MY observationsduring the short trip to India

(Ram S. Ravindran)

Recently I spent about two and a half weeks in India, mostlyin Tamil Nadu and in Bangalore.. As Indian expatriates wefeel good if India advances in the area of economy and socialdevelopment. Chennai airport, as is the case with the airportsin most of the major cities of India, is now fully air-conditioned. The customs, immigration clearance andbaggage delivery are all processed smoothly. They don’tbother about taxing electronic and computer goods anymore.. All consumer goods are freely available. You can justabout purchase any item in India now. You really don’t haveto take any items as a present. That means you can take moreitems for your own use in India.. The private industry andbusinesses are giving a tough competition to old PSU (PublicSector Units). The 10 million workers working in the ITindustry have created dramatic changes in the society. Of thepeople working in IT industry, 70% of them are women. They work 24 hours a day. This has created a lot of socialchanges. The interest rate is very low. As a result, privatebanks like ICICI, HDFC are all doing a roaring businessfinancing homes and loaning out installment loans on a varietyof big-ticket items.

The most noticeable change is the proliferation of cellphones. People in many walks of life use cell phones. Thisincludes auto-rickshaw drivers and other service people. Ibelieve they are enrolling almost 1.5 million cell phonecustomers every month. Right now India has about 50 millioncell phones and 30 million land lines in use. A few years agopeople had to wait in line to get a land line connection. Nowactually the land line subscribers are surrendering their landlines in favor of cell phones. People carry out a number ofactivities (like checking on the reservation using free SMS)using cell phones.. Cheap broadband internet connection isavailable now. ISDN rates are falling. I believe starting fromJanuary of 2006; you can make an overseas call from Indiapaying only Rs 2/ minute. That is less than US 5 cents. Nowit makes sense for folks in India to initiate the call than folksin the US or elsewhere.

Education has become a big business.. Instead of openingnew schools themselves the state governments are allowingprivate individuals open schools, colleges and professional

colleges by the thousands. Can you imagine that Indiaproduces about 40% of all the engineers in the world! Thevast majority of the engineering schools are operated by theprivate individuals and foundations. In spite of all the clamorthe politicians make about changing names of towns andcities and promoting the use of local languages,, in the Southof India most of the middle class and well-to-do children (Ibelieve it is true in most of the metros in the North as well)attend only English medium matriculation schools. I won’t besurprised if most of the major Indian languages die out incourse of time (because the current generation and the nextgeneration will use them in a primitive manner for everydayconversation only). Mastery of the English language andattainment of new skill set in IT area are what everyone isgoing after now. Unfortunately the BHUMAR states withtheir dislike for English are losing out in the economic field.

Economic liberalization, globalization and privatization havewoken up India and unleashed the entrepreneurial spirit ofIndians as a whole. For the first time the car production inIndia has reached one million per year. The disposableincome of the middle class is increasing. The easy availabilityof loans and credit cards is making in India a consumingcountry. New malls, hotels, restaurants, large modern grocerystores are sprouting up in most of the large towns. Manymiddle class families own private vehicles, microwave ovens, refrigerators, washing machines, and cable and internetconnections. People are having a longer and healthier life. Many people live past 60 years of age. As long as thegovernment stays out of the way of the private enterprise andminds its business of building and maintaining goodinfrastructure, India’s economic and social development willsurely move forward. However, I noticed that thedevelopment is not uniform. The roads can be better takencare of and expanded to accommodate the increasing traffic.Though the medical care is getting better in privately runnursing homes, it is prohibitively expensive. People don’thave a sense of cleanliness and order. They expect thegovernment to keep everything clean for them.

The political parties still engage in Hartal over petty issuesand make city life miserable. Though the size of the middleclass is increasing, the per capita income is still about $600/year. India has still a long way to go but the progress is moreapparent now.

Elohim Day instead of Halloween Day

Halloween is celebrated as the day of evil or day of darknessor to put it other words celebration of lower aspect of self.People put on scary masks, put on customs of vampires, devils, and exhibit skeletons outside their homes, put spiderwebs on their name tabs etc.

By doing this our mass consciousness is increasingly goingtowards negative .They forget that what goes in our mind iswhat comes out. If the input is negative, outcome will benegative. Our mind is very powerful. For example, a computercan use a nuclear energy to create electricity to light the wholenation or create a nuclear war to destroy the whole earth.Similarly, our mind is more powerful than computer. It alldepends how the mind uses the power of thoughts. If we putin negative stuff in our mind, we will create negative thoughtforms and attract negative situations in our life. If we put inpositive stuff in our mind, we will create positive thought formsand attract positive situation in our life. Just imagine people arevoluntarily inviting negative stuff in their life. They are payingmoney to buy these negative stuff and also enjoying it, nowonder there is so much violence, misery, disease, povertyand lack of moral standards in today’s world.

The need of the hour is to stop celebrating such negativefestivals. Instead of Halloween, we should celebrate ELOHIMday. In bible, ELOHIM stands for feelings tones of God.Elohim

also depicts five tattwas ie elements of air , water, fire, earthand akash .Elohims are etheric beings not visible to physicaleye, as they are on different vibration. Earlier humans were inco-creation with Elohims and Angelic kingdom. But humansabused them and slowly we lost contact with them. That’show; all fairy tales are just imaginary now.

We should celebrate Elohim day by acknowledging thepresence of nature spirits, elemental beings of tattwas, andAngels. Instead of wearing vampire dress, we should weardress of Angels, fairies and nature spirits. One good exampleis of findhorm community which is co-creating with nature andElohims .For more details pl go to their website at http://www.findhorn.org/home_new.php

It is of great importance that mass consciousness needs toawaken to embrace positive thought forms and stop encouragingnegative thoughtforms.By demonstrating only LOVE, LIGHTand ONENESS; we can eventually transcend negative egodesire for making Halloween celebration and change the wholeof society. What ever happens in the world is the cumulativeeffect of mass consciousness. We can make great start, bycelebrating Elohim day instead of Halloween day. We cancelebrate by promoting Love and Light, thereby creatingheaven on earth.

New Year WishesMay you get a clean bill of health from your dentist, yourCardiologist, your gastroenterologist, your urologist, proctologist and podiatrist, your plumber and IRS.

May you hair, teeth, face lift, your abs and stocks not fall;and may your blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol, your white blood cells count and mortgage interest not rise.

May New Year’s Eve find you seated around the table, together with your beloved family and friends. May you findthe food better, the environment quieter, and the cost muchcheaper.

May what you see in the mirror delight you and what otherssee in you delight them. May someone love you enough toforgive your faults, be blind to your blemishes and tell theworld about your virtues.

May telemarketers wait to make their sales call until youfinish dinner. May the commercials on TV not be louderthan the programs, and may your check book and budgetbalance.

May you remember to say, “I love you” at least once a dayto your spouse, your child, parent, and siblings.

And May we live in a world at peace and with awareness oflove in every sunset, every flower’s unfolding petals, everybaby’s smile and every wonderful, astonishing miraculousbeat of our hearts!
