Grand Designs Scottish Baronial Teetotaller’s home Originally called New Inverawe, Ardanaiseig was built for Colonel James Archibald Campbell of Clan Campbell in 1834 by renowned Scottish architect William Burn. Burn was a prolific architect credited with a number of Edinburgh's finest 19th century buildings, along with over 600 manor houses built or remodeled for the Scottish gentry. He is considered the founder of the Scottish Baronial style. The disciplinarian Colonel Campbell was a devout churchman and teatotaller who lived at New Inverawe with two wives and many children. An amusing local tale describes how the Colonel would choose one of his many daughters to row him across the loch to church at Cladich each Sunday, with the rest of the family and the entire domestic staff following in a flotilla of smaller vessels. When Colonel Campbell died in 1879, New Inverawe was sold to a mining magnate from Cumberland, Mr John Ainsworth. Initially there was suspicion of the new owner, but in a letter the Campbell of Inverawe wrote that although Ainsworth had made his money from a hole in the ground, he seemed a decent fellow. This cautious optimism was justified when Ainsworth became Liberal MP for Argyll and was awarded a Baronetcy in 1916 for his public services.

‘The Point by the Ferry’ A new name for New Inverawe A condition of the sale of New Inverawe was that the house’s name be changed. The new owner chose Ardanaiseig, the local Gaelic name for the point on which the house was located. Meaning “The point by the ferry” the origins of this name are obscure. The eponymous ferry may have been the one at the nearby village of Tervine, which is known to have existed for many centuries, or perhaps there was a ferry to Innishail (the Holy Isle) just offshore.

A Brief History

Bheithir and the Magic Well The air hangs heavy with Celtic myths and memories Once upon a time, far above Ardanaiseig, hidden high in the lofty corries of the mighty Ben Cruachan, there was a magic well of youth. According to ancient Celtic legend, this Magic Well was guarded by the lovely goddess Bheithir. Each evening, she bathed in its enchanted waters to preserve her ageless beauty. But once, after bathing at dusk, she forgot to replace the capstone on the sacred spring.

All night long the crystal waters poured from the mountainside and flooded the valley below to form Loch Awe. Beithir, banished by the gods and cursed with immortality, was transformed into the terrible Cailleach Bheithir, the ancient Winter Hag of death and darkness. Her icy voice still echoes around the wild snow-bound chasms of the mighty Ben Cruachan. There are those who say that on the night of the winter solstice her piteous and heart rending lamentations can clearly be heard at Ardanaiseig. There are others who say that Ardanaiseig itself stands on the site of the first of many ancient settlements to be drawn to Loch Awe by the story of its Magic Waters. In any event, the very air at Ardanaiseig seems to hang heavy with Celtic myths and memories.

His reputation has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 years as he draws upon diverse culinary traditions and an endless passion for cooking to create unique dining experiences for our guests.

About Gary As a boy Gary spent summers travelling across France in his father’s HGV. These trips had a huge influence on him, introducing new tastes, textures and culinary experiences. France continued to have a significant influence on Gary, drawing him back time and time again for work and pleasure. Eating in Michelin starred restaurants in Paris, Brittany, Bordeaux and – most especially - Strasbourg, became a favourite pastime. Gary began his career at the Hospitality Inn in his home town of Irvine. He worked in several Scottish kitchens before moving south of the border to work under Pat McDonald at the Michelin starred Epicurean in Cheltenham. After a stint as Head Chef in Tomintoul, Gary finally came to Ardanaiseig in 1997. Within a year Gary was promoted from Sous-Chef to Head Chef and has never looked back. In addition to regular visits to London’s finest restaurants, Gary has accepted ‘Stages’ in a number of prominent London kitchens, including The Square with Phil Howard and The Restaurant with Marco Pierre White, whom he cites as one of his biggest inspirations: “Growing up in the kitchens when I did, he changed everything. Marco was the one who made Michelin stars so important to us all”.

Walking, Cycling & Horse-Riding Explore the 240 acre grounds of Ardanaiseig on foot or venture along the east shore of Loch Awe to Eredine Wood which offers a choice of magical woodland and loch-side trails for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. For the more adventurous there are challenging fell walks and spectacular scenery in the surrounding mountains.

Clay Pigeon Shooting Clay pigeon shooting is available within the grounds, with all the necessary equipment provided. This is a particularly popular way to entertain large wedding parties but can also be arranged for individuals and smaller groups. Fishing Loch Awe has something to offer both game and coarse fishermen, seasoned or novice. The 26 mile long loch is famous for its huge ferox (brown) trout - but rainbow trout, sea trout, salmon, perch, pike, arctic char and eel can also be caught. We can help you obtain a boat and the necessary equipment and permits, and arrange a professional guide or fishing lessons. Deer Stalking The forests and mountains surrounding Ardanaiseig provide ideal terrain for stalking red deer. We can arrange a professional guide and rental of equipment during the stalking season. Transport & Directions Arrive by helicopter, train, seaplane, car, bicycle or on foot...but perhaps the best approach is by steamboat. By road from Edinburgh & Edinburgh airport (115 miles) Follow the M9 past the Stirling bypass. Take the A84 at Junction 10 through Doune and Callander towards Strathyre, Lochearnhead. Keep on the A85 towards Oban, through Crianlarich and Tyndrum to Taynuilt. In Taynuilt turn left onto the B845– a 6 mile single track road leading to the hamlet of Kilchrenan. Turn left at the Kilchrenan Inn onto a single track road. After 3.8 miles you will reach Ardanaiseig. By road from Glasgow & Glasgow airport (90 miles) Take the M8 towards Greenock, exiting at junction 30 for the Erskine Bridge. Exit the bridge onto the A82 towards Loch Lomond and Tarbet. At Tarbet take the A83 to Inverary then the A819 to Loch Awe. At the T-junction at Loch Awe take a left onto the A85 and continue through the village of Loch Awe and Bridge of Awe until reaching Taynuilt. In Taynuilt turn left onto the B845 – a 6 mile single track road leading to the hamlet of Kilchrenan. Turn left at the Kilchrenan Inn onto a single track road. After 3.8 miles you will reach Ardanaiseig.

By train Train is certainly not the fastest way of reaching us but for the rail enthusiast the nearest station is Taynuilt, 10 miles from the hotel. Taynuit can be reached from Glasgow Queen Street station in 2h 40 mins. The journey from London Euston via Preston and Glasgow takes 8-9 hours. In Glasgow you must transfer from Glasgow Central to Queen Street station. Call us to arrange a taxi from Taynuilt.
