Advanced Shot. Here you’ll get top tips from none other than the English Sporting, former World Champion Carl Bloxham, Phil Coley a performance enhancement specialist and with the aid

of the “gun cam” have a lesson in DTL with former England International coach Ian Coley.

DISC THREE - CLAY SHOOTING FOR THE ADVANCED SHOT In this, the last of the three programmes in the series, you’ll get an idea of what it would really be like to be considered an advanced shot. Although you are now at a pretty competent level, the title “advanced shot” is still best reserved for characters like those that will be teaching you today. The first part of the programme is filmed at Edge Hill Shooting Grounds where you will see Carl Bloxham the former World Champion in the English Sporting discipline, putting some pretty good shots (young and old) through their paces. Carl analyses faults that have crept into their styles and passes on tips to improve consistency. He is ably assisted by Phil Coley the performance enhancement specialist and they will be taking you through a variety

of targets. We then move on with our old friend Liam Dale who has a lesson in the finer points of shooting DTL. What better venue than Chatcombe Estate Shooting School and what better tutor than the former England International coach Ian Coley. To begin with Ian explains the differences between a trap gun, which is more suited to DTL and Liam’s normal sporting gun. The differences conceded, Liam borrows a trap gun and visits the pattern plate to establish exactly where it shoots. See how with expert coaching Ian helps Liam to adapt to this different type of discipline. With the aid of a “gun cam” (a camera mounted on the rib of a gun) Ian explains

the different gun hold positions and demonstrates when to mount and where to shoot at each bird from the various stations. Also in this section there is a very useful segment showing the most common faults for you to avoid.

ricanes and tornadoes produce the fastest winds on earth. This DVD explains how these freaks of weather are formed and what scientists know about them. Extensive footage from “storm chasers”, interviews with eyewitnesses and home-video make compelling viewing as winds up to 300mph tear across the screen.

FISHING FOR BEGINNERS - FLY, COARSE & CARP FISHING DISC ONE - FLY FISHING

What better way to get to grips with the basics of fly fishing and to broaden your approach, than to learn from a programme which features former England International team member, coach and manager Simon Gawesworth and the one time European Fly Fishing Champion Iain Barr. Let’s start our programme by joining Simon at Blakewell Fisheries in Devon where he’ll be showing us a variety of fly fishing equipment and how best to assemble it. Simon will then move on to expertly demonstrate presentation and how to catch rainbow trout on nymphs and ultimately the dry fly. There’ll even be a fleeting glimpse of a nice brown trout which embarrassingly

for Simon evades final capture! We’ll then go to Lenches Lake in Evesham where the inimitable Iain Barr will show us the type of tactics that made him European Champion. Ian will be fishing with a team of three nymphs, all the time analysing for us his style of fishing, the methods he’s using and the reasoning behind his actions. Compare the approach to the wonderful sport of fly fishing by two very different characters, both experts in the field but who utilise totally contrasting styles. Learn from their teaching and hopefully it will broaden your knowledge and improve your skills in the ever fascinating world of fly fishing.

DISC TWO - COARSE FISHING Whether it be pole fishing, or float fishing with rod and line that’s your particular bag… they’re both featured here and who better to demonstrate the different techniques, than three of the best anglers in the country. Four times World Coarse Fishing Champion, Bob Nudd MBE…England International and fishing columnist, Will Raison and finally our old mate and big fish expert; Des Taylor. Our programme starts with Bob Nudd and a pole fishing session for big fish at Pisces Fishery on the Cambridge/Norfolk border. Bob expertly demonstrates the methods, baits and tactics used to produce the best results from a small still water. There are loads of tips

and advice here from a man whose knowledge and experience is second to none. Then on to Gold Valley Lakes where we join Will Raison; Will shows us his tactics with the pole, which have helped make him one of the country’s top competition anglers. Leaving Will to bag up, we travel south to Romsey in Hampshire where we meet up with that ever popular character and big fish expert Des Taylor. Des is fishing Broadlands Lake, which in his words, is “stuffed with fish”. Watch Des with rod and line successfully capture a substantial bag of quality Roach…using what to some might be considered old fashion match tactics. No matter whether you’re a

complete novice, an occasional angler or someone who just wants to improve their angling skills there’s something here for everyone.

