Early Revolts

• 1850’s – 1870’s– Indians distrustful of East India Company– British disrespect Indian leaders and citizens

• Revolts, though well believed in, not well organized

• 1876 – British begin to rule India directly

Direct British Rule

• India ruled by a Viceroy (Governor acting through the Monarchy)

The Good and Bad of British Rule

• Brings order and stability

• Fairly honest• Created a new

education system• Transportation and

postal system improved

• Education system only educated highest ten percent of population

• British made goods destroyed local businesses

• Farmers growing less food resulting in starvation

Indian Nationalism

• Indian National Congress– Not calling for immediate independence but

reforms– Problem – Hindu vs. Muslim Indians

• 1915 – Mohandas Gandhi practices peaceful resistance to British Rule

• 1947 – India granted their independence from Great Britain

• 1948 – Gandhi is assassinated
