Yakima Music en Acción (YAMA) is a program of OIC of Washington, run in partnership with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra and the Yakima School District.

Yakima Music en Acción (YAMA) is a high-quality, intensive, orchestral music program that is accessible to all children, regardless of financial barriers. Its goal is to use music education to disrupt cycles of poverty for children and families in need.

YAMA is modeled after El Sistema, the internationally-acclaimed youth orchestra system from Venezuela that has produced exceptional musical and social outcomes, even in Venezuela’s highest-risk neighborhoods. YAMA is committed to bringing high-quality orchestral learning opportunities to children with greatest financial need and promoting their positive and healthy social development.

n Haley Rockholt, Cello Ms. Rockholt has participated in the A.C. Davis High School Orchestra, regional Solo &

Ensemble and the 2012 WMEA All-State Music Demonstration Orchestra. She has received the Pearson Memorial Scholarship at Whitman College. Ms. Rockholt will attend Whitman College in Walla Walla in the fall of 2013 and, although she is not sure what she will be studying, will keep playing music for fun and most likely major in English Literature.

Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “In the five years that I have been a part of YYSO, I have grown tremendously both as a musician and in my self-confidence. Sixteenth notes used to scare me into fits of hysteria, dynamics were merely far-flung dreams and the music of great composers haunted my every thought. But now, I have come to realize that, although, yes, sixteenth notes are mildly terrifying, thirty-second notes are far worse and music will always be floating about – because that is what it is for. Once I accepted that and learned to love more and more intricate and challenging music, I knew that the orchestra is a wonderful thing and I want to keep playing forever.”

n René Santana, Bass Mr. Santana has participated in the Zillah High School Pep Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band

and Choir. He has been an Honor Roll student for multiple years. He plans on attending Central Washington University for a few more years majoring in music performance and, hopefully, music composition as well.

Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “It has meant a great deal to my knowledge and understanding of the upright bass. I came into the program knowing little to nothing on the upright bass. I knew more on the electric bass but not as much on the upright. However, after these few months of playing bass, I have learned so much. That is awesome because I’m planning on attending Central Washington University for music and I’m going in as a bass major.”

Al Maletta Scholarship The Al Maletta Scholarship was established in honor of Al Maletta, a very special musician and advocate of youth in our community. Mr. Maletta was born in 1914 in Taylor, Washington, and became a fan of vaudeville as a young child in Seattle. When he was 11 years old, he received an accordion as a gift, beginning a relationship that would span his lifetime. In the early 1930’s, Mr. Maletta traveled throughout the country playing vaudeville and on the radio. In 1936, he married Yolanda Ferri and moved to Yakima where he opened the successful Maletta School of Accordion. In 1956, he formed Maletta-Decio Accordion Studios, in partnership with Bob Decio, expanding to a full line music store. Mr. Maletta taught music for 69 years to hundreds of students. He died on November 9, 2009 in Yakima. At the family’s request, donations were made to the YYSO in his name. The YYSO is grateful to be a part of Mr. Maletta’s legacy of music and youth advocacy. Mr. Maletta’s grandson, Albert Anabtawi, played the string bass in the YYSO and Mr. Maletta’s daughter, Mary Kay Anabtawi, served on the YYSO Governing Committee. We have known, intimately, of the dedication and passion the family has to music in our community. Through the Al Maletta Scholarship, more musicians will feel his touch and his inspiration. We are thankful to Al Maletta’s family for making this gift to our student musicians.

n Martha Coronel, Violin Ms. Coronel has participated in Mariachi Arcoiris. She is still determining her post-high

school plans. Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “YYSO has

been an opportunity to be more involved with music as well as being part of a team and meeting people who share my interest.”

n Andrea McEntire, Violin Ms. McEntire’s immediate plans are to continue working as a nursing assistant in a nursing home, while going to college to eventually become a mental health counselor for at-risk youth. Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “My involvement in YYSO has taught me how fun it can be to play an instrument.”

n Kathryn Moore, Violin Ms. Moore has participated in YYSO since the age of nine. She also has participated in

French American Chamber Orchestra, Holy Names Chamber Orchestra, Laughing Horse Symphony Orchestra, All-State Symphony Orchestra (2010 and 2011) and the Icicle Creek Symphony. She was a Carnegie Hall Soloist, with orchestra, at age six. Ms. Moore has earned first place in Regional Solo & Ensemble, as a soloist, in 2009 and 2010; first place in Regional Solo & Ensemble, as an ensemble member, from 2009-2012; and third place in State Solo & Ensemble, as an ensemble member. She has been awarded the Whitman College Campbell Scholarships – Music Division Scholarship, a Multicultural Diversity Scholarship, a Multicultural Achievement Program Academic Leadership award and a Jason Lee award. Ms Moore has received numerous music scholarships from colleges. This fall, after a full honors and IB high school career, her plans are to attend college and double major in music and either psychology, sociology or language. She also plans to travel either during or after college with, possibly, the international program El Sistema.

Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “Music has always been a part of my life, having played violin from age three. It’s an outlet of expression and connects me to a world of people around the world through an international language (music). YYSO has allowed me to grow as a musician and student. I’ve been able to study with some of the world’s kindest and talented people such as Bruce Walker and am truly grateful for their support in my education and future.”

n Marissabel Rivero, Tuba Ms. Rivero has participated in the Z Center Stage Theatre Company; Zillah High School

Concert, Pep and Jazz Bands; Zillah Community Choir; Western International Band Clinic; and All-State. She received a YYSO Al Maletta Scholarship and a combined merit / work-study scholarship for the Lamont School of Music Pre-College Summer Academy. She also has lettered in Drama and Band in school. She will attend Central Washington University to study music education and tuba performance. Her dream is to become a music teacher, to become the best musician she can and perform as much as she can.

Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “YYSO has meant everything to me! It’s made me learn that I absolutely love playing in an orchestra. It’s my favorite because orchestral music challenges me the most out of other musical ensembles and I absolutely love listening to strings as well. I hope that one day I will get to play with some of the really well-known orchestras out there.”

n Mason Clark, Trumpet Mr. Clark has participated, with trumpet, in the A.C. Davis High School: Jazz Band, Wind

Symphony and Buccaneer Marching Band; and as a vocalist in the A.C. Davis High School Jazz Choir and the Yakima Valley Community College Concert Choir. He received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, Woody Herman Jazz Award, Golden Whistle Award, a YYSO Al Maletta Scholarship and a Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Meritorious Achievement Award. Next year he plans to get a Bachelors degree in Theater focusing on acting. Afterwards, he plans to seek employment as a stage actor. It is his personal hope to be able to work as a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Company at some point.

Personal statement about the study of and involvement in music and the YYSO: “It has been a pleasure to spend time playing with a group of dedicated and talented musicians. Many young musicians simply go through the motions, but everyone at YYSO has the same drive to succeed and excel as individuals and as a group.”
