Porosity in architecture explores the multiple experiences, identities, and forms that can be achieved with porous matter. This is reinforced by lights effect through form, shade and shadow. It is the experiential perception of spatial sequences within, around, and between, which triggers emotions and joy in the experience of architecture.

The phenomenal properties of light reflected or refracted through the library's perforated skin and over it's delicately faceted form transcend the formal aspects of its surface. The forms pick up the glowing yellow-orange light of the setting sun which changes every day in the library's faceted surfaces. Likewise, it's white perforated porous skin penetrated by low horizontal sun multiplies its presence in pins of light with a corresponding web of shadows. Like a rare book; natural light and shadow have the p s y c h o l o g i c a l power to inspire and encourage. The idea of porosity is accentuated at night when the library is illuminated from within, heightening the experiential phenomena of its architecture. Just as instruments in a musical composition, the materials of brick, glass, white painted steel, and colored panels communicate thought and s e n s e - p r o v o k i n g qualities in the experience of the rare book library.
