Welcome to the August 2001 issue ofBUFORA's magazine. Two events since thelast magazine were the successful mini-conference at Hampton on 24u June (whichunfortunately I had to miss), and theRendlesham skywatch organized by MalcolmRobinson. Read about them both in thisissue - the skywatch and the following dayswere not without incident. Sadly inclementweather and circumstances that can only beattributed to the Cosmic Joker spoilt theattempted Avebury skywatch!

The Rendlesham Incident itself shows nosign ol flagging in terms of interest, with evenmore information coming to light almost bythe week - Georgina Bruni's latest researchhas been covered in the lalest UFO Magazine.and it is clear that the web of deceit hiding thetruth is ever mor€ widespread.lls true thal we lre still no nearer to knowingwhat DID occur over those nights inDecember 1980, but certainly something ofconsiderable concem to the military and otherauthorities made an appearance in East Anglia21 years ago.For funher updates on the RendleshamIncident, l'd advise you not to miss theLondon Lecture on Monday 5'h November -see page 1l for details of the lectureprogramme.

On the subject of the Lecture programme-we would be very interested to hear from anymember in the London arca who feels thatthey could make the commitment to helporganize and run the lectures. If you rhinkyou can help, then please get in touch with us

The joittt TEMS/BA FORA/ASSAP ventureat Hamplon protes successful!

Prior to the main event. BUFORA was able toconclude successfully its postponcd AGM. Inthe absence of Brian James, Robert Digbytook the chair and S1€phen Gamble wasenlisted to take the minlltes.

Catering facilities arc almost non-existent inHampton on a Sunday, so volunteen fromTEMS provided an interesting bulfet lunchfbr BUFORA members. However well oneplans these events. there is always thcunexpected. Linden Hall's nsw caretakercould not locate the keys to the scrving hatchand help had to be summoned. Nor did weexpect the hall to be occupied by a cage ofchattering budgies! TEMS sumnrer eventsnotoriously coincide with good weather, and it,t'/^s bacon hot lhatparticular Sunday!

Philip Walton, ASSAP's Chairman. teamed upr\ ith Judilh Jrrlbr. BUFORA Vir'c-Chairrnanto welcome delegates to thc half-dayconfercnce at Hanrpton's large linden Hall. Itwas renlarked that the two organisations haveworked together infbrmally and that therewerc a number oi mutual members. They handcd over to Nick Pope, author ofOPLN SKIES, CL0SED MINDS,. who haddevoted time to examining the RendleshamForest UfO clar,lr case un,.J its implications. He not only knew the speitker but had writtenthe forward to her book. YOU CAN'T TELLTHE PEOPLE.

Nick related the MOD context beforeintroducing the lead speaker, Georgina Bruni.

She spoke about the people she hadinterviewed, some of whom had nolpre\iously heen in rhe puhlic lrenl. using cn

overhead projector for added context. One oflhe original investigators, Brenda Butler. waspresent in the audience. Brenda kindlycontributed to a photoSraphic display set upby Peter Henden. Ceorgina's talk will bcsummarised scparately, but during thequestion period she lold how the press launchfor hcr book, hcld in the Henry 8th undercrol't.part of the MOD, Whitehall, had been allowedto go ahead, but in fact was effectivelysabolaged by the MOD.

lf one believes in conspiracies then this hadbecn done deliberately! Ceorgina was verychufled at the end of her lalk to be presentedwith a large colourt'ul bouquet of tlowers, commenting that lhat had never happened at atalk betore!

After thc tea-interval and social break. JohnSpencer gave an entertaining, prollcient anderudite taik based around his recent book.GHOSTS, SPIRITS AND POLTERCEISTS,Volume 2. He and his wife Ann. haveattended sev0ral ASSAP vigils during thecourse of their rcsearch. Far too many authorswrite pot-boilers. whe.eas one knows that theSpen.ers hrre \isiled mrn) ol their locclion5personally.

lncluding the TEMS volunteers, nearly 70people attended this event, which was held ona very hot afternoon. It is perhaps a sign of thetimes. that while costs were covered and wemade a small surplus, a highcr attendance hadbeen anticipated.

Many people still remember JohnFrankenheimers excellent 1962 film 'The

Mattchurian Candidate', starring FrankSinatra and Laurence Harvey. This film is setjust after the 1948 Korean War and concernsan attempt by the North Korcans tot\sir\sinile a US politician using a

brainwashed former POw. The methods used

to carry out this 'brainwashing' ranged tiomthe brutal to the highly sophisticated, butmainly relied on disorientation, hypnosis andnarcotic drugs. On his return to the UnitedStates, the POW now a war hero rememberednothing of his indoctrination and could onlybe actilated by a special series of code words. These words were eventually given and thebminwashed lbrmer POW now operflingaccording to his conditioning, set out on hismission. Fortunately, he was thwarted at thefinal moment and the forces of the so-called'f.ee world' prevailed

This then was a scenario prevalent during thetime: people could be programmed by 114rco-,lr.\.lr,ro,ri,r' to do just about anything that was

required with a total disregard for self-preservation from spying to murder. It was a

belief not only conllned to the realms offiction, but also actively researched byclandestine groups such as the CIA in theUSA, and the KGB in the former USSR.Virtually sincc its inception in 1947, the

organisation, with the active encouragementol its original Jireclor Allen Dulles. using

data gathered during both the 2"d World Warand the Korean War instigated a series ofexp€riments, olTicially to counter Russianmethods of brainwashing. The real reason was

rather more sinister: its intention was an

investigation into the possibility of directmind control. This began in 1949 with'Project Articlrcke', proceeding through 'MK-DELTA', frnally culminating in the nownotorious 'MK-ULTRA'. The entireprogramme almost fell apan when, on the 28'l'Nov 1953, a Dr. Frank Olsen apparentlycommitted suicide by plunging to his deathfrom the l0'r' floor of his New York hotel.Olsen, a member of the US army's 'ChelricalCorps Special Operations', had, nine daysearlier, attended a meeting facilitated by thethen head of the CIA'S technical staff, SidneyGotleib where he had unwittingly consumed a

drink deliberately spiked with LSD. Cotleibhad acquired a quantity of the powert'ulsynthetic hallucinogenic drug and wanted toobserve at first hand its effects on a subjectwhen unknowingly consumed. FollowingOlsen's death. the entire affair wassuccessfully hushed up tbr twenty years byGotleib and CIA boss Duiles. There is nowevidence lhat due to fears of possiblerecriminations, the very group he wasassisting may have murdered the unfbrtunateOlsen.

Their pet project MK-ULTRA continued forseveral years with presumably the illegaltesting of various mind-bending drugs onunsuspecting members of lhe public. Thiscontinued until the then incumbent director ofthe CIA Richard Helms, (who himself took apersonal interest in the project), prior tolealing the post ordered all pap€rs relating toit destroyed. For various reasons not all thefiles were destroyed and some of them

emerged in the late 1970's. One of the moreshocking examples of clandestine evaluationthat came to light was canied out in a publiclyfunded drug rehabilitation facility inKentucky. At the urging of the CIA, thefacility director, Euan Cameron, suppliedcenain inmates with a range of experimentaldrugs including LSD, marijuana, mescalineand other substances. The 'reward' for theinmaEs' co-operation was a ready supply ofmorphine to feed their habits. These mind-altering substances were the forerunners in theproduction of so called 'designer drugs'.

The same facility and its director were alsoresponsible for a psychiatric technique called'Psychic Diving'. This was again carried outon unsuspecting prtients without their priorknowledge or consent. The procedureinvolved the use of a combination ofpowerful, experimental psychedelic drugs, hypnosis and sensory deprivation. The endproduct of these techniques totally wiped outthe personality of the recipient to the pointwhere they were reduced to the level of anewborn child. They had to be taught how toeat, speak, walk, write and use the toiletagain. When knowledge of this and otherillegal experiments leaked into the publicdomain it created a wave of justified publicoutrage and led to the CIA allegedlyterminating the project. The claim waseventually exposed as a sham. A CIAwhistleblower revealed that although researchinto narco-hypnosis was abandoned in 1963, anew series of experiment instituted into a

newer, more promising field, 'psychotronics' ,

or direct mind control by electromagneticradiation. Moreover, the reason narco-hypnosis was abandoned in the fiIst plac€ hadnothing to do with public reaction, butbecause it was not selective enough andtended to either limit the use of the subject orrender them completely useless, Fufther, inmany cases the damage was so severe, the testsubjects were frequently left as virtual

vegetables for the rest of their lives. We canbe certain that had the process beensuccessful, it would have remained active andsimply disappeared from view into theshadow world of 'black ' projects.

