You may feel you know the JAGUAR XJ, but take a closer look and it might still be able to surprise you. There is more to the XJ than elegant design. The XJ is also about substance and character – all underpinned by leading-edge technology. For JAGUAR, technology is the means, not the end – the servant not the master.

Take the XJ’s unique all-aluminium monocoque body structure. The techniques and materials derive fromthe aerospace industry, but the benefits are firmly down to earth. Huge strength with exceptional lightness defies convention by rejecting compromise, and that is the aluminium XJ’s underlying beauty – a large saloon that isn’t heavy, a luxurious saloon that’s both agile and sporty, a beautiful saloon that uses advanced technology intelligently. Lower weight and increased rigidity are platforms for safety, for performance, for dynamic handling and for fuel efficiency. Without unwanted weight, power is never wasted, acceleration is quicker, steering is more responsive, brakes and suspension are less stressed, economy is not just a wish.

CATS™ (Computer Active Technology Suspension) is another advanced means to a highly desirable end – near-magical balance between supple comfort, outstanding body control, passenger-pleasing refinement and sporty, driver-focused responses.

Lightweight suspension links and air springs build on the rigidity and low weight of the aluminium shell, to soak up the rough and focus on the smooth. Automatically variable ride height keeps comfort and control independent of load, and optimises stability and aerodynamic efficiency at speed. The adaptive control of CATS™ means the XJ is always in tune with the road’s condition and the driver’s inputs.

Again, intelligent use of technology gives the XJ the talent to surprise.

Agility and tenacity are not normally associated with spacious luxury saloons. Don’t imagine that because the aluminium-bodied XJ is big and beautiful it is also soft and uninvolving – it is far from it.

Because we are not all the same, the XJ offers a range of engines to cover all preferences. Because we do all want the best balance between performance, refinement and economy, JAGUAR has designed that into every XJ engine – from the powerful and economical 207ps 2.7 litre twin turbocharged V6 diesel*, through the light and compact 235ps 3.0 litre V6 petrol, to the 298ps 4.2 litre V8 petrol and the supercharged 395ps V8 that powers the XJR and Super V8*.

Again, prepare to be surprised – by powerful, efficient petrol engines and a diesel that is simply astonishing in its breadth of talent.

It was designed from a clean sheet to be one of the strongest and most refined diesels in the world. It has lightweight Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) construction, high-pressure common-rail direct injection and multi-phase injection timing, and delivers a huge spread of torque with smoothness, economy and CO2 emissions of just 209g/km. Its Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system means the outside world will never see a wisp of smoke, while its electronically controlled ‘active’ engine mounts mean those inside will never be ruffled by noise or vibration. This is diesel power with perfect manners.

You have the choice, but with XJ it no longer involves compromise.

To be completely satisfying, performance must be underpinned by security, confidence and control, and maybe a little understatement. Best of all is performance with something in reserve – performance without having to try too hard.

That’s the philosophy behind the R badge, and the personality of the XJR*. Signature features like the 20-inch wheels are about function not fashion. Unique styling cues such as the aluminium finish power vents and black painted brake calipers say ‘sporting’ just loudly enough to set the XJR apart without losing its subtlety.

Like every XJ it starts with lightness on its side, then adds the effortless power of JAGUAR’s 395ps 4.2 litre supercharged V8, which has the ability to take the XJR from 0-100km/h in just 5.3 seconds. But it’s the controlled suppleness of the XJR’s sports suspension and powerful reassurance of its high performance R braking system, that make that performance even more satisfying. So if you want it that way, you don’t have to shout about it.

So before it earned its badge, the XJ had proved itself in the heat of the Arizona desert and near-Arctic cold of northern Canada. It had tested engines, brakes and the cooling system to the limit over some of Europe’s highest and steepest mountain passes, often towing a maximum load. In durability tests it had run the equivalent of 160,000 kilometres of high-speed autobahn driving, and chalked up 240,000 kilometres of ‘whole life’ use. Twice.

JAGUAR also has one special ribbon of road that it returns to over and over again. Just over 22 kilometres long, twisting through the Eiffel forest, it packs in 73 corners and every kind of road surface, camber and incline. It is the ‘Nordschleife’ of the

legendary Nurburgring – opened in the 1920s as a Grand Prix circuit, and still regarded by the most demanding engineers in the world as the ultimate test of what makes a great car great.

