facilities and the diversity and reputation of its
academic staff. It also offers the most complete
student experience in terms of sporting and
recreational facilities and an unrivalled diversity of
student clubs and societies. It is the destination of

repeatedly been rated first in Ireland for graduate
employment.
BSc SUSTAINABILITY OVERVIEW
BSc SUSTAINABILITY 2022-23
In each year, you will take a suite of compulsory and option modules. The Year 1 modules
focus on introducing you to concepts and ideas in sustainability as well as major challenges.
In Year 2, modules begin to equip you with skills to understand and interrogate issues related
to sustainability, but also to begin developing ideas around possible career paths and other
opportunities. Modules in Years 3 and 4 provide an opportunity to put your knowledge and
skills into practice through fieldwork, inter-disciplinary project work, and internship
opportunities. As you progress through the programme, you will focus increasingly on your
chosen specialisation, but continue to gain knowledge and skills from the others and develop
your capacity for interdisciplinary team work to address sustainability challenges.
Sustainability is a way of thinking about the future, in which environmental, social and economic dimensions are intertwined in the pursuit of maintaining an ecological balance, enhancing wellbeing and striving for an improved quality of life. It involves the integration of knowledge, insights, skills and practices from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and business for the protection of the Earth, its environment and its inhabitants. The concept of sustainability is enshrined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which have been widely taken up as a road map for future development around the world.
All students complete a common year 1 and then choose between three specialisations, leading to the following degrees:
n BSc Sustainability with Environmental Sciences n BSc Sustainability with Social Sciences, Policy and Law n BSc Sustainability with Business and Economics
A detailed set of programme outcomes and graduate attributes is listed on the UCD website.

anyone that wants to help protect and preserve our
planet and the people on it. The combination of
environmental sciences, social sciences and business
allows you to fully understand the issues that face our Earth from multiple
perspectives. The different pathways and module options create a course
that spans from social issues such as cultural integrity, to modern
technologies used to reduce greenhouse gases and their application in
society and business. The flexibility of the course allows you to pursue a
broad range of interests in human, scientific or economic issues and their
development in our changing environment!
HANNAH KERR Year 2 Student 2021/22 When choosing what to study at university, I didn’t
want to limit myself to a specific field but knew I
wanted sustainability to be my focus.
Something that drew me to this course was the
freedom of choice. In only my first year, I’ve been able to take a range of
interdisciplinary modules and discover interests I never knew I would have.
The sustainability modules encourage us to think critically and apply a
futurefocused lens to the wide range of subjects we study. I can’t wait
to delve deeper into my chosen specialisation of environmental sciences
over the next three years and hopefully start a career that brings about
positive change.
CAREERS AND EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT
The programme includes an emphasis on careers and the development of
relevant skills, with industry and civil society partners contributing in diverse
ways such as guest lectures, providing real world problem-solving opportunities
and seminars. Students also have the opportunity to gain direct career-related
experience by undertaking an internship as part of their degree. This will involve
working outside UCD, typically on a full-time basis for 6-12 weeks at the end of
year 3.
Internship opportunities are based within a variety of organisations covering a
range of sectors which reflect the breadth of subjects studied and skills
developed by Sustainability students and the potential professional destinations
of Sustainability graduates.
FIELD TRIP: COPENHAGEN At the beginning of year 3, students will have the opportunity to undertake an
international field trip to Copenhagen to explore innovative approaches to
Sustainability and gain hands-on experience of sustainability challenges and
solutions.
STUDENT EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES Students can choose to study abroad at a partner university for the Spring of
year 3. This provides a wonderful opportunity to experience life and study in a
different cultural context and to learn more about Sustainability in another part
of the world. We are continuously developing our exchange programme but
opportunities currently are provided at:
n Lund University, Sweden n Leiden University, Netherlands n Utrecht University, Netherlands n Arizona State University, USA n University of Melbourne, Australia
CAREER & GRADUATE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES An interdisciplinary education in sustainability theory, policy and practice will
equip you to work in areas such as renewables, clean technology management
and energy efficiency, or advise industries on social and environmental
strategies. Many new opportunities are emerging in small and large businesses
and consultancies in Ireland and around the world.
Numerous opportunities also exist in international organisations such as the
UN, the European Environment Agency and the European Commission,
government departments and state agencies such as the Environmental
Protection Agency and the National Parks and Wildlife Service and in local
authorities and Non-Governmental Organisations.
