Spring/Summer Membership Options for Brock Students

Brock students registered during the 2012/2013 academic year can continue to use the Walker Complex activity areas, including the 200 m track, squash courts, tennis courts, shower room and sauna by simply handing in your student identification card at the Central Equipment Room.

Upgrade your level of access to include use of The Zone fitness centre, spin and fitness classes by registering at the Welcome Desk for one of the following options:

Refund policyUnless otherwise specified, refunds for memberships or programs already in progress will be issued within the first two weeks of the start date. A $15 administrative fee will be deducted. After two weeks or two classes, refunds may be issued due to extreme circumstances (injury, accident, relocation outside the Niagara Region). Written documentation may be required.

Refunds for certification programs will only be issued when the Welcome Desk receives notice of cancellation at least five business days prior to the course start date. This is due to financial commitments to the instructor, the certification governing body, and 100% attendance requirement.

We reserve the right to cancel any program that does not have sufficient registration. Participants will receive a full refund and notification prior to the beginning of the course. It is your responsibility when registering to ensure that the phone number, email address, and mailing address we have in our system is current.

Register earlyClasses can fill quickly and often require a minimum number of participants to run, so please register early. Classes with low enrolment may be cancelled.

Confirmation of registrationIn most cases, an official receipt will be emailed to you for confirmation and for tax purposes. Please ensure that we have your most up-to-date contact information in our system. If you do not have access to email, please request a printed copy of your receipt.

Intramurals/Outdoor fitnessWho can participate?Full-time and part-time students with a valid Brock I.D. card and members of the Walker Complex (faculty, staff, alumni and community) can participate.

How to enter (two ways)As a team1. Pick up a team entry form at the

Welcome Desk.2. Fill out the team entry form

completely. Players can be added at a later date.

3. Registration of a team will only take place on the dates indicated for that sport.

4. If a league fills, your team entry form will be held, you will be placed on a waiting list and no fee is required at that time. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified and given 24 hours to pay the fee at the Welcome Desk.

5. All teams (even waitlisted teams) are required to have a representative attend the captain’s meeting. Failure to attend the captain’s meeting will result in the loss of 1/2 of your performance bond.

6. Following the captain’s meeting, check the web page at brocku.ca/recreation-services/intramurals or the bulletin board located outside the Intramural office (WC215) for your scheduled games.

As a free agent (individual)Sign up at the Welcome Desk and pay the individual registration fee of $10. We will do our best to place you on a team or form a new team. You must sign up before the registration deadline for your league. You must attend the captains’ meeting that will take place 15 minutes before the first game (May 7, 8 or 9).

Note: • Leagues must have a minimum of

four teams to run.• League format will be determined

based on the number of teams. • No officials will be provided. You

will call your own game. • A time keeper/score keeper will be

provided. • Attendance at the Captain’s

meeting is mandatory.

Intramural LeaguesRegistration opens Tuesday, April 30 and ends Monday, May 6. Leagues run May 7 to June 27.

First AidLSS Standard First Aid/CPR C and Anaphylaxis RescuerReceive comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR while incorporating all of Emergency First Aid. Gain an in-depth understanding, including legal implications, of treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies.

LSS First Aid Recertification ProcedureCurrent Standard First Aid (SFA) award holders may recertify their Lifesaving Society SFA certification just once on a Lifesaving Society SFA Recertification Course not more than three years from the Standard First Aid date of issue. To renew SFA certifications subsequently, award holders must repeat the full SFA Course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertifications and original courses. Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate on a Lifesaving Society recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency.

LSS Aquatic Supervisor TrainingFor deck-level supervisory staff, this 10-hour course provides the knowledge and skills (beyond National Lifeguard certification) to manage a safe aquatic environment.

Youth/Children’s programsGrowing Strong Youth Fitness CampOur Growing Strong camp has been developed to give girls and boys aged 12-14 the opportunity to experience a variety of physical fitness activities and training styles. Camp participants will be led by experienced Certified Personal Trainers who will lead them through challenges throughout our facilities (fitness centre, 200m track, fitness and spin studios, gyms, and outdoor fields), but also educate and inspire them so that fitness can become a part of their lives. Drop-off and pick-up:Parents can park briefly in parking Lot “P” adjacent to the Campus Security building. An instructor will meet your child at the main entrance to the Walker Complex. What to bring:Appropriate workout clothing for both indoor and outdoor activity (include shoes for both), sunscreen and a hat, a peanut free snack, plenty of fluids to drink, an energized mind and body! All youth members must attend a mandatory orientation session for instruction on the proper use of facilities and equipment.

