Selemax consists of selenium-containing inactivated yeasts based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae enriched during the fermentat ion process with se len ium. The addi t ive is intended to be marketed in two forms, Selemax 1000 and Selemax 2000, which differ only i n t h e fi n a l s e l e n i u m concentration.

A tolerance study in chickens for fattening, one of the most sensitive species, at 6-fold the maximum authorised content in complete feed demonstrated that Selemax is safe when s u p p l e m e n t e d u p t o t h e maximum authorised content of selenium in complete feed.

Provided that the maximum authorised selenium content in complete feed is not exceeded, the use of Selemax as selenium source is considered to be safe for all animal species.

To ensure consumer safety from consumption of tissues and products of animals treated with Selemax, the FEEDAP Panel maximises feed inclusion of Selemax, (and other selenised yeas ts ) t o 0 .2 mg Se /kg complete feed.

Based on the response of liver glutathione peroxidase activity and the selenium level in plasma and liver of piglets to dietary supplementation of selenium f rom Se lemax , the Pane l considers this addit ive an effective source of selenium for all species. Selemax does not modify the quality of meat as m e a s u r e d b y p h y s i c a l parameters, and does not pose an add i t iona l r i sk to the environment.

Visit the linkhttp://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/doc/2778.pdf for the complete opinion from EFSA.

Product Update:EFSA: Selemax from Biorigin approved in Europe

To know more about Selemax and other Biorigin products, please email [email protected] .

S a f e t y a n d e f fi c a c y recognised by EFSA

The Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used i n An ima l Feed (FEEDAP) has approved the safety and efficacy of Selemax (Biorigin, Brazil), a source of selenium in the form of organic compounds produced by a selenium-enriched yeast when used a s a n u t r i t i o n a l f e e d additive for al l animal species.

Selemax from Biorigin is a nutritional feed additive for all animal species with no limitation on the age of animals or the administration period (EFSA Journal 2012;10(7):2778).

A specially selected strain of a primary grown Saccharomyces cerevisiae is spray dried to a fine, free flowing powder of light beige colour.

The product is available in 25kg multi walled paper bags.

Not all sources of Selenium yeast are equal. Two key requirements for a source of selenium yeast to be considered acceptable for animal performance is the content of organic Se as well as the percentage of SeMe compared to SeCy. Selemax is produced to have over 70% SeMe and over 98% organic Se.

Event Review:8th Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries (8CTDC), Bangkok Thailand

The 8th Congress of Toxicology i n D e v e l o p i n g C o u n t r i e s (8CTDC) was held in Bangkok (Thailand) under the theme of “ S h a r i n g t o x i c o l o g i c a l knowledge for healthy life and environment”.

In association with Mahidol University (Thailand) and IFIP ( F re n c h I n s t i t u t e f o r P i g Industry), Animine presented analytical findings on the risk of heavy metal contamination in pork offal (liver, kidney).

Heavy metals (mainly cadmium, lead, arsenic) in animal feeds can or ig ina te e i ther f rom contaminated feedstuffs or from s u p p l e m e n t a l s o u rc e s o f additives, especially essential trace minerals like zinc and copper. When contaminated diets are fed to pigs, heavy metals accumulate preferentially in the storage organs.

Recent ana ly t ica l surveys showed that one fourth of pig kidneys in Thailand was above the regulatory limit in cadmium concentration. The percentage of kidneys unsafe for human consumption could not be only explained by potentially Cd polluted areas, but may originate from contaminated sources of trace mineral supplements.

Recent analysis with batches of zinc oxide products utilized in pig diets showed very high l e v e l s o f c o n t a m i n a n t s . Supplementation of piglet feeds w i t h z i n c o x i d e a t

pharmacological levels, about 25 times more than the nutritional requirements, is common to secure growth performance and/or reduce post weaning diarrhea of the piglets. Although the period of supplementation is early in the pig life, the very long biological half-life of heavy metals causes a risk of high Cd levels in the organs at the slaughter.

HiZox®, the potentiated zinc oxide product from Animine, not only is utilized at a low inclusion rate in piglet diets, but is also guaranteed with concentrations in heavy metals at extremely reduced levels, even lower than EU maximal regulatory limits.
