UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS
I. INTRODUCTION
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), nestled in a sylvan ambience and one of the global hubs of excellence, has taken its strides to set its bench mark in academics, research and extension.
The TNAU had begun as an Agricultural School at Saidapet in Chennai in 1876 and proliferated as a college in Coimbatore, during 1906. In 1920, the college was affiliated to the University of Madras with the introduction of a three-‐year degree program. Till 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore was the only institute for agricultural education for the whole of South India. In 1958, it was recognized as a Postgraduate Centre offering Masters and Doctoral degrees. The Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai was established in 1965. These two colleges formed the nucleus of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, when it was established in 1971 offering four year B. Sc. (Agri.) degree program.
In the year 1972, the degree programs B. Sc. (Horticulture) and B. E. (Agriculture) were
started. In furtherance, in 1979, the faculty of Horticulture was established. To nurture the home grown innovations, in 1980, B. Sc. (Home Science) was started at Madurai campus. The third Agricultural College was started at Killikulam in 1984 and the fourth at Navalur Kuttappattu, Tiruchirappalli in 1989. B. Sc. (Forestry) program was started during 1985.
Currently, B. Sc. (Horticulture) and B. Tech. (Agricultural Engineering) degree programs
are being offered at Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam and Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Kumulur, respectively. The Forest College and Research Institute at Mettupalayam is offering B. Sc. (Forestry) program. A new Agricultural College and Research Institute at Kilvelur, Nagapattinam, will be offering B. Sc. (Agriculture) program from this academic year 2011-‐2012.
Five colleges viz., Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal, Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore, Thanthai Roever Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development, Perambalur, Vanavarayar Institute of Agriculture, Manakkadavu, Pollachi and College of Agricultural Technology, Gullapuram, Vaigaidam, Theni are affiliated to TNAU and offering B. Sc. (Agriculture) program by self-‐financing mode. Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College is offering B. Sc. (Horticulture) program also by self-‐financing mode.
In the backdrop of changing agricultural situation and developments in science and technology, TNAU introduced unique technology programs viz., B. Tech. (Food Process Engineering) during 1998-‐1999, B. Tech. (Biotechnology) and B. Tech. (Horticulture) during
2
2002-‐2003, B. Tech. (Energy and Environmental Engineering) during 2004-‐2005 and B. Tech. (Bioinformatics) during 2006-‐2007. Owing to the developments in agricultural and information sciences and to capitalize on these potentialities, two courses, viz., B. S. (Agribusiness Management) and B. Tech. (Agricultural Information Technology) were started during 2007-‐2008.
From the 2011-‐2012 academic year onwards, a new degree program B. Sc. (Sericulture) will be offered in the Coimbatore campus.
At present, TNAU is offering the following 13 Undergraduate degree programs, all of
four year duration (eight semesters).
