Itisanunderstatementtosay thatSanAntonio isacityofmanyandvaried traditions.Fromfreedomtofoodtofamily, there is deep lineage deserv-ing celebration.Another greatSanAntoniotraditionisitscol-orfulmusicalheritage. Ramiro “Ram”Ayalawasasgoodafriend,andasstead-fastasupporterasmusicianscould ever have in this city.Ramownedandoperatedthefabled Taco Land, a wateringhole and live music meccaon the nearnorthern fringe ofdowntown San Antonio, fornearly 40 years. During thatstretch, hundreds (or darewe say thousands) of bandsfromnear&fartooktothetinystage,churningoutrock-n-roll,country,blues,rockabilly,punkrock, noise, and every othersoundimaginable.... The audience at TacoLand was as varied as themusic that bands would playthere. This is what made thebar onWestGrayson such amelting pot, and a welcomegetaway to the cool, the hip-sters, old-timers, dropouts, professionals, and downtrod-den alike. And at the centerofthiscacophonyofhumanitywas themaneveryonecalled“Daddy”,thatwasRam. Longtime veteran of themusicscene,JerryClayworth, sums up Ayala’s flare best:“RamwastheepitomeofSanAntoniocool...Hecameupintheold-school,wherehonesty,
