Biologicalsciencecoursesprovideinstructioninthebasicconcepts,theoriesandtermsofthescientificmethodinthecontextofthelifesciences.Coursesfocusonmajorscientificdevelopmentsandtheirimpactsonsociety,scienceandtheenvironment,andtherelevantprocessesthatgovernbiologicalsystems.Studentswillformulateempiricallytestablehypothesesderivedfromthestudyoflivingthings,applylogicalreasoningskillsthroughscientificcriticismandargument,andapplytechniquesofdiscoveryandcriticalthinkingtoevaluateoutcomesofexperiments.

XII. AssessmentsandGrading
A. ExamsTherewillbethree"midterm" exams,butnocumulative "final"exam.Themidtermexamswillbeadministered duringthenormal semester andduringthenormalclassmeeting times.Eachexamwillcovermaterial fromlecture, theonlinediscussions, andtheassigned reading inthetextbook.Theexamswillnotbecumulative. Eachexamwillbeworthapproximately 28%ofthecoursegrade.Allexamswillbemultiple---choiceandmachine graded.Answersheetswillbeprovided andmustbefilledinusinga#2orsofterpencil.Eachstudentmusttaketheexamduringher/his registeredsection time.Eachstudentmustbringher/hisGatorIDtoclassonexamdays.Nostudentwillbeallowed tostartanexamafterthefirststudent tocomplete anexamleavestheclassroom. GradingofOnlineExercises.Thereareseveraldifferenttypesofassignmentsforstudentstocomplete:� Quizzes:studentswillbegradedbasedonthenumberofquestionsansweredcorrectlyoutof
totalnumberofquestionsontheFIRSTquizsubmission.� Allotherassignmenttypes(activities,tutorials,etc.):studentswillreceivefullcreditupon
completion.Yourgradesonassignmentsandtheirstatus(e.g.,complete,ordueinxdays)canbeviewedinCanvas.TheLaunchpadhomepageisNOTareliablewaytodeterminewhichassignmentsremaintobecompleted.TherearemanyotherresourcesavailableonLaunchPadtohelpyoustudymaterialfromyourtextbook,suchasLearningCurve,Diagnosticquizzes,Flashcards,Interactivechaptersummaries,etc.ItemsthatareNOTlistedintheGradebookwillnotbegraded,butwestillstronglyencourageyoutousethemtohelpyoustudy.Importantinformationaboutpace.Someassignmentsmayhaveasettimelimit,somakesureyouhavetimetodevotetothatassignmentbeforeyoubegin.Onceassigned,assignmentsareavailableonlineatalltimes,fromthestartofthegivenunitupuntilthedeadline.ItisespeciallyimportantnottowaituntiljustbeforethedeadlinestocompleteLaunchPadassignments;problemsusuallyhappenatthelastminute.Theassignmentshavebeenlistedinanorderthatcomplementsthelecture,andwerecommendeithergoingoverthematerialforagivenchapter:

Youcanalwaysgobackandre-dotheassignmentsafteryouhavesubmittedthemforagrade,asastudyaid.DueDates.NotethatallduedatesforassignmentsareclearlypostedontheCanvasAssignmentspage,intheLaunchPadGradebookandCalendar,scheduleattheendofthesyllabus,randreflectthemostup-to-dateinformation.Thedeadlineforassignmentsis11:55p.m.onthespecifieddate,(alwaysonFriday).Allassignmentsmustbecompletedbythestatedduedateandtimeforcredit.ThereareNOmake-upsavailableforLaunchPadassignments.ExtensionsforLaunchPadassignmentsetswillonlyoccurinextremecircumstances.ADeanofStudentsnoteverifyingdocumentationofillnessorapersonalmattermustbeprovidedforatleastfiveofthesevendaysoftheweekoftheassignment’sdeadlineforaccommodationstobeconsidered.ExtensionswillNOTbegivenbecauseoftechnicalorpersonalissuesthatoccurwithin24hoursoftheassignmentdeadline.

In-ClassQuiz“Clicker”QuestionsStudentswillreceive5%ofthetotalcoursepointsforparticipation inthein---classquizzes thataretobeanswered usingtheclassroom response system(LearningCatalytics, seeabove).Specifically,18pointstotalwillbeawarded forLearningCatalytics(LC)quizzes;6pointsfromeachlectureunitofthecourse.Thepointsearnedwillreflect theproportion ofLCquestions answered correctly inclass.Eachquestionposedwillbescoredas0.75LCpoints foracorrectanswer withanadditional 0.25LCpoints forparticipation.Foreachcourse lectureunit,fullin---classquizcredit (6coursepoints)willbeawarded toallstudents achieving 75%ofthetotalpossible LCpoints fromthatunit;thoseachievinglessthan75%willreceivecoursepoints inproportion totheirachieved LCpoints (e.g.50%ofLCpointsearned=3coursepoints foronelectureunit).
Studentsmaynotmake up LC questions, regardless of the reason (e.g., absence,malfunctioningcellphone, forgot to register, etc.). It is the student’s responsibility to regularly check (i.e., dailyorweekly)theirgradebook inLC toensure thattheirsubmissions werecorrectly received, andto
