Life skills enable individuals to translate knowledge,

attitudes and values into actual abilities – i.e., "What to do

and how to do it". The promotion of mental well-being

contributes to our motivation to look after ourselves and

others, the prevention of mental disorders, and the

prevention of health and behaviour problems.

Psychosocial competence is a person's ability to deal

effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life.

It is a person's ability to maintain a state of mental well-being

and to demonstrate in adaptive and positive behaviour while

interacting with others. Therefore life skills training enhance

ones psychosocial competencies.

Aim and Objectives

To impart life skills education for the capacity building and

enhancement of personality so as to bring a positive

behaviour change among individuals that result in social

awareness, promotion of peace, civic responsibility,

communal harmony and integrity.

The objectives of this training are further to

l Understand that the training is to widen knowledge,

sharpen skills, develop positive attitude

l Impart knowledge on training methods and

methodologies

l Instill importance of life skills in daily life and t ra in

in ten core life skills

l Applications of Life Skills offered for problem areas

l Understand the need of life skills for healthy and

methods

About RGNIYD

The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth

Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is

an Institute of National Importance by an Act of

Parliament No. 35/2012 under the Ministry of Skill

Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs &

Sports, and Government of India. The RGNIYD was set

up in 1993 under the Societies Registration Act, XXVII

of 1975. The RGNIYD functions as a vital resource

centre with its multi-faceted functions of offering

academic programmes at Post Graduate level

encompassing various dimensions of youth

development, engaging in seminal research in the vital

areas of youth development and coordinating Training

Programmers for state agencies and the officials of

youth organization, besides the Extension and

Outreach initiatives across the country.

LIFE SKILLS TRAINING

The Life Skills training program is designed to facilitate

the practice and reinforcement of psychosocial skills in

a culturally and developmentally appropriate way; it

contributes to the promotion of personal and social

development, the prevention of health and social

problems, and the protection of human rights.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), Life

Skills have been defined as “the abilities for adaptive

and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal

effectively with the demands and challenges of

everyday life”. 'Adaptive' means that a person is flexible

in approach and is able to adjust in different

circumstances. 'Positive behaviour' implies that a

person is forward looking and even in difficult

life skills.

Participants

The participants are 40 NCC Officers from across India

Methodologies: The training will be on participatory method

which is inclusive of

l Brainstorming, Group Discussion, Management

Games, Analysis of Case Studies, Collage Work, Role Play,

Debate, Skit , Buzz group, Chart and PPT Presentation, Video

Analysis, Simulation Technique and VIPP card.

CONTENT OF SESSIONS

Training Methods and Methodologies, Introduction to Life

Skills, Self-awareness, Empathy, Effective Communication,

Interpersonal Relationship, Critical Thinking, Creative

Thinking, Problem solving, Decision making, Coping with

Emotion, Coping with Stress, Internalizing Life Skills and

Practice Sessions.

TECHNIQUES ADOPTED FOR LIFE SKILLS LEARNING

SWOT Analysis, JOHARI Window, SMART Goal setting, 3

C's to keep in mind while taking Decision, POWER model of

Problem solving, DECIDE for Decision making, TACTFUL

communication and Transactional analysis.