This series of experiments. the effectivenessof which we can only estimate, was the thinend of a very large and extremely dangerouswedge. The ultimate outcome of research intomilitary uses of electromagnstic radiation hasproduced almost unbelievable results. Someof them read like Science Fiction, and it isprobable that scientists currently working onthe projects do not fully appreciate theimplications of their work. what follows nowis a brief examination of a few of the results,in effect the children of the original MK-ULTRA, these may lead into some unexpectedareas.

There have been various schemes in the nameof national security dreamed up by thegovernments of many countries that haveverged on the lunatic. Their apparentdisregard for lhe well being of lhe indigenouspopulations and that of the planet is extrcmelyworrying. Perhaps the most recent example ofthis dangerous meddling is the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Project,(HAARP), which was bvih by the RaytheonCorporation, one of the US government'smain 'black' contractors, The aim of thescience behind this innocent soundingacronym is, quote, to "penurb" theionosphere with powerful blasts of microwaveenergy to "see how it responds to thedisturbance". What this innocent soundingdescription means, is that scientists are

attempting to burn holes in the ionosphere tocreate an artificial lens. which in turn shouldallow them to fbcus powerful bursts ofelectromagnetic energy at...what? Thisexplanation is only one of many, the othersrange from a communication system forsubmarines, a 'death ray' capable to knocking

aircraft out of the sky, killing aliens, brcadcastpower, enforcing the will of the 'New WorldOrder' which implies, yes, mind control.Whatever the real reason, former PrincetonUniversity Physicist Dr. Richard Williams hastermed the project "A,r irresponsible act ofglobal vandalism"

The Pentagon who will doubtless evaluate iifor possible military use like so many others, funds the experiment, which is located in a

remote comer of Alaska at Cakona, 140 milesnorth of Prince William Sound. For example, can it disrupt communications? Can it be usedto destroy incoming missiles? Can it controlweather? It would appear that this $70 millionproject is in essence an element of the nowallegedly defunct S.D.l - Strategic DefenceInitiative - better known as 'Star Wars'. Thisproject was a product of paranoia generated

by the arms race during the 'Cold War', andapproved by the Reagan administration to thetune of billions of dollars. With an end to theperceived threat of Russia's 'evil empire'there was little or nojustification for this levelof defence spending, especially on a projectthat many experts deemed, at best, horrendously complicated and at worst utterlyimpossible. The final death knell for the SDIsounded when the United States Congressrefused to approve full funding for the project.

The demise of the SDI was not an end to theproject, far from iq the idea is alive and well, continuing under the name of lhe 'BallisticMissile Defence Organisation'. Since 1995,funding has increased steadily to the level of$3.? billion: this is up from $2.8 billion priorto 1995 and is almost back at the peak reachedduring the 'Cold War'. The original conceptfot the SDI resulted irom several focusgroupsi amazingly, one comprised eight well-known science fiction writers. This group ofwriters was assembled with the purpose ofliterrlly dreaming up a method of preventingenemy missiles striking the soil of North

America, in effect creating a continent wideprotective umbrella. Once the concept wasdelivered it was up to the scientists andtechnicians to make it work based on theavailable level of technology. I suggest thatinstead of looking into the future for theirinspiration they looked a little way into thepast and the vision and dreams of one man, agenius named Nikola Tesla.

Many stories and myths have grown uparound this man and his inventions, one thingthat is true about him is the number of patents

in his name, and there are dozens of them. ltis a matter of fact that one of the pioneers ofradio, Marconi, used 14 of Tesla's patents inthe design of the tirst commercial radiotransmitter. Some of his ideas were so

advanced and visionary that they were lookedon as a form of black magic, the stufT of wayout science fiction. When he died in 1943, theUS govemment 'Department of Aliens'removed certain of his papers which in itselfis astonishing and of dubious legality, Teslahad been a naturalised US citizen for over 20years. No reason was given for the removal ofhis papers and notes, nor was the subjectmatter ever disclosed, although one of themost frequently whispered theories concernedthe existence of an alleged 'death ray'. Thisdevice may have been the particle b€amdevice that Tesla tried to sell to the USmilitary as an anti aircmft w€apon. If nothingelse, the idea was probably evaluated by theSDI and for all we know research actuallyfunded. It is known that a form ofelectromagnetic immobilising weapon is

already on lield trials. a device thai lires an

intense burst of microwaves at a vehiclecausing the engine to malfunction and stop. This happens when the microwaves interferewith the operation of the electronics in theengine management systems and effectivelybum out the components. Previously, iheproblem had been in concentrating andfocusing the emissions into a coherent beam,

BUFORA Magazine-August 2001-Page 8

Page 9: British UFO Research Association · London Lecture on Monday 5'h November -see page 1l for details of the lecture programme. On the subject of the Lecture programme-we would be very

evidently this problem has now beenovercome probably by means of field coilseffectively acting as a magnetic 'gun barrel'directing the microwaves at their target.

Some video footage shot during recent spacemissions shows what appears to be a brightobject approaching the earth's atmosphere. The object suddenly stops and shootsbackwards along its tralectory, then, aprojectile like beam of light appears from theatmosphere, streaking through the place

where the object had been only a secondbefore, Could this have b€en an example ofSDI in action and what was being 'shot' at?Whatever it was, it somehow sensed theenergy beam approaching - possibly bydetecting a shock wave of atmosphericionisation - and beat a hasty retreat. In itswisdom, NASA declared the images to bethose of ice crystals floating outside theshuttle's windows. This explanation is utternonsense as anyone who has seen the videofootage will agree.

The fficial erplanation for HMRP it that itk simply o research tool to give scientists abetter understanding of how the ionosphereworks. There are ofiicial US govemmentIntemet sites dedicated to making the prcjectseent friendly and harmless, The reality ishowever quite different. There arephotographs posted on the lnterhet of theHMRP antenna powered up and thesurrounding air 'glowing'. This seens to bedue to atmospheric ionisation caused b!electroma4netic llelds produced duringnormal operations. These indicate that thebroadcast power is of a considerablemagnitude. One can only hope that theradiation is being aimed skyward vthere, d itdoes not down aircraft, hopefully, the worst itcan do is barbecue ducks flying into hs beam.

Repoft gathered from people who have beenin the vicinity reveal a disturbing pattern

emerging regarding physiological symptoms. These include buzzing and humming noisesthat seem to originaie in their heads. Similarsymptoms are reported in various areas of theUSA and the UK. Humming and buzzingnoises, 'clicking' and high pitched whistlesthat seem to emanate from the air around theperson involved both indoors and out. Thisphenomena is sometimes called'microwavehearing' and is created when microwavescause localised heating of liquid within theears of those affected leading to expansionand contraction within the labyrinth of the ear.A refinement of this effect can allegedlyproduce direct voice contact in theunfortunate recipient. When a specificmicrowave wavelength is pulsed at a humanbeing, the body can be made to resonate andwhen a voice is superimposed on 0re

microwave canier, the person in the beam'hears' the voice in their head. Can youimagine the fear and terror that could becreated in, for example, a platoon of soldiers?ln all probability, they would think they weregoing mad and a rcpid breakdown indiscipline and morale would be inevitable

Only slightly less sophisticated is a verysimilar technique where an area of the brain, the lemporal lobe. can be affected causingf'eelings of anger, fear and panic. This wouldalso create widespread difficulties withmorale and motivation. lt is reported thatthese and other techniques were used duringthe Gulf War and in the Balkans. From thisuse of electromagnetic radiation, whichcovers microwaves, high ftequencies, Iowfrequencies and RF, it is almost certain thatthere is in effect a 'death ray'. A weapon thatcan kill with a minimum of fuss, silent andquile deadly, stopping brain functions, stopping the heart and paralysing theautonomic nervous system.

In the light of these cu.rent projects, it seems

fair to comment on the relationship between

There were two articles in the June 2001Bufora Bulletin that particularly interestedme. The first was the experiment inconducting an out of body experience, aphenomenon which I have been interested infor a number of years, but have yet toexperience in its entirety.