The XJ ran some 8,000 near-the-limit kilometres on ‘the green hell’, honing its six-speed automatic transmission, variable ratio power steering, electronically controlled air suspension and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) – so you can be confident that a great drive in the XJ will be exactly that.

They are technologies that define how the XJ feels on the road, keep a watchful eye on those you share it with, and look out for all those things that could spoil your day. The feel of comfort and control starts with S E L F L E V E L L I N G A I R S U S P E N S I O N that avoids the compromises of conventional springs in a car with the XJ’s lightweight aluminium construction. So whether you’re alone or fully loaded, the XJ rides with the same composure and handles with the same fluency. The only time its ride height will vary is to improve aerodynamic efficiency and fuel economy at motorway cruising speeds. Beyond that, C A T S T M ( C O M P U T E R A C T I V E T E C H N O L O G Y S U S P E N S I O N ) subtly adapts the XJ’s ride and handling characteristics to changes of conditions, optimising its damping programmes between soft and firm when the road turns smooth or bumpy, straight or twisting, reducing harshness under braking, and improving high-speed stability.

When the road is slippery, T R A C T I O N C O N T R O L helps keep driven wheels fromspinning as you’re driving away or accelerating – at traffic lights or T-junctions – andreacts even in mid-corner to resist the rear end breaking away when power outweighs grip.Drive harder and you’ll be supported by D Y N A M I C S T A B I L I T Y C O N T R O L ( D S C ) , an active safety system that helps you enjoy the XJ’s limits without overstepping them. DSC constantly monitors data from a host of variables – the shape of the road, the conditions,the driver’s inputs; and when the balance is wrong the system restores it – by smooth control of throttle and brakes to help restore grip and steering responses. It doesn’t spoil your enjoyment by intervening when it isn’t needed, and if you really know both conditions and skills are right, it even has an off-switch.

On the long motorway cruise, JAGUAR’s award-winning optional A D A P T I V E C R U I S E

C O N T R O L ( A C C )* not only maintains a constant speed, it uses radar technology to monitor traffic ahead of you and adjust your speed to keep your distance. It is designed to know your braking distances, and to increase the gap as traffic moves faster. When it needs to, it intervenes by applying the brakes, so however busy the road you won’t be continuously turning cruise on and off. In addition, F O R W A R D A L E R T works with ACC (even when ACC is switched off) to warn that the gap to slow moving traffic ahead is too small, so the driver can respond by braking as necessary. With or without ACC in action, the XJ’s standard-fit A U T O M A T I C S P E E D L I M I T E R can memorise a chosen maximum speed and limit the throttle response if the driver is about to exceed it – but with kick-down cancellation if the extra speed is needed. Even when your drive is over, P A R K I N G A I D S at both the front and rear of the XJ will help you manoeuvre when space or visibility are limited, with audible warnings to tell you when close becomes too close.

You will only fully know the strength of aluminium construction, side impact protection, crumple zones and multiple airbags if ever you really need to know. You will always appreciate the powerful Teves braking system, but may never be aware of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), although they are always there. You may never run over the sharp object in the road, but if you do, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), where fitted, is designed to tell you about it before a nuisance becomes a danger. In the front of the XJ you will be in seats that sense your weight and position, absorb bumps and with advanced seatbelts that help guard against whiplash. If the dictionary says ARTSTM (Adaptive Restraint Technology System), it means enhanced protection if things go wrong.

To feel really happy, you must feel secure. To feel secure, you must have trust. In the XJ, you are cradled in strong arms, protected without needing to think about it.

M O N I T O R I N G S Y S T E M ( T P M S ) to warn the driver of any change in pressure – reducing the risk of unexpected failures as well as enhancing ride, handling and fuel economy. The XJ considers safety from all angles. Every door is equipped with S I D E I M P A C T P R O T E C T I O N to help shield the occupant cell, while foam blocks within the doors further help with the absorption of energy. Inside that cell, every occupant has a huge range of I N T E R I O R S A F E T Y F E A T U R E S on their side, from airbags to sophisticated seatbelt systems to the seats themselves. The XJ’s A I R B A G

S Y S T E M S include two-stage D R I V E R A N D F R O N T P A S S E N G E R A I R B A G S that are designed to deploy with minimum unwanted effects. Front seat T H O R A X A I R B A G S are standard and help provide thorax and rib protection, and rapid-fill C U R T A I N A I R B A G S along both sides of the car help enhance head protection to front and rear occupants in a side impact. To JAGUAR, safety is a whole-picture issue, and the XJ’s A D V A N C E D R E S T R A I N T T E C H N O L O G Y S Y S T E M ( A R T S T M ) combines an array of sophisticated technologies that give improved protection for front seat passengers in a frontal impact.

