THE BRITISH INDIAN ARMY 1919.
In 1919, the Military Forces in India were organized in two armies, Northern and Southern from which theField Army for service in the North-West Frontier was formed.
A Division of this Field Army consisted of three infantry Brigades (each one with a British and three Indian
infantry battalions), one squadron of Indian Cavalry, one field artillery Brigade (two 18 pdr. batteries and one
4.5 ins. howitzer batteries), one mountain artillery brigade (two batteries of 2.75 ins. guns), two companies of
machine guns (16 guns each), two companies of sapper and miners, one pioneer battalion, one divisional
signal company, a divisional ammunition column and other service elements.
A Cavalry Brigade was composed of one horse artillery battery, one British and two Indian cavalry regiments,
one squadron of machine guns (12 guns), one field troop of sappers and miners, one signal troop and an
ammunition column.
There were other units detailed for the defense of the North-West Frontier, named as Independent Brigades
composed of all arms and with sufficient transport to make the fully mobile. Each consisted of one regiment of
Indian cavalry, one battery of mountain artillery, one armored car battery of three cars and four battalions of
Indian infantry.
When war with Afghanistan broke out, all units of the Field Army were short of their authorized strength.
Demobilization of British personnel had begun and large numbers of men had left for England without being
replaced. There were eight regular battalions left in India for the whole period of the Great War that had manypre-war soldiers in their ranks, so they had maintained a high standard of training and efficiency and there
were also some British Territorial battalions, but they were bored of India and looking for the travel to

England. For their part, the Indian units were also short of men due to the high demands of the Great War and
the fact that many of them were still on their way home.
The general standard of the troops at this period was comparatively low. There were many recruits and second
rate troops in the depots and too many veterans discharged or in transit from the Great War battlefields. In
addition, both British and Indian units were short of senior officers, something very important in the type of
fighting in Afghanistan and the North-West Frontier, which necessitated a great degree of training in company
and platoon leadership.
Another source of manpower was the Militia, a way to give employment to the turbulent trans-frontier men
by raising units which would provide a scope for their martial qualities. The real possibility was that these
militias could swell the number of the enemy if their fellow tribesmen were in arms against the British.
THE RIFLE PLATOON
The British Indian Army had acquired the structure of the Infantry platoon born in the Western Front. It wasnow a small but very flexible unit with a great volume of firepower and backed by a vast array of support
elements. This platoon was perfect for the small war typical of the Frontier.
