Thank you to Lorena for hosting our discussion on Elena Ferrante's 'My Brilliant Friend' . Although we felt that something had been lost in the translation of this, the first of her popular and acclaimed 'Neopolitan Series', the usual lively discussion, sup-plemented by some Italian inspired nibbles, made it a very enjoyable evening. The next meeting is at Debbie's, Challows House, on the 17th of October when we will discuss 'The Remains of the Day' by Kazuo Ishiguro. If you have any questions please call Diane on 712105.

Record of Biddestone & Hartham W.I. meeting held on 21st September 2016 President, Jo Hancock, welcomed eight members to the meeting and then introduced speaker, Lynda Warren, to talk about Cameron Mackintosh, producer of many successful musicals. She talked about his early years; in 1969 he pro-duced "Anything Goes" on a budget of £250! "Godspell" was next and she played a recording of "Day by Day" from that. Lynda holds a PPL licence for the public performance of recorded music, and all the pieces she played were from actual stage performances. In 1981 Cameron collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on "Cats" and from then on his fortune was made. "Les Miserables", "Phantom of the Opera", "Miss Saigon" and "Mary Poppins" followed, and she played songs from all of these. He is now 70 and has a £675 million fortune but has given away large sums to worthwhile causes. It was a fascinating talk, with the added bonus of hearing so many of the songs (to which we were encouraged to join in). It was a great pity that there were so few there - and those who weren't missed a treat! Jo thanked Lynda on behalf of those members present, and after a break for refreshments ( a delicious cake made by Georgina Alston) business matters were attended to. The Record of the June meeting was taken as read, as were the short articles about the Garden Party and August out-ing, all of which had been published in the Broadsheet. The Sunflower challenge was won by Georgina whose sunflower measured 110 inches. Val S-J had knitted a sensory band for dementia patients to wear as demonstrated in a leaflet for Carers, which could be made from different scraps of wool, and she encouraged other members to do the same. Correspondence The subject for photographs for the 2018 calendar is "Bridges in Wiltshire", to be submitted by December this year. The subscription for 2017 will be £39, due in January. A Campaign Action Pack and poster on Carers and Dementia had been received. Also information on the W.I. supermarket investigation and Food Waste survey. There will be New Speakers Days in January, April, July and November at different ven-ues, Westbury and Colerne being the nearest. Finance. Institutes had been asked to donate money from raffles and teas at their September meet-ing to the Denman Appeal and it was agreed that £30 should be sent, with money being given from funds to boost the small amount raised due to the poor attendance. Val S-J said that cakes for kids would be welcome for Bonfire Night which will be on 4th November. Next meeting October 19th in the Village Hall at 2pm for 2.15pm. The speaker will be Mr. Paul Jupp giving a talk entitled “Meadow in my Garden”, explaining how to create a meadow, and he will have seeds available to buy—Visitors welcome.

Editor As a regular visitor to St Nicholas Church Biddestone I should like to compliment and thank those responsible for the clean‐up repairs and improvements to the church and in particular the churchyard. I know that the churchyard is managed in line with a conservation policy but it was becoming rather overgrown and some of more fragile species were being choked off by ivy and other vigorous plants. The church is such a tranquil place ‐ a haven of peace passed down into our care by generations past. Biddestone is indeed fortunate to have residents who recog‐nise and value the legacy they have been given and will ensure that it is main‐tained for future generations to enjoy.  Alan Redfearn ‐ Bristol
