Nine Frame Analysis of Grenade by Bruno Mars

In Depth Analysis of Grenade by Bruno Mars

By Kelechi Okorie

In the first picture, there is a mid shot used on the artist Bruno Mars. The lighting is very low key. The colour of the lighting is dark blue. The colour blue has a negative connotation of sadness. This shows the audience that it is a sad and slow love song. The dark lighting covers some of his face which connotes that he is losing his identity and that he doesnt know who he is anymore because of his girlfriend has left him. He is sitting all alone in his bedroom and the camera has captured the rain in the background in the shot. Rain also portrays sadness so it really adds to the setting and the scene.

A close up on the picture frame has been used to add to the emotion he is feeling. The picture features Bruno and his ex girlfriend but as you can see, there is a crack in the picture frame which symbolises that there is something wrong in the relationship. The lighting is still very dark and you cant see the face of Bruno mars. The broken picture portrays the broken relationship and that they have split up. This gives the audience an idea of what the song is about. He is sitting on his bed by himself looking down at a broken picture. This shows that he cant get the girl off his mind.

In this picture a mid shot has been used again to show the determination and intent in his face and body. The lighting is still very low key which shows that his problem has not yet been resolved but he is doing something about. He is now wearing a suit and tie which presents to the audience that he is prepared to try and get his woman back. A suit and tie has positive connotations of Power and confidence. This is a big contrast to the last shot as he was just wearing a t shirt an jeans. The suit shows that he has regained his confidence back.He has a rope in his hand and is using it to pull a piano. The audience know he is a very talented singer therefore they can work out that he is dragging the piano to his ex girlfriends house to sing to her as an attempt to win her back.

A point of view shot has been used in this picture. The audience is now in the perspective of a driver in a car going past looking at Bruno Mars. This shot has been used to show that what he is doing isnt normal and that it is extremely crazy. It shows that he has everyone in their cars turning their head in shock because he is in the middle of a busy road dragging a piano around. This is because it is not something you see everyday therefore this shot is very clever.

This is a long shot of the busy road Bruno Mars is on. The lighting is much brighter because of the car lights behind him. This shot represents him as powerful because it shows the cars driving past him and the cars that are currently behind him. The cinematography and mise en scene show that he is not scared and that he is determined and powerful to finish his mission. It also shows the danger that he is putting himself through. He is clearly showing that he isnt going to let anything get in his way.

An over the shoulder and two shot has been used in these pictures. Natural lighting is used now which shows he is getting closer to his destination but he has an obstacle infront of him that he must overcome if he wants to get to his woman. The location looks rough and dangerous and so does the man infront of him. This is because of his excessive tattoos and gold chain. Tattoos and gold chains have negative connotations especially if you are not wearing a shirt because it looks like you are in a gang. Tattoos and gold chains are conventions of gangs. The audience notices the danger because of what the guy looks like and if he gets through the guy, it shows how much he cares for the woman he is trying to get back. This adds to the emotion of the song.

In the first picture another long shot of Bruno Mars on the highway has been used to show his long journey. In the second picture, a low angle shot has been used. It is in the perspective of Bruno Mars. He is currently commanding the edit. Bruno Mars has arrived at his ex girlfriends house but has seen that she has already moved on as another guy is also in the shot standing very close to her. The low angle shot shows that she has power over Bruno because she has made him travel all the way to her house. It also shows that she has moved on and that isnt thinking about getting back together with him.

Shallow focus has been used in this shot. The girl is realising that Bruno is leaving in the distance because he has seen her with another man.

The lighting has gone back to the way it was. It is very low key and dark. This shows that his love life is like a rollercoaster. He is back to square one and is at the beginning of his journey. This is because he didnt achieve his goal of winning his girl back. This is all portrayed through the lighting and the close up of his heart broken facial expression. He is looking up to the sky maybe asking for Gods help and guidance.

A long shot of Bruno standing infront of the large vehicle has been used in this picture. It connotes that he has lost hope and that he has finally given up on his mission. This is evident as the vehicle is about to crush him and the lighting is very dark. This is symbolising that his heart has been crushed by the girl and that he is looking for a way out of his life because she was his everything.
