Landmark has added to its historical map archive with an additional 443,477 Ordnance Survey maps, including SIMs, SUSIs and Large-Scale National Grid Data bringing the archive to 1 million map tiles. Landmark’s historical map collection is an extensive and unique digital archive of historical maps which gives a complete step-by-step picture of land use changes that have occurred between the 1840s and present day. Each map is site-centred for ease of comparison and overlaid with the current National Grid so that historical features can be accurately identified and located on to modern mapping. Historical maps are available at scales of 1:10,560/1:10,000, 1:2,500 and 1:1,250 scales. How have Landmark achieved this?Landmark has scanned every SIM, SUSI andLarge-Scale National Grid Data held at OrdnanceSurvey in Southampton, totalling 443,477 maps. Thisbrings the total Landmark historical maps archive to1 million map tiles, originally sourced from the OSarchive, the War Store at Trinity College, Dublin and theRoyal Geographical Society archive.

These scans were named according to their NationalGrid tile, cropped and geo-referenced to allow them tobe overlaid with modern mapping and features. Thefinal stage of the process involved running intensequality assurance procedures, ensuring the greatestaccuracy possible.
