After doing genealogical research for several years, I found that I had amassed data on quite a few different family lines other than my own direct lines. Thinking that perhaps these lines might be of interest to others, I decided to put the accumulated data together in a family book so that the information could be shared with others.

I t has taken extensive research i n both libraries and courthouses and a vast amount of correspondence to bring i t a l l together. Many persons have offered their kindness by helping in a variety of ways Including suggestions as to how to proceed. I wish to thank them a l l collectively and specifically those listed below who have •'gone the second mile."

Chapter I I

The Spencer Family of Georgia and Alabama

The Spencer family of Jefferson Co., Ala., i s descended from Octavius Spencer, b. Oct. 14, I788 i n Richmond Co., Ga. He was the f i f t h child of Octavius/ William Spencer of Augusta, Ga., and Mildred (Hill y ) Scott, b. 1758{ Pr. Edward Co., Va., daughter of Capt. James Scott and Frances Collier. Octavius/ William Spencer i s l i s t e d i n county records of Richmond Co., (Augusta), Ga., from I774. He apparently changed his name from Octavius to William during this time as per deed of Richmond Co. i n 1790 in which he uses both names. He was a musician, a "Teacher of the dance" according to another deed of the same county and i s also described similarly i n James W. Spencer's manuscript. I t i s thought that his father was Thomas Scott Spencer of Charlotte Co., Va. though this has not been proved. Ke m. Mildred (Milly) Scott i n I775 i n Augusta, and was reported deceased on Oct. 22, I8O6 by the "Augusta Chronicle." Mildred Scott was reported deceased on Jan. 25, 1791, by the same paper, aged 30, leaving small children.

The Spencer manuscript states, " I have heard grandfather (Octavius Spencer) t e l l i t that his father was a musician, belonged to a band that played on public occasions at Savannah and other places, especially when his band was in demand for every h a l l for many miles around, he l e f t grandfather Octavius and his brother, William, i n charge of an old black "Mammy." He then bound his two boys, ten and twelve years of age, to his son-in-law and cousin, Abner McGehee. Abner McGehee had married Octavius Spencer's older sister, Charlotte. Apparently they lived with the McGehee*s u n t i l each was twenty-one years of age, when they were set at l i b e r t y , "with a horse, saddle, bridle, and $100 i n monry. My grandfather told that he set out i n search of adventure with no definite purpose i n view, possibly with sort of an idea of vi s i t i n g Virginia. He struck North, i n two or three days getting i n the v i c i n i t y of Hezekiah Gray's home. He met Betsy Gray. The courtship was fast and furious. Neither knew that they were f i r s t cousins u n t i l a few days before the wedding. But learning the facts did not halt matters. He married and settled down to farming, bought four or five negroes before moving to Alabama, which he did about 1820." There i s a map in the Jan. l 6 , I969 issue of "Family Puzzlers" showing the Broad River settlement ca 1800 drawn by a member of the family of Shaler Hillyer. This map shows the plantation of Abner McGee next to Dr. Bradly and John Gilmer, numbered 35 on the map. The location of the property i s on the Broad River just west of Long Creek, which would be i n Oglethorpe Co.

There were at least three Gray brothers who were b. i n Maryland, and later settled i n Georgia. Parents of these brothers may have been Zachariah Gray and Anne Houghston (or Houghton). These brothers werei

A scrap book written by M. J. Kenan, son of Aurelia, contains the following remarks«

"My mother, Aurelia, was a daughter of Mr. Zachariah Gray, of whom I have but a f a i n t remembrance. He d. i n Milledgeville, Ga., when I was quite young. Her mother was a Posey, as well as I recollect - none of our family ever saw her. Indeed, I have no personal knowledge of any of my mother's family, excepting two brothers of my grandfather Gray. One of these, Hezekiah, resided i n Elbert Co., Ga., the other, Richard, i n Franklin Co. of this state. When my mother took me with her on a v i s i t to them i n 1821, they were plain farmers, but men of excellent repute. Kind and honest with their fellow men, and one, i f not both, a professor of religion. They were t r u l y "types of the good citizen" and passed to their tombs, not having riches, but characters unre-proached with crime. My mother died i n May I867 i n the 90th year of her l i f e . Age had dimmed her faculties and bowed her form-but i n her youth and prime, her motherly t r a i t s were a l l that her children could desire. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Her death occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. James V. Home, with whom she lived i n G r i f f i n , Spalding Co., Ga., and was buried i n that c i t y May I867. She had seen many troubles, having passed much of her l i f e upon the fron t i e r of Ga., exposed to alarms from savage I n dians and the many dangers which they menaced from time to time. Her l i f e at this period was not one of luxurious f e s t i v i t y nor social quietness. She accompanied her husband to Montpelier on the eastern bank of the Oconee River, and nearly opposite to Milledgeville, before c i v i l i z a t i o n had marked i t s f i r s t prints upon the s o i l of Ga.'s future capitol."

