While I welcome the sunshine and the warmth of summer, I cannot stop wondering……where has this year gone? We have been so busy with existing operations as well as working on some exciting new projects.

Firstly, news from the vineyard. We recently changed vineyard management consultants to Vineyard Professional Services, a local company with enormous depth and experience. Two of the top staff were previously involved with Beckstoffer Vineyards in Napa. They bring a very fresh approach to our farming practices. I have never been too shy to experiment or step outside of the ‘norm’ for my own “endless pursuit of excellence” and VPS also embrace the concept of trying new things, looking to push the envelope.

Some of our new plantings already embrace this philosophy. We have small blocks of new varieties like Malbec, Tannat, Black Muscat, Vermentino and one I am very excited about, Verdelho. We have already made some experimental parcels and are confi dent future offerings will be certain to delight.

On another note, we have recently discovered our vineyard, Rancho Tierra Rejada, had several celebrity owners in its history. At one point, the vineyard was jointly owned by Wayne Rodgers (“Trapper” from M.A.S.H), Peter Falk and James Caan. We are currently investigating ways we can acknowledge their involvement. One other interesting fact is that when the vineyard was originally planted in 1973 it was the largest single planting of Merlot in the United States…more fun facts to follow!

I made mention last year of trying to develop a Merlot of ‘Reserve’ quality. Well, we have succeeded! There is a parcel of Merlot from Block 1G that is outstanding. It is currently sitting in new French Oak barrels (l’Ermitage) and is certain to get a lot of attention on its release (maybe late 2015). While we have signifi cant vineyard resources (all Certifi ed Sustainably Farmed) we are currently seeking the real ‘gems’, those unique and exciting lots to isolate and offer to our direct to consumer sales, especially our Wine Club Members.

Harvest will be under way by the time the next newsletter is due and I expect the quality to be outstanding, the vineyard is looking great at present. As always, please let me know if you are visiting and I will come by and say hello.

Cheers

Chris Cameron
