Museo laico nelquale si possono ammirare tavole e tele di storia siciliana, statue lignee, ma soprattutto reperti marmorei, testimonidella ricchezza del monastero. The History of San Domenico is the history of the Dominicans, heroes of the holy words and human silence, who leftthe evidence of incisive and active presence in the architecture of their monastery. They consigned the jewels of artand history now scattered all around the hotel. In this lay museum one can admire panels and canvas of the Sicilianschool spanning four hundred years of history, along with stone works testifying the monastery’s richness. The Hotelhas been visited by the most eclectic, fascinating and disillusioned personages; certainly all of them aiming to finallyrealized a dream enveloped in myth: nights spent at the San Domenico.

Il San Domenico ha esercitato un enorme fascino sui visitatori da quando, nel 1896, venne trasformato in albergo. Inun album di pergamena con fregi dorati, gelosamente conservato nella cassaforte dell’albergo, c’è un po’ la storia delturismo di Taormina. L’album si apre con una foto del Kaiser ed una data, 1905. Non c’è una frase né una sola firma,ma si presume che l’imperatore di Germania sia venuto al San Domenico e abbia donato la sua fotografia. L’annoseguente, il 6 aprile 1906, venne il re di Gran Bretagna Edoardo, nel 1913 fu la volta del granduca Paolo di Russia edella contessa di Hohenfelsen. Vi sono, tra questi illustri nomi, firme di ignoti granduchi, di sconosciuti principi russi,di baroni tedeschi dai nomi chilometrici. Il 10 aprile 1913 firmò il registro Anatole France, nello stesso anno lo firmòUmberto di Savoia, il 28 settembre 1920 Guglielmo Marconi. Lo scienziato italiano scrive sopra la firma “Sperando diritornare”, ed in effetti, cinque anni dopo, il 18 marzo 1925, egli mantenne la promessa e firmò ancora una paginaannotando “Sperando ancora di ritornare”; ma non venne più. Elena di Savoia duchessa di Aosta con Amedeoapposero la firma nel registro nel 1922, Mafalda e Giovanni di Savoia nel 1923, Richard Strauss il 9 maggio 1923,Sergio Voronoff nel 1924, il re di Spagna Alfonso XIII nel 1927, Luigi Pirandello il 16 gennaio 1928. Nei fogli cheseguono vi sono firme di personalità variamente note, da quella di Himmler (che volle precisare i giorni della suasosta, dal 20 novembre al 3 dicembre 1937), a quelle di Dino Grandi, Luigi Federzoni, Farinacei. Rodolfo Grazianiaveva firmato una prima volta il registro il 24 febbraio 1938 aggiungendo al suo nome la qualifica di maresciallod’Italia. Il 5 maggio 1953 (aveva 71 anni; morì due anni dopo) firmò con il solo cognome aggiungendo “semplicesoldato d’Italia” e come spiegazione: “Caduca e vana è la gloria umana, ma santo sempre il sacrificio per l’onore dellapatria”. Si trovano nelle ultime pagine le firme di Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, di re Farouk, dell’arcivescovo americanoFulton Sheen, dello scrittore Thomas Mann, di John Ernst Steinbeck.Questo per quanto riguarda