Next-level scribing and perforatingsolutions for Easy Opening and EasyVentilationIn consumer goods industries, packaging is acrucial factor. Yet difficulties in opening packagesfor anything from peanuts to sauces aresurprisingly common, causing spills and evenminor injuries. The opening process often requirestoo much initial force and is hard to controlbecause of missing or mechanically createdopening lines. ROFIN laser systems offer a moreadvanced solution because they can selectindividual film layers to scribe. This allows forperfect Easy Opening functions leaving those layersintact that protect the product from light andhumidity. ROFIN lasers can even scribe freeformlines, e.g. following the contour on the print – anew inspiration for packaging designers.Where perforation of packaging is required, EasyVentilation functions created with ROFIN lasertechnology take the lead: they increase the shelflife of perishables such as salad and other freshproduce, or control pressure exchange in micro-wave ovens. Laser perforation lines can evencreate easy-tear-off applications. Unlike mechanicaltools such as rotating knives or barrel punches,lasers work contact-free, suffer minimal wear andtear and offer excellent process integrity.

Easy Opening – selective weakening of flexible filmLaser scribing is a method to apply Easy Opening functionality tomultilayered materials for packaging. However, traditional tools tend to scribetoo deep, damaging all layers and jeopardizing product integrity, or tooshallow, demanding too much initial force from consumers to control theopening process. As a much more flexible solution, laser scribing can focuson individual film layers of composite packaging material. Polymers like PET,PP or PE have different properties of absorbing and reflecting light at theCO2 laser wavelength. The absorption in one layer results in ablation whilethe next layer made of a different material stays 100 percent intact.Aluminum or metallized layers, on the other hand, act as a highly reflectivebarrier to the laser light. This allows precise localization of the desiredscribing structures within composite packaging materials. The Easy Openingfunction can therefore be applied without compromising the barrier ormechanical properties of the bag or pouch. The opening lines are clearlyvisible. Opening the package becomes easy to control for the consumer.Moreover, laser scribing is a contact- and wear-free process that guaranteesconsistent quality and high process reliability.
Choose your pathIn most cases, laser processing in flexible packaging is done on web-shapedmaterial. For scribing lines in web direction, ROFIN offers lasers with beamsplitters distributing the laser into individual focusing heads. Each laserbeam scribes one line into the web. For materials that require cross webprocessing, like most bags and pouches, our StarScribe CW (cross web)uses fast scanner heads: Mirrors, driven by Galvanometer motors, thatdeflect the beam on multiple axes. The control software not only lets the beamcompensate for the web movement, it can even be used to create freeformscribing paths such as waves, squares etc. This opens up new possibilitiesfor food and other packaging designers to make their products more usable,more attractive and unique.

Easy Ventilation – micro air holesenhance shelf life of foodIn perishable foods packaging, quality and shelflife depend on a balance between air circulationand preservation of humidity. For adequateperforation of the packaging, ROFIN lasers offersignificant advantages over conventionalprocesses, such as needles or flame: reverting on30 years of experience in laser perforation,ROFIN uses CO2 lasers with high pulse intensitiesto perforate all layers of the packaging material.The micromelted edge of each hole prevents microfissures that could damage the packaging integrity.Depending on the production volume and the taskat hand, ROFIN offers systems with beam splittersand up to four focusing heads for perforation inweb direction, with or without ROFIN’s innovativeweb movement compensation (WMC); or polygonmirror optics that provide up to 16 perforationlines and can deal with very high web speeds.Optimal climate management can be achievedthrough holes varying from 60 to 300 microns indiameter, arranged in regular patterns or in clustersand even sychronized to the print on the packaging.Distances between holes can be adjusted evenwithin the same line. Perforation is also suitablefor pressure exchange function, like in packagesfor microwave meals. Advanced PC-basedcontrollers allow unique flexibility in regards toscribing or perforation patterns.

Laser systems from ROFIN for flexible packagingStarScribe Easy is a 100 W compact turnkey CO2 laser system that can easilybe integrated into existing production lines and winding systems. The flexible,articulated arm allows fast beam positioning with minimal additional effort.With one or two processing heads, StarScribe Easy lasers are a cost-effectivesolution that yields excellent results.
StarScribe Easy S (Scribing) is used for scribing applications in webmovement direction with lines that can be continuous, interrupted orsynchronized to the print. Fields of applications range from productdevelopment to serial production.
StarScribe Easy P (Perforation) is an air-cooled pulsed CO2 laser forperforating a lower density of holes at low to medium winding speeds. Holescan be synchronized to the print or continuous. Main applications are forEasy Ventilation in low-volume production.
StarScribe WD is a high performance module which can be integratedinto existing slitters (as all other systems listed) from all establishedmanufacturers. Up to 8 processing heads allow simultaneous scribing. Highvolumes of scribing structures in web direction at web speeds of up to 600m/min are therefore possible. The system is powered by 100 to 300 W lasersources and can be used for film cutting or scribing with lines that can becontinuous, interrupted or synchronized to the print. StarScribe WD includesconvenient control software and optional support frame.
StarScribe CW (Cross Web) is designed for flexible scribing of freeformcontours on the moving film. Its main applications are bags and poucheswhose specific production and filling process require this set-up. Usingup to six extremely fast scanner heads, StarScribe CW can make lines thatare crosswise to the web, or any other pattern such as circles, squares, etc.The process is controlled through a LaserCAD-based software package –developed by ROFIN – that guarantees flexible programming and a fastchange of the scribing job. The laser is not only fit for scribing but also forcutting flexible structures. The StarScribe CW is designed for a maximumweb width of 1600 mm.

StarPerfo is equipped with a sophisticated PC-based RCU controller and istherefore very flexible in regards to perforation patterns. StarPerfoAdvanced with the WMC technology creates even more constant holeshapes and sizes - also during web ramping. Additionally, the StarPerfoAdvanced system allows much higher winding speeds compared toconventional laser systems.
At your disposal – our application labFor demonstration of our capabilities for both Easy Opening and EasyVentilation we offer to prepare samples for our customers with their originalfilm material in our application lab. Our experienced staff will prepare thesesamples using our inhouse winder in conjunction with StarScribe CW, andStarPerfo / StarPerfo Advanced. With web widths up to 800 mm it ispossible to produce experimental packages with samples made in ourapplication lab.
