Náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square)Náměstí Svobody is the natural centre of Brno, which is especially true at Christmas. The dynamic, lively Svoboďák is a place to meet up, have fun, and make new friends.

This is where you can find the traditional Christmas tree as well as brand-new food and drink zones at the fountain. The Winter Bar is a popular place to meet, with its numerous types of punches and other popular winter drinks to warm you up and improve your mood.

Stylish and original Christmas gifts are sold not only in the booths but also at the December Design Days event.

From the stage, music of various genres will entertain the visitors; in addition to live concerts, you can enjoy Czech Television Advent concerts, readings for children, the Czechs Sing Carols event, as well as the traditional Saint Nicholas with his crew.

And it’s the culture and music that makes every day on náměstí Svobody so unique; during the day it completes the atmosphere, while in the evening it’s a nice backdrop for you to have fun with friends and relatives.

You know, Brno is a city of music, so it only makes sense, especially since it is so proud to be a UNESCO Creative City of Music.

Attention please! The booths selling refreshments will be open on Christmas Day as well. And even after it. And after New Year’s Eve. Up until January 5! Please see the complete program for Brno Christmas at www.brnenskevanoce.cz.

Charity at náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square)

The donation box on the square has become a beautiful Christmas tradition here in Brno, but there’s a sad story behind it. At Christmas 1919, an abandoned little girl was found in the woods near Brno. Among those who found her was journalist Rudolf Těsnohlídek, who resolved to do something to help abandoned children. He was inspired by the Danish capital of Copenhagen and in 1924 organized the first charity collection under the lit-up Christmas tree.

And since Advent is still a time when we should share with those in need, Brno Christmas offers several ways to show your good heart and help.

Every day, under the Christmas tree, you can find the traditional money box for a collection by the Czech Red Cross. Your contributions will pay for rehabilitation stays for children and seniors in need and help socially handicapped people and families.

Every Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm on náměstí Svobody, you can donate to a moneybox. In return, you can taste some good food and people from the Brno Diocesan Charity, the Dagmar Children’s Home, and the Vodicí pes (Guide Dog) Association will all be so grateful.

The booth run by the charity organizations also offers Christmas fir trees and a light brought right from Bethlehem.

Dominikánské náměstí (Dominican Square)

Dominikánské náměstí is a pedestrian zone with a romantic backdrop of the New Town Hall and Saint Michael’s church.During the Advent markets, it turns into a place for excellent food and drinks as well as Christmas traditions with the Nativity scene, Christmas farm, and Christmas wish lists sent to Baby Jesus. Not only can you buy good food and drinks here but – unlike at other places in the city centre – you can enjoy it here in peace. During and after Advent, this is where you’ll find booths by well-known and successful restaurants and bistros from Brno and its surroundings. The area around the booths is complemented by comfortable areas to enjoy the refreshments; these zones will remain there over and after Christmas for you to refresh yourselves in the open air, without the stress that is typical for the pre-Christmas period.Nativity sceneMaster carver Jiří Halouzka sent his Nativity scene with a hundred characters to Brno. In addition to a lot of animals, there’s the usual cast – baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph.Christmas farmAt the Nativity scene there will be wooden as well as live animals for the little ones to enjoy. The Brno ZOO will bring friendly sheep and pygmy goats for everyone to pet.Christmas workshopsOn weekend afternoons in December, children are welcome to attend Christmas workshops at the square by the mailbox and create decorations for the Christmas tree and windows. And perhaps artist Vendula Chalánková will come as well!Attention! The booths selling refreshments will remain open on Christmas Day. And the following days as well. And in the first days of next year, too! Until January 5.

Page 19: Brno Christmas 11 29– 1 5

Buy a drink at any booth in a returnable cup.

When buying another one, you’ll get a clean cup in return.

When leaving the markets, you may take the cup home as a souvenir or get your deposit back.

Returnable cupsBrno was the first city in the Czech Republic to introduce a system of returnable cups at its Advent markets. This year you can enjoy your favourite drinks from eco-friendly, returnable, plastic or ceramic cups. And once again decorated with original Christmas motifs!

Brno Christmas has two types of returnable cups: ceramic cups (100 CZK) and plastic cups (50 CZK).

Christmas TramA tram, in Brno called a “šalina”, is not only a popular means of transportation here as well as the most famous word of the local dialect. Šalina is a legend and an icon, without which the Brno Christmas simply wouldn’t be the same. The Christmas tram is the only means of transportation which can regularly try to push through the crowds in the city centre without causing an uproar. Its Advent version brightens up people’s faces and makes them want to take a photo of it. And how about taking a ride? Christmas isn’t supposed to be just about hurrying around and shopping, right? It’s about sharing experiences as well. Hop on the Christmas “šalina” and take the most festive ride you can ever enjoy on any city transportation.More on the Christmas tram at www.dpmb.cz or the Facebook page of the Brno Public Transit Authority.

Visitors to Brno Christmas agree to having their pictures taken or being recorded during the event. The photos or footage may then be used by the event organizer in any way that can reasonably be expected, given the nature of the event.

The program is subject to change.
