BRP Statement on Operation of Outboard Engines in Oil Contaminated Water
Since the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BRP has received numerous phones calls and e-
mails concerning the use of Evinrude and Johnson outboards in crude oil contaminated
waters. While there is little information to draw on for outboard engines being operated in
these conditions, BRP recognizes that many concerned residents and supporters of the Gulf
Coast area desire to contribute to and participate in the cleanup effort. To that end, we offer
the following guidelines and recommendations.
Oil, oil dispersants and water may react differently in saltwater, brackish or freshwater use. It
is recommended that boat owners avoid operation in contaminated water. However, if your
engine is exposed to oil contaminated water or is being used as part of the cleanup effort,
always use caution and exercise good practices to keep your engine clean and free of debris
after each use.
Most notably, cooling systems and rubber components such as cooling passages, thermostats,
hoses, impellers, etc. may require more than typical attention. Examples include:
• Monitor all system's gauges and warning systems carefully during operation. • Pay
particular attention to engine water pressure and temperature, ensuring normal
readings.
• Frequently inspect operation of water pumps, hoses and engine mounts and replace
any components which show signs of swelling, damage or reduced efficiency.
• Always flush the engine immediately after each use with the warmest water available
for 15 minutes. If possible, flushing with water mixed with liquid dish washing
detergent is best.
• Inspect gearcase water inlets and clean frequently and thoroughly, ensuring there is
no blockage or restriction.
• Always wash down exposed exterior components with fresh water and liquid dish
detergent after each use.
