Note: Random Rounding. Statistics Canadauses a technique called random rounding thatrounds the last digit of every number to 0 or 5 on arandom basis. This is used to protect theconfidentiality of individual responses. Datathroughout this report has been rounded. As aresult, parts may not add to the total.

Both are core city plus built up surrounding urban area excluding Indian Reserves.

1 The estimates of First Nation's persons living off reserveused in this report were calculated by subtracting the on-reserve Aboriginal population from the total populationreporting only North American Indian identity. This wasbased on the assumption that few non-First NationsAboriginal people lived on-reserve. This approach wasused because data availability; 2,295 people or 3% of theFirst Nations off-reserve population were thusexcluded. Also excluded were 1,440 persons living off-reserve who reported having multiple Aboriginal identityand 3,770 who did not indicate Aboriginal identity but didreport as being a Registered or Treaty Indian and/or a bandmember.

Off-Reserve First Nations & Métis

Almost three-quarters of British Columbia's Aboriginal population does not live on-reserve. The majority live in urban areas but about one in twelve First Nations live in non-reserve rural areas while about one in eight Métis do
