The University of Balamand chose Souk el Gharb for its new branch for several reasons. Most obviously,

the beautiful surroundings offer the perfect atmosphere that is conducive to learning. But the area’s complete accessibility was also an important deciding factor. Just 20 minutes away from Beirut, Souk el Gharb is also easily reached from Zahle, Aley, Bhamdoun and Saida, allowing it to be an educational hub for so many young, fresh minds in the area and beyond.

The Souk el Gharb campus will create a hub of economic activity, providing job opportunities for many local residents and it will nurture a new lively cultural environment, exposing the community to valuable artistic experiences such as exhibitions, theatre, sports facilities and a variety of other cultural programs. The University aims to create a vibrant educational haven that will plant the seeds of knowledge inside the campus walls with the roots spreading far beyond.

“The establishment of branches of the University of Balamand in Souk el Gharb, in Beirut, and in Akkar, is nothing but a confirmation of the University’s philosophy of openness to others, of living with the other in true citizenship that ensures unity within diversity.”

President Elie A. Salem

The University of Balamand is not material. It is neither wood nor stone, but the men and women whom God has entrusted us with their education. They truly are our brothers and sisters and we are committed to fully prepare them for life ahead.

“Balamand came to us to build this mountain again with its wisdom, eloquence, Sufism, and knowledge, and to pull this area out of the ugly remnants of civil war.Let the space of this University be a meeting space for ideas instead of a meeting space for conflicts.”

To accompany the design of the academic programs, the University of Balamand has paid close attention to the design of the campus, to allow for a more efficient and nurturing educational atmosphere. For this purpose, it commissioned one of the world-renowned master planning firms to create a modern master plan for the campus. The master plan will provide many of the educational facilities found in any modern campus around the world.

Built in three phases, the campus is architecturally structured to cater to the growing needs of the region and is designed in a way to allow for facilitated expansion and development as it grows and becomes a hub for a variety of social and culturally diverse communities.