This article highlights two difficulties with thenotion of finding proof of the paranormal- oraliens if you take the 'spiritual beings' notionof them. First, there is the subjective natureof the experience. It is difficult to prove toanother person that such an event hasoccurred. If I said I had had an alienabduction experience, you can only judgebased on your understanding of my characteras to whether I might have motivation forlying or be susceptible to common delusionson the matter. (Not to say that I mighl not be

telling the truth as well!)

The idea of discovering objective facts wasmentioned in this article, uncovering thingswe could not possibly have known throughother means or have taken in subconsciously

through TV or reading.

The second difficulty is the fhct that there are

often two explanations t'br an event, thechoice of which you believe coming down towhether or not the idea of the paranorma)app€als to you. For instance, in this case, theexperimenter inlimates the inilial experiencesof this first session are the beginnings of a

more prolbund spiritual experience to bediscovered through later sessions. Yet,amongst the experiencers, those familiar withhypnosis are able to observe that a proceduremirroring that of hypnosis and visualisationwithin that state is occurring.

To further highlight this disparity , Iconsidered the second article that caught myeye, the one that asked the question: 'lsscience close to accepting ghosts?' (l think theanswer is not)

In this case, the observation had been madethat rooms within Edinburgh vaults whichwere reputedly haunted, were those wherethere was a higher incidence of the test

subjects reporting odd feelings. This is

an interesting observation, but it does notin itself prove anything. Here the twocompeting explanations are;(a) This happened because the rooms

are haunted.(b) This happened because the way the

room is, in terms of its shape, isolationrelative to public places, natural lightlevels. acouslic properties. etc. is morelikely to cause the stimulation ofpeoples' imaginations.

BUFORA Magazine-August 2001-Page 12

Page 13: British UFO Research Association · London Lecture on Monday 5'h November -see page 1l for details of the lecture programme. On the subject of the Lecture programme-we would be very

(This element ofimagination andsubjectivity is common toboth the articles)

One of the most imponantscientific principles to mymind is Occam's Razor, which as I understand it,states ihat if there are twoexplanations of equal meritthe explanation which issimplest is most Iikely.

Therefore in order to prove the paranormal wewould need to start looking for something thatis so impossible to dismiss, that a sceptic (Bywhich I mean a debunker, someone whowouldn't believe in alien spacecraft even if hecould climb inside one and shake hands withthe driver) would have no choice but toconclude that any 'more rational' explanationwould be more fantastic than the psychic/paranormal one.

What this probably means is the holy grail, physical evidence.

Of course, it is worth bearing in mind theimportant difference between seekingevidence ibr something you want to believe inand making judgements based on the facts.Sometimes it might be not that research needsa different direction, but our objective indoing it needs reconsidering.

Back to the beginning: The question of whatconstitutes proof can be also answered bylooking at what I accept as proof for everyday things. I know radio waves exist becausethey are the most logical explanation for howmusic and voices come out of my radio. In awider context, this is a scientific phenomenonthat has been deduced, the facts about itdetermined and more than demonstrated as

true by the use we have made of it for

communication and entertainment.

As an alternative then to solid evidence wecould deduce laws of a phenomena and makepredictions based on them. It', for instanceearthlights are caused by piezoelectric forces, can we guess where they might be likely tooccur in the same way we can make guesses

about when and where earthquakes mighthappen?

In the end, proof of the paranormal, of alienspacecraft may always be a matter of faith, Itmay be r question of how we want to perceivethings or what kind of world we want to livein. The world seems more magical for thepossibility that things like ghosts and psychicpowers exist. Without the spiritual, lif€ startsto look very mechanical, very cruel, viewedsolely in the context ofthe survival of DNA.

One final question you might think about is:how much does absolute truth actuallymatter? If the truth or untruth of a matter hadno effect on our lives. except on how we viewthe world, would it matter which way wedecide to believe? (Well, it would matter tome, but others can make their own choices)

These are just Eome oI the things I have been, hinking qbovt...

Rendlesham Forest in Sutiolk England is nowinfamous fbr a series of UFO events. whichoccurred near a United States Air Force Base(Woodbridge) back in the wintcr of 1980.Many USAF p€rsonnel were dispatched intoRendlesham forest to find out the cause ofstrange lights that were seen near the base.Clearly someone f'elt that these Iightswarranted a full scale Invcstigation and a

Colonel Charles Halt was also dispatched tofind out what was going on. The events ofthat night (and subsequent nights) has wentdown in British UFological history as a casc

Incredible as though it may sound, even todaypeople claim that there are still strange'goings on'in the skies above RendleshamForest, so rnuch so. tlrat a number of BritishUFO & Paranormal societies regularly go inlothe woods in hopes of a sighting. ResearcherBrenda Butler was one of the firstlnvestigators to brcak the story ofRendlesham, along with Dot Strect and JennyRandlcs. Brenda is still a regular \risitor toRendlesham Forest and wus more than keen toget involved with our SPI (England)skywatch.

I decided to organisc the skywatch atRendlesham Forest tbr two reasons, firstly, itwould help bring together all those UFOgroups that are scaltercd throughout thecountry to meel up and share expericnces. getto know one another. Secondly, the skywatch*ouLi be u good opponunity for lhose nut inUFOlogy (friends of UFO researchers ctc) tocome along and enjoy the evening. Theorganising oi Major UFO skywatches would

appear not to be a big thing in this countryhence I decided to change all that, I wanted tobring all the groups together and give them a

sense of purpose whilst having a night outwhen perhaps nothing would happen at all! This skywatch will be the first of manyNational UFO skywatches that I intend toorganise throughout the U.K. My intentionsare to hold these skywatches in 'UFOWindow Areas' or 'Hot Spots'where UFOshave beenregularly seen. Iintend to holdthese skywatchesin the RossendaleValley inYorkshire,Broadhaven inDyfed We stWales,Bonnybridge inStirlingshireScotland andother UFO 'HotSpots',

And so to get the ball rolling so to speak, Idecided that Rendlesham Forest in Suffolkwould be a good a starting place as any. Andso i[ was on the night of Saturday the 146 ofJuly 2001, myself and my paftner JudithJaafar travelled up to Suffolk t'rom Londonwith UFO witness and author Chris Mariin. The following repo is what transpired at ourskywatch.

THE RENDLESHAM TORESTSKYWATCH.

We arrived at our meeting place the ChenyTree pub just outside the village of Eyke on alovely clear night. I was having reservationsabout the weather prior to Saturday due to allthe heavy rain that most of the country hadbeen experiencing, still, the heavens had

cleared and it looked like we would have afine night for it. Looking around, I found tha!one or two other UFologists had assembled. We then all headed outside to the beer gardenwherc I gave a short introduction about why Iwas holding the skywatch and some generalinformation about SPI (England) I theninvited Brenda Butler to step forward andexplain about all the recent UFO sightingsthat had been recorded over the forest (which

there had beenmany !) She alsospoke about howwe should allrespect the forestand abide by thelaws set down bythe forestrycommission, ie,not to smoke inthe actual forestitself. Brenda setthe scene welland hearing allthese strange

recent accounts made one eager to set offstraight away to the forest. Brenda had drawna map of the foresr and separated it intosections where she and her colleagues hadwitnessed things, this proved most inter€stingand gave one an insight as to those actualareas where things had been seen. I theninvited Chris Martin the author of ""lntrudersIn The Night" and himself a UFOexperiencer, to come forward and explainabout how he planned to 'vector in' UFOactivity. It was one thing to attend a

skywatch, but when someone €laims that hecan make UFOs appear! Well that's anqtherstory. With the introductions over, it was

time to head off in convoy in our respectivecars to Rendlesham Forest.

Driving through the winding counhy lanes

brought back memories of our SPI

skywatches in Scotland where Bonnybddgewas the most popular destination. Afteraround 5 minutes we pulled up into a car parknear East gate in which we all gatheredaround and decided that our first port of callwould be the actual alleged 'landing site'where the remarkable events of that winter'snight back in 1980 transpired. Before wemarched off into the forest though, we did a

head count, any forest in the pitch dark can bea foreboding and inhospitable place andRendlesham Forest certainly claimed to be thetop notch in this regard. I counted 32 peoplein all (including mysell) which althoughwasn't too bad, was cenainly not as good as Iexpected.