With ARTSTM, the XJ’s front seats are comprehensive safety systems in their own right. Those dual-stage airbags are controlled by a R E S T R A I N T C O N T R O L M O D U L E whose six crash sensors are designed to determine exactly what airbag response is appropriate. S E A T W E I G H T

S E N S I N G detects whether the passenger seat is occupied, and senses the occupant’s weight range; the S E A T T R A C K P O S I T I O N S E N S O R detects the fore and aft position of the driver’s seat; the O C C U P A N T P O S I T I O N S E N S O R detects the front passenger’s position in the seat; and the S E A T B U C K L E S E N S O R monitors the status of the front belts. Together, all combine to reduce unnecessary passenger airbag deployments, and, when an airbag is deployed, to reduce the risk of airbag-induced injuries. In the XJ, safety is enhanced by some of JAGUAR’s most sophisticated technology – but one thing is fundamental, the XJ’s aluminium construction. Underpinning all its other benefits is a bodyshell that is lighter, stronger and more rigid than an equivalent shell construction from steel. So it will strike any other object with less force, and will have significantly less energy to be absorbed by the car’s safety structure during any impact. Which isn’t only good for the XJ’s occupants, it’s good for other road-users, too.

For JAGUAR, craftsmanship is everything, but craftsmanship doesn’t mean doing things the old way, it means doing them the best way that modern methods can deliver – so anything you see and touch tells you that it was created by someone who actually cared.In fact craftsmanship begins with the big things like the lightweight aluminium shell and refined powertrains, but craftsmanship is also about tiny details such as embossed headrests, and never being satisfied, about precision, beauty and endless perfecting. It is about leather and wood and deep carpets, but with a thoroughly modern design language to sit comfortably alongside technical materials like textured aluminium. So JAGUAR’s leather still comes from farms without wire fences to scratch the hides; and the wood you see is really wood – hand selected, with every piece of veneer hand crafted and ‘mirror matched’. But, like the leather, the range of grains and finishes is utterly contemporary, like fine modern furniture.

Craftsmanship means flawless paint and razor-sharp panel fits. Even the interior sound of the XJ is engineered to a distinctive JAGUAR blueprint – quiet and relaxing over a long journey, mechanically refined, isolated from wind and road noises by acoustic laminated glass and Integrated Acoustic Damping, obsessive against creaks and squeaks, but always with just a hint of that underlying, feline power.

JAGUAR believe that you should feel even better when you get out of the XJ than you felt when you got in, and that two things among many in life help us to feel pampered – time and space. The time element the XJ takes care of by shrinking the longest journeys with its comfort and effortless performance; the space part comes as standard, especially in the XJ LONG WHEELBASE, with its acres of rear legroom.

Not that the standard wheelbase XJ is less than sumptuous, but the XJ LONG WHEELBASE is for stretching out and relaxing in, perhaps letting someone else do the driving. Or maybe to double as an office away from the office, with a fine line in luxury. Now there’s even more space, even more lifestyle support – even more choice of what makes being on the move easier. Rear seats can be electronically adjustable, and optional four-zone climate control* gives every occupant their own bubble of comfort. Multimedia screens in the back of each front headrest are also available, to keep you entertained or informed.

It’s beginning to get dark, and there are spots of rain in the air; lights and wipers come on – but you didn’t have to do anything, the XJ did it for you. Heated front and rear screens stop misting in seconds. As the temperature changes, climate control keeps yours constant, and when outside is hot, ventilated front seats are available to keep you cool. When you need to breathe in, outside mirrors can retract; when roadside space is tight, front and rear parking assist tells you exactly where the space runs out. Satellite Navigation means you need never be lost, Bluetooth® telephone connectivity, where available, means you need never be out of touch, a choice of high-specification audio systems guarantees something to listen to, while optional JaguarVoiceTM means that, for some things, you only have to ask.

In the XJ you don’t need five hands or a degree in logistics – JAGUAR believes in lots of features but few controls, and the seven-inch Touch-screen puts most of them directly at your fingertips.