il passato. Oggi che siè perduta quasi del tutto l’abitudine di firmare nei registri, bisogna rifarsi alla cronaca per conoscere le presenze checontano. Ed è la cronaca a farci sapere che oggi il mondo della celluloide preferisce il San Domenico. Nelle varieedizioni della Rassegna internazionale del cinema, la manifestazione siciliana d’estate che si concludeva con laconsegna dei David di Donatello, il San Domenico ha ospitato i più validi rappresentanti della cinematografiamondiale, da Marlene Dietrich a Susan Hayward, da Ingrid Bergman a Cary Grant, da Audrey Hepburn a SophiaLoren. Senza contare le apparizioni inattese, un po’ stravaganti. Qualche tempo fa entrò in albergo, riconoscibile confacilità ma incredibilmente vestita con blue-jeans e maglietta, Ava Gardner la quale era in compagnia di AdlaiStevenson e di altri amici. Laggiù, nel mare di Giardini, era all’ancora la “barca” della diva. Un’apparizione ugualmenterapida nello stesso albergo ha fatto Sam Spiegel, il favoloso magnate di Hollywood produttore di “Laurence d’Arabia”,in compagnia di un rumoroso gruppo di amici tra cui spiccava la figura sottile dell’attrice Romy Schneider. Unico lorodesiderio, quello di gustare un piatto di spaghetti cucinati dal cuoco del San Domenico. Anche quella di Sam Spiegelcostituiva la breve sortita da un panfilo rimasto ancorato nella sottostante baia. Due episodi, questi, che indicano lalatitudine dell’attrazione esercitata dall’albergo e da Taormina. C’è da aggiungere che il cinema ha reso omaggio alSan Domenico. Una notte di capodanno di alcuni anni fa il regista Michelangelo Antonioni, che si trovava nell’albergogià da alcuni giorni, notò in un grande salone, precedentemente svuotato per una festa, che la disposizione dei mobiliraccolti in un angolo dava al locale un disperato senso di abbandono. Pregò allora di non toccare niente almeno per ungiorno; e proprio in quella sala egli girò frettolosamente le ultime drammatiche sequenza del film L’Avventura. Curiosaè la storia della trasformazione del convento in albergo. Tanto la chiesa, oggi distrutta, quanto l’annesso conventofurono edificati nel XV secolo a spese di un nobile catanese, il frate domenicano Damiano Rosso appartenente allaprincipesca famiglia dei Rosso di Altavilla.Nel 1430 il frate fece definitiva donazione di tutti i suoi beni al convento,ma pose una clausola il cui contenuto si conobbe solo nel 1886. Era l’anno del passaggio allo Stato dei beniecclesiastici e pertanto anche del San Domenico allorquando il funzionario incaricato dallo stato si presentò all’ultimofrate rimasto, tentando di strappargli le chiavi di mano, il domenicano reagì rivelando un antico testamento agli eredidi Damiano Rosso. L’antica pergamena rimasta segreta fino ad allora diceva che il convento stesso sarebbe ritornatoagli eredi qualora i monaci lo avessero abbandonato. Fu così che i Principi di Cerami eredi dei Rosso di Altavilla,poterono prendere possesso dell’edificio che successivamente venne trasformato in albergo.

