What is BSc Cosmetic Science
about?
• The BSc Cosmetic Science degree is a formulation course
specializing in the design, manufacture, quality control and marketing
of cosmetic, fragrance and personal care products.
• It is a sandwich degree, with an optional but highly recommended
industrial placement year between year 2 and 3.
• The BSc Cosmetic Science at University of Sunderland is recognised
by:
– The Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) which is the professional body for
cosmetic scientists and Cosmetic Science undergraduate students in the UK

Why study Cosmetic Science
• The industry of everyday cosmetic and personal care products is
lucrative, heavily scientific, expanding and highly regulated,
constantly seeking to formulate innovative products
– “Every year a quarter of all cosmetic products on the market are improved or are
developed completely new; with over 25,000 scientists and 520,000 science students
in Europe” (CTPA)
– “Cosmetics accounted for 10% of all patents granted in the EU in 2009” (CTPA)
• Rapidly growing market
– UK’s beauty and personal care market was worth £17 billion in 2014 and is growing
year-on-year

• Students will be paid during their placement year (salary ranges from £9,000 to 12,000 or above, depending on the company)
