She had run her own Brownie troop and she had a great sense of what kinds of questions the girls would have. She talked about how homeless people are just like us. Iit is important to smile and make eye contact with a homeless person so that they don’t feel shunned. If they are asking for money, you can say, “Sorry not today”. She told stories about homeless families she had worked with and had pictures of them. The girls loved this and wanted to know everyone’s name. Then she showed a picture and told a story of a boy who helped by getting school supplies of homeless children. http://www.endhomelessness.org/library/entry/hom elessness-fact-sheet-for-kindergarten-through-gra de-2 Kathryn Benjamin Somerville Homeless Coalition 617-623-6 111 www.shci nc.org

Needs and WantsBrownie: Philantrophist Badge Step 1—Learn whatevery person needsDaisy: Making Choices Step 1 - Find out thedifference between needs and wants.1. Have girls sort through the advertisements andcut out pictures of items that a family uses. Havethe girls tape the pictures under: “want”s and“need” on their paper2. When they are done, have each girl stand up andshare with the group why she placed one item inwants and one in needsNotes: The girls had a great time with this one -more fun than I realized. Some of the girls alsoenjoyed working in a team instead of alone. Thisdid require a lot of adult help for discussion of whatwas what and for help finding a picture that was awant. We had a few extra volunteers at thismeeting, so it was very helpful

Each girl will work on one sheet ofpaper and then they will be added to a posterboardNotes: They had a lot of fun this this one. Sincethere is a lot of difference in how long it takes eachgirl to finish her sheet, this worked well as a stationwhere they could go onto the next activity whenthey finished.

4. The cashier’s job is to make sure that thecustomer is paying the right amount5. Then do another round switching rolesNotes: Girls had a great time with this one, but itcan go pretty fast. 10 minutes is plenty. A lot ofthem wanted to take the money and props home,so if I had a smaller troop, I might make a set foreach girl to take home if she wanted.

Email to Parents:

Dear Brownie Parents,

Today I sent home information on a badge that we will work on some at meetings and some

at home. Your daughter will have three things to complete at home. The badge is an

introduction to money and staying within a budget. If you wish to do this badge, please

complete the three steps by our first February meeting as we will do our last step and earn

our badge.

If your daughter didn't make it home with the info it is attached.

Today we worked on our philanthropy badge.

We had a guest speaker who spoke with us about how to treat homeless people, why people

become homeless, and different ways people can help. I am sure your daughter will have some

questions and the speaker suggested this as a useful resource for talking in a age appropriate

way.

We made a poster for the coat drive and we will collect any old coats that you have at the next

meeting.

We worked on a project about what is a need and want. Feel free to quiz your daughter and

see if she knows the difference:)