7 - I N C H T O U C H - S C R E E NJAGUAR has one simple philosophy about technology: to be truly useful, it must be easy to use, and that’s as true for creature comforts as for driving aids. So although the XJ bristles with good things, you won’t find a confusing excess of dials and buttons. Keeping life simple, the full-colour high-definition seven-inch screen at the centre of the dashboard can be used to control many key functions at the touch of a finger. That starts with the J A G U A R S O U N D S Y S T E M S FM/AM radio and single-slot CD player – all controlled through clear on-screen menus. Its tuner delivers your choice of listening, with 4 x 35W output through full-range speakers in each door. There is also the choice of a six-disc CD changer, and the JAGUAR premium sound system adds Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and optimised EQ equalisation, with twelve speakers to handle its eight-channel 320W output. A T V S Y S T E M is also available. The D U A L - Z O N E C L I M A T E C O N T R O L system monitors ambient and cabin temperature humidity and compensates for the sun. There are separate controls for driver and passenger, and with the multi-function screen, everything from temperature to airflow to distribution can be managed at a touch. The Four-Zone option on petrol models gives left and right-side rear passengers independent control, too, from their own panel. B L U E T O O T H ® P H O N E C O N N E C T I V I T Y , where available, allows up to five separate mobiles to be paired to the car, with Touch-screen dialling, phonebook access and last number redialling lists for compatible phones – all without having to touch the handset. The XJ’s standard S A T E L L I T E N A V I G A T I O N * system uses the Touch-screen’s large, crystal clear display and DVD-based data store to map your route, set destinations by postcode, store memory points, show carefully selected points of interest, even to show

details of JAGUAR dealers. You could also choose one system that doesn’t even ask you to touch the screen – J A G U A R V O I C E T M . Once enabled, J A G U A R V O I C E T M lets occupants control many systems simply by asking, from climate control and audio or TV settings to telephone commands and navigation. It could hardly be easier.

R E A R S C R E E N M U L T I M E D I AThe Rear Multimedia System, optional on all models, features 6.5-inch LCD video screens fitted in the back of each front headrest, and a versatile entertainment system with full function iPod and MP3 player compatibility. Rear seat passengers can watch TV even when the driver and front seat passenger can’t, and listen through their own accessory headphones. With a control panel in the rear centre armrest and console, they can also choose to listen to the radio or CDs, play video games or even watch DVD movies with the optional DVD Player. So it may be a long time before anyone asks, ‘are we there yet?’

M E M O R Y P A C KBeing comfortable should be easy too, so the XJ remembers just how you like to sit. Its driver’s M E M O R Y S E A T has sixteen ways to put everything exactly right. At the touch of a button you can adjust fore and aft, change the height and tilt of the seat cushion both front and rear, recline the backrest and set your preferred lumbar support, or power your headrest to its most comfortable position. You have dual lumbar adjustments too, and can extend or retract the front of the cushion. The Memory Pack means the driver can store three different settings. But not only for the seats: the M E M O R Y S T E E R I N G W H E E L

power adjusts for rake and reach, so however you sit you will have the perfect mixture of room, control and visibility; M E M O R Y P E D A L S are a typical touch of JAGUAR detail that adds one more level of driving position adjustability, to let you find perfect comfort for your feet and ankles too. So you don’t have to search for the optimum outside view, the XJ’s M E M O R Y M I R R O R S are also part of the programme – once your preferences are stored, even if someone else changes them you can go straight back to where you are most comfortable.

A U T O M A T I O NThen there are the final touches that are JAGUAR’s driving equivalent of perfect service– the attention to detail that means the XJ will do some of the other important things so you don’t have to. So when the windscreen senses spots of rain, the XJ’s R A I N S E N S I N G W I N D S C R E E N W I P E R S will deal with it, select a setting appropriate to anything from a few drops to a downpour, and even recognise when you stop in traffic. Similarly, when night falls, the XJ’s A U T O M A T I C H E A D L A M P S will switch themselves on with perfect timing. They will operate in tunnels and any other low light conditions as well, and if the tunnel ends or the dark clouds disappear, they will switch off automatically too.

One of the rewards of success is choice, and with the XJ, choosing the engine, the colour, the veneers, even the wheelbase, is only the start. When you’re ready to own a JAGUAR, there should be a JAGUAR that’s right for you. So if you have a wish, JAGUAR probably has an answer.

The XJ offers more content, more substance, more thought. You can choose to have Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), alternative alloy wheel designs, sunblinds and sunroof, a JAGUAR premium sound system and those rear multimedia screens. You can have television with your Satellite Navigation, and lambswool rugs under your feet. You can have additional practical touches including versatile towing and carrying options.