*Youth 12-14 who have participated in Growing Strong (formerly Fitness Camp for Young Athletes or Youth Strength Training program) may purchase a membership.

The fee is pro-rated on the 1st of each month. High school identification is required when purchasing a membership.

Fit Kids (6 weeks)Every girl and boy deserves not only the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of physical fitness activities, but the opportunity to learn from and enjoy them as well! Let a Certified Personal Trainer introduce your child to that opportunity with fun, safe, and empowering exercise sessions once a week in our Fitness Centre.

Helpful information for membersProtecting your informationPersonal information is collected under the authority of The Brock University Act, 1964, and in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) for the administration of the University and its programs and services. For details on the use and disclosure of this information, call Brock University’s Department of Recreation Services at 905-688-5550 x3574.

Email addresses are collected and used to email tax receipts, program information and programming notifications.

Check-in or replacement sticker/cardCheck in at the Central Equipment Room each time you visit with your Brock student I.D. and/or membership card with photo I.D. and obtain a wristband. Should you forget your membership card, you will be granted 2 free look-up entries to confirm your status. Following this, if you cannot produce your card, a look-up fee of $2 will be charged. Should you require a new membership card or Zone sticker for your student card, the replacement cost is $15.

Nightly closingPlease note that the use of activity areas is expected to cease 10 minutes prior to closing to allow you time to shower and retrieve your belongings.

Pool closureThe Eleanor Misener aquatic centre opened in 1981. After 31 years, maintenance is required to ensure that your aquatic experience continues to be safe and enjoyable.

The pool will be closed until September 2013.

Apparel• Clean, non-marking indoor athletic

shoes must be worn in the gyms, courts, Zone and track.

• Baggy tank tops, bare torsos and street clothing/footwear are not permitted in the Walker Complex.

• Pants and shorts should not have protruding metal which can cut the equipment (i.e., belts, zippers).

• Shorts must have a minimum inseam of two inches.

• Gym bags, knapsacks, jackets, keys and other personal items are not allowed in activity areas (gymnasia, The Zone, pool).

• Lockers are available in the change rooms for day use. Please bring your own lock or rent/buy one from the equipment room.

• Proper attire must be worn while using the squash and outdoor tennis courts (includes shirts).

• It is strongly recommended that goggles be worn while playing squash.

Brock Student lockersLockers can be purchased for the duration of your membership while quantities last. See Member Lockers for more information.

Member lockersMembers are required to empty the contents of their locker or renew by the expiry date. Recreation Services is not responsible for items left in your locker. If contents are removed by our staff, they will be stored in the Central Equipment Room for 2 weeks and then disposed of. If you have rented a locker, you must use the lock that is provided by the department. Locks are to be left on the locker at the end of your rental term.

If your locker expires and you have not retrieved your belongings, staff will attempt to contact you by phone and/or email to request that you pick them up.

Locker roomsAll gym bags/knapsacks must be stored in lockers prior to entering any of the activity areas. Day lockers and coin lockers are for one day use only. Locks and contents will be removed at closing and a $5 administrative fee will be charged to retrieve your belongings. Locks are not supplied for day use lockers.

NOTE: Parents with children of the opposite sex must use the family change room. Personal items should not be left in the changeroom cubicles.

Make sure you secure your

belongings. Use a lock.

The Department of Recreation Services is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. If you do not own a lock, coin lockers are available or you can purchase a lock at the Central Equipment Room.

Conducting personal businessConducting or soliciting for any form of business within the facility (e.g., private lessons, personal training, sales) is strictly prohibited.

Risks involved in activityParticipating in physical activity has many inherent risks including, but not limited to, personal injury. Prior to registering for a membership or program, it is recommended that you consult your physician if you have any medical concerns. The Department of Recreation Services requires all members and program participants to read and sign a release of liability, waiver of claims and indemnity agreement at the time of registration.