DISC THREE - CARP FISHING So you want to learn how to catch carp…well who would know more about that subject than the journalist, author and broadcaster Julian Cundiff? Julian has specialised in the capture of carp, written countless articles and broadcast several programmes about the skills that he’s developed and the methods he’s used to catch fish throughout the years. However, this programme is not sixty minutes of various fishermen hauling in carp after carp after carp; rather it’s an in-depth look at how to improve your skills as an angler for Britain’s favourite fish. During the programme Julian will demonstrate in great detail, how to make your own boilies. He’ll show you a couple of his favourite mixes, with tips and hints to make what appears to be a complicated process very simple. Julian will show you how to set up your end tackle, how to make hair rigs; he explains the importance of presentation and throughout the programme, will offer you endless amounts of priceless tips and advice. Oh,

and of course you will see Julian putting all that advice into practice, as he catches some very nice common carp. We hope that you enjoy this programme and that you will be able to use the knowledge passed on by Julian to help make you become a better angler.

LOST TREASURES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

DISC ONE - ANCIENT INDIA The story of India is one of fabulous dynasties of kings, timeless belief systems and golden ages of culture. This fascinating programme journeys through the centuries to demonstrate how glories such as the Taj Mahal and

the Ajanta Caves reflect the character of a unique people. With the aid of state-of-the-art computer generated graphics and animation, experience a journey through and marvel at an ancient city in the Indus Valley that existed as early as the second millennium BC. Narrated by John Viner.

DISC TWO - ANCIENT CHINA Man has constructed many remarkable monuments but only one that can be seen clearly from outer space; the Great Wall of China. It remains the most soaring architectural achievement of the Chinese people but is by no

means the only one. The Terracotta Army, Beijing’s Forbidden City and the simple pagoda are all examined here and explained clearly, using expert views and impressive computer animation. Narrated by John Viner.

DISC THREE - SAMURAI JAPAN Japanese history had been shrouded in mystery from mythical beginnings until it embraced modernism in the late 19th century. A nation of traditions and customs, this DVD examines some of ancient Japan’s architecture, the famous samurai code of Bushido, the Tea Ceremony and also gives an in-depth background to the eminent Japanese dynasties. A people who were once identified for their fearsome warriors but are now perhaps better

known for balance, order and calm. Narrated by John Viner.

THE GREAT ADVENTURERS

DISC ONE - CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Christopher Columbus would become known to history as the man who discovered the New World, and the story of how he accomplished his momentous feat is a tale of disappointment, exploitation, gold-fever and courage. Aboard the Santa Maria searching west in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe, Columbus would discover a remarkable series of islands, but would also leave a legacy which is still seen today. Expert analysis, extensive period imagery and dramatised re-enactments tell

the story of one of the greatest discoveries in history. Narrated by Roy Cane.

DISC TWO - SIR FRANCIS DRAKE A large thorn in the Spanish side, Sir Francis Drake proved an illusive foe in the latter half of the 16th Century. As empires and kingdoms expanded so the race for the dominance of sea lanes became an essential goal as gold, jewels and other goods required safe passage. Betrayed by the Spanish at an early age, Drake would never again trust the word of a Spaniard, and made it his life’s mission to cause havoc, plunder and seek revenge, culminating is the destruction of the 1588 Armada. Including footage shot onboard a seagoing replica of the Golden Hind, this DVD maps the life of Drake from his first journey as a master and commander, to his famous victory over the Spanish in 1588. Narrated by Michael Leighton.

