On the first day of food distribution, in 2003, there were 84 families. Today, there are between 80-120 families at each distribution and over 7,500 families are signed up for our food program. The Monument Crisis Center is open for food distribution five times a week. House-holds receive food every month, enough to last 3 to 4 days. Our food program relies on monetary and food donations from the community. The food program purchases about 20,000 pounds of food every week and receives about 2,300 pounds of food through private donations. We constantly seek other sources to sustain our increasing number of clients.

Senior Moments is a semi-monthly gathering with an average of 75 senior participants. Each gathering is brimming with enthusiasm, music, chatter, and most beloved: “Bilingo!” (bilingual bingo) After the social is over, each senior receives a bag of nutritious food. Participants are seniors or special needs adults on limited incomes; most rely on the Center for their basic needs, their only social outlet, and the festivities are enjoyed by participants and volunteers alike!

The youth have been assembling at the Monu-ment Crisis Center since its opening in 2003 when teens would come from local high schools and tutor children from Cambridge Elementary School and Oak Grove Middle School. In September 2006 it became a formal program. The program is planned, prepared and executed completely by the local volunteer teens. The teens prepare snacks, set out art supplies and mentor the children with their homework or various arts and crafts activities.

Food Distribution Senior Moments After School

The ESL program started in 2004 with a few volunteers that identified a need in our commu-nity for learning English. Since then clients have been receiving basic conversational classes that help them get around in their everyday lives. The classes have been evolving throughout the years. Today we have ten regular teachers over a 6 week cycle, and different practical topics are viewed each week. Each student is provided with a dictionary and encouraged to participate in all sessions.

ESL ClassesThe Employment Opportunities Workshop is designed to assist clients in their job search by offering various job postings and announce-ments, guidance in job search techniques, help with creating an effective resume/cover letter, and provides referrals to local job networking groups. Clients can also receive assistance in interviewing techniques and time management.