Injuries, incidents or safety concernsPlease report any injuries, incidents or safety concerns that occur while using our facilities to the Central Equipment Room staff or ask for assistance.

Behaviour/ConductAll patrons are required to treat each other and the staff of the Walker Complex with respect in adherence with Brock University’s Respectful Work and Learning Environment Policy. Please ask to speak with a supervisor if necessary.

Please ensure that The Zone and Rowing Centre weights are placed on the floor safely (not dropped). Spitting, foul language, grunting, use of chalk and monopolizing the use of equipment is considered unacceptable conduct and may result in loss of privileges.

Lost and foundItems of value are sent to the Campus Security office (x4300). Student I.D. cards are sent to the Brock Card office (x4770) located in Guernsey Market Place. All other items will be held at the Central Equipment Room for two weeks (x3377).

ParkingCommunity and alumni Walker Complex members may purchase a special parking permit for Lot Bthrough Recreation Services. Community and alumni program registrants (e.g., swimming lessons) may purchase a 10-punch parking pass for Lot D. NOTE: Parking is monitored and tickets are issued for violations. These permits are not available to Brock students, faculty or staff.

Helpful information for members

Please report broken or unsafe equipment to a facility supervisor.

Security camerasThe Walker Complex is monitored by surveillance cameras that record 24 hours per day. Tapes are reviewed when it is deemed necessary.

Photography/VideographyFor the protection of all guests at the Walker Complex, the use of photographic equipment, including cellphones with photographic capabilities, is strictly prohibited in the locker rooms. Use of photographic equipment in other areas of the Walker Complex requires departmental and participant permission.

DefibrillatorA public access automated external defibrillator (AED) is located to the left of the entrance to the locker rooms in the Walker Complex. A second defibrillator is located in the Ian Beddis hallway. All facility supervisors and aquatic supervisors are trained to use the AED.

Staff membersAll staff members who work for the Department of Recreation Services at the Central Equipment Room, Welcome Desk, The Zone and pool, have first aid/CPR certification as well as certification/training required for their job. Supervisors have Automated External Defibrillation certification.

Bottle filling stationThirsty? Feel free to use our water bottle filling station located beside the Central Equipment Room on the lower level.

Facility maintenance and special event bookingsOn occasion, certain facilities may not be available due to maintenance or special events. Recreation Services will provide notice whenever possible, but memberships will not be extended.

Squash and outdoor tennis courtsTake advantage of our year-round squash and seasonal tennis courts. Reservations can be made up to one week in advance at the Central Equipment Room. Phone reservations are accepted before 11am daily at x3377. Squash and tennis have priority over other activities on the respective courts.

Note: These courts are in use by Brock sports camps during spring/summer.

StudiosThe fitness and dance studios are multi-purpose rooms with hardwood floors and full length mirrors. When not in use for academic classes, varsity practices and scheduled programs, the studios are available for appropriate indoor activities.

The Zone (Fitness Centre)The Zone contains state of the art strength training and cardio equipment. It is staffed at all times by Certified Personal Trainers.

TrackThe 200 metre indoor walking/jogging track is located above the Ian Beddis gymnasium with a view to the outdoors.

GymsBrock has three gymnasia located in the Walker Complex that can be used for casual recreation and appropriate indoor activities when available. Schedules are available at brocku.ca/recreation-services

Sauna Relax in one of our dry saunas located in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Memberships/PassesBrock undergraduate student accessAll current Brock University students have FREE ACCESS to the Walker Complex activity areas (excluding The Zone and the Leo Leblanc Rowing Centre). Hand in your student identification card at the Central Equipment Room to receive a wristband each time you use the facility. Bring your own lock and remove it daily following your workout, rent a lock at the equipment room for $2, or rent a locker at the Welcome Desk.

Upgrade your level of access to include use of The Zone fitness centre, spin and fitness classes. Student Zone memberships are prorated on the first of every month.

Brock Graduate StudentsBrock graduate students pay an ancilliary fee for use of The Zone in addition to the facilities listed above under Brock Undergradate Students. Please show your Graduate student card at the Central Equipment Room.

Orientation sessions may be booked in advance at the Zone desk.
