Program Areas:Environment/Agriculture ESOFIA’s objective is to protect farmland, forests and rivers, and food sustainability in all areas where people live. Organic and biodynamic cultivation provide the guidelines necessary for healthy and sustainable agriculture.

Pedagogy PThe aim is to teach pupils to strengthen their initiative, self-confidence, ability to think independently, and to develop their creativity and social skills. Waldorf education provides inspiration and guidance in this area.

Healthcare/Care Giving HThe aim is to give the weakest in society – the physically or mentally disabled, socially marginalized and sick – the possibility of receiving decent and dignified treatment by authorities and the people around them. Healing pedagogy, social therapy, and anthroposophic medicine all build towards bringing them long-term care based on their respective conditions.

South AfricaNovalis/Siyaphambili HSince 2006, the Novalis Ubuntu Institute in Cape Town has run the Or-phan and Vulnerable Children’s Program, which aims to support programs working with the many orphans of the HIV crisis. Siyaphambili is a small organization founded by the people in the township of Langa, where the social chaos created by the HIV crisis characterizes its children’s everyday lives. Siyaphambili offers between 2-300 children support and shelter, while staff and volunteers, in turn, receive training from Novalis. The activities are financially supported by Sida and supported by professionals through SO-FIA’s South Africa Group. Trainees from South Africa also come to Sweden.

Hermanus PThe Waldorf School in Hermanus is about 10 miles from Cape Town, and ac-cepts children from the townships in the surrounding area. The Ellen Key school in Stockholm has sponsored classes and teacher exchanges with this school.

AFRICA

TanzaniaYatima heart to heart P HYatima Heart to Heart Association works to help orphans in the Iringa district, which is heavily afflicted by the HIV / AIDS epidemic. Three kindergartens provide supervision and food to 120 children between the ages of 3-12 years. Many live with relatives, but a house has also been built to provide a shelter for the children who are homeless. Thanks to the Swedish voluntary travel agency Volontärressor, many visitors have been to travel here and contribute to different activities, including a Waldorf-inspired preschool and organic crops.

KenyaThe Humane School PIn the village of Sirende in northern Kenya, a Waldorf-inspired preschool/school was established in 2008. A small micro-credit fund for developing the village’s productive activities was also started. This was the result of several years’ worth of contact between the village and Sweden, and 50 families are now involved in the school. The children receive free schooling, thanks to funds collected from Sweden. These funds also pay for the teachers’ salaries and school breakfasts.

IndiaInba Seva Sangam E P H

In the State of Tamil Nadu is Inba Seva Sangam, a Gandhi-inspired organization that accomplishes social and environ-mentally friendly work. They run orphanages, kindergartens and schools, as well giving as help and support to farmer’s and women so that they may organize themselves. They have a botanical garden to preserve the region’s species and biodynamic agriculture.

Deforestation, less rain and declining water levels are a major problem for poor farmers in the area. This reduces the possibility of living solely by farming their own land, and many are forced to move to find work in the urban textile industries.

However, there is a water management project, which aims to “harvest” rainwater from rising groundwater and stop further soil erosion. To achieve this, farmers work together and organize themselves so that they can jointly prevent the desertification that is going on. Inba Seva Sangam not only helps farmers accomplish this work, but also provides HIV information, as AIDS is becoming a growing problem in India.

The work with farm families is supported through Sida grants and SOFIA also sends trainees to work in Inba Seva Sangam’s activities. The picture on the left shows solar stoves, they are heated by the sun and can be used for cooking.

BrazilAramitán H

Located a two-hour journey outside of Sao Paulo, Ara-mitán is a cultural and health center for the local com-munity that also acts as a haven for at risk children and adolescents from Sao Paulo, where they can engage in the arts and crafts and other activities it offers.

Several workshops have been held to build the site, many working closely with the shanty town project Mon-te Azul in Sao Paulo. SOFIA receives Brazilian trainees from these initiatives.

