    A UK success story

We are often told of the benefits that comefrom creating a greener economy and theadvantage that will come from being a firstmover. It is now clear that we dont need towait for these benefits. The UK has moved

and we are seeing the advantage. Our low carbon and environmental

sector has shown that its not just for thegood times, but that it has continued togrow steadily even whilst broader economicactivity slows.

This is the outcome of setting ambitiousenvironmental targets and creating longterm market incentives for green goods andservices. It has given the private sectorconfidence to invest billions of pounds inthese markets. In contrast, the UKs highcarbon infrastructure projects now havemuch lower leverage on private capital andare being propped up by greaterproportions of public spending.

The return on our investment ingreening the economy is being felt acrossthe country, with nearly a million people

now employed in providing low carbon andenvironmental goods and services, outstripping employment in other sectorssuch as telecoms.

Quietly and without fanfare, greenbusiness has become a UK success story, athome and abroad. We now export moregreen products and services to ourcompetitors than we import from them, andwe have become the green financing capital

of the world. This success should be celebrated. With

greater public recognition and strongerconfidence green businesses can helpsecure a faster and more resilienteconomic recovery.