As we all headed ofT through the darkenedforest, I looked up into the night sky and waspleased to see nothing but stars, there washardly a cloud in sight, absolutely perfectviewing conditions, (we couldn't have pickeda better night). Not only that, but there wasno wind, the area was completely still not abreeze or anything. This was a big changefrom my last visit when I was nearly blownoff my feet by the wind! Being in such a

controversial UFO 'Hot Spot'area made onefeel slighrly pensive (well it did mel) knowingthat at perhaps any minute something mightburst forth and scare the living daylights fromme, but again this was part and parcel of themystique of the place. People are drawn toplaces such as this, as they are to Avebury,Stonehenge, and the various other strangeplaces throughout Britain. After a short whilewe arrived at our first port of call the allegedlanding site where Colonel Charles Haltclaims to have encountered small grey'beings'. I wasn't surprised to leam that thereare three actual claimed landing sites. One ofthem being claimed by Larry Wanen (one ofthe original witnesses from 1980), the othersite claimed by Author and researcherCeorgina Bruni (from her own interviewswith witnesses) But what was the real one !!!

32 people crowded together in a small circularclearing around the Colonel Charles Halt siteand no doubt were casting their minds back tothat eventful winter's night of 1980. I wasfirst to break the silence and said, "/sr'l tii, tjust too small a space for what vas claimed tohave been seen that night to land here"!Brenda Butler replied that although the areawe were now looking at was indeed verysmall and confined. back in 1980 this areawas more open and as such could harbour thedevice as witnessed. As I stood in this area Ilooked around and everyone was silent andthoughtful no doubt trying to make sense ofthe claimed events of those particular nights. We spent around 15 to 20 minutes at rhissight, and later on I leamed that some peopleclaimed to have seen at this site, 'flashes oflight' in the sky. From there we headed offthrough the dark woods with our torchesbeaming around and lighting up the darknessbehind the many trees which enshrouded us.We eventually arrived at another claimed'UFO landing spot' which Georgina Bruniclaims is the 'real one' due to her extensiveresearch and interviews with witnesses to theevent (more so Vince Thurnkettle). Againeveryone was silent and contemplating whatmight have occurred at this ve.y spot on thatcold winter's night. I looked up at the sky, which was still a blanket of stars. wonderfulconditions. I then began to flash my torch onand off into the night sky as this function hadprovided other UFO researchers with retumedlight phenomena. but on this occasion.nothing. Just the stars and the odd satellitemet my gaze. It was early days however andwe still had the rest of the night.

After spending some time at this site, we thenheaded off to quite an unusual tree!! Brenda, who was doing a marvelous job of ensuringthat everyone rcmained close together in thewoods, then stopped at a tree and askedeveryone to look closely at it. It soon becameapparent what she was on about, for there as

plain as day, was what resembled an alien(more so that loveable character E.T.) I'msure I've seen a photograph of this 'face' inthe tree in one of the UFO magazines. Ofcourse it was just pure simulacra, butnonetheless it was quite comical! As wewalked away from this tree, someone pointedout some luminous worms or insects on theground, they seemed to charge in the brighttorchlight apparently they are quite commonto the forest. We then headed off to whereUSAF Airman Larry Warren, one of the keyplayers in this whole story, claimed the UFOevent occurred. A gentleman from theNorwich UFO society then pointed out theOrfordness Lighthouse in the distance, whichwas casting it's very soft and 'fainf glowaround. This was Capel Cr€en, where LarryWarren claimed the UFO came down, ofcourse there were many more trees aroundback then, the great storm of 1987 ended thelife of many a tree not only at Rendlesham butall over the U.K. as well, so obviously thearea that we were looking at was quitedifferent. The gentleman explained whathappened here and had a captive audienceIistening to each and every word under a

blanket of stars. Wonderful. After a while weleft this area and headed back off deep intothe forest.

It was at this point that someone wanted tomeditate and tune in and see what, if'anything' he may get. This was also an

opportunity for Chris Martin to ry and 'vectorin' UFO activity. The whole group (many

sitting) sat in silence, each with their ownthoughts whilsi two men, strangers to eachother sent their thoughts skywards. Scepticsof course will no doubt find this quiteamusing perhaps so (!) but at the end of theday this type of procedure has, allegedlyproduced things to happen at various locationsthroughout th€ world. Aft€r 20 minut€s or so,Brenda's dog began to get restless (l think shementioned that something spooked it!) andBrenda suggested that we move onto anotherlocation.

\,Ve then headed back off through the darkforest (believe me it was dark) when I realisedthat I hadn't seen one of our party for quitesome time, Being a big pa y, people weredropping back and talking to one another, getting aquatinted and so on and I thought thatthis was why I hadn't seen this chap, I won'tmention his name as I want to spare hisblushes (but how could you get lost!!). Imentioned this to Brenda and the others at aspot called the seat and the realisation that wehad lost one of the party sunk in and w€ beganto get concem€d, the last thing we wanted was

someone lost in the woods, especially afterBrenda had been given permission by theforestry commission and the local police forthis event to go ahead. However, soon afterthis I received a call on my mobile, it was themissing person, he had somehow found hisway to a campsite - which had a public phone(he didn't believe in mobile phones, he doesnow though!). Someone was dispatched to

Brenda took the party to other various sites ofinte.est in the forest, her extensive memoryaround the place certainly impressedeveryone, it did me, and without Brenda Iwould have been well and truly lost. Brendaof course, is well used to taking people aroundthe forest and knows the place like the back ofher hand. At all the various places westopped at, I personally never saw a thing, well, apan that is from one area where we allhad stopped and a number of us saw a lightmoving across the sky which flashed once andseemed to disappear, this could have been a

satellite though. Chris Martin failed tomaterialize any UFOS which was a

disappointment considering his successelsewhere. But I think for me, what was themost illuminating thing of the whole night, was when we were walking along one of theforest tracks with people moving their torchesthis way and that. Someone from the back ofour group show their torch to the front of thegroup above their heads and illuminated 2telephone cables stretching across the forest. Now when the torch hit these cables. it lookedlike a bdght light streaking across the sky as

the torch was moving along the cables. Atthis point afl we could hear \',/as a "Woooo"from the front of the pafty thinking they hadseen something mysterious, which of course itwasn't. But it was plain to see the power ofimagination.

The skywatch for me had been a success andalthough as far as I was concerned I hadn'tseen anything that I would deem myste ous, Ihad nonetheless enjoyed myself. Speaking toother people afterwards, it was plain to see

that they too felt the night had beenworthwhile, like minded individuals had metup, each of us sharing a common interest. Imentioned earlier that some people had seen

things. Let me now relate what Brenda Butler

herself experienced on this skywatch. From aIetter, which I received afterwards fromBrenda, she had this to say.

BRENDA BUTLER'S STATEMENT.

"l felt as thought the ni+ht went well, people

feh and saw dffirent things as we wentaround. I knew Ihat we were being watchedand followed (eyes in the forest). Everytimewe go down there this happens. We have seen(Brenda and Chris) /ille monk type figuresbehind us, we have seen shadotvs and E.T'swatching us- Rendleshant Forest holds greatnrysteries, '\ve' are the intruders down therenol 'them'. They have a ntessage for us.Soon we will have tlrc knolledge to v'ork it

Brenda also ne tioned in lrcr lener to me,

v:hat she herself had felt/sensed the niglt wewere in the forest, front her notes I take the

following.

(l) Colonel Halt's Sighting Place.

"Saw a flash of light across the sky. Wenormally see a flash of light when E.Ts areabout when they come fiom their atmosphereto ours. My dog was fine here."

(1) Georgina Bruni's Phce.

"Very peaceful. Saw litde red lights in andout of the trces behind everyone. This iswhere Peter and myself have had two and ahalf-hours of missing time and contact.Several messages have been given here. (Dogfinel'.

(1) Seal.Clearing.

"On entering the clearing behind the seat,

several people felt something had happenedthere. There have been figures seen there, little monk people and lights. Whilst there weall saw a white light travelliog across the sky, bright one minute, then dull the next. We see

these lights most nights we go down there. Alot of paranormal activity happens around thisarea. (Dog fine)"

(1) The Settlement.

