1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose of the ManualThis document is intended to give information necessary to the installation of the BaseTransceiver Stations for the SBS Base Station System (BSS).

It contains the description of all steps to install the BTS on site and integrate it into therequired infrastructure:– Power supply– PCM - Network– Grounding– Receive / transmit antenna system– Alarm connections– Base constructions

For installation of equipment not supplied by Siemens (battery chargers, antennas, power supplies etc.) refer to site specific documentation or vendor instructionsprovided with other equipment.

1.2 Tasks of the Base Transceiver StationsThe Base Transceiver Station performs the following main tasks in accordance with theGSM-requirement (D900) or DCS-standards (D1800) or PCS standards (D1900):– Provides the RF-link connection to the mobile stations (MS)– Supports various cell types (omni and sector cells)– Provides the PCM link connection to the Base Station Controller (BSC) via

a terrestrial line (in this case symmetric pair or coaxial cable is used)or microwave (additional equipment is therefore required)

– Submultiplexing on the Abis-interface

1.3 Standard Technical Features– Full software download capability– Full rate and half rate Traffic Channels are supported– GSM primary/extended Band ; DCS Band; PCS Band– Hybrid combiners, Duplex combiners and Filter combiners for antenna combining

available– Outstanding Rx sensitivity– 16/64 kBit signalling channels and minimised signalling load on Abis– LMT-operation with full O&M functionality at a transmission rate of 64 kBit– Modular capacity increase of sites

!The CE declaration of conformity for the product will be fulfilled if the setup and cablingis undertaken in accordance with the specification in the manual and the documentationlisted there, such as mounting instructions, cable lists etc.Where necessary, accountshould be taken of project-specific documentation.Deviations from the specifications or independent changes during setup, such as use ofcable types with lower screening values, for example, can lead to the CE requirementsbeing violatad. In such cases the CE declaration of conformity is invalidated and theresponsibility passes to the person who has caused the deviations.

2.7.5 Abis-Interface - PCM Link TerminalThe Abis interface, located on RCAP, is terminated with the OvervoltageProtection (OVPT) which protects the LI inside the BS20 against overvoltage(residual voltage < 1 kV).Two types of OVPT are exist (for 75 Ohm or 120 Ohm cables).

Dependend on the different cable impedances is recommended to:– Use screened cable containing 8/10 shielded twisted pairs 0,25 mm2 for 120 Ohm

PCM lines, e.g. MOD-IY-2DY-FCY.– Use coaxial cables for 75 Ohm wiring, e.g. S-09YS(ST)CY 8x2x0.6/1.2.

The maximum cable length depends on the attenuation of the cable, in order to fulfilthe requirements of minimum voltage levels to be provided at Abis interface accordingto PCM standards. The cable shielding must be connected to the relevant ground pins as close as possible(in order to avoid EMC/RF interfering effects).
