ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH MEMBERSOF THE

SWISS ALPINE CLUB.

THE WAR—ROLL OF HONOUR.1918.

We annex a list of 158 of our members who have joined the Army or Navy, but there are no doubt several omissions, and members will much oblige by sending us further information on the subject. In addition a large number of our members above the military age served their- country as members of Volunteer Corps, National Reserve, Special Constables, Ammunition Makers, etc. A list of these will be kept at the Club Room. The Committee decided that for those members serving in the Army or Navy the Subscription to Association should be voluntary. After the War all members serving will be invited as guests of the Association to a Public Dinner. It is hoped to fix this dinner in May or June, 1919.

MEMBERS KILLED IN THE WAR. (With Portraits.)

Sergeant Instructor A. C. Adams. (Oberland Section S.A.C.)

Bom 18< 7. Educated Chapel Royal School and studied after in Berlin. Climbed in Switzerland and N. Wales. Joined Army as soon as War was declared—Yeomanry Rough Riders, Artists’, and then C.S.M.I. Lewis Gun School in France.

I am very sorry to have to tell you that Sergt. A. C. Adams was killed on the 30th March. The staff of the school had very suddenly to take up a position east of Corbin, where they were in action from the 27th to the 30th. He was killed by shellfire whilst trying to keep the Germans out of a trench with a Lewis gun. I myself was not with school at the time, though 1 saw him the day the school went up. He was very cheerful and longing to have a go at the Hun. During the fighting he was absolutely first rate, and when orders were received to hold the trench which had been shelled to pieces, it was he who at once pushed forward into it with a Lewis gun, and although under heavy shell fire he got his gun into action, and held on there until he was killed. At the request of six of his fellow X.C.O.’s who were with him. I have sent in his name for a decoration. He has been one of my most loyal assistants. He had no thought at all of himself where work was concerned; and if there was a job to be done of any kind, he was only too willing to lend a hand; for instance, during the fortnight before he was killed he turned stage carpenter and made the

Hisback cloth and wings of a stage we were putting up. fellow X.C.O.’s, too, have a tremendous regard for him; he was of course a much older man than most of them, and a much better educated one; yet he never put on any side, was always full of fun. and ready to join in any games if he could. You should have seen him playing rounders, or tip and run and at the same time set an example of quiet good, taste which they followed and played up to almost unknowingly. He was a first rate instructor, a very loyal assistant and a very good friend of mine. and. we shall nil miss him here tremendously, not only for his keenness and ability, but because he was one of those men who hated all trickery and unfair dealing, and who could always be relied on to play the game to the end.

W. G. Thomas, Captain,19th Corps Lewis Gun School.

Majob A. B. Challis, R.G.A. (Geneva Section.)

Many of our members will be deeply grieved to hear of the loss of Arthur Challis, aged 46. He was killed instantly on September 21st, 1918, by a bomb dropped from a German aeroplane as he was walking back from his observation post. He was a member of our first committee, and for some years Honorary Auditor of our Association. He was born 1872, educated at Westminster, 1885 to 1888, and then went to Ouchy in Switzerland for a year to study languages. He was then articled to Dalston <fc Elleman, 1890, and admitted a Solicitor in 1895, and was afterwards managing clerk to Faithfull & Owen. He was a partner in the firm of Smith & Challis from 1900 until his death. He played football and cricket for the old Westminsters. He was a very fine lawn tennis player and won the championship at the Streatham Club. When at school in Switzerland, aged 17, he attempted Mont Blanc, but the party was driven back to the Grand Mulets by snow storms. In 1904 he climbed the Wetterhorn and other mountains. After this he chiefly went out for the winter seasons to Montana, Fionnay, Chamounix and skied with Captain Moore, G. G. Wace, J. R. Dixon, Fitzherbert and Parkin. His guide, Theytez, was killed on a skiing expedition in 1911 by falling into a crevasse on the Glacier de Seilon, Arolla, but owing to temporary indisposition Major Challis did not go with the party that day.

Here are some extracts relating to him: —“ What a good fellow he was, such excellent company and

full of cheeriness.” W.A.M.“ He was one of the first to adapt skiing to mountaineering.