"Once again little monk figures have beenseen around this area. Felt peaceful herg butknow we were being watched and followed as

always"

The above then are the thoughts ofresearcher and witness Brenda Butler. Somemight say that the above is purely fanciful(and they may be correct) but let us not losesight of the fact that we are dealing with thesomething which we technically know verylittle about. That some people the world overare giited in the sense that they 'see' thingswhich other people don't, is a fascination for

sure. They are not all deluded, just becausewe can't see what they see doesn't mean thatit doesn't exist (but then I guess the readerknows that.)

Brendc's friend Peter. who receivescommunication from'something' (!) Got theiollowing message whilst we were in theforest. This is what he got, make of it whatyou will.

Message To Peler.

"ln and out, two sides of time, our time isdif'ferent to yours. We have time in which wecan return, we need not to change our lives as

we are timeless. We live in two time fieldswhere we can keep in touch with your space. We need to feed off the energy of yourthought's and auras". "We have evolved tolive off energy given off by your world. Wemove around energy waves and come throughiots of portals. The writings are of'our' time, the signs are off'our' time."

"To explain who we are. we appear to you inall forms. We do not need to eat food, we livein a world of energy fields. We come intoyour world all over the place. Your livingkeeps us living. We need you, you need us toget into the future, world life will change foryou all too".

Well, interesting stuff indeed, but can we putany stock on it !!! Who knows!! Brenda alsomentioned to me that they are regularlycontacted down at Rendlesham Forest bySporo and Astrom!! I can't comm€nt on anyof this but all I can say is, "Who Knows"!!Some of the more other interesting things thatBrenda and her colleagues have witnessed/experienced in the forest is Jelly fish' type'things' appearing above the tree-tops, a

shange sound that came over a radio, brownshapes moving in the undergrowth andjumping up trees (!) and 'shape shifters' on

Another attendee of our skywatch wasresearcher Jac Sheridan (psydenom). Jacsubmitted his thoughts and feelings in regardsto the SPI (England) skywatch and I nowpresent his comments. Some may find thefollowing over the top and hard to believe, butlike I said earlier when discussing Brenda andPeter's thoughts, one must keep an open mindfbr if you don't then you are not beingobjective.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK (July 14rh) byJac Sheridan.

"At approximately 02:30am a vast glowingobject traversed the night sky heading East-West from the area of the original (LarryWarren) Ianding site direcdy over the formerUSAF Woodbridge base. The object wassimilar to a shooting star in aftitude andorientation but much bigger and brighter thanany shooting star could be. It dragged behindit a trail of light or possibly flame, whichrippled like waves upon the atmosphere. Theincident lasted about five seconds and waswitnessed by several people. Five minutespreviously Brenda Butler told us she had justwitnessed an object of identical descriptiontravelling along a more North-South axis."

Language In Siaccato Sounds.

Shortly aft this, three of us went into theforest a formed a meditation circle close toIany Wanen's landing site and isolatedourselves deep amoungst the trees. Wemeditated on and off for about an hourbetween 03:00 to 04:00 in the pre dawn.Shortly before daylight I was jolted from mymeditaiion by a sharp staccato sound. The

noise was rapid and sounded mechanical, yet'felt' organic like a footballers raule givingthe distinct impression of language or at least, communication as it seemed to fill the forestbehind us. As I made my companions awareof this, the same sound came back from theopposite side of the forest as though inanswer. The second member of my teamheard the sound quite clearly and claimed hehad received psychic impressions of a smallBrownish-Crey entity standing behind me, butthe third member of our group said she sawand heard nothing! Which seemed impossibleas it was all quite loud and clear. I havepreviously heard recordings made by others inRendlesham of a sound which although verysimilar, held a staccato rhythm quitenoticeably slower than the sounds we heardon the night of the I4'h."

Aftermath.

Two days later whilst I was receiving a topup charge from a psychic Chinese medicalpractitioner, I became suddenly aware of thepresence of an alien figure in the etherdirectly beside where I was lying. He lookedand sounded bizarre, striped like some kind ofmackerel fish, his face had high gills like miniwings and it's body was a mottled silver andred. My therapist also saw him and alsospotted another entity behind us. He then toldme that he could see a series of symbolstrapped in my aura revolving mostly aroundvariations on the shape of a lightning flash.The 'entities' seemed protective towards meand initially they interf'ered with his efforts totreat me as though trying to push him away.He said, and I quote;

.

"My energy system seenrs to be closeddown from the inside as though someone orsomething is protecting a project of theirown design"

"Eventually we managed to proceed

Danny was verystrongly affected by what he was sensing and

at certain times he seemed to be physicallyshaking. when we reached the cars on theEast-Gate car park we rcalised that 'ALL' ofthe batteries to the cam-corder had run downcompletely nat. This was very significantbecause Ros had only bought th€se batt€riesbrand new whilst enroute to the forest just 30minutes earlier and the camera had hardlybeen used. It was about this time we realisedsomething was going honibly wrong in thisplace on this particular night and we nearlyquit but instead we adjourned to the pub foran bour (but consumed only soft drinks)"

our respective return journeys which werequite lenglhy. This extreme fatigue is a

phenomenon, which has occurred with someof us on previous occasions. Yet despite myphysical depleted state I found upon retuminghome that my sleep was fitful and deeplydisturbed as I lay continually besiegedthroughout the remainder of the night bytenible nightmares more severe than anythingI have ever previously experienced, with eachof these dreams revolving around the commontheme of en€rgy loss and 'Vampirism'. AgainI follow through with a thorough examinarionby the same practitioner of Chinese medicinewhose professional opinion affirms that onlhis occasion I have indeed suffered a majorinexplicable loss of Meridian energy. So as Isummarise this account, I cannot help butwonder if whatever had drained the life out ofthose cam-corder batteries had tried to do

CLOSING TIIOUGHTS;

Many people come to Rendlesham Forest, each with their own thoughts, t'eelings andExpectations, there is no denying that theplace holds a certain 'something'. Mostrcsearchers and authors agree that waybeyond the principal Rendlesham ForestIncident, there were many unexplainableevents, which occurred there, and, as we haveseen above, are still occurring. We havelearned however that there are some peoplewho would appear to see things. which otherpeople do not! What does this tell us ! Aretheir visions real or are they all wishfulexpectant thinking! Sceptics would suggestthe latter. What we have to bear in mindthough is that there is no smoke without fire.Clearly an incident of immense proportionsoccurred at Rendlesham Forest back in thewinter of 1980. As a researcher into strangephenomenon the Rendlesham Forest lncidentstands as a major British mystery, admittedlylhere appears to be a lot o[ disinlbrmJtionwhich surrounds this case was that purposelydone to muddy the waters? Was the incidentnothing other than a new proto{ype aerialobject of our own which got into difficultyand overshot the Bentwaters runway crashinginto the forest and a UFO cover story put outto take the sting out of what it truly was? Or,as UFologists would have us believe, thistruly was a craft from somewhere else ofwhich it's purpose is unknown? At the end ofthe day the Rendlesham Forest mystery willprobably remain just that unless some newmajor and earth shattering witness testimonycomes to light but the UFO subject is neverusually that revealing and I can only hope thatwhatever the truth is that happened atRendlesham, will see the light of day

eventually.

The Northern Echo March 5,2001FOR 'OTHER DIMENSIONS' . TAKE

THE 86278

FORGET HC Wells and Dr Who, the answerto the mysteries of time travel may just liesomewhere along the 86278 near BarnardCastle.

For one of Britain's leading experts on UFOsxnd the paranormll has pinpointed the area inTeesdale, County Durham, as a portal to otherdimensions.Jenny Randles claims in a new book that timetravel can b€ explained through time storms -clouds of electric energy which suck peopleinto another dimension.

One of her most compelling pieces ofe\'idence relates to an incident near the markettorvn in I978. Mark Henshall, 16, was ridinghis motorcycle along the 86278 towardsEggleston late one night. Now a 3g-year-oldcorporate business manager, Mr Henshall tellsin the book, Time Storms, how he wasblinded by a bright purple light. Hismotorcycle seemed to be "pulled" up the hillby an unforeseen force. The shock was

compounded when he noticed 25 minutes haddisappeared, and all he was left with werebums on his body.

His experience was followed by an

unexplained sighting in nearby Cotherstone in1985. Engraver Michael Scorer, 52, ofWhitley Bay, was staying at a holiday cottagewith wil'e, Krth, when he had a similar vision.Mr Scorer said: "l saw an enormous brightobject moving across the sky in the early

hours of the morning which gave off this verystrange feeling of sadness. lt was not of thisworld."