DISC THREE - SIR WALTER RALEIGH Like his contemporary Sir Francis Drake, Raleigh held a contempt and loathing for the Spanish that he possessed from an early age. Unlike Drake however, Raleigh found himself deeply embroiled in court and royal politics that would ultimately

restrict his ability for travel, exploration and adventure. A believer in the legend of El Dorado, Raleigh repeatedly travelled to South America in a bid for colonisation for his queen, trade routes for his country, and untold riches and fame for himself. Dramatised “eye-witness” accounts, reconstructions and period imagery help to convey the tale of one of England’s greatest heroes. Narrated by Michael Leighton.

GERMAN FIGHTER AIRCRAFT OF WW

DISC ONE - JUNKERS JU87 Acclaimed by the Germans as the “scourge of Europe”, the “aircraft that conquered nations”, the “supreme weapon”, the Junkers JU87 dive-bomber attained greater notoriety than any other weapon in the arsenal with which

Germany launched the Second World War. It was more widely discussed and aroused greater controversy than many other more worthy aircraft. It was slow, unwieldy and the most natural prey of the fighter, yet within the first nine months of the war the JU87 acquired a legendary reputation.

DISC TWO - FOCKE-WULF FW190 No combat aircraft ever achieved perfection, but at the time of its debut the FW 190 probably came as near to this elusive goal as any other fighter. This aircraft was undoubtedly the finest warplane ever produced by Germany and

from the moment it entered the theatre of war, the FW 190 achieved a slim margin of superiority over the RAF aircraft in fighter versus fighter combat. In the ground attack role it subsequently proved its ability to absorb considerable punishment and in return deliver a more then powerful punch.

DISC THREE - THE MESSERSCHMITT BF109 By the outbreak of the Second World War, the German Luftwaffe possessed more than 3,500 frontline aircraft. Over one third of these were single engine fighters and for the next six years one of these fighters would become the flagship of the German fighter force - the Messerschmitt BF 109. This legendary aircraft remained in operational service throughout the war, fighting on all fronts and in doing so was responsible for shooting down twice as many

enemy aircraft as any other fighter plane in the annals of military history.

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE - WW SPECIAL OPERATIONS

DISC ONE - OPERATION THUNDERCLAP In the closing stages of the Second World War, Air Marshal “Bomber” Harris took the controversial decision to target civilians by laying waste to German cities. With waves of bombers crossing the German border, many towns and

cities were razed to the ground. One such city was Dresden. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the attacks that ultimately realised their intentions, that of crushing the German people’s morale and bringing the war to an early end. However, the debate still continues; was Air Marshal Harris the murderer of innocent civilians, or simply a man with strong enough ideals to adopt a tactic which would ultimately lead to victory over the German war machine?

DISC TWO - OPERATION GOMORRHA The aerial bombing in the summer of 1943 devastated the people, port and buildings of Hamburg, reducing a once prosperous city to nothing more than a pile of ashes. Whilst Allied bombers pounded the city, the terrified citizens took cover in cellars and purpose-built bomb shelters, in hopes of enduring the raids. Survivors emerged to find their city engulfed in flames, in what was to become known as the Hamburg Firestorm. With the level of destruction; culture and

architecture being completely destroyed, the city was never to recover to its former glory. Such was the nature of the onslaught that scars of the aftermath of the bombings still remain to this day.

DISC THREE - OPERATION MILLENNIUM As American troops entered the city of Cologne in March 1945, they were awestruck at the scene of utter devastation which lay before them. The once great city had been targeted as part of the Allied “Terror Bombing” campaign, a

tactic that’s morality is still debated today. Archive footage and eye witness accounts go only part of the way to describing the nightmare that had immersed what was Germany’s fourth largest city.

GREAT AMERICAN CAVALRY BATTLES DISC ONE - THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

It was the most tragic episode in American history. During four years of bitter and bloody fighting between the states, more than 600,000 troops from the Union and Confederate sides lost their lives. The bloody events at places such as Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh, Cold Harbor, Vicksburg and Fredericksburg are still burned deep into the American psyche, never to be forgotten. From the first shots at Fort Sumter to the emotional Confederate surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, this programme tells the story of the conflict which scarred

the soul of a nation. It features superb battle reconstructions and depictions of army life, dramatised “eye-witness” accounts, period photographs and images, plus expert comment and analysis. Narrated by Robert Powell.