I went with him 2 years and found what an excellent and cheerful companion he was. On the Wildhorn our then guide did’nt- know the district and was sulky and tired. We had to try a new way down on account of the lateness of the hour. I had to guide and Challis to get the guide along the best way he could. I took them down about 1000 feet off the glacier on a steep snow slope with our ski’s off. The guide continually assured us we would be killed, but we got down to a chalet by dark and stayed there for the rest of the night. I had no experience of avalanches at that time and did not realize the danger of the slope but of course Challis did.” J.R.D.

“ He was one of the best men I have ever met. I was with him at Montana 1911 for 3 weeks.” G.G.W.

“ He was my oldest friend. I knew him since he. was 7, and a kinder, straighter, better hearted man never lived. We shall never go off on a holiday together again, but there remains the happy memory of many joyous times together and the loss of an old and valued friend.” Sir. L.S.

Before 1914 he was for several years in the Kent Yeomanry, and shortly after the war received a Commission in the R.G.A. and was a Major when he was killed.

(iGeneva Section S.A.C.)Bernard Henry Ellis, who died in hospital at Wimereux,

April 21st, 1918, of wounds received in action on March 25th of the same year, was the younger son of Henry Ellis, Esq., of Potters Bar and Lyme Regis, and was born in May, 1885. He was educated at U.C.S., Gower Street, and after studying for a year abroad he eventually became a partner in a firm of London solicitors. On leaving school, he joined the London Division of the R.N.V.R., and on the outbreak of war was rated as C.P.O. in the Benbow Battn., R.N. Division. He was present at the siege of Antwerp in October, 1914, escaping internment in Holland, and for his services during operations was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the D.S.M. Shortly after this he was given a Commission, and became Adjutant of his battalion. He went to Gallipoli in May, 1915, where he remained until the final evacuation, as Adjutant of the ANSON Battn., and promoted to the rank of Lieut.-Commander. Prom May, 1916, until his death he served with the R.N.D. in Prance. In November, 1916, he commanded his battalion at the battle of the Ancre, and was awarded the D.S.O. for his services. In May, 1917. he was promoted to Commander, and given command of the HAWKE Battalion, R.N.D. He was leading his battn. against the advancing enemy when he received his mortal wound, and in so doing held the line that our retreat might be carried out in good order.

He was loved and admired by all ranks, and was one of those, of whom a brother officer says, “ he never expected his men to do what he could not do himself.”

In February, 1915, he married Marjorie, elder daughter of Lt.-Colonel Blumfield, 9th Middlesex Regt.

He climbed in Switzerland and chiefly with his friend, Capt. Brewitt-Taylor, who was also killed in 1918, and an account of their climbs will be found under the sketch of Captain Brewitt- Taylor, page 10.

He was afterwards a scholar of Caius College, Cambridge, and in 1900 took his B.A. degree (Classical Tripos) and was admitted a student at Lincoln’s Inn, being then 21 years of^age, and was called to the Bar on June 24th, 1903. Mr. Hartree had for some years before his death a large practice in work of the best class. He joined the Artist’s Rifles O.T.C., and a commission very soon followed. Bar. He was a member of our Association (Geneva Section) and served on the Committee 1913-15. He was also a member of the Alpine Club. He was a fine climber and made many good ascents amongst which may be mentioned the Matterhorn by the Zinut Arrete, the Weisshorn Obergahelhorn from the Mountet Hut, descending by the Arhen Arete. The late Alois Pollinger was his guide in the year 1909, the last season before this great guide died, and Mr. Hartree was the last person to climb with him. Since that time Alois Pollinger, the son, became his guide in all his future seasons in the Alps. The writer had the privilege of climbing with Mr. Hartree and never can he forget the delightful time spent in the company of one who was always bright and cheerful under any circumstances and any weather: he was immensely popular with all who knew him, and the Association has lost a good friend. Our sympathy goes out to his family in the great loss they have sustained.

Born in China in 1887, he was at University College School from 1898 to 1906, when he entered St. Bartholomew’s Hospital to study medicine. He graduated M.B. B.S. in 1912 and was appointed first House Surgeon to the Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester, and afterwards House Physician to the Royal Free Hospital, London. On August, 1914, he joined the R.A.M.C. and after one week’s training at Woolwich was sent to France and became M.O. to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scots, with whom he shared the hardships of the winter, 19i4-15. For his work during this time he was mentioned in despatches. He was in Mesopotamia in 1916, where he had a bad attack of malaria. Returning to England he was married in January, 1917, to Evelyn, sister of his old school friend, B. H. Ellis.