The San Domenico has exercised an enormous charm over its visitors since when, in 1896, it was transformed into a hotel.The parchment and golden decorated book, jealously kept in the hotel’s safe, is a clear example of Taormina’s history oftourism. The book begins with the Kaiser’s photograph and a date, 1905. There is not a sentence not even a signature, butit is supposed that the German Emperor came to the San Domenico and gave his photograph as a present. Next year, the6th April 1906, King Edward of Britain and in 1913 the Grand Duke Paul of Russia, together with the countess ofHohenfelsen stayed at the hotel. Among these illustrious names you can find signatures of unknown Grand Dukes, RussianPrinces and German Barons with never-ending names. The 10th April 1913 Anatole France signed the book; that same yearit was signed by Umberto of Savoy and the 28th September 1920 by Guglielmo Marconi. Above his signature the Italianscientist wrote: “Hoping to come back”, in fact, five years later, it was the 18th March 1925, he kept his promise and signedthe book once again and wrote: “Hoping to come back again”. But he never did.Elena of Savoy, duchess of Aosta, withAmedeo in 1922, Mafalda and Giovanna of Savoy in 1923, Richard Strauss the 9th May 1923, Sergio Voronoff in 1924,King Alphonse XIII of Spain in 1924, Luigi Pirandello the 16th January 1928, they all affixed their signatures on the book.On the following pages of the book are the signatures of well-known personalities such as Himmler (who wanted to statethe date of his stay, from November 20th to December 3rd 1937), Dino Grandi, Luigi Federzoni, Farinacci. Rodolfo Grazianihad once signed the book the 24th February 1938 adding to his name the title of Marshall of Italy. On May 5th 1953 (hewas 71 and died two years later) Graziani signed the book with only his surname adding “private soldier of Italy” and toexplain his statement he wrote: “Human glory is fleeting and vain but blessed is the sacrifice to honor one’s country”. Onthe last pages of the book are the signatures of Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, King Farouk, the American archbishop FultonSheen, the writer Thomas Mann, and John Ernst Steinbeck. This is all in the past. Nowadays, the habit of signing the bookhas been lost and if we want to study personalities we have to go back to the news. It is actually the news which tells usthat the motion-picture industry prefers the San Domenico. During the various editions of Taormina’s International FilmFestival, the Sicilian Summer exhibition that used to award the David of Donatello, the San Domenico has given hospitalityto cinema personalities of world-wide fame such us Marlene Dietrich, Susan Hayward, Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, LizTaylor, Richard Burton, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren. Not to say that there have been unexpected and extravagantappearances. Some time ago, Ava Gardner came into the hotel together with Alai Stevenson and some other friends. Onecould easily tell it was her, but she was surprisingly wearing a T-shirt and jeans. She only came in to have a quick look atthe hotel since her “boat” was at anchor in the bay below. Last summer Sam Spiegel, the fabulous Hollywood tycoon,producer of “Lawrence of Arabia”, paid a short visit to the hotel. Together with him was a noisy gathering, among whichRomy Schneider’s slender shape stood out. Their only wish was that of tasting a dish of spaghetti cooked by the SanDomenico’s chef. Sam Spiegel’s visit was too a fleeting coming out of a yacht anchored in the bay of Giardini. These twoevents show how great is the attraction exercised by the hotel and by Taormina. Another homage paid to the San Domenicoby the world of cinema is due to the director Michelangelo Antonioni. During his stay at the San Domenico, he noticed thatin one of the big halls, which had previously been cleared out for a party, the disposition of furniture gathered in a corner,gave the room a desperate feeling of desolation. He then asked us not to touch anything for at least one day and exactly inthat room he quickly shot the last dramatic sequences of the film “The Adventure”. The story of the conversion of themonastery into a hotel is strange. Both the church, which has been destroyed, and the annexed monastery were built in theXV century at the expense of a nobleman from Catania, the Dominica friar Damiano Rosso, belonging to the princely familyof the Rosso from Altavilla. In 1430 the friar made deed of gift of all his properties to the monastery, but he set a clausewhose content was known only in 1866.It was the year in which clerical properties were handed down to the State and thusthe officer in charge of taking into possession of the monastery of San Domenico arrived. But the representative of the new-born Italian State tried to snatch the keys of the monastery out of the hands of Vincenzo Bottari Cacciola, the latest friarremained among the ancient walls. It was then that the friar, indignant for such a rude action “took his revenge revealingto Damiano Rosso’s noble heirs a sealed and unknown will”. This secret parchment stated that the monastery would havebeen given back to the heirs if the friars has abandoned it. It was then that the princes of Cerami, the Rosso from Altavilla’sheirs, were able to take possession of the building, which was later transformed into a hotel.

DA CATANIA, AEROPORTO FONTANA ROSSA (CTA)Autostrada A18 direzione Messina. Uscire a Taormina. Continuare per Taormina / Castelmola (Non Taormina Mare). Sulla rotonda(Dopo il parcheggio Lumbi) entrare in galleria e all’uscita continuare a salire verso Porta Catania, Proseguire in via Domenico Di Leo,quindi arrivo a destinazione.

DA MESSINA (A18)Autostrada A18 direzione Catania. Uscire a Taormina. Continuare per Taormina /Castelmola (Non Taormina Mare). Sulla rotonda (Dopo il parcheggio Lumbi) entrarein galleria e all’uscita continuare a salire verso Porta Catania, Proseguire in viaDomenico Di Leo, quindi arrivo a destinazione.

San Domenico dispone di un parcheggio non custodito. Essendo la zona a trafficolimitato, sono possibili controlli / blocchi della polizia o vigili. San Domenico has an unattended car-park. Since this is a limited traffic zone, it is possible that there are road checks/blocks by thepolice or wardens. Advise the warden that you are a guest at the San Domenico. Caution, a non-updated GPS may indicate that the area is not accessible to cars.
