The purpose of this baccalaureate program is to prepare a generalist who possesses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes with which to practice family- centered professional nursing in a variety of current and emerging health care delivery systems. In addition, the program i s designed to provide a foundation for graduate nursing education. Through interactions with clients--individual persons, families and communities-- and other health care professionals, nursing graduates will contribute toward meeting the wide-ranging needs of the region, state, and the larger community. Process for Admission to the School of Nursing Bachelor of Science Degree:  1. Admission to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. 2. Completion of admission criteria/ requirements. 3. Recommendation of the Student Affairs Committee of the School of Nursing. Time Limits: Nursing courses must be completed within a consecutive six-calendar-year period of time.  ADMISSION CRITERIA:

1.  Effective Spring 2011, a minimum total GPA of 2.70 and a cumulative science GPA of 

2.70. Each student’s total GPA is calculated using all transferable college courses

attempted at all accredited institutions of higher education according to the guidelines in

use by the UNCW Admissions Office.

2.  Successful completion of all UNCW Basic Studies (University Studies) and nursingprerequisite courses prior to School of Nursing admission (can be in progress, but

must complete in the semester you are applying in):

a)  All UNCW Basic Studies (University Studies) including the following courses or

their equivalent: ENG 101and ENG 201 – College Writing and Reading I & II or

ENG 103 – College Writing and Reading (Advanced); PED 101 – Foundations of 

Physical Activity, literature, foreign language, history, and fine arts. Please click the

b)  Nursing Pre-requisite courses  –  a minimum grade of "C" in the following

courses and their accompanying labs, as applicable:

CHM 101 – General Chemistry w/Lab;BIO 201 – Principles of Biology – Cells w/Lab;

BIO 240 – Human Anatomy and Physiology I w/Lab;

BIO 241 – Human Anatomy and Physiology II w/Lab;BIO 246 – Microbiology of Human Disease;

MAT 111 – College Algebra or MAT 151 – Basic Calculus with Application;

PSY 105 – General Psychology;

PSY 223 – Lifespan Human Development;

SOC 105 – Introduction to Sociology, or ECN 125 – Survey of Economics

or ECN 221 – Principles of Economics;

PAR 101 – Philosophical Thinking, or PAR 110 – Introduction to Logic, or

PAR 115 – Introduction to Ethics, or PAR 205 – American Philosophy,

or, PAR 211 – Philosophy of Human Nature, or PAR 215 - Bioethics;

STT 210 – Introduction to Statistics with Applications in the Health Sciences

or STT 215 – Introduction to Statistics, or other related statistics;

Because many of the required courses are sequential, have prerequisites, and may be offeredonly once a year, it is vital for students to complete them successfully in the proper sequence.

In addition to university basic studies requirements and nursing requirements, students must

take elective courses to satisfy the university requirement of a minimum of 124 hours.

All School of Nursing pre-requisites are to be successfully completed in the major

semester prior to admission to the SON: by May for admission to the Fall cohort, and by

December for the Spring cohort.

3.  Completion of HESI Assessment  ™ Examination (pre-admission test subject tochange): students must score a minimum of 75% on each section of the exam toachieve points in the ranking for admission. The HESI Assessment ™ can be taken

only one time in during the testing administration period. Contact the UNCW NationalTesting Office at 910- 962-7444. Details regarding the scheduling of the HESI

4.  In addition to the minimum criteria, the following will also be considered:

An earned baccalaureate degree or high degree (in another discipline) from an

accredited institution.

GPA in science and other pre-requisite courses. (See Admission Criteria #2, a, b)