In September, 1917, he again went to France, attached to the 7th Field Ambulance. On August 22nd, 1918, he was killed instantaneously by a shell.

Some time before this he had been awarded the M.C. “He searched for a missing stretcher-bearer for two hours under' heavy shell fire, at last finding him in a shell hole and assisting to carry him back. Throughout 9 days’ fighting he was constantly going forward under fire searching for and bringing in wounded.”

Dr. R. Brewitt-Taylor was an excellent photographer, being very careful and exact in all he did. He took beautiful photographs of mountains during his climbing holidays, mostly spent with his friend, Commander B. H. Ellis, who was also killed in 1918 (see separate biographical details).

In 1904. 1907 and 1909 Captain Brewitt-Taylor climbed in Danphiny and did the Grande Ruine.

Le president of Geneva Section Swiss Alpine Club:Bomond d’Arcis.

(Translation of Above Letter.)

Mr. President and my dear English Colleagues,The Geneva Section of the S.A.C. desires me to convey to

you its warm and sincere good wishes for the coming year. We earnestly hope that it may bring to you and to your country all the happiness that you can wish for.

We do not forget that your entry into the War was a decisive element in the great struggle whose end we now see in view, and that the fine effort of the English nation was one of the chief agencies that contributed to the splendid victory in the recent celebration of which we have also joyfully shared.

We know too that the British Empire rose like one man to defend the weak against the strong, right against brute force, justice against arbitrary power and falsehood, and that in this crusade the British people have bravely and generously shed their blood on behalf of the small nations.

You have won the victory and we shall never forget that you have saved us from the threat of German power, which aimed at absorbing our small nation in order to tyrannise over it. You have deserved well of mankind and in our hearts we are grateful to you for it.

To your dead, who have given their lives for the great cause of the freedom of the woTld, we offer the tribute of our grate-, ful respect and our deep admiration.

Your Association has lost many of its members, many of our colleagues and friends, andi it is these brave men whom we now especially bear in mind.

My dear English colleagues, may this new year see the fulfilment of all your wishes, and may you soon be able to revisit our mountains, to mix as brothers with those whose hearts havealways beat in sympathy with yours and have suffered like yours in the dark days of anxiety.

In the name of the Geneva Section of the S.A.C. I desire to convey to you. Mr. Bruce, and to my English colleagues, the assurance of our warm attachment and gratitude.

Egmond d’Arcis.

If the first year’s subscription and entrance fee is sent the candidate can be elected at once. If he wishes to obtain the full advantage of membership he should also enclose a small photograph of himself, this will be endorsed by our Treasurer and returned on his card of membership. If, in addition, he wishes to belong to our Association in England, the subscription is only 5/- a year or &2 2s. for life.

The Central Committee of the Swiss Alpine Club have cordially approved of the formation of our Society, and most of the British members have joined our Association.

• The subscription in English money varies slightly also wilh the rate of exchange.

ADVANTAGES OF BELONGING TO THE SWISS ALPINE CLUB.

Members of the Club obtain reductions on certain Swiss. Railway (e.g., half-price on Zermatt Railway) half-price at certain Huts; a RIGHT of entry at the Club Huts, instead of being there on SUFFERANCE; a fortnightly paper and monthly magazine in a French section free; the Jahrbuch, a well-illustrated Annual, half-price (6 francs), and other advantages. In a German speaking section the Jahrbuch is compulsory and included in minimum subscription, but the Echo des Alpes is extra.

A good feeling is created amongst the Swiss when they see British climbers, who use their Huts, contributing to their support by becoming members of the -S.A.C.

Club Hut Album contains pictures of all the S.A.C. Huts, and descriptions; it is issued as a supplement to Jahrbuch.

Informal Dinners (4/6) are held by the British Members at their Club Room, 136, Strand, W.C., on the 4th Wednesday in each month, except August and December, at which members who are interested in climbing meet and become acquainted with one another. Lantern slides are generally shown after the dinner.

INSURANCE OF GUIDES.The S.A.C. contributes one half the cost of insurance, if the

guide pays the other half.
