In Summer 2013, I interned with Tantrum Street a start up technology business that developed two applications. Cartwheel Register, one of the applications offers a mobile register for the business and Skip wallet offers a mobile way to pay for consumers.

In this position I created email campaigns, which consisted of different pictures and stereotypical formats of an email promoting the apps, welcoming new customers, informing the customers of updates etc.

For the pictures in these emails I used Photoshop to place hands with IPhones or IPads in different shops or locations in which these apps would be used. I had to use pictures of the app and place them on the screens because the app is not released yet.

At Flash Photography I used Photoshop to fix graduation pictures. These pictures needed lighting fixes, blemish removals, green screen removal, etc. Because they were graduation pictures only accessible to the company I cannot share the pictures

here.

7

At the University of Oklahoma I have had the opportunity to expand my Photoshop skills and really work on advertisements. In Ad Copy and Layout I had to create ads for certain assignments and below are a couple of my examples.

Conformity

During passing period the long cold hallways of high school are filled with

whispers and laughter. As I walk down these halls I can see some girls’ faces standing

near my class with piercing eyes and cold glances. When I enter my class I wonder what

they were thinking or talking about. My head is then flooded with all kinds of ideas.

They’re talking about me, or they were talking about my clothes or they were talking

about my friends. It consumed my mind for the whole class until the bell rang; I came

back down to reality and walk to my next class. As I make my usual way to class I find

myself looking at all the kids walking past. It’s almost as if we have a uniform. All of the

girls had similar outfits on, the same hairstyles and the same purses. The guys all had the

same sort of look, similar mannerisms, and similar backpacks. There are only a few that

choose to stand out, but for the most part everyone looked the same. Our high school,

even neighborhood, is usually referenced as “the bubble”. Everything inside this bubble

is safe, familiar, the same. So when some kid punches another inside this bubble it seems

as if this protection, this shield is breaking down. Outside of the bubble at other high

schools or in other neighborhoods violence happens so often that it’s the norm. The

environment that you live in makes you who you are, it conforms you to be just like

everyone else in it.

Conformity is a big issue inside the bubble. Sometimes I just want so desperately

to fit in that I focus on that so much that I lose track of what is really important. This

10

Page 11: Brittany fersing portfolio

society causes a lot of pressure to conform into something that you’re not. Everyone is so

competitive with each other whether its looks, grades, sports, or even who’s got that

special someone. If someone doesn’t have these things they are looked down upon or

made fun of. These are the things that eat at me every day. With my looks I try not to get

those cold stares, the ones that say ‘what are you wearing’ and even try to fish for

compliments from other girls. Grades are very important to me and in this community,

where almost everyone is smart; it’s sometimes hard to keep my head above water. Since

this community is a dog-eat-dog community, all we do is look out for ourselves. When

our chance at conforming into someone who we think we want to be comes, we tear our

real friends down. Personally to me conforming into someone who I’m not by ruining

others lives just isn’t worth it to me. Sure I’ve gossiped about my friends while talking to

people I want to be friends with but taking that a step further can cause real damage.

Conformity to me has a lot more negative than positives. While conforming into someone

you shouldn’t be it can cause countless amounts of problems. The best way to fit in is to

just be whom you’re set out to be not to be who someone else wants you to be. Pretty

soon you won’t even know who you are anymore and when this happens it usually spirals

downward .I had a friend who used to be so against drinking that she hated the people

who did. As time passed she eased up to it and eventually started drinking herself to get

the attention from some guys. In the process she ended up losing me a friend, her

schoolwork dropped, and over time she just didn’t really care that much about anything.

Her parents finally found out and punished her for a long time. Once she was able to go

out again she tried to hang out with my friends and I but she had hurt me so much that I

couldn’t take her friendship back. She ended up with almost no friends, and in those

11

Page 12: Brittany fersing portfolio

friends I don’t know who truly likes her for who she is. Conformity turns good into evil.

It takes your morals and rips them right from under your feet until you don’t have any

anymore. My environment has turned me into someone who I’d never thought I’d be

going into freshman year. It took me and shook me till I finally popped.

We all make stupid mistakes but some will change you for the rest of your life. I

know with time wisdom comes. I know more now then I did in middle school. I even

know more now, than I did last year. With this wisdom, comes the determination not to

allow the fear of man to rule my thoughts and actions. I would like to make decisions that

are worthy of the cause, not worthy of making someone else happy. If I were to stop

thinking about these little issues, it would make my day less stressful and help me focus

on the more important things in life. Conformity is an issue that is all in our heads. My

goal is not self-centeredness; my goal is to appreciate the abilities I have and also to work

through my mistakes or shortcomings, without worrying what people think.

Verdict Story

OKLAHOMA CITY—There was hardly any emotion shown on Davion Pollard’s face

when he was found guilty of the murder of Jerry Clark JR. and the conspiracy of

robbery and given life in prison with a fine of 5,000 dollars. Pollard along with 3

other men were tried on accounts of murdering Clark and the conspiracy of robbing

him.

Davion Pollard otherwise known as “Little Shorty” is associated with the

“Neighborhood 90’s“ Crip Street Gang, which has “claim” over the neighborhood

where the victim was shot. Clark, dressed in an orange shirt and an orange bandana,

12

Page 13: Brittany fersing portfolio

had no affiliation with any gang but was wearing the wrong color in the wrong

neighborhood.

Clark was visiting his Aunt, Mary Mason, at her house where he also receives his

mail. Mason said Clark left her house and was walking to his car parked in her

driveway. As she closed her front door she began to walk away, she heard gunshots

from outside her house and dropped to the floor.

Clark’s car came to a stop outside of Mason’s house as she dialed 911. Witnesses saw

four black males running through the streets after the shots were fired in the same

area. Investigators found fingerprints on a Chrysler 200 that led the police to one of

the defendants, Tommy Long.

Tommy Long’s confessions led to the police to find the other defendants Davion

Pollard, Sean Anderson and “Chase”. Long stated that the victim was known to be a

drug dealer and would have a lot of cash they could rob from him. They waited until

Clark got into his car and approached him while pointing their guns at him. Clark

refusing to get out of the car begins to back out of the driveway as Long and Pollard

shoot at his car.

Days after the homicide Pollard was arrested by Del City Police Department and was

armed with one of the 9mm firearms, used at the crime scene, during the arrest.

Pollard was caught from speeding while driving, which then turned into a case that

led the Del City Police to the Oakridge Apartment complex.

After long investigations and questioning the jury found Pollard guilty of the murder

of Jerry Clark JR. and guilty of the conspiracy to rob him on Friday, March 15th, at

3:30 pm. As Pollard was handcuffed and taken out of the courtroom he begins to

13

mumble angrily to himself, finally showing emotion. Sentencing is set for

Wednesday, April 3rd, at 9am.