Ms Randles claims the sightings are iust a fewexamples of hundreds around th€ world - butthat Barnard Castle could prove a centre forthe strange phenonenon. She said: "The incident near Barnard Castle isa very vivid and strong suggestion that thearea could be a magnet for this kind ofphenomenon.

Evening Times (Glasgow) March 1?, 2001Scottish X Files;Strange encounters that

won't go away

FOR most people an encounter with a UFO isa one-off event - but some have had repeatedcontact.Derek Lauder, of Aultbea in Ross-shire, has

experienced UFO and other strangeencounters all over Scotland. The first he canremember was seeing an angel at his bedroomwindow as a child. After that, tlre encounterscame thick and fast.

Derek said: "l lived in the village of Roslinfor seven years. And from my wooden cabinin the grounds of the remains of Roslin Castle,I saw many UFOs."l saw a one being chased by two jet aircraftand another slow-moving, multi -colouredUFO. "Then there was the UFO which lookedlike one object when you saw it with thenaked eye, but when I watched it through mytelescope was cleady llve separate objects."On another occasion I saw a beam of intensewhite light shoot down on to Roslin Castle

from an unseen source as I was walking backto my cabin. I decid€d to try signalling to theUFOS so I flashed my torch and someqneflashed back."

In 1979, Derck saw a black lens-shaped UFOwith two bright white lights like carheadlights which rose up next to the castle.Derek's experiences at Roslin supported theviews of those who believe the chapel there isa mystic centre of the world and may havebeen a landing site of ancient astronauts. Thearea is full of strange carvings. But Derek's own experiences are of a moreextensive nature. "l moved to Hoprig Mainsfarm in East Lothian and once again the UFOSwere there. And they were still flashing backto my torchlight. "l particularly remember thetime I saw two orange-coloured objects. Onewas brighter than the other. I watched as thesmaller object sped away from the larger one. They were over Fife heading south."

Now living in Aultbea. Derek is slill seeingUFOs. He added: "l have many goodsightings in this area and 'someone' is stillreplying to my torchlight."

Only Joyce Byers from Moffat can matchsuch UFO multi-sightings. In the 70s she hadhundreds.Joyce regularly saw a large spacecraft whichshe nicknamed Big Bertha because of therumbling noise it made. Another UFO wasshaped like an egg timer. As with Derek,Joyce was convinced that on at lsast oneoccasion she had seen an aircraft following a

UFO. The response of the UFO wasaggressive, flying directly at the plane andchasing it away.

Herald Express (Torquay) Apdl 19, 2001Keep your eyes on night skies

ANYONE who has seen mysterious glowinglights in Torbay's skies is wanted by a group

of investigators rcsearching UFO sightings.Torbay Investigators of the Paranormal wantto hear from people who think they have seena UFO in the area afrer several sightings werercported to them last year. Dvid Phillips, founder member of TIP, said the group wouldbe delighted to hear from keen-eyed skywatchers. He said: 'We are trying to see ifthere is a pattem to any sightings that mayhave occurred in Torbay.'Any help we canget from the public would be greatlyappreciated. 'We've had a series of reports ofUFOs near the Torbay Motel in Paignton.

'One man in particular has had severalsightings near there, the latest being Augustlast year.'He reponed seeing flashing lights appecringnear there and then taking off across the fieldsaround the motel. 'ln fact he has seen them afew times in that area. 'lt would b€ a greathelp to our research if anybody else withsightings got in touch with us so we can puttogether any kind of pattem.'ln fact if peoplewith an inte.est in the subject could keep asharp look out this summer it may turn upsome other sightings.

Away from UFOS the group is alsoconducting research into hauntings at BartonPines in Paignton. They held a midnight vigiltherc last Halloween seeking the ghostlywhite ladies said to inhabit the place, withsome interesting results. Mr Phillips said:'Wewere investigating reports of several sightingsof spirits at the pub.'One story concemed a ghostly lady said toinhabit a room in Barton Pines. 'She has beenseen sitting by the fire and has been namedGeorgette by locals.'There have also beenrepors of footsteps at night, when everybodyshould be asleep, heard by differentpeople .'We had one or two incidents on thenight and are now looking for anybody thatknows something about the history of theplace.

With Autumn days approaching I do hope allour memb€rs have enjoyed a long hotsummer. This certainly has been reflectedwith many people out and about and lookingup into warm blue skies for some sign ofunidentified objects, so sighting rcports havebeen increasing during the month of August, which has genemted an escalation in mediaand press interest in the subject particularly inthe wilder claims of UFO encounters.

Ar the time of writing (August 29th) therehave been close to one hundred reports made

to BUFORA and once again a majority ofthese are observations of perceived unusuallights in the sky some of which have beencaused by the usual culprits of aircraft, astronomical phenomena and laser lightshows. Venus is still very visible for severalhours b€fore Sunrise as is Jupiter and dudngthe early part of the August both Jupiter andVenus were in a rare conjunction in the Eastbefore dawn creating several reports toBUFORA and described as moving up anddown, possibly an optical illusion whilstwitnesses stared at these bright planets over a

period of time. Meteors have also createdseveral of these rcports and of course thePerseids Meteor shower in August triggered afew reports.

One of the problems that investigations areexperiencing is the lack of follow up of emailreports to BUFORA enquiries. I r€spond to

these where there are enough details to assess

their sighting, but if this is not the case, thewitness is sent a questionnaire for completionto collate all details of their sighting. To datefrom the beginning of this year thirty of thesequestionnaires have not been retumed, whichmeans we have only very brief details of theirsightings and of course therein lies a problemand denies investigations any form ofassessment or follow up. It is easy to report a

sighting on the net, but it appears that interestdiminishes at the sight of a form to becompleted! Letters to BUFORA have alsoresulted in a lack of follow up via the witnessonly at a lower level than email reports.Telephone calls result in more informationbeing obtained, as investigators can elicitmore details about the sighting, Neverthelessthe lack of follow up on the pan of thewitness diminishes the ability of theinvestigator to investigate in any definitiveway. Thus it has always been, but th€ lack ofresponse appears to have increased over thelast couple of years.

On the internet debates continue to rage withregard to the Rendlesham Forest incidentsfrom 1980 particulady with the publication ofGeorgina Bruni's book on Rendlesham YouCan't Tell The People, and new files andrevelations have emerged recently to supportvarious theories about really happened inRendlesham Forest in 1980.

To steer away somewhat from themore mundane reports of unusuallights in the sky in this diary I am.ecording several curious reportsjone which dates back to 1992 andwhich was investigated by JudyJaafar and the late Ken Philips.

Strange Events in Tyne & Wear

To begin, however, I want to recorda report we received from a ladyfrom Tyne and Wear. This wasoriginally reported to Judy Jaafarvia telephone during the latter partof July, when the lady concernedAL contacted Judy with a bizarretale regarding some photographsshe has taken. The llrst photograph was takenat Madame Tussauds over one and half yearsago. She said she saw nothing at the time oftaking the photograph, but only after havingthis developed (This maybe a ctue in itself). She describes the f'ace on rhis photograph as a'non.hurnrn. ghastly. red-eyed and $ith a ringthrough its nose. She also claims to have seen.nd photographeLi a little girl's fcce appearingthrough the walls of her house.Since taking the original photograph sheclaims her life as been in uproar and thatsomething throws ornaments at her boyfiiendand kitchen knives around the house inaddition to doing things of a personal natureto her!

AL claims that she has had a priest in to blessthe house and that things calmed down for a

while, but have recently started again wirh avengeance and because of this she has boughta.crucifix tbr protection. ludy passed thisinitial report on to me and my colleagueconlacted her and forwarded a quesrionnaircwith a request for the photographs andoriginal negatives. These had not arrived twoweeks on cnd consequently lhave been in

telephone contact with the lady, who lives in County Durham. Shehas intbrmed me that she hasmoved to a different house in thesame street due to modemisationwhich is taking place and that this'poltergeist activity,' as she refersto it, is continuing and that herboytiiend has been a witness to it.She will be sending a report onthese incidents to me togetherwith the photognphs she has

taken.