The (Aston-Astin) Austin Family of Pennsylvania and Virginia

The beginning of the Aston-Astin family in this Country originates in the state of Pennsylvania where George Aston Sr., b. perhaps in Birmingham, England, settled at Downington, Chester Co., Pa., i n 1682, and took up 500 acres of land and 1000 acres of woodland. He Is said to have built the old Hunt Mansion i n 1727-8. He was a Justice of the Peace and a large land owner in Cain Township, Chester Co., Pa., and m. Elizabeth Hunter,2

daughter of Peter Hunter of Middleton and Jane who was a Quaker. George Sr.'s father may have been John Aston, also listed i n the records as bringing suit against James Scott, also of Chester Co., Pa., on Oct. 17, I683P George Sr. d. 1728, Downington, Chester Co., Pa. Childreni

Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He came from England early in the eighteenth century, settling i n Lancaster Co., Pa. He was a surveyor and laid out the city of Lancaster, Pa., also a large landowner, and captain of the 2d Co. Associator's Regiment, Chester Co.

Capt. George Aston, Jr., son of George Sr. and Elizabeth Hunter, was captain i n the Regiment of Col. William More i n 1755. He m.

i Owen Aston lived in Cumberland Co., Pa., m. in Franklin Co., Pa. Rachel Phipps, daughtsr of Joshua Phipps of Chester Co., Pa. Date of marriage must have been before 1772 because of the will of Joseph Phipps who mentions Rachel Aston.7

i i Capt. George Aston I I I b. ca 17^0 Rev. soldier, lived i n Botetourt Co., Va. i n I772. He m. Hannah Phipps Nov. 5, 1763«

There must be some connection between the above three generations and the Aston-Astin family of Chester Co., Pa., which i s listed below, since members of this family also removed from Chester Co. to Botetourt Co.,Va., about the same time and also settled i n Botetourt. However, the connection between the two families i s not presently known. Perhaps a thorough search of Chester Co. and surrounding county records might help establish the relation. There is a paucity of Pa. material i n Florida making i t impossible for the author to do further research on this family at this time. The line from this point is t i l z L j proven and generations given as follows 1

Chapter V I I I

The Richmond Family of West Virginia

The Richmond family has heen the most d i f f i c u l t to trace of any In this hook. The early generations used very few middle names, and named their children after each other repeatedly. Also, the wives of many of the Richmond men had the same given name. To make the task even more d i f f i c u l t the boundaries of the counties were constantly being changed as new counties were formed, and the records are sparse. Add to this the apparent constant relocation of these pioneers for better farming land so that our progenitor, William Richmond, lived in at least seven counties in Virginia and what i s now West Virginia, namelyi Botetourt, Greenbrier, Monroe, Giles, Logan, Fayette, and Raleigh counties. Even the state was changed from Virginia to West Virginia, so that both states had to be searched for records.

The data provided herein have been gathered primarily from public records, the various censuses, b i r t h , marriage, probate and land records of the various counties and comparisons of the above i n specific instances. Question marks have been used and comments made when accuracy i s dubious. The surname Atkins appears also as Adklns. Richmond i s spelled correctly i n early records, then in some of the later records was misspelled Rlchman and Richmon. Many of the county records used the spelling Richmond,

William Richmond was the f i r s t known Richmond to settle i n the Greenbrier area. He was born i n Pennsylvania i n 1752, according to the statement made by him i n his Pension Record i n 1832. Although thereware several Richmond families l i v i n g i n Pennsylvania prior to and after his b i r t h , efforts to connect him to any of these families have been unsuccessful. Miller states that he was bornen England and came after the. War of 1812, l i v i n g f or a time i n Norfolk, Virginia, but this i s incorrect according to his own statement, and also the fact that he served in the Revolution. In addition there are no records of him or any Richmond i n the Norfolk area.