DISC TWO - THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG Gettysburg was the turning point of the American Civil War and is, perhaps, the most famous battle of that bloody and bitter conflict. However, only weeks before, the cavalry forces of North and South had met in what would prove to be the largest cavalry engagement of the war, the Battle of Brandy Station. This is the dramatic story of that crucial battle, a fight which would dispel the myth of the “invincible” Confederate cavalry forever. This DVD features a magnificent reconstruction of the Battle of Brandy Station specially filmed in

Virginia, the largest cavalry re-enactment ever staged in America. Also featuring superb dramatised “eye-witness” accounts, computer generated 3D mapping techniques plus delightful period imagery and photographs, this programme provides an unforgettable record of a vital day in the American Civil War. Narrated by Michael Leighton, Featuring expert comment and analysis by John M Fuss of the Gettysburg National Park.

DISC THREE - THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIGHORN One of history’s most famous battles also saw the death of one of its most colourful characters - the charismatic and flamboyant George Armstrong Custer. Desperate to win a victory to restore his flagging reputation, Custer trusted his luck once too often with disastrous

consequences for the once-feted hero and the men under his command. Never before had the Indian tribes won such a spectacular victory over the white man, but as history reveals, the victory would cost them dearly. This DVD features stunning re-enactments, new footage of the Little Bighorn battlefield as it is today, expert commentary from battlefield guides and period imagery. Narrated by Michael Leighton.

The Emperor’s irresistible progress into the vast Russian interior saw many brutal conflicts including the Battle of Borodino, one of the bloodiest day’s fighting in military history. A day of savage fighting which destroyed the dreams of Napoleon and freed the Continent from the threat of his vaulting ambitions. Yet it could all have been so different, for the outcome of the great

THE FALKLANDS WAR - 5TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION DISC ONE - GOOSE GREEN 198

The fight at Goose Green in May 1982 was the most famous battle of the Falklands War, which saw British and Argentine troops struggle for control of the Falkland Islands. In the wake of the shock Argentine invasion, Britain sent a hastily assembled Task Force to the South Atlantic charged with the job of restoring British sovereignty. The Argentine positions at Goose Green were thought to pose a threat to the British advance across the Islands and troops from the Parachute Regiment were sent to deal with it. After 12 hours of bloody fighting, the Argentine position was finally overrun and

the British advance on the capital Port Stanley could continue. Moving pictures were beamed back to Britain of the aftermath of the battle, bringing home the stark realities of combat - a sobering reminder amid the political rhetoric and jingoism.

DISC TWO - THE FALL OF PORT STANLEY June 1982 saw the final battles of the Falklands War. For the servicemen of the British Task Force, the campaign to defeat a determined enemy had been difficult and costly, but now the capital Stanley, the final prize, lay within their grasp. erel are used. Des catches good double-figure pike on his chosen methods, finishing with a fine 20 pounder. How to cast, play, unhook and carefully return each fish is shown, and the film is enjoyable, as well as instructive.

DISC TWO - STILL WATER FISHING Keith Arthur has been acknowledged as one of the best anglers in the country. In this video he demonstrates the art of still water fishing. Fishing a lake eleven foot deep, he shows how to fish the Waggler, and the Sliding

Float, and also discusses the art of shotting and the most important, feeding. He also catches a lot of fish. Filmed with the cooperation of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

DISC THREE - RIVER FISHING Jan Porter first made his name on the River Trent in the early 1980s, fishing the swimfeeder. Be it block and feeder with maggot, or the open ended feeder using caster and hemp combinations, Jan has very few equals

when employing this devastating method. In this film, Jan deals with every facet of the method, looking at rods, lines and the multitude of swimfeeders on the market today. He also looks at the problems confronting the pleasure angler when facing running water and demonstrates the importance of balancing the feeder to the flow. This is the complete programme for the would-be feeder fisherman.