Initial Conrments:Af-ter speaking with rhe ladyconcerned. I found herconversation to be fiagmented and

somewhat conflrsed \\ ilh discreprnciesregarding these events, some of which did notconfirm information she had given to Judycnd my colleipue in Newca:.tle. I plan to wairfor her reporl flrd thc photographs to arrivebefbre I proceed with following this up withan interview in order to establish morepersonal and background information in orderto assess the issues involved in this case. Ihave just received a written report fiom herthis morning and she has moved house, although this was not due to these incidentsand apparently poltergeist activity iscontinuing and alarming her to quite anextent. More on this in the next issue of theBulletin. Note here that there is no UFOcontent involved.

A Strange Incident from 1988

At the beginning of this year BUFORAreceived a letter from ML relating to an

incident that occurrcd on the M54. Thetrigger for this report was Philip Mantle'sbook Without Consent and ML recounts thefollowing tale...

BUFORA lVlagazine-August 2001-Page 27

Page 28: British UFO Research Association · London Lecture on Monday 5'h November -see page 1l for details of the lecture programme. On the subject of the Lecture programme-we would be very

'lt was the end of September in 1988 and Ihad bought a new motorcycle, which I wantedto try out for speed, In the early evening Iwas on the M54 heading into Telford from theM6 interchange at Junction loa. The skywasdark and there were a few, but not manyclouds. Visibility was good.

After Junction 2 on the M54 westbound, I sawno cars or police, so I decided to go for itbetween the junctions wherc I could be certainthat there wouldn't be much interference. Thebike in question was a Yamaha FJI100 and as

I started to roll it on, I sensed an object aboveme and to my right. I didn't look at that pointbecause I was going pretty fast and myimmediate thought was that it was a policehelicopter. I slowed right down to get aproper look and as I did so, the object slowedwith me and remained in station relative tomy speed as if it were solidly connected. When it was safe to do so, I looked at itdirectly. At this point, the motorway was notilluminated, but the object was above thecentral reservation just about where the topsof the light would b€ if it were an illuminatedstretch of motorway'

ML has drawing a small illusration of theobject, which he describes as 30-40 feet longand 20 feet wide with a flat tail and very mattblack underside and senated edges at analtitude of40 - 60 feet.

He continues---

'lt was solid and I couldn't see the top. It wasvery black, much darker than the sunoundingsky and there was no sound at all that I couldhear, no smell and no lights on it.

I was surprised and remember trying to workout where the tail boom was because I stillthought it was a helicopter. Bear in mind thatI've always had an interest in aviation and

have seen and flown in various choppers atmany air shows,

After gawping at it, I worked out that thiswasn't anything that I could recognise so Istarted to feel a bit nervous, I was stilltrundling along at not more than running pacelooking at it, so I decided to just try to getaway from it. I rcmember clearly doing 142mph on the bike. The object stayed with me, Icould sense it and when I tumed my head a bitI could just see the darkness of it. I slowedright down again in panic because speedwasn't working, then the thing moved in frontof me, crossed to my left and then went acrossthe fields until the horizon camouflaged it.

There was another person there as I hadcaught up with a car and I pulled in front of itto gesticulate at the fields. The car slowedand I remember the bloke sticking his thumbup through the windscreen at me. We weredoing 20/30 mph at this time. I got off atJunction 3 and did a U-turn and went sraightto my fiiend's house to tell him. I sawnothing strange on the way.

In addition I can tell you this. I know of noaircraft that can keep perfect formation with afast accelerating motorbike, nor one that istotally silent. There was no rotor draught andno smell of exhaust fumes. I know that RAFCosfod is not far away and I have a feelingthat the UFO I observed was military orsomething exp€rimental, but why it was thereI don't know'....

An interesting feature of this case is that therehave been several reports from this area overthe years repofling unusual tralllc in the skies.one of which was investigated by BUFORAAI Dave Pointon and occurred in December1996, There were unusual lights observed bytwo men travelling on the M54 in the samearea as the report from above, They describeda triangular matt black object with a dome-

shaped light in the centre. This object wasabove them on the motorway and then movedoff to the left and their observation time wasaround two minutes. According to the twomen involved they suffered physiologicaleffects, which they related to their sighting, extreme tiredness and sickness. Of course ithas to be said that this may have been a

coincidence and the physical effects wereprobably independent of their sighting. Acouple of days after this sighting one of themen, MM contacted RAF Cosford andclaimed that the receptionist there infbrmedhim that she has observed the same object sixmonths prior to their sighting. He then wasput through to a military policeman, whoseemed to know what he was describing, butinformed him that RAF Cosfbrd's ATCclosed at 5.30pm and no aircraft traffic wouldhave been present there after this time.Several days later Mr. M. received twotelephone calls from an unknown sourceasking for further information on this sightingand then received the standard MOD letter.

In conclusion, it would appear that this was a

military vehicle and it is interesting that MLremarks in his letter to BUFORA, that afterhis sighting he shned reading a lot ofIiterature on UFOS and about a year afterwardcomments that he had problems with his teethand eyes and staned having strange dreams ofa UFO nature etc. and goes on to say thefollowing

'l doubt if ail this is related to be honest, probably lired by too many books on thesubject!!!'

This is a very honest and pragmatic commentand one which. although mundane. is verysignificant, and illusrrates how often a fairlybanal sighling can generate a problem, wherea witness cannot identify an object or a light, and go on to actually sutfer physical effectsdue to fear and powerf'ul UFO imagery

downloaded into their consciousness, so theycan genuinely feel they have seen somethingthat could not be of earthly origin. This issomething that investigators are very aware ofwhen they assess a report.

REALITY TILT AT HOCKLIFFE

The following case study was investigated inOctober 1992 by Judy Jaafar and the late KenPhillips and is a very significant study inrelation to claims of alien abducrion, oddmists and missing time experiences. Whatfollows is based on Judy Jaafar's transcriptand comments about the investigation

The Bellamy (pseudonym) family weretravelling by car from Dunstable to MiltonKeynes on Saturday 8th August 1992 at10.30am. The weather was dull, cloudy andhumid. but not raining, The family were in a

good mood and rhe children were singingBeatles' songs in the back. Mr. Bellamyremarked that his daughter was "murdering"the song. Just prior to this, Mr. B. hadswerved to avoid a car driving straighttowards him on the wrong side of the road atthe Hockliffe junction. Both parentsmentioned this more than once, as if it wereimportant. Perhaps there is an underlyingsignificance.

They continued on up the hill after Hockliffe, and found themselves in a sudden torrentialdownpour. which they bolh felr was in someway unusual. At this point a bank of mist orfog suddenly appeared in front of the car(Mrs. B did not see this) and the husband hadno option but to drive straight into it. Onbeing asked by me whether he had seen themist from some dislance, Mr. B. said no, andthat it had just suddenly appeared and that itextended all around them. Everything wasquiet at this point and there was no othertraffic around (unusual for this road on a

Saturday moming - Ozfactor). They have nomemory of drivingthrough the fog, or ofcoming out of it.

Their next memory is ofdriving through woodson the outskirts ofWoburn Sands- Theyboth recollected that atthis point Mr. B. had

tumed to his wif'e andremarked that they werein "Aslan Country".Perhaps this was a

conscious expression ofan unconscious feelingon Mr. B's part thatsomehow reality hadshifted, as happened to

the children in Namia. (The Lion, The Witchand the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis).

Mr. and Mrs. B. remember nothing after thisuntil they drove into Woburn Sands itself, about one mile further on. They both thenremarked on seeing a road worker in brightyellow doing something at a manhole cover, and then seeing two white cars with brightheadlights pointed at them. manoeuvring.Ken asked them if they felt there was

anything unusual about this, but both said no.However, this particular small "normal"incident was discussed at least four timesduring the interview and I feh at the time thatMr. B. particularly was puzzled by it. Couldit be a'tover-memory" and that in lact the

witnesses did not retum to reality briefly inWoburn Sands?

By this time almost eight miles of theirjoumey had been lost (fifteen minutesapproximately). They had missed Woburn, the railway crossing at Woburn Sands and avery busy garden-centre, all familiar

landma*s to them.

After their brief memory of Wobum Sands, there was a further blank period which lasleduntil they rcached the Fishermead roundaboutoutside Milton Keynes, where they stopped tofill up with petrol. Mr. B. remarked that whenshe "came-to". her husband seemed to bedriving very fast toward the roundabout but atthe same time didn't seem to be actuallydriving the car. He also maintains that he feltlike he was on autopilot, but that hisawareness was elsewhere. He remarked atthis point that they hadn't gone over the"bumps", humps in the road, which thechildren liked to go over quickly to give thema funny feeling in their stomachs.