Coming to Botetourt County, Va., he enlisted i n Lt. Wood's company i n Oct. I775 , 3rd Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Neville. He marched with the troops from Botetourt to Savannah Fort (now Lewisburg) where the company wintered. Then under Col. Neville he went with Capt. Andrew Hamilton against the Indians and served altogether two years and one month. He received a pension.in Greenbrier Co. i n 1832, this pension being paid u n t i l Oct. 1849, Va. No. 16535. Federal National Archives No. S. 9088. He served from Oct. 1775 to Nov. 1777.

William Richmond i s l i s t e d i n the 1790 Va. Census (taken i n Greenbrier Co. i n 1783-86) and was granted 180 acres of land i n Greenbrier Co. on Sept. 6, I787, the land lying and being on the south side of Swoobe's (Swope's) Knobbs adjoining the land of William Craig and David Dick, etc. This land was later i n Monroe Co, He was granted 180 acres at Swoob's Knob i n 1793» the land was surveyed In 1798, and 100 acres at Swoob's Knob i n 1796 (surveyed i n 179^) and 150 acres at Swoob's Knob i n 1794. On June 27, 1797 William Richmond and Mary , his f i r s t wife, sold 280 acres on the south side of Swopes Knob and joining the 180 acres by patent bearing date of Nov. 18, 1793» joining lands of William Craig and David Dick.

He i s lis t e d In the Giles Co., Va. Census of 1810 and 1820 and i n Logan Co. (W.) Va. In the 1830 Census, was l i v i n g with Shadrick Martin, a grandson, son of Lydia Richmond, Ms daughter, who m. Gideon Martin, i n the Fayette Co. 1840 Census, ana d. near Sandstone, apparently i n January, 1850, age 98. On Feb. 13, 1850, his children sold land to Thomas Bragg i n Fayette Co., and the deed mentions that William Richmond i s deceased. His last pension pay of $40, his semi-annual allowance, was given to him Sept. 20, 184-9, when he went from Fayette Co, to Lewisburg, the county seat of Greenbrier, and appeared before clerk of the court, accompanied by Nancy Bragg and Polly Bragg who witnessed his future request to have an attorney collect his pay. One wonders how he made the t r i p at such an advanced age.

William Richmond was married at least three times, ( l ) Mary (2) Margaret Bragg, m. Feb. 18, 1809, Greenbrier Co., (3) Rebecca to whom he was married i n 1833 when they sold land. She apparently d. before 1840.

Several areas of the Greenbrier, Fayette, Raleigh, Summers part of West Virginia have been named for members of the Richmond family. Richmond Falls, now known as New River Falls, was named for William Richmond: Sandstone, a village was formerly called New Richmond, and there i s a Richmond D i s t r i c t where many Richmond families of the 1880 Census record lived. From this f i r s t William Richmond are descended the numerous Richmonds of the area now known as Greenbrier, Fayette, Raleigh, and Summers Co., W. V. Children:

Chapter IX

The Parrish Family of North Carolina

There were Parrish families l i v i n g i n North Carolina i n the early eighteenth century. Records have heen found i n Bertie Co. of a James Parrish i n 1736 and I740. There i s a division of estate from William Parrish i n I736 to daughter Sarah Parrish i n Edgecombe Co. In 1745 there was a John Parrish l i v i n g i n Edgecombe Co., who bought land from Thomas Drake In 1741 In the Fishing Creek D i s t r i c t , which late r became Granville Co. Listed In Granville Co. m i l i t i a of 1754 are: Thomas Parrish, John Parrish and David Parrish. I n i757 Charles and Brisse Parrish, brothers, went to Granville from Goochland Co., Va., where there are numerous Parishes of that particular branch. The name i s variously spelled: Paris, Parris, Parish, Parrish. There were other Parrishes who went from Goochland Co. and surrounding counties to Granville Co., among them: Sherrod, Claiborne and David. From other records i t i s learned that the Parrishes removed f i r s t from New Kent to Goochland, then to Granville and surrounding counties. There are extensive records of births, marriages, and w i l l s i n the Douglas Register. Also there i s a detailed a r t i c l e "Notes on the Humphrey Parrish Family of Goochland and Louisa Counties, Virginia" by Nancy Elizabeth Parrish Gardner i n the "Virginia Genealogist" v. 8 #3ff which makes interesting reading f o r anyone tracing the Parrish family from Virginia into North Carolina.