LATIN AMERICA

BoliviaKawsay P

Kawsay, with affiliated organizations in Peru and Ecuador, has, over the course of ten years, designed courses for in-digenous people; courses specifically created to protect the knowledge of their own culture. Kawsay works primarily with education for adults, but also supports the Network of Learning Communities. The network brings together schools, working for an education that meets children and families in their everyday lives and cultural identity. SOFIA sends youth trainees to Bolivia to work as catalysts in the various schools within the network.

ArmeniaAregnazan Waldorfskola P

After many years of preparatory work, the Waldorf School Aregnazan in Yerevan was started in the 1990’s. Despite Armenia’s political difficulties and isolated situation, it has managed over the years to develop Waldorf educational exchanges with other countries. People that were con-nected to the school have as refugees in Sweden trained and educated themselves, which has led to the creation of a well organised Swedish supporting group.

In the autumn of 2009, a trip to Scandinavia was made possible, giving the school’s class 8 the chance to enact stage performances of the Armenian cultural tradi-tion for Swedish audiences. The school looks forward to pursuing its goals of extending cooperation in pedagogy, curative therapy and agriculture as it continues to grow.

RussiaIrkutsk/Jekaterinburg H

The East-West Group in SOFIA has run educational and social curative therapeutic courses in Irkutsk since 1994 and in Yekaterinburg since 2001. The target audience is for both parents and therapists who have already received training. This work has built up a network for the various medical education activities in the Baikal region around Irkutsk, where initiatives for Waldorf schools and biody-namic farming are also underway. From Yekaterinburg education has been extended to the city of Surgut.

Since the workshops started, new activities for disabled children and adults have emerged in the two regions. We are also working to integrate the teaching of medicine and social therapy into the schools and orphanages, and intensive work is being done on a political level to secure the disabled man’s rights in society. Jaroslavl P

Since the early 1990’s, the Örjanschool in Järna has been a “friend” school to the Waldorf school in Yarolslavl. During the construction of the Yaroslav School, the Örjanschool contributed to the school’s premises and materials, school meals and occasionally to other operating costs, as well as to teachers’ training. The Örjanschool bazaars, beneficiary events and sponsor collections have funded the costs. The cooperation includes exchanges of teachers and visits to Sweden for the Russian schoolchildren.

Public Information Activities E P HThe SOFIA Association is constantly engaged in educational activities in Sweden, giving presentations that address the general global issues and present individual projects for Swed-ish school children and adults alike, in order to raise aware-ness.

In order to provide information, we also produce bro-chures, a newsletter for all members of the Association, a website and exhibitions. SOFIA also organizes its parties, information seminars, public lectures, etc. The organization also participates in meetings and conferences within the anthroposophical movement and offers visits to different workplaces.

Contact SOFIA if our participation is desired in any re-spect, or if you would like to receive our newsletter. There are many opportunities to contribute to non-profit and char-ity projects at our events.

School Information & Youth Activities E P HThe SOFIA Association offers information to young people in Sweden, giving educational theme days and themed weeks in schools, and workshops at conferences and seminars. We help schools raise awareness about sustainable development and globalization in education, and by arranging internships and contacts, projects for class trips, etc.

Many young people want to make a difference in the world.Bysimplyaskingthequestion“WhatcanIdo?”We can guide them to and through the diverse number of groundbreaking opportunities all over the world.

Traineeship E P HEach year, SOFIA offers a traineeship program to applicants aging between 18 and 35 years-old. The traineeship allows them to go to and actually participate in some of our projects. Between 2002-2009, the SOFIA Association has sent some 40 trainees to the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Bolivia and India. Since 2009, we have also accepted foreign trainees to come and do their traineeship here in Sweden.

After their stay abroad, trainees participate in follow-up work and educational activities that focus on the work they have done. For example, this might include giving lectures, visiting schools, leading workshops, presenting visual exhibitions, writing articles, etc.

In practice, a month’s worth of preparatory work is done here before departure, with a youth conference, Sida’s preparatory training in Härnösand and 1 – 2 weeks of intensive language courses. SOFIA trainees are traveling 4-8 months starting in the autumn.
