Broadband Wireless AccessAlcatel 7390 LMDS. Your Broadband Wireless Route to the Last Mile
1
In today’s world, a network without fast, reliableInternet access is as unthinkable as an officewithout electricity. Online data networking, whichalready comprises one-fifth of the world’s telecom-munications traffic, will account for up to 60 percentof traffic within a few years. The question facing all network operators, then, is how to meet currentand future demand for Internet and intranet access in their backbone and access networks.
Nowhere is the challenge greater than in the local loop, the last mile link between your point of presence and your customers’ premises. Thecustomer access portion typically accounts formore than 50 percent of total network investments. But it’s not only the most costly part of your network,it’s also the least predictable. Potential customersare spread out just about everywhere.
That’s why you require Internet access solutionswhich are flexible, scalable and cost-efficient. To avoid tying up capital in unused capacity, you want to match your spending to real customerrequirements. Given the complexities that surroundintegrated voice, data, video and other serviceofferings for mission-critical commercial applications,it is important for service providers to choosevendors that can address these complexities andwork with them to deploy viable and future-proofnetworks. Service providers are looking for vendorswith solutions that lower operating costs and allowthem to rapidly increase service penetration andexpand market share.
Every operator wants speedy return on investment, but the issue is especially critical for new operators, eager to roll out revenue-generating services asquickly as possible. Especially in newly deregulatedmarket environments, time to market is a vitalcriterion when evaluating Internet access solutions.
No single approach can meet all of the challengesof providing Internet access, but wireless systemsoffer the most flexibility and freedom. Alcatel 7390LMDS Solutions are ideal for serving large numbersof small and medium-sized businesses, corporatebranch offices, small offices/home offices (SOHOs)and residential subscribers in dense urban andsuburban locations. You can provide last milebroadband access; voice and data services, including LAN interconnections, IP services andPBX applications; and virtual leased line services.Or whatever combination of these best serves yourparticular subscriber needs.
Alcatel also delivers the expertise and experienceneeded to provide: full market assessments; serviceselection; business case analysis; network, serviceand cell planning; financing; training; andinstallation and technical support.
Alcatel 7390 LMDS broadband wireless accesssystems can also provide an attractive solution for mobile network operators seeking to launchfixed services while optimizing the interconnectionof their mobile base stations and base stationcontrollers in busy downtown areas. What’s more, combined fixed and mobile operators can use a single LMDS network to interconnect bothcustomer sites and base stations.
Speed onto the InternetWith demand skyrocketing and competition intensifying, you need a fast, reliable way to deliver
a full range of high speed services right to customers’ premises. Alcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions provide
new opportunities for you to vastly increase your subscriber base.
2

Turn last mile problems into lasting solutions
Multiservice. Get the most from your accessnetwork by mixing and matching advancedtelecommunications (ISDN telephony) andbroadband services (leased lines, fast Internetaccess, high speed data transmission, etc.).
Take the broad point of viewAlcatel 7390 LMDS Solutions represent a major step forward in access networks. Thanks to digital wireless
technology, you can provide broadband last mile connections to thousands of subscribers from a single hub.
Multiple radio solutions. Suitable to all typesof allocations: single block, duplex, large spectrumband and small spectrum band.
LMDS in regions with heavy rain. The 10 GHzfrequency band allows provisioning of LMDS evenin heavy rain regions where higher frequencies wouldbe very short range, thus limiting the service onlyto major cities.
LMDS in medium density areas. 10 GHzallows provisioning of LMDS with larger cells, making it applicable to lower density regionswhere ranges at higher frequencies would makethe infrastructure economically unfeasible. Thedeployment can be made only in the 10 GHzfrequency band or by combining 10 GHz with a higher frequency for dense areas.
Scalable. Increase network capacity quicklyand easily, where and when you need it.
High service quality. Broadband wirelessoffers incumbent service providers a complementarysolution to address the requirements for last mileconnectivity of data, Internet and voice services, advanced IP services and digital video services overthe air. For alternate or emerging carriers (CLECs),broadband wireless eliminates the need to installor lease fiber or copper networks, thereby allowingthese carriers to bypass the local market’s greatestbarrier to entry.
Fixed and mobile operators can interconnect both customer sites and cellular base stations using the same fixed broadband wireless system.
Local multipoint distribution service: a virtual fiber local access solution
LMDS networks provide the capacity, quality andreliability of optic fiber, with none of the easement,right-of-way or construction headaches of hard-wired systems. The three components — BaseStation, Customer Terminal Station and NetworkManagement — constitute a star-architecturenetwork which can be configured and reconfiguredto meet your current and future access networkrequirements.
