Welcome,

The French Language and Culture Institute of Lyon is a

school that specializes in teaching French to foreignstudents and adults. It is part of the Literature andLanguage Department of the Catholic University ofLyon. The ILCF Lyon is located in the historic heart ofthe city, designated a world heritage site by theUNESCO.

The French Language and Culture Institute wascertified "FLE" by the Ministries of Education, ForeignAffairs and Culture in 2008. The ILCF Lyon is part ofthe federation "Universit de Lyon" and is also memberof the ADCUEFE, a grouping of French Universities inthe FLE field.

Discover Lyonand the RhneAlpes region

Situated in the heart of the city of Lyon, the

Institute of French Language and Culture at theCatholic University of Lyon offers students theadvantage of being the second largest city in France.

The city is the economic capital of the RhneAlpesregion, a very dynamic region, a crossroad betweennorth and south, near Switzerland and Italy. Themeeting of its two rivers, the Rhne and the Sane,gives the city its charm.

It takes only two hours to reach Paris by TGV. Thecity is not far from the sea (1 hour and a half by TGV)and the mountains (the Alps).

The city of culture, science and industry

The city of Lyon is a cultural center. You can go tothe Opera and to the National Orchestra of Lyon, or tothe National Conservatory of Music and the "ThtreNational Populaire".

Sciences are also well represented in Lyon becausethe city has many international research centers forrare diseases (le laboratoire P4) and research centersfor cancer (le Centre Lon Brard). As far as industryis concerned, chemistry takes an important role at theFrench Institute of Petrol and at Rhne Poulenc.

Lyon is also the European headquarters of Interpoland Euronews (an informational TV channelbroadcasted in every European language).

In choosing Lyon, you have the possibility to study atthe Catholic University, in one of the three Universitiesor in a "Grande Ecole" (for example the School ofArchitecture, the National school of Construction, theSchool of Management of Lyon and the School ofTheatre).

History of Lyon, from Lugdunum to todayLyon was once called Lugdunum and was the Roman

capital of Three Gauls. It was also a major Europeancrossroads and capital of printing during the sixteenthcentury. Moreover, Lyon is the capital of silk andrepresented the end of the silk road from China. Many

famous people were born in Lyon including Andr MarieAmpre (discoverer of electromagnetism), the Lumirebrothers (inventors of cinema) and Antoine de SaintExupry (aviator and author of the Petit Prince).

Lyon has been the center of many great historicalevents. The work of the canuts (silk weavers) madeLyon an important city during the IndustrialRevolution. During World War II, the Prefect JeanMoulin made Lyon the center of the Resistancemovement.

Lyon is also the capital of gastronomy. Beaujolaiswine is made in the nearby countryside. It is servedoften with Lyon sausage or a plate of delicious

quenelles.

The Institute of French Language and Culture (ILCF)

was created in 1948 by the College of Liberal Arts atthe Catholic University of Lyon. The Institute has

connections with numerous institutes and universities

in France and abroad.

Studies open to the world

The courses are created for everyone wishing to learn

French or to improve their knowledge of the French

language and culture in an international environment.

Classes are made up of students from all over the

world.

Linguistic abilitiesCourses are organized in groups based on language

level. These levels correspond to the European

Framework of Reference for Languages.

Communicative language activities increase the

following competences:

reception: listening, reading,

production: written and oral expression,

communication: conversation skills,

mediation: translation and interpretation activities.

Progression of the courses and the documents used

Courses are designed to help students gain autonomyin their use of French. This is done through activities

that encourage students to practice oral and written

comprehension and expression. The language activities

given to students are varied but are based on a

grammar book, a workbook of exercises and original

documents (press, cartoon strips, texts, videos, etc.)

and integrative excursions, as the ILCF is located in

the heart of the City. Students should obviously

progress in grammar, language use, and knowledge of

French culture as a result. It is important to note that

active student participation is required to see this

progression.

The validation of knowledge

Organized in accordance to the European Credits

Transfer System (ECTS), the programs offered at the

Institute are validated by diplomas awarded by the

Catholic University. These diplomas can be translated

into equivalent credits or units at universities, colleges

or institutes abroad. Students also have the

opportunity to sit for the examinations offered by the

National Education Board, for example the DELF, the

DALF, or the TCF because the ILCF is an official

examination center.

The ILCF is a member of the ADCUEFE which gathers 30

French universities and as such provides the following

certificates and diplomas:

DUEF: Diplme Universitaire d''Etudes Franaises

If you are enrolled in a semester or in an academic

year program of the ILCF Lyon (intensive or semi

intensive), regular assessments, exams and your active

participation in class should allow you to obtain a

university diploma. The level of this diploma

corresponds to the level reached: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1,

C2 (levels from the European Framework of Reference

for Languages).

CLCF: Certificat de Langue et de Culture Franaises

(French Language and Culture Certificate) delivered

after completion of the regular assessments for

Intensive Monthly and Summer Programs. The level of

this certificate corresponds to the level reached: A1,A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 (levels from the European

Framework of Reference for Languages).

If you are enrolled in a monthly or in a summer

intensive program, you will be given a certificate that

states your level, which is based on regular

assessments.

University credits (ECTS)

If you are a student in a foreign university, we provide

you with a detailed list of grades (university credits)that you have obtained in the Institute or in another

department of the University. University credits

correspond to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

Admission

Students must be at least 18 years old and be in

possession of a diploma indicating completion ofsecondary school in their country, except for the

monthly and the summer intensive programs.

Preenrollment

Preenrollment is obligatory in order to receive a

student visa. To preenroll, send the application with :

the preenrollment form

a deposit of 366 for semester programs, 610 for

the academic year, 191 for the intensive month

courses and the summer sessions, (this deposit will be

deducted from the total amount of enrollment fees. It

will not be reimbursed in case of withdrawal).

Student Visa

Then, the ILCF will send you a receipt of your pre

enrollment. This will be needed to obtain your student

visa. Any student staying more than 3 months in France

or wishing to benefit from student status must take

the first administrative steps by addressing the French

Embassy or French Consulate in his own country.

Beware ! The visa can in no way be obtained in France

after your arrival. A tourist visa can never be turned

into a student visa.

Visa refusalIf the visa is denied by the country of origin and if you

provide us with the original of the official document

confirming the refusal, the deposit will be reimbursed,

except for 122 to cover administrative costs. This

only takes place if the secretary is informed by a

written document a minimum of 8 days before the

level test.

EnrollmentIn order to finish enrollment, students have to come to

card file as soon as you have completed your

for housing financial assistance "CAF", or for a job.

Medical Insurance

Since October 1, 1999, all foreign students under the

age of 28 (with the exception of residents of the

European Union) must subscribe to a medical insurance

policy in France (the arrt of 29th June in the Journal

Officiel of 10th July 1999). The cost of this insurance is

200 for 2010/2011.

Students from the European Union must provide the

E128 form (delivered in their own country).

Therefore, students under 28 years old don't have to

register for an insurance in their country of origin for

their stay in France. For students over 28 years old,

nothing changes.

Civil Liability Insurance

All French and foreign students must apply for the civil

liability insurance. The price is 4,88 euros for the

academic year 2010/2011.

ILCF Lyon Students CouncilEach year, students of the ILCF designate arepresentative from each group to create the "StudentAssociation". These representatives propose activitiesthat all the students of the University can participatein. The fee is 6 for 2010/2011).Email : [email protected]

Library

All students are required to pay a library membership

fee. This membership grants access to all of the Lyon

University Libraries. The cost of this membership is
