John GremmerHow long have you been a TU member? I became a serious TU member in 2000. The great Jack Wahlers called me on the phone and urged me to join.

Are you a chapter board member and/or officer? I have been a CWTU board member, vice-president, and president. Now I assist where I can.

What drew you to joining TU? I have been a trout fisher all my life. Older guys took me trout fishing when I was in my single digits. TU didn’t exist then. I liked all the guys that were involved with CWTU and it was an opportunity to give back a bit.

First fishing catch and/or memory? My first fish were caught behind the high school in Peshtigo where I grew up. We threw red and white Daredevils to Northern Pike. The stream was called Trout Creek (but there were no trout in it) and it flowed into the Peshtigo River. Trout Creek also served as the town dump at that time. Trash trucks would back up to the river and dump their loads. Times have changed for the better.

Favorite lure or fly? The Angel Fly, Hornberg, Royal Wulff and Whitlock Sheep Minnow are some of my favorites.

Favorite fish species to chase? A week in SW Wisconsin would suit me fine. Brook Trout fishing in Labrador would also fill the bill.

Favorite place to fish? Anywhere in a 150 mile radius of Winneconne!

Dream trip? I have several on my bucket list. I would say number one would be an Atlantic salmon fishing trip to Iceland.

Most enjoyable TU activity to attend or participate in? I love Troutfest!

Where do you call home? I have lived outside of Winneconne for 50 years.

Do you have a pet, if so name and what? All my life I have had dogs. Always pointing bird dogs. I like their dispositions and I love to grouse hunt. Now, I have a 4 year-old English Setter who is a great companion.

Other activities you enjoy? I enjoy camping, kayaking, photography, reading, bird watching, hiking, and exploring the UP of Michigan.

Who are the people close to you, family? I have four siblings that I keep close contact with. My son Sam and I do things together on a weekly basis, and my wife of 53 years is my best friend.

Recent book read or favorite? Every fly tyer should read “The Feather Thief!” The best fishing book I ever read was “The Longest Silence, A Life In Fly Fishing” by Thomas McGuane.

Favorite movie? I love movies, I’ve seen so many, but I can’t say I have a favorite.

Favorite food? Like most of the world - it’s pizza!

A hidden talent you have? I don’t know if it’s a talent or not, but I like to read and write poetry!

Guilty pleasure? Tootsie Rolls!

Get to Know CWTU MembersLinn Beck

How long have you been a TU member? 25 years.

Are you a chapter board member and/or officer? Past president.

What drew you to joining TU? I always have had a passion for trout fishing, so it seemed natural to join TU and get involved to better the fishing and habitat.

First fishing catch and/or memory? I would have to say catching blue gill with my grandmother and step-grandfather up in Crandon.

Favorite lure or fly? Anything that is working at the time. I am one who usually goes through my fly box when trout fishing or the whole tackle box when musky fishing. I get lots of practice at knot tying.

Favorite fish species to chase? Trout, followed very closely by Musky.

Favorite place to fish? Anywhere in the Mecan River watershed.

Dream trip? New Zealand for trout.

Most enjoyable TU activity to attend or participate in? WITU Youth Camp, and really any TU youth event, followed closely by work days.

Where do you call home? Oshkosh.

Other activities you enjoy? Fast pitch softball, fly tying, drawing and hiking.

Who are the people close to you, family? Family first, then there are a lot of people in TU who are as close to me as family without naming names, as I wouldn’t want to leave anyone off the list. Everyone I interact with in TU from the national level down to the chapter level are such a joy and inspiration to be around it is hard to put one above the other.

Recent book read or favorite? “Border Country: The Northwoods Canoe Journals of Howard Greene” is my most recent. My favorite/favor-ites would be anything by John Gierach. I go back and re-read his all the time.

Favorite movie? “Green Berets” with John Wayne.

Favorite food? Anything Mexican.

A hidden talent you have? I would like to think drawing and sketching.

Guilty pleasure? Being diabetic, I think I would have to say Hughes’ chocolate covered cherries.

CWTU Board of Directors Minutes 4-9-2019Meeting Location: Fin ‘N’ Feather, Winneconne, Wis.

President Stan Cichowski called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m.

Dan Harmon III presented the information on the construction of the memorial bench in memory of Jeffrey Jon Wilcox. He will talk with the Wilcox family regarding this. Shawn Sullivan has some location sites for placement of the bench.

Summer Meeting Proposal to be at the Aldo Leopold Center: Tom Meyer proposed a possible meeting to be held at the Aldo Leopold Center in Baraboo. The cost would be $100 for the room and $125 for a guided tour with 25 people which included a tour of the cabin. The center normally closes at 6:00 p.m. so we would have to have an afternoon meeting. If we wanted it past 6:00 p.m. there would be an additional $250 charge for the center to staff people on overtime. The center would also provide a speaker for us free of charge during our lunch if we wanted it. The consensus was that we might not get enough people to attend to make it worthwhile since it is a weekday and it would have to be early afternoon. They asked about looking into possibly having it on a Saturday so the attendance might be greater.

Microbrewery Event: Mike Salas presented his data on coordination of the 22 Lake Brewery fly tying gathering to be held on May 25, 2019 in Waupaca from 12-3 p.m. Pork/Beef sandwiches and chips will be sold.
