DuplineSafe is based on the Dupline® fieldbus, a system thathas been used in more than 120.000 installations worldwide

in the harshest industrial environments. Dupline® is particu-larly known for its reliability, simplicity and ability to transmitsignals over long distances – all of which are features re-quired in safety related systems.

The trend is clear – big advantages can be achievedusing bus communication in safety related systems. Comparedto the traditional serial wiring of NC safety switches, thediagnostics is vastly improved. The immediate indication ofcauses for production stops makes it possible to reduce down-time significantly, especially on large machines and plants.Furthermore, a bus solution is safer, because the risk ofundetected bridges over NC safety contacts is significantlyreduced..

Immediate and precise diagnosticsThe status of the safety switches can e.g. be monitored froma HMI or LED mimic panel, providing fast and precise diag-nostics. The signals can also be monitored from a PLC or PC,for example by using the DuplineSafe Profibus-DP gateway

or the Modbus interface. Machine stops can be fixed fasterleading to increased production efficiency.

Up to 5 km transmission distance without repeaterNo need for special network modules or special handlingwhen long distances are involved. This is one of the mainreasons for DuplineSafe being the leading Safety Bus systemworldwide for long conveyors in mines, tunnels, cement fac-tories, power plants, harbours, stone mills etc.

Bus-powered input modulesThe DuplineSafe input modules are bus-powered - hence nopower supply is required at the E-stops.

Easy to design, install and expandThe DuplineSafe system is easy to design, install and com-mission. The wiring of the twisted pair cable is uncompli-cated and flexible with the possibility to use existing cables.If a conveyor belt needs to be extended, it is easy to install

additional input modules.

Multiple safety relays can read the same inputsEasy to interlink safety switches from different machines sothat any E-stop will activate multiple safety relays.

Emergency stops on conveyors


Along bulk material conveyors inmines, tunnels, cement factories etc.there are several emergency stopswitches connected to a pull-wire, en-abling the workers to stop the belt atany point in case of an emergency situ-ation or a fault on the belt. In order toreduce costly downtime of the belt, it isimportant that the location and natureof the problem is identified as fast aspossible. The traditional wiring solutionwith serial connection of all the safetyswitches does not provide this diagnos-tics, it merely stops the belt. Parallelwiring can provide the diagnostics, but

it is a difficult and costly solution, since a3-5 km conveyor may have morethan 50 switches installed. With

DuplineSafe, however, a simple, flex-ible and cost-effective solution can beimplemented.

A single two-wire bus cable is pulledalong the conveyor. At each pull-wiresafety switch, a small DuplineSafe inputmodule is connected to the two buswires and to the NC contact set of thesafety switch. The input module contin-uously transmits the status of the safetyswitch in a dynamic way using theDuplineSafe address assigned tothe module. The power supply for

the input module is derived from thetwo-wire bus, hence no local powersupply is required. If the belt needs

to be extended, it is easy to installadditional input modules.In the machine room, a DuplineSaferelay output module is continuouslymonitoring the bus and the status ofall the safety switches. If one of thesafety switches is activated, or if abus fault is detected, the output mod-ule will deactivate its safety relay andthereby stop the belt. The status of thesafety switches can be monitored froman HMI or LED mimic panel, provid-ing fast and precise diagnostics. Thesignals can also be monitored from aPLC or PC, for example by using the

DuplineSafe Profibus-DP Gateway.