They pulled into the p€trol-station at10.50am., twenty minutes af'ter the start oftheir joumey, which is the normal time itwould have taken. Both adults at this pointexperienced icy-cold tingling in their heads, necks and shoulders, which was decidedlyunpleasant and uncomtbrtable. When Mr. B.got out of the car, he found his co-ordinationwas awry, and had great difficulty inunscrewing his petrol cap and inserting thepump nozzle. Mrs. B, couldn't find the doorhandle to get out of the car.

Both adults were feeling peculiar, and "knew"that something srange had happened to them,They realised that they had missed majorf'eatures on the thmiliar journey. They droveon into Milton Keynes, wondering why theyhad come there. The people around them look"funny". Mr. B. in the transcript says that herhusband remarked that all he could see werefaces coming towards them. During theinterview in a part which was not transcribed,Mr. B. said that lhe people looked funnybecause he could see no taces, and it appeared

that everyone was walking away from himwith their backs towards them . Does thisdiscrepancy have any significance? Mrs. B. at

this point speculated that theyhad been taken away on a

flying saucer. All the familyseemed to be behavingslighdy out of character, especially the youngestdaughter who was unusuallyquiet (5 years).

They decided to cut sho(their outing and come home, because they were feelingdisturbed. The l'eeling ofunreality persistcd on thereturn journey, and Mrs. B.actually wondered if they hadalldicd and were ghosts. She

half'-expected to t'ind their carin a ditch on the way back.

The children haven't played nruch part in thestory so far, but on the way back the motherdecided to question thcm. On asking themwhat Mummy and Daddy had been doing allthrough the journey, the children replied thattheir pareots had been totally silent, something very unusual - except for a remarkabout "Aslan" and about "a man in the road".This silence had lasted for eight miles (15-20minutes). The parents also noticed that thechildren uere unusuully quiet. no bickering orsquabbling and one of them complained ol a

headache. The children maintained that theyremembered the whole joumey, including the"bumps", but when I specifically asked aboutthis. Mrs. B. stated that she didn't believethem! Unfortunately we had no chance tospeak to the children.

There was another sudden min shower atexactly the same spot on the way bdck.

On returning home, they immediately went toMrs. B's mother to relate their experience andto confirm that they were "real".

That night there was a terrificelectrical storm. Continuouslightning went on all nightwith little thunder and no rain.

The family retraced theirjoumey the next day (Sunday)in an effort to make sense ofit, and in fact have done soseveral times. Also onSunday, Mrs. B. noticed a redmark like a bum on the backoi her neck. lt was diamondshaped and about one inchsquare. It was painless. ltwas seen by her mather and a

friend, and remained visiblefbr about one week. Alsoaround this time. Mr. B.

noticed a fairly large square-shaped red areaon his abdomen. It was an outline rather thana solid patch like his wife's. The mark wasstill visible, but faded, at the time of theinterview. Interestingly, at no point duringthis whole experience did the wirnesses feelany fear, only puzzlement and disorientation.

Mrs. B. was completely pre-occupied by theexpedence for several days, to the extentwhere she lblt she was neglecting herhousehold duties. She also suffered fromsleep-onset insomnia. Mr. B. recovered fromthe experience more rapidly, but wassufficiently affected at the time that he (notMrs. B.) tried to reporL it that sxme evening.

Witness Profile collated by Judy Jaafar

I have very brietly summarised Judy's writteninvestigation and notes on the backgroundproflle to this case and this follows below...

Mr. B. had never had any other strangeexperiences, but was obviously considerablyaffected by this one and was instrumental inobtaining phone numbers to report this

BUFORA Magazine-August 2001-Page 3l

Page 32: British UFO Research Association · London Lecture on Monday 5'h November -see page 1l for details of the lecture programme. On the subject of the Lecture programme-we would be very

incident. Both parties had the "peculiar"feeling once in a while that they shouldn't be

telling anybody about this and that theyshould drop the whole thing. Judy felt thiscould be significant ibr various reasons, which are rcfened to later on, Mr. B. hadlitde or no interest in UFOS or the paranormaland did not read any literature, but admits togaining some knowledge of the subjectthrough listening to his wife's views on the

subject.

Mrs B. presented a very different profile and

Judy believes that the whole experience is

centred around her. She had also had a

number of strange psychic experiencesthroughout her life, She freely admitted thatshe is interested in UFOS and has many bookson the subject. ln her report Judy wonderswhether the interest is a result of herexperiences or could lhe UFO encounters be aresult of her interest? Mrs. B. wasparticularly fascinated by the'Janos People'and showed the book to Judy and Ken,therefore Judy asks whethq it was a just a

coincidence that she had visited the site of thiscase only one week before the Hockliffeexperience and whether this could have

triggered something in her mind?

Although it appeared that Mrs. B. was lookingfor an explanation for her experience, Judystrongly felt that she believed she had beenabducted and was hoping for them to suggest

using regression hypnosis.

Judy also comments that Mr. B. was frank and

open about the experience, genuinely puzzledbut ready to laugh. In addition to this he was

very open to finding a non-exotic explanationfor his experience and asked if there wereother people in the same situation. He was

interested in Judy's comments thatatmospheric conditions on that day could be

an important factor and that most of what theyexperienced could have been the result of

their being exposed to an ionisedeleciromagnetic field and that the bank of mistand the phenomenal electrical discharges ofthat evening could well be imponant, although this would not explain th€ marks ontheir bodies.

ln her profile, Judy has examined thepsychological aspects of this case and whilstshe accepts that all the evidence sugg€st thatthis experience was very real particularlyregarding the physical traces on their bodiesand the intdnsic strangeness of the case, she

also explores the possjbility that Mrs. B was

actually instrumental in creating thisexperience in that she was hoping forsomething to happen and it did happen - toher husband as well.

Footnote:

An interesting addendum to this case study isthat Judy Jaafar met up with Mr. & Mrs Bagain during the time she facilitated theWiiness Support Group (WSC) together withKen Phillips in 1993. On the first occasion inMarch 1993 Mrs. B. reported havingnightmares and "funny feelings" in addition towhat she perceived as an unusual observationon the same road. She also remarked thattheir youngest daughter had recently beenseeing shadows in her bedroom and on thestairs at night. Judy remarks that it would bedifficult to judge how much of this is 'real'and how much it maybe the product of theimagination of a sensitive child, who has

possibly overheard snippets of discussionfrom her parents.

In September of 1993 Judy had theopponunity to meeting up with the B's once

again at the WSG and Mrs. B. discussed som€

further strange occurrences that had been

happening to her. Once again these includedstmnge and disturbing dreams, some of themprophetic and some of them with a UFO/

spaceship theme. Her daughter had been sickfor some time in February and had eventuallybeen sent home from school. Her teacherswerc rather concemed about the pictures shehad been drawing of funny people withpointed ears, Judy poinrs our that lhis maynot be significant as imaginative eight-year-olds draw f'unny pictures. Mrs. B. alsodiscussed an old photograph with a srrangetace on it. This was taken in 1983 outside aholiday home, where she experienced somevery frightening events. She mentioned thatthere were new faces appearing on a ten yearold photographic print. This has not beenverified, although Judy and Ken did see thephotograph at the time of rheir initialinvestigation and could discern a peculiarfeline face in the foliage oi a tree. However, this could most certainly be a trick of the lightand shade and just an optical anefact.

Conclusions

Obviously rhis case cannot be d€finitivelyevaluated and this €xperience was a subjectiveone for both Mr and Mrs B perceived in theirown way, but certainly something occurredthat they could not understand or explain andso moved them to contact BUFORA in thehope of trying to identify what happened tolhem on lhe road that day. This experienceturned their lives upside-down particularly forMrs. B who has searched for an answer to thisexperience for many years. Jenny Randleshas documented this case in her excellentbook Time Storms, which examines the natureol time and space, collating some of thestrangest cases from around the world. Sheshows remarkable parallels where witnessesreport encounters with mysterious mists, which produce a sequence of missing timephysical and physiological effbcts. Thesemists app€ar to interrupt the witness'perception of the flow of rime producing aneffbct of 'timelessness' where all familiarsounds cease and an unnatural stillness

prevails. As a witness told me in 1995 it waslike 'one step below silence'.
